You tell Dimitri you’ve been having trouble with money and health issues. He nods solemnly then rises from his chair and starts searching the book shelf behind him.

              “I get that. Obviously, I have very little. James has been having trouble getting a job too. Kiki is having trouble affording college and seemingly everything is wrong with Moira. Don’t worry you’re not alone in this." Dimitri explains, “obviously being a Hermit means living with little, but it was always like that for me, I used to be a doctor back in Russia, but then the cold war ended and I took a trip to America.”

              Dimitri plus a white book off the shelf, it reads Safe Haven 13 Guide, He starts looking for another book as he continues, “I was just coming to America because I was curious. You can’t grow up and live through the cold war and wonder what the other side is like. I was always intrigued with California it seemed so exotic. LA is totally crap, but San Francisco was amazing.”  He sighs blissfully, “it was only a two-week trip, but I wound up staying because I met the love of my life! Even if I couldn’t continue being a doctor in America and had to get a crappy job in a warehouse, I was so happy with him. And he did have a very good job. The 90’s were a much better time, but AIDS was still a very big problem, at least I could take care of him well. I didn’t get it, we were very careful, but in the end he died. I couldn’t stand California. I wondered for a bit then settled down in my cave in Pennsylvania and I spent the past few decades. I was afraid to go home to Russia. I couldn’t think of what to tell everyone. Especially now since it is so dangerous. The pandemic happened, and I know I must become a doctor again.”

              Dimitri reaches for an old purple with a thick leather cover and pulls it out, “Ack, Not another one.”       

              You stand up and walk over to see what Dimitri is grimacing at. In the spot where the purple books is. There is something that looks like a cross between a tentacle and a tree branch wriggling out from the wall. You jump back and…

Have you ever read an RPG that completely changed the way you think about RPGs or how you play them? If so, which one(s)?

I've talked a little bit about this in the past, but come with me, anon, on a journey through RPGs.

Imagine, if you will, a teenaged LT being invited to play a "game like dungeons and dragons" only to find out it was some dude's really sexist attempt at 3.5.

And then it's 5 years later and some friends in college finally manage to convince you that the game they're starting (Pathfinder) will be fun, you should play. And that's your first real ttrpg experience, and it's a campaign that lasts years, longer than your relationship at that time, and it becomes the most important part of your life for a while, and then you make the jump to 5e which isn't that different, and meantime you've been playing some side games, some shorter stuff, and the math isn't great and yeah the game is held together with homebrew but that's just part of the fun, isn't it? it's just part of how you like to play, writing stuff for this system, and in fact you like it so much that you end up publishing/kickstarting a whole 5e sci fi game, and isn't that neat?

but then 5e really starts to lose favor, or maybe you branching out into indie games just exposes you to a lot more people who hate it, even some people who talk about people who play and write for it like they're stupid or ignorant or part of the corporate missteps made by WotC or like it's unfathomable that people would come to this hobby from the most popular roleplaying game in the world, and that kind of sucks! but you're seeing the holes in the game more and more and you're realizing there's games you've been playing that are also ttrpgs that you never thought of that way, but it seems so obvious in retrospect!

and you start writing for these other games, and you back some kickstarters and find some really awesome discord communities and games that inspire you to write things on your own for the first time in a long time, and you start trying to fill in the gaps in your knowledge so you can keep up with people having academic conversations about games, using terms you don't understand and referencing creators and games and publishers and controversies you've never heard of, and you almost burn out so many times because it's A LOT even if you love it, and reminding yourself that you're not in competition with anyone for creating or knowledge or anything like that becomes part of the daily routine, and you don't have to know everything to keep creating and keep learning and keep playing - that's right, it's about playing! don't forget that! and then you're here.

you're here, and games are so fun and so cool and they're not all going to stick in your soul but so many do, so many teach you something or refresh you in unexpected ways and it's like that all the time.

You have the urge to present your family name like you usually do, but it you hold your tongue. You imagine it won’t have the same effect here as it does elsewhere. If anything, you might be in even more danger if these pirates find out who your father is. Unless your old captain had said something, for all the pirates know you’re just some unlucky bastard from the navy.

Erxik nods shortly. “Ventis,” he mimics. “Your captain told me that you are force of nature. That you will make my ship fly across these waters faster than any others. Is this true?”

You had been using your wind magic to help your ship along before you were sold. But you’d been doing it out of a desire to be liked and respected, and even with regular food and water and a comfortable place to sleep it had been an exhausting ordeal.

You don’t really care if these pirates like you so far.

“I have a particular relationship with the wind, yes,” you say, keeping your voice neutral.

Erxik smiles. “You will turn the winds in our favor, then. That is your purpose here.”

You stare at him. Does he really think you’re just going to use your powers to help pirates?

“This,” he continues, gesturing at the ropes binding you to the mast, “is just precaution. I did not want you to fly away, if that is something you can do.”

It is, but it takes a significant amount of energy.

“I am willing to discuss possibility of more comfortable accommodations, if you are willing to behave.”

hello! my name is crep/loony and I use any pronouns!! i started this blog because i’ve been really interested in the whump community for some time (since like maybe October?). It pretty much has all my favorite elements of stuff all put into one genre loll. I don’t have any plans to start a long-term story as of now, but that could change in the future! I have a ton of characters, but I mainly just use them for roleplaying (if you are interested in roleplaying with me i’m totally down to try it out and see how we mesh together!!!)

some fun facts about me: my favorite color is pink, i’ve been roleplaying for around 7 years (online for closer to 5), i love coming up with new characters and intertwining them with other people’s characters!!! it’s really fun to see how they interact with each other for me. it’s like how you played w barbie’s as a kid but infinitely better. for roleplaying i’ll be using tumblr dms, discord, and also roblox. i really love garfield, and i am autistic with my primary special interest being Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll!!!

So, I've realized I'm not as excited about the CYOA as I have been in the past, which is why I've been taking so long between entries. But instead of abandoning it, I'm going to finish it off and make it have an even 30 parts. This will be the last entry where you can choose which direction it goes in, so let's decide together what the ending will be! No nuance, you have to pick one option here, and I will write something to cap it off nice and neat by extrapolating from the vibes here.

Valen immediately goes red all the way to the tips of his ears, which twitch. "They're naturally high in a compound that is of interest to me for a research project." He sounds mortified to be talking about this. "I'm sorry. I won't come back for them. I'll forget all about it. That's all it was. I would never come here to harm any humans."

"Um," Felix says. "I don't really get it, but that's too silly to make up as a lie, I guess."

Valen sinks down, shoulders at his ears, not making eye contact.

Well, now you know. The vampire you've rescued was here collecting mushrooms for a research project. He seems...decent enough.

YEAR OF THE FANGAN - OCTOBER EDITION

ꕥ DANGANRONPA: REJUVENATION ꕥ

…So, fun fact, this particular story was never meant to be covered here.

For context, it's been a small inside joke of mine since starting this that only Danganronpa Rejuvenation is banned from getting a YOTF entry. This isn't because the content's bad or anything, but rather because it's the only fangan out there that I can't give an unbiased overview towards. While there's certainly works on this list I like more, this particular one's the nearest and dearest to my heart, which makes breaking it down extremely difficult for me. However, with the recent release of the remake, it felt wrong of me to gloss over this story. So buckle up, since this is going to be a slightly different YOTF segment than the others!

As an overview, the story follows sharpshooter Tsukiko Masayoshi, who joined a program called Rejuvenation that intends to re-create the Ultimate system of old. However, Monokuma ends up taking over and turning the situation into a killing game, resulting in Tsukiko trying to take on those who succumb to the motives. This general overview actually outlines my favorite part of this story: the central theme. The entire story takes on an exploration of justice vs. vengeance, something that's explored in nearly every character and gives most story-relevant actions rather gray morality-wise as a result. This is explored especially well in Tsukiko, who's… certainly something, lol.

But speaking of the characters, they're a highlight as well! While some certainly have more irrelevant story arcs than others, each character gets their time in the sun thanks to the aforementioned-theme creeping into each of their arcs, exploration of more nuance than their quirky personality traits, seeing just how the killing game affects them, or a combination of all three. This leaves daily life segments quite long as a result and, while that might be a turn-off for people who prefer to just get to the central mystery, it allows the cast to shine more as a result. Hell, even early deaths get stuff to do in the optional FTEs!

However, while I really enjoy the foundation left by the original story, I really, really recommend the remake to be the version of it checked out first. Outside of some small polishing up done to certain pieces of writing, it also allows some slight interactivity via the CYOA workskin. Not only does this help keep character-centric arcs more self-contained and take away less from the plot of the current chapter, but it also provides an even more interactive version of the trial (and a version of it that'll fully be seen in about early December or so).

FORMAT: Written

WHERE TO FIND IT: Ao3 (for both the original and remake)

FAVORITE CHAPTER: Chapter 5. The daily life starts by exploring the remaining cast members extremely well, ties in some relaxation with a major plot revelation around the middle, gives endgame information near the end, and closes with the most explosive moment in the story. Meanwhile, the deadly life follows up on this, both continuing to explore the characters as well as provide endgame info.

FAVORITE CHARACTER: Ryou Ishiyama. Despite being invited to Rejuvenation as their tai chi master, a combination of his inferiority-superiority complex and being the resident butt-monkey leaves him perpetually kicked around by the narrative instead. Still, he's a good guy at heart, no matter how vindictive and petty he can be at times.

OTHER STANDOUT CHARACTERS: Tsukiko Masayoshi, the main character whose confident, bullheaded nature and views on justice really clash with the side cast, and Koto Mikami, whose shtick of "nihilistic asshole eager to drag people down to being just as miserable as him" hides my personal favorite bits of writing in this story.

CYOA Part 5

You held the box tighter to yourself. Boxes of pizza and a strange pair of goggles don't just fall from the sky. One box opened revealing an extra large pepperoni.

You looked up. At the same time you heard some cursing and clattering above you.

"Hello?" you asked confused and a little scared.

More whispers above you. You squinted trying to see what or who that was. From the sound of it - multiple someones.

Suddenly one of them decided (or was pushed by the others) to reveal themselves. A very, very tall someone. Someone definitely not human with a shell on his back and three fingered hands.

"Um hi," they said shyly, waving hand. They leaned down picking up the goggles and putting them on his head. "Please don't scream."
