♡Aventurine has spent the last two months perfectly picking out the gifts to give you, making note that each gift has a deeper meaning behind it

♡To most, he is a heartless businessman who only cares about gaining power, but his heart is fully yours

♡He cares deeply about you and even though he goes about this day very bombastically he does not treat it like a show

♡The money he spends is to show you the best things in life, not to buy your affection and he knows that you love him for who he is not for what he has 

♡One of the gifts he gets you is a ring with an aventurine stone, it is designed to match the ring he got with your birthstone

♡Blade is not accustomed to this day and what it entails 

♡He is confused as to why every shop suddenly has flowers and heart-themed goods to sell and asks you about it

♡You explain to him that Valentine’s Day is coming up and what usually happens on that day

♡Upon hearing this Blade takes time to think about how he wants to approach the situation

♡He is not a big talker and wants to show you that he cares about you but doesn’t get why that has to be done with a box of chocolates

♡To him, Valentine’s should be spent with you doing something meaningful

♡So when the day comes around he takes you to a location where no one else will be

♡It’s a weeping willow tree that overlooks a lake filled with bioluminescent life

♡He had set up a picnic for the both of you and explained that he would like to remember this day with only you 

♡After you finish eating Blade moves so that he is leaning against the base of the tree and you are in front of him with your back against his chest looking out the the beautiful view in front of you

♡You are in his arms all night as you spend hours talking and truly being together

♡He gets nervous when Valentine’s Day approaches

♡He is not big on celebration and wants to do something nice for you but even with all of his knowledge Dan is not sure what the best thing to do is

♡First, he tries to check off the typical list, he gets your favorite flowers, and favorite candy, plans a nice meal he does what he knows is supposed to happen

♡But he gets stuck on the gift, every option feels superficial to him, like there is no real meaning it is just throwing money at a day

♡Nothing with you is meaningless, you mean the world to him why would he ever overlook any detail

♡So he is surprised when he is woken up to breakfast in bed by you 

♡You told him that Valentine’s Day is not about one person, it is about both people in the relationship 

♡All of the work he put in is appreciated but he does not have to go crazy to prove his love to you

♡Everyday Dan shows you that he loves and cares about you just because today has a name does not change anything

♡Before you go out to dinner, you stop at a bookstore where you each pick out a book for the other which is the best gift either one of you could get

♡You both enjoy reading and having a book that was chosen for you by your s/o has more meaning than any stuffed bear could

♡You were not expecting anything to happen on Valentine’s Day

♡Yes Dr. Ratio loves you and shows you that, however, he has never been big on celebrations like this

♡He views them as a ploy by capitalism to sell off cheap products to lovesick fools

♡So you prepared yourself for a day like any other

♡While he may not believe in holidays for himself, he knows what they mean to you so when you wake up you are surprised to see a fruit salad in front of you with all of the pieces cut into hearts

♡You are taken back and do not know where this could have come from until you look at who is holding the salad

♡If he is going to do Valentine’s Day he is going to do it right

♡As you wake up fully and look around your shared apartment you see that all towels have been folded into hearts, most of the decorations have been replaced with red and pink versions of the item, and the most amazing display of flowers you have ever seen is sitting on your dining room table

♡He wants you to know that he loves you not just on this day but every day and he puts in the effort to show that

♡Gallagher is a very classic man he will be picking you up with flowers in hand to take you out on Valentine’s Day 

♡You swoon when you see him in his black suit having the first few buttons of his white dress shirt undone 

♡He is the perfect gentleman, opening doors for you, placing his hand on your lower back as you walk, and pulling out your chair for you

♡When you are with him he is going to make sure you are treated right

♡Nothing in the world is more important to him than you and he takes every opportunity to show you this, having a major holiday that he can dedicate to you, he is going to run with it

♡At dinner, he chooses to sit next to you instead of across from you

♡He wants to not only be able to look at you but be able to have physical contact with you as well

♡Gallagher is a fan of sharing everything with you so whatever he gets will also be feeding to you as well

♡He takes care of you and will make sure you are full and happy before you leave the restaurant 

♡After dinner, he takes you to a cute little ice cream shop

♡You have a very cute moment where you get whipped cream on your nose and he kisses it off

♡Geppy is very excited for Valentine’s 

♡He had made sure his calendar was free so he could spend every minute with you 

♡You two had planned to stay in and binge all of the shows and movies that you two had wanted to watch together

♡Like always he makes you breakfast and showers you with affection before moving to the couch

♡He had woken up before you and set up a pillow in the living room, he even put fairy lights around the whole thing so that there was the perfect amount of cozy lighting

♡Inside the fort were pillows, blankets, and all of your favorite snacks 

♡Even though you were staying in he still wanted it be be special and not like any other day watching TV together

♡Hours go by as you are held in his arms being covered in kisses every so often until night comes

♡Gepard had ordered ahead from your favorite food place and made sure to get your usual order 

♡It’s the moments like these that he loves the most, seeing you in your pajamas, hair not done, just being comfortable and 100% yourself

♡Jing Yuan wanted to do something special for Valentine’s Day this year now that he had you in his life

♡In the past, he had ignored the day and treated it like any other but he is changing that for you

♡He gets a mini flower garden, live music, and the best chef he can find, and gives Yanqing an impossible task so he isn’t bothered

♡He arranges this all to be set up in the spot where you two first met, wanting to spend the night celebrating how far you two had come and the bond that you now share

♡You are not to do anything but arrive at the time in place he told you looking nice

♡When you arrive he is waiting there for you with a box of carefully decorated pastries 

♡He wanted to give you something as sweet as you are 

♡He takes your hand and leads you to the table where the food is waiting for you 

♡As you eat you are accompanied by live music in the background creating the perfect atmosphere 

♡After the meal, he takes you to a Terrance away from everyone and everything, and takes out a scroll he had in his pocket

♡Written on it is a speech he had prepared for you going over all of the reasons he loves you and detailing just how much he cares about you

 ♡After reading it the music starts up again and he leads you in a slow dance where he holds you close for the rest of the night

Luka

♡Valentine’s Day happened to fall on the same day as a big fight for him

♡You two had already discussed that you wanted him to go to the fight and celebrate with you later even though Luka was ready to skip the fight completely

♡After all of the training he had put in you could not let him miss this 

♡He agrees and makes sure to have plans ready immediately after the fight ends

♡When you arrive at the arena you follow your usual fight routine with him

♡You put Vaseline on his face to protect it, make sure his mouth guard is in, and oil up his arm to ensure it performs well

♡Kissing him good luck he heads into the ring

♡The fight is not going as well as you hoped it would and Luka is now tied in the final round

♡The ref calls for a time out and you run over to Luka 

♡Seeing the love in your eyes gave him the strength he needed and to proceeded to win the fight with a KO

♡You were so excited for him that you jumped into the right and grabbed onto him planting kisses across his face 

♡He grabbed onto you picking you up and spinning you around 

♡His happiness didn’t come from the win, it came from having someone whom he loved so much here in his arms 

Luocha

♡Luocha was happy to have you in his life and had asked you what you wanted to do for Valentine’s Day 

♡In asking you once he got the answer he would make sure that whatever you said would happen without any issues

♡Whatever you wanted he would deliver you knew this 

♡So it was no surprise that you woke up on Valentine's Day to exactly what you had asked for weeks ago

♡He doesn't say much preferring to sit back and watch your reaction 

♡That is where he gets his joy, it's from watching you be happy, the smile on your face, and the sparkle in your eyes

♡He will always make sure you have what you want it doesn't matter what day it is

♡You are his everything and therefore you deserve everything 

♡Nothing is out of the question for you

♡Of course, Luocha has a few surprises for you like the neatly wrapped box you find amongst flower petals

♡Opening it you find a necklace with a stone pendant, the stone is unlike any other you have seen before

♡Asking him what it is he tells you that he found it a while ago before he met you on a planet he forgets the name of, this stone is meant to be given to the love of your life so that the glow of the stone signifies the undying love you feel for each other

Sampo

♡Valentine’s Day is one of Sampo's biggest business days

♡He makes a lot of money selling to last-minute gift buyers 

♡But this year he has no interest in this, for the first time in his life there is something more important than money

♡All he can think about is what to do with you and how he can put a smile on your face 

♡Instead of using his powers to gain from others, he uses them to get you a gift that he knows you will like 

♡There is a band that you have been talking about for months and there was a show coming up soon that you wanted to go to but tickets sold out immediately

♡Sampo suggested that he could just sneak the two of you in but you were against this 

♡So during your Valentine's Day picnic that he had planned, you found an envelope underneath your heart-shaped sandwich 

♡You were confused but Sampo just sat there with a smile waiting for you to open it

♡When you did you found a card that was clearly handmade, when you opened it you found the tickets but there were more 

♡Inside the card was a note written by Sampo, he has always been a smooth talker but this was different

♡He poured his heart out in this note and truly opened up about his love for you 

Welt

♡Welt has had Valentine’s Day planned out for months

♡He is a romantic at heart and has waited for so long to have someone to spend this day with 

♡As the day approaches he asks that you keep your schedule clear and he will do the same

♡What he has planned is to use the express to take you on a tour of the most beautiful parts of the galaxy, Pom Pom is in on this making sure that the only people on the express are you, Welt, and Pom Pom 

♡You two were completely alone and he was making the most out of this 

♡He had candles set up so that most of the light would come from the stars and suns that you were passing by

♡As you traveled he would tell you about every planet and regale you with information he knew you would be interested in 

♡Food was wheeled in by Pom Pom who was very happy to take part in this

♡Because you were also so kind and respectful to Pom Pom and the Express, Pom Pom was glad to be able to return the effort

♡The entire day was spent being with Welt doing what you both loved most, exploring

Who fell first, Deirdre or Gale?

Who fell harder?

Were there any things outside of the main romance plot beats that they had to overcome?

Well here is a real time pic of them realizing simultaneously that they were already neck deep in a romance without having clocked it up until that very moment

So much more rambling under the cut!

Deirdre and Gale started off as respectful colleagues. He had his little ‘o wow a warlock huh’ and she had her little ‘yeah what of it wizard boy?’ Both incredibly polite about it of course. They gravitated to one another immediately because they are both well read and spoken and kinda looked at the rest of their companions like

So in actuality they buddied up and then got teased relentlessly for being like an old married couple when neither one of them was even in the realm of romantic attraction. Gale because…. Bomb In Chest. And Deirdre having an internal incredibly well hidden behind bardic shenanigans PTSD nightmare from the horrors she witnessed during her imprisonment in Menzoberranzan.

It was only when they started sharing their magic; the weave scene, and the pic above with Dede sharing some fey vibes, that they started to shift from platonic to romantic. I would say Gale fell a little harder and faster because he just seems like that kind of person to me? Like he knows all the reasons he shouldn’t and that kinda unconsciously eggs him on even more. I’d say the crisis with Mystra’s order thru Elminster pushed them both into taking the step of actually admitting feelings tho. Dede couldn’t stand the thought of losing him. Especially to himself.

As for the last two questions… yeah. Gale’s big grand gestures got them into a bit of hot water during and post game. His constant need to prove himself worried Deirdre a lot about his self worth beyond what he could do for her. She had to go through a lot of talks with him to let him know he was enough. Just him. As he was. No magic or pageantry even tho she loves that about him too.

And of course, Dede has a TON of intimacy issues. A lot was done to her without her consent thru her life. Tadpole being the most recent offense. So she doesn’t really like surprises and has a hard time letting people in. Which is funny considering how bright and bombastic her personality is. She uses it mainly to cover the hurt. Not to say she isn’t well adjusted. She spent many many years with her patron working thru the stuff the lolthsworn drow did to her. Tadpole just kinda inflamed the wound again.

So yeah! I think it was actually several years before he even proposed. And several more after that until they got married. But the wedding was HUGE. Her family is gigantic and they have a wide social circle with the folk of Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate, and the Druid Grove which they still frequently visited. Gale went above and beyond constructing a castle out of flowers just for the occasion (dedes Patron helped).

Year One vs Zero Year: A Tale of Two Batmen

In the introduction to the Batman: Year One collected edition, Dennis O’Neil writes about the impetus behind the post-crisis reboot—things had become dated and it was time to revamp their most iconic characters: Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. “The writers assigned to the task had quick and clear ideas about how to update Superman and Wonder Woman, but Batman was a problem. He was fine just as he was.” Batman: Year One was not a story that was trying to reinvent Batman, it was a story that was trying to distill him, to revisit and retell his origin for a new era of DC storytelling. Whatever you may think of Frank Miller, he and David Mazzucchelli certainly succeeded with that goal.

While I don’t have a nice clear editorial quote like that for Batman: Zero Year, it’s clear that Synder was trying to do the same with the story. Zero Year is a Batman origin for the new era of storytelling that was the New 52. It has its nods to Miller—it has to, simply existing after Year One’s influential rewrite of Bruce’s origin—but it owes far more to the Batman of the golden age in it's story beats. It is not just Batman: Year One for the New 52, it is the Batman origin of the post-flashpoint comics, it's art and storytelling reflecting this Batman of a new era.

Batman’s origin has always been consistent in its strokes: Bruce Wayne’s parents are killed by a mugger. Devastated, the young boy swears to devote his life to justice. He trains both body and mind, until finally ready to begin, a bat flies through the window, and he takes it as an sign that he should become Batman—a creature that strikes fear in the hearts of criminals. It can be summarized in a page or two to get the audience up to speed.

Neither Year One nor Zero Year change any of the fundamental pieces, but the narratives that surround them are vastly different. Year One seeks to tell a Batman origin grounded in reality as much as it can. In an afterward by David Mazzuchelli in the Batman: Year One collected edition he writes that “with year one, we sought to craft a credible Batman, grounded in a world we recognize”. The main enemy that Bruce Wayne faces is corruption: in the police and in the leading families of Gotham. Beside Gordon and Alfred, the other members of the Batman mythos that are present are Selina Kyle, just beginning to put on the catsuit and Harvey Dent prior to becoming Two Face, both of them surrounded by plausibility and grit. The Joker gets a single name drop at the end. It takes up four issues and covers the span of a year, covering the emergence of Batman’s mission

In contrast, Zero Year is bombastic. It’s a story full of bright colors and fantastic events: explosions, blimp chases, and Gotham city cut off and run as the Riddler’s personal fiefdom. It’s longer—spanning 10 issues—and covers a significantly shorter period of time. In it, Batman faces the Joker, The Riddler, and a bone-mutated mad scientist foe who’s name I don’t remember. Pamela Isley and the Penguin are alluded to as well. The giant penny plays a role in the plot. It calls back to many pieces of golden age lore, such as Bruce’s Uncle Philip Kane, and his love interest Julie Madison. (For a more modern retelling of the golden age Batman’s origin, see Secret Origins (1986) #6)

There is also a difference in attitude between the two origins. Year One is a comic that is trying to escape the bounds of genre; Zero Year is a comic that revels in it. Part of it is the tone—Year One is setting itself in contrast to the Batman of the past in its commitment to realism rather than melodrama. Part of it is the art. In terms of color, the original printing of Year One and Zero Year are very similar. In Year One, this is because of technical limitations. There are only so many colors, most of them bright, and still Richmond Lewis works to create a strong sense of atmosphere to highlight the noir-type story that is being told. Zero Year uses these colors as a deliberate homage to comics of the past. It’s filled with bright pinks, blues, yellows, and greens set in contrast to each other. It’s beautiful. It’s also a clear stylistic choice.

Richmond redid the colors of Year One for later reprintings. While beautiful, they are far more subdued and muted. It’s clearly the sort of look they wanted for Year One from the beginning, but could not achieve. In contrast, Zero Year stands out from the comics surrounding it in the first half of the New 52 precisely because everything else is illustrated in this overly realistic dull and gritty style.

This can also be seen in the Batman costumes themselves. While both Year One and Zero Year are drawing from the same original Batman costume from Detective Comics #27, they take different parts. Year One’s Batman suit has a simple and streamlined black and grey. The Zero Year suit keeps the purple gloves.

This contrast isn’t just in the origins themselves—it is the comics that surround and follow them as well. Year One and Zero Year are origins for two different eras of Batman. I’ve read primarily post-crisis Batman comics and am less familiar with the pre-crisis era, so I can’t say how much of the storylines that followed were specifically picking up on Year One’s influence, and how much was just the natural change in storytelling direction, but throughout the major Batman events of the Post-Crisis era, there is a throughline of sensibilities that they share with Year One. AsYear One set out to tell the grounded origin of the Batman, so do many of the foes and challenges he faces have this grounded nature to them as well. They all still have a larger than life feel, but the foes Batman faces tend to fall into the categories of crime (Knightfall, War Games), natural disasters (Contagion, Legacy, Cataclysm), and himself (all of them, but more specifically Murderer/Fugitive and arguably a Lonely Place of Dying as well). These are events that start from a realistic starting point that are magnified. Earthquakes, outbreaks of disease, a gang war—these are all things that could happen to any city. Any man could lose a son or be framed for murder. The heightened nature of these stories is what separates them from the real world.

(Even an event like No Man’s Land, with its premise of ‘Gotham getting kicked out the United States’ that stretches the suspension of disbelief, is intensely focused on what this means for the city that remains. It cares about grounding the fantastic events in real reactions.)

In contrast, post-flashpoint events tend to have this more fantastical feel. The Night of the Owls does not put Bruce up against ordinary corruption among the elite, but against a masked conspiracy with immortal assassins at their disposal. The driving force of Robin War is not the idealism of the We Are Robin movement against a city that doesn’t like or trust them, but a power play by the Court of Owls. In Night of the Monster Men, Batman and co. fight Kaiju-like monsters; there are themes of contagion throughout the story, but this isn’t a hopeless fight against that ancient enemy of humanity that is disease, it’s a thrilling, action-packed fight. One approach is not necessarily better than the other, but they are fundamentally different paradigms of storytelling. I remember reading Night of the Monster Men at the same time as the lead up to Bruce Wayne: Murdere/Fugitive and thinking that they didn’t feel anything alike.

 Unlike Year One, Zero Year does not feel like a origin point for this shift in narrative focus. The beginning of the new52, while having the benefit of being the beginning of a new era, also isn’t it—these storytelling trends could be seen in the comics leading up to Flashpoint as well. If I had to pick an event that started to show this shift, it would be Batman RIP. Morrison’s love for silver age comics and deep cuts to lore lead it to having that same fantastical feel. While the Batman of Morrison’s run is nominatively the one of Year: One, he fits more in line with the storytelling motivations of Zero Year—the callbacks to older ages (Morrisons’ Batman definitely wore the purple gloves), the extreme feats of survival, the larger than life events. Year One was an origin for an era that had come to an end.

A new Batman origin was inevitable, if for no other reason than the constant passage of time. One of the big differences between Year One and Zero Year is the sheer difference in the type of technology Batman uses in each. In Year One, there is no Bat-Computer. Bruce has his grappling hooks, his smoke bombs, his ultrasonic device that summons hoards of bats—It’s all far too simple for a Batman of today’s world. Zero Year has computers everywhere and Batman’s gadgets are upgrading to fit the glitz and advancement of the modern era. The New52 gave DC the chance to revisit it and for better or for worse, no one could call Zero Year, ‘Year One only set 30 years later’. Both works are products of their times, and both works show the audience not only the basic beats of Bruce’s origin, but also what a Batman story looks like. Together, they show the way that he has evolved as a character over the years. Maybe in 15 years, DC will put out another origin epic for Batman. Chances are, he’ll have changed yet again.

𖦹 when he's drunk, he is NOTICEABLY full of praise for you. turning on the waterworks does wonders sometimes. he reasons to himself its perfectly fucking fiiiine because he's just being honest!

𖦹 in truth, this is his indirect way of trying to get you on his level. he is tearing himself apart trying to make himself someone you want to be around.

𖦹 that kindness wears itself down the more you interact with others.

𖦹 he grits his fists, and snarl-grins at the distraction. he could SWEAR he was developing the ability to get hungover again with how his head throbbed painfully when you grin and cackle at someones joke.

𖦹 he starts taking every bit of laughter you spend on someone else as a personal offense.

𖦹 he's kind of torn between himself. in feeling more aggressive, its almost like he becomes partially subdued. this could come off as depression to others, so maybe his claims of you being like his thread to sanity were true?

𖦹 he leans into this HARD. he hates seeing you so concerned but hey, that meant there was something in your heart for him right?

𖦹 all in all he becomes this big sad cuddlebug in front of you meanwhile becoming increasingly violent with anyone who glances at you on the field.

𖦹 im not sure if he'd be honest with his intentions ever. he also doesn't entirely lie to you, he just... heavily dramatizes things. i think he's a bit too lucid, funnily enough, too let himself completely let himself express this.

𖦹 one thing is for certain, he is waiting for you. only cause for concern- the longer you make him wait the less he will be lying to you, and the more you are going to be late-night visited.

Inspired by the "we had King and Lionheart on 8tracks" post going around and prompted by the latest work by Lyv, a musician doing fan songs for BG3 characters, who reached Dame Aylin and (very correctly) concluded "yeah, this one needs to be a 7-minute metal track" - here's my personal selection of things I listen to to instantly hop into my Aylin mindset. I mean, I loved 8tracks and I have King and Lionheart on all my playlists forever, but here I think I'm going for an older feel, when we had LiveJournal posts of pertinent lyric extracts with mp3s of the songs and YouSendIt links expiring in a week.

Aylin, for me, tends towards bombastic and cheesy symphonic/power metal, with lavish guitar solos and dramatic lyrics about fighting dark lords and riding dragons and seeking magical swords, lovingly crafted labyrinthine fantasy lore stretching over and across albums, often delivered in somewhat awkward English. But also just a lot of big, loud feelings that I love listening to metal for. She was made to grace album covers, is what I'm saying.

Without further ado, under the cut I give you my 8 Metal Tracks To Fly Around And Smite Your Father-In-Law To (but it's actually 16 because I provided an alt option for each song).

Seeking Vengeance by Unleash the Archers

Like a wave of death, I wash over all who stand in my way, there's no redemption now

Self-explanatory in all things, I'd say. Big, powerful vengeance song with moments of nuance, in that we get "I am the falling blade" and "Who have I become? I know not where I've gone to" both packed in there. And also, the song just slaps.

Alt: Afterlife, the song that provides a counterplay with "I won't waste my freedom, vengeance will not make me whole". And also some killer instrumentals.

2. Spillways by Ghost

All your faith, all your rage, all your pain It ain't over now, and I ain't talking about forgiveness

Dealing with anger and darkness that exist within you and needing to find an outlet to stop it all from overflowing? Say no more. Ghost is a fave of mine but most of their stuff wouldn't really fit here, theme-wise. This song is perfect though.

Alt: Hunter's Moon is another one of my go-tos to ponder some inevitable violent vengeance.

3. Where Angels Fear to Fly by Battle Beast

They say the darkest hours are just before the dawn That we must die to be reborn I'm still alive, I'm ready for the pain When I fall, I'll rise again I spread my wings and like the midnight sun I will be rising

Five million years ago I saw these guys open for Nightwish and sing about Guts and Griffith from Berserk and got hooked. This is a far more recent offering, and it's both a banger and super on the nose for what I'm looking for here.

Alt: Wings of Light which hits the spot in a very similar vein.

4. NightSky by Kamelot

This is unironically my Selûne song and my brain loves tying it into the whole "Nightsong was only ever a curse" thing.

5. Rain of Fury by Rhapsody of Fire

These guys won my heart a couple of decades ago when they first sang about winning the dark lord with an emerald sword and they never fail to get me pumped. Some classic stuff to really get you going, get you on that quest, get you through that dungeon.

Alt: March Against the Tyrant, primarily for the gentle farewell-before-battle "Let me feel once more how much life you have on your lips" opening.

6. Charcoal Grace I: Prey by Caligula's Horse

I could bind my heart to anger And hold my breath for bliss that was promised me While the desperate hands of vengeance demand to deliver me

I actually have a very hard time picking between Part I and Part IV (and I usually don't listen to one without the other) - in fact the entire very heavy suite about reckoning with a horrible father is… something else. This is absolutely an outlier style-wise and genre-wise as it's pure prog, but it really taps into a specific brand of anger for me and I love it.

Alt: The aforementioned Charcoal Grace IV: Give Me Hell aka "Give back the years you stole and beg me".

7. Amaranth by Nightwish

Caress the one, the never-fading rain in your heart

Listen, this one is here purely because I imprinted on the music video with the wounded angel when I was 15. But also there's a couple of amaranth-as-tied-to-immortality "never-fading" references in it so it stays.

Alt: Sleeping Sun for a calm, sad, yearning time.

8. The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight by Blind Guardian

A non-angry one to end things on! Blind Guardian is one of my favourite bands ever and so they were bound to be here. It's been really hard to stick to one two songs per artist. Anyway, I wouldn't go with this one as super directly applicable lyrically as it's a Tristan and Isolde song, but the chorus gets me, I love listening to it, and I maintain it has the correct Vibes.

My thoughts on the Fontaine characters rn (pre 4.0)

I saw someone making a post about their thoughts and they were tragically wrong and I disagreed. So here I am, being opinionated.

I'm not gonna discuss leaks, I'm just talking about the character designs and what lore we know from the trailer and teaser :))

Lyney

So, Lyney is great. I love that he's kind of sussy, and his teaser that recently came out is almost... Sinister. And yet, he also checks the boxes of being really fun and extroverted! Venti vibes tbh.

Design wise? His animations are the best in the game, hands down. They suit the performance aspect of his character perfectly and are almost enough to make me pull for him.

Tragically, his character design isn't really for me. I think the simplicity works with the bombastic animations, and I'm glad to see he's wearing a reasonable outfit for the job he does (a rarity in Genshin). And yet, I'm a bit too much of a lesbian to be uber interested in the twinky direction his design leans.

Not pulling.

Lynette

So she's super cute. We have got a lot of cat girls already (I think Lyney should have also been a cat-person tbh) but I love that Lyney isn't actually doing cat things. Like, she's this subdued introvert, no meowing during her attacks or curling up in boxes like Kirara. She's just a person.... Who's also a cat.

I like her character design better than Lyney's; the blue just stands out a lot more than his red does, and the big bow is a better centerpiece to her design than Lyney's hat is to his. Plus, her animations are also nice.

We're getting her for free so I likely won't pull, but I am already preparing artifacts to build her on my account.

Freminet

Have I said how much I like sibling dynamics? These three actually seem pretty close and like they will gasp interact with each other! In comparison to the likes of the Kamisatos, this is miraculous.

I know several people who love this guy, and I do think he looks good. I saw some complaints about his hair cut (I think it's adorable), and the chunky boots & coat really serve to emphasise his awkwardness without sacrificing aesthetics.

Unfortunately, he's a physical claymore character, so it's a big skip from me.

Focalors/Furina

Well she's a brat huh. I worry after Raiden that they'll destroy Furina's character arc in order to make her more palatable, but I want her to go full Marie Antoinette. All the lore with the Oceanids disliking her and the general stuff about using the court for entertainment make me very interested in her.

As a design, I just dislike the twin tails. I love the blazer and the huge gem and the hat that's actually a crown!! Like, Furina is extravagant and over the top, obviously self obsessed - she looks perfect in that regard.

Since she's the archon and she's Hydro, she'll probably be broken meta wise. I'll likely pull, but mostly to make cool teams with her, not because she's a fave of mine specifically.

Neuvilette

... Father?

FR though, I understand why several people are crazy about this man. I do wish he looked a bit older since that's sort of where his characterisation is - he's done with Furina's shit and he's doing all the actual work of running Fontaine. With the elf ears, I expect him to be some sort of long-life species - he has no visible Vision and his hair kind of looks oceanid-like, so I figure he's not actually human. That along with the slits in his eyes. I hope he turns out to be older than Furina, and that he has a kind of reluctant dad & spoiled daughter relationship with her; we do see him tell her off in the teaser.

Neuvilette is the most feminine tall man character and the hair is a great aspect of the design. The colour palette is good and I do like the robes since he's a Judge, however I think it might get a bit boring to look at when you're playing as him - which is probably why the hair is so dramatic, in order to bring interest to the design.

He'll probably be Hydro and he'll probably be a catalyst based on that outfit (it's not exactly maneuverable enough for anything else ':))). I am interested in pulling almost a 100%.

Wriothesley

Another man???

I don't understand people talking about the lack of husbandoes in Fontaine, like look at these fine gentlemen.

We don't have much official info on Wriothesley so I'm gonna dip a little into leaks here, skip if you don't wanna know. He is some sort of prison warden which I bop with - it's an expected expansion on the justice landscape of Fontaine. He's on the rough side of the Fontaine infrastructure, in comparison to most of the other characters. That interests me since it feeds more into the duality themes of Fontaine, though currently we're unevenly biased rn to the more santized characters.

Design wise he's one of my favourites. White/black/red looks so good, as does his kind of punk esque chains. The tie puts me off somewhat, like he looks sort of smart and put together, but then the rest of the design undercuts that.

Leaks say Wriothesley is a physical standard banner five star. This fills me with fear. I also don't know what his actual personality will be, so let's say I'm undecided on pulling him.

Charlotte

I liked her personality and en VA in that one TCG event, unfortunately much like that event, Charlotte looks boring. She's cute, whatever, but she doesn't seem particularly story relevant and her design hasn't captured me.

I'm just not that interested.

Sigewinne(?)

Okay, she's cuter than Charlotte she's a sea slug person so immediately more interesting. She was also hanging out with Wriothesley, which is so adorable considering how different they seem.

We're dipping back into leaks here, but it seems like she might be another Hydro healer. I've seen people annoyed by this, but I'm perfectly fine with it - I don't have Kokomi and I like Nilou bloom as much as the next person.

If Sigewinne is a four star, I hope she's on a banner for a cool five star.

Navia

I know a lot of people like this woman. Taylor Swift etc (I am not overly into Taylor Swift), but I think Navia could be cool.

I find her design overcrowded. I do think this suits the fact that we're playing with French Revolution ideas and she's part of the bourgeoisie, so ofc she's overdecorated and elaborate in her fashion. Even though it makes sense, I still don't like the arsthetic of it.

On the other hand, I do like the yellow - it's not a colour we see in too many Genshin designs. I don't really like how it fits with the blue jewellery though.

Personality wise, I worry a bit that she's gonna be our waifu bait, but they did Dehya's characterisation really well without falling into that trap. Navia could be very fun and I think there's a lot of promise in the idea that she might be a class traitor, teaming up with us against the Fontaine government (wow Genshin loves a corrupt government huh).

Will I pull? She's a geo claymore user and my triple crowned Itto is already collecting dust. That's a no from me.

Clorinde

I've seen so many people mad at Clorinde when I think she looks great. Her outfit is simpler than is typical for Genshin, but that's cos she's a no-nonsense fighter type! Like how we saw with Lyney, more muted designs often mean more dramatic animations, and we already saw Clorinde doing some dynamic fight stuff in the trailer.

She really interests me in that she's a champion duellist, strong enough that even Childe wants to fight her. We see Clorinde works directly beside Neuvilette in the trailer, so she must be high up in position. A gun and a sword? She's trying to kill Navia, but the Devs describe their relationship as "complicated"??

Clorinde is an Electro woman and these are always queer fyi.

I hope she's pretty straight laced, but not quite in the Sara way. She's boring tbh, mostly because she is always answering to someone else, and she gets so little screen time. For Clorinde to work, I think she needs to have independence and apt presence in the story to be explored - not just a prop/obstacle.

Her personality makes me fearful, but rn I'm pulling 100%.

If nothing else Soldier is a character heavily influenced by and vulnerable to propaganda, people telling him what to do and what to be—and has perhaps been this way his whole life.

He is also staunchly loyal to his ideals, however faulty the foundations of those ideals may be. This does mean that for the most part he is incredibly friend-oriented first (read: WAR!), team-oriented second (also read: WAR!)—but again, like in WAR!, can be easily swayed if someone pushes just the right buttons on him. <- I mostly reference WAR! here because that's when the most focus is on Soldier in any comics (as well as Demo by extent)...

And it seems to be that the right buttons to push to make Soldier tick has to do with the foundations of his identity. He puts on a very hardened and bombastic image because I think that's what he aspires most to be—that hero figure from the comics, the *you* that the We Want YOU poster was pointing to—because maybe he doesn't know what else he *can* be.

No one's ever told him.

ok, so, we can easily say that he's completely brainwashed by propaganda and the whole "good soldiers follows orders" bit (god I'm getting strong flashbacks from star wars ughh), but the next question I'm having is: if he's told to do something bad, or he felt like he had to do it, would he fell bad afterwards?? like- does he feel guilty of his actions, or he believes so strongly that he did the right thing that he doesn't even begin to think he may have not done good??

also, like you said, he's extremely loyal, both to people and to ideals, but what happens when those 2 go against each other?? what happens if, for example, demo says America is not so great?? Will he hear him out or completely cut ties?? cause in WAR! he felt a personal insult, not an opposition to his ideals, so would the reaction be the same??

for the second part, I never saw it like that, uh, he really does have some identity issues. he feels like one of those people who NEEDS a goal in life, and, whether he actually believed it or not at the beginning, and found one in the greatest porpoise for his country. usually, such idealized goals bring with them insecurities, so now is to understand what he is insecure about.

we know he doesn't like to be called a civilian cause obv that shatter his delusion of being an important part of the army, but what else is he insecure about?? maybe his strength?? things related to his masculinity?? but in the main comics we see him with the night gown from heavy's sisters (I don't remember if it was zhanna's), and he seems pretty ok with it, so it's nothing about his "external" masculinity, u know??

also, I think the way he was brainwashed by propaganda kinda indicates us towards what kind of childhood he had. usually, and I mean it in the most generic way possible, the most patriotic sentiments come from the middle-lower classes, not low enough to perceive the flaws of the system, but low enough to not be able to have higher education, putting all the fate in the government because "they do good things. they made the neighborhood safer cause they got rid of those immigrants!!". we also have to consider that he was probably raised after ww1, went through the 29' crisis, and maybe reached adulthood at the start of ww2, so kinda understandable how he became so patriotic... also also, he probably had someone in his family who went in the trenches, so LIKE-

the conclusion of this rant?? soldier is brainwashed by propaganda and has as a life goal to be the "American hero", whether the means necessary.

DWC Feb 2024 - Day 1 - Flirt/Casualty - Braedyn

"Notes"

Ruecien was asleep when I got here, enjoying  the last rays of sunlight. Did I only dream he was a poet?

Junarra flirts, in her way, with everyone. That ‘Trade Princess’ charm. She’s an asset, whether she knows it or not. I’m grateful she is here, for the quiet ones.

Kerrana keeps her expressions close, and I see a glimpse of myself a few years down the road.

Khidell is passionate about his pleasures. From chocolate cake to Hearthstone to thistle. He is not a frequent guest, but he reminds me to pay attention to the moment.

Onyx had been a surprise; but wasn’t she always? I am never sure how to take her bombastic declarations. The coffee is a casualty of her capricious nature. Would she really dump it in  someone’s lap? … Or was it just a comment meant to shock us into thinking about her? Vixannya slides through the evening like smoke curling from a candle. Her confidence is alluring.

Kaisina was finding her place. Sharing was a double edged sword for her and she danced, trying to find the balance between opening her heart and pressing against boundaries. The dragon racer, Hylcind, had a rough and tumble look about her; a life well-lived, and a heart that remembered it, apparently. Ruecien had felt badly for not knowing, I think, but she seemed to take it as a gift that someone else remembered her late husband. Gracious in a way most might envy.

Sana had become sweeter through the years, though still so guarded. Her efforts were steady. I feel she’s doing better for herself, but I am also sure I would never know if I was wrong.

Andaeros always teases, but it’s never too sharp and does not cut the way others do. He brings  smiles and warmth with him frequently. He rounds many of our edges, I think.

I sincerely feel this song suits how Kadira was caught, lived, and being seen by Areelu over the past 70 years. Kadira has sepnt so much time alone in he world and she's purposely made to do so by Areelu. And mind, Areelu likes her. This hits Kadira on the nose far to well on how she sees herself, her relationship with Areelu, and eventually the world she's stumbled into when everyone in her family is gone and it's simply her and memories... and she doesn't have all her memories. She knows she's struggling and she's trying to hide all of that during this crusade.

Kadira being seen by the powers that be from Nerosyan and those a little closer to Drezen. The working folk, the soldiers, and most of the officers like Kadira, but Kadira is basically kicking away old concepts that the clergy of Nerosyan and the Queen cling to, and they are not liking this one bit.

Two very broken people who might accidentally stab each other if they're not careful, who genuinely fall in love and save each other. Kadira sees Daeran suffering under the Other, and while Daeran can't pin point who made Kadira suffer, he sees the pain in her eyes as clearly she sees his. They're a little shaken and a little broken after the Crusade, but they're hopeful.

I don't think it's a major fight scene as a fighting montage. From fighting under Kenabras to the last battle with Areelu, Kadira feels like she's marching to her death, this song hits hard and is almost bombastic in it's catholic trappings. Perfect for the Angel Path.

Kadira has not cheated death, she's earned a life, and while she is quavery about it, she's ready to try something far less damaging than leading a crusade with broken memories, a broken childhood, and a broken mother.

carson: lightly toasted with a very thin layer of butter on top. look me in the eye and tell me he'd like it done any other way.

mrs hughes: not the biggest fan of toast. prefers scones, but when she absolutely has to eat it, she likes it toasted with jam only. she is eventually influenced by mr carson and puts minimal butter before she slathers it in strawberry jam.

mrs patmore: toast connoisseur; she has to be the one to crisp the bread and will not eat it otherwise. butter and preserves are the way to go. in a modern context she is a marmite lover; not a huge fan of crusts though

thomas: eats it plain with absolutely nothing on it. will put parsley butter if available though (but it never is so the mystery of whether thomas actually puts condiments on his toast remains very much intact). avid marmalade hater.

o'brien: would be gluten-free in a modern context. does not enjoy toast. don't even think about giving her some she will bite your hand off

william: he likes english muffins. if forced to eat toast he nibbles at it until it vaguely resembles an English muffin.

gwen: cuts the crusts off her bread and gets the most bombastic side eye from mrs p. liker of marmalade and heckler of daisy's anti-marmalade stance

anna: does not toast her bread and likes a thin layer of jam, so long as it doesn't overpower that taste that makes bread, well, bread. likes scones more but isn't excessively picky about it. will occasionally pop scrambled eggs onto her toast, and gets mr bates into it.

mr bates: toasts his bread, and puts butter and jam in even quantities. apparently he is a liker of marmalade, but this was only said in response to thomas' denouncement of it at the table. does he actually enjoy it? we'll never know. crust enjoyed. as mentioned above he puts scrambled eggs on his toast every once in a while.

daisy: very particular about how it's done. she wants untoasted bread, lots of butter, and lots of jam, but not too much of either condiment or it'll make her sick. she despises marmalade and would actually cry as a child if someone forced her to eat it. always eats her crusts, and will eat toast as a midnight snack. she's clearly a fan.

ivy: no crusts, no toasting, no butter, and just puts jam. fights with daisy sometimes about their stances on how toast is supposed to be enjoyed. eventually caves and starts toasting it.

alfred: did not inherit his aunt's genes and is a huge fan of bread. he will literally talk to you for hours about baking bread and how much butter is too much butter. will literally not shut up about toast. eats it with what he believes is the golden ratio of butter (it isn't).

jimmy: likes it a little burnt. that's it he has no other preferences

ms baxter: anna got her scrambled egg thing from her. ms baxter is the original inventor of scrambled eggs on toast actually she patented the term

mr molesley: huge toast enjoyer. initially very adamant that it should be eaten with just butter but changes his ways after ms baxter comes into his life <3

Which are the best panels in One Piece?

Chapter 23 sees the introduction of Usopp, who… wow, remember when his nose and eyes used to be this small? Huh.

Most of the action is about introducing him and endearing him to the audience by showing us his shenanigans, all his comedy cowardice, his ridiculous lying, and his trusty crew of village kids who look up to him.

But it also hints a bit at the bravery that Usopp can display, when he stands his ground and lies to the Straw Hats, despite clearly being pretty scared. It shows us that Usopp is someone who, when backed into a corner, has the guts to at least go for something, to swing for the fences in desperation. And it's a trait that will save his life many times over the next 25 years.

But the best panel, I think, doesn't even have Usopp in it. It's right near the end, with Kaya in her mansion. It is a bright, airy, mostly pure white space with barely any shadows anywhere, which suits her as a frail, "pure hearted maiden" sort of character. And then in the background there is the stark, pure black shadow of Klahadore looming behind her. It's unsettling. He looks out of place and ominous, and that, kids, is good visual foreshadowing.

In chapter 24 we get to meet the villain of this arc proper, Klahadore or spoiler alert Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, and the chapter is mostly about establishing his character, especially as a counterpoint to Usopp. Usopp is an honest man who presents himself as a liar, while Kuro is a liar presenting himself as an honest man. They make good foils for one another. This panel in particular is a great microcosm of the story - on the one side Usopp and all his friends, on the other Kuro, alone, and caught in between them Kaya, the person whose trust they're fighting over.

Speaking of, Kaya also gets a pretty good panel here, when she has her first outburst. See how Oda applies a fish eye lens, bending the window around her shouting, emphasizing it? It's just good technique. But no, the best panel is the punch. It's the first time we see the easygoing Usopp use violence, but it's also just a gorgeously dynamic shot, look at that foreshortening, and then the clever little trick of extending the line of his punch through the strap of his bag, it really emphasizes the motion, and it just looks great.

Chapter 25:

What are the best panels in One Piece?

Chapter 25 is one of those chapters that feels even darker in hindsight, opening with Kaya questioning Kuro about why he tries to isolate her from her friends, and why he keeps making her feel guilty about it. He then feeds her his fake sad backstory and turns it around that it's only because he cares about her SO MUCH, play-acting emotional anguish which gets Kaya to back off. It is the textbook dynamic of an abusive caretaker relationship.

That said it's not a chapter with any clear standout panels. Arguably it doesn't need any, it's not a bombastic chapter, nothing needs to be high impact. If I had to pick, I quite like this one where Zoro and Nami are sitting with the village kids, because of the way Zoro is sitting EXACTLY like the kids while Nami is up on the fence by contrast. It’s cute! But… y'know, although it's a bit flat, this panel of Usopp sitting on a cliff looking out over the ocean - the way his head rises just above the horizon line, that sense of how he's drawn to the sea… that's pretty good too.

Chapter 26:

What are the best panels in One Piece?

Chapter 26 opens with some awkward exposition, a classic "characters telling each other what they both already know" which is… efficient if inelegant. It gets Kuro's real motivation established quickly and sets the stakes, but it's a janky way to storytell. Oda does a visually clever little callback, repeating the exact same set of three panels for Usopp's now terrified truthtelling as when he told his prank lie and it's a bit funny because you can see Usopp's character design already changing a mere three chapters after his introduction.

It's another chapter without any strong standout panels, though, nothing that really rises above the rest. Usopp's terrified face when he realizes what Kuro is up to is good, as are his horrified reactions at Luffy's brashness, but if I had to pick… it's probably this one. It's not exceptional, but there's a subtlety of despair under the cartoony artstyle that comes through in the furrowed lines on his brows, the squeeze around the cheeks up under the eyes. If you look at it for a bit, you do feel his desperation.

Chapter 27:

In chapter 27 the action finally kicks up. Usopp's fight with the guards at Kaya's mansion is a standout little sequence, Usopp diving out of the way of a gun while loading his slingshot and firing is dynamic as hell, albeit, jesus christ, they're pulling guns on a teenager pretty casually. What are these guys, American cops?

I also quite like this panel when Usopp realizes that he has no chance to convince anyone that he's finally telling the truth. The use of the screentone to literally have a shadow pass over him sells the feeling well, along with that raised face barely holding back the pain. This moment where he's hiding his injured arm from his friends and lying to keep them out of danger is also good. But the killer panel comes at the end, with Usopp holding up his bleeding arm and declaring that they can shoot him and chase him and hurt him, but he loves the village and will fight for it. It's the moment Usopp really becomes a hero. It's the moment he becomes a Straw Hat.

Chapter 29 opens on a really strong panel, Usopp alone at the top of a hill facing down the Black Cat Pirates. It's a great dramatic opening, and a reminder that he was never ACTUALLY a coward, he just gets scared, and those aren't the same thing. This chapter has lots of fantastic action panels, like this shot of Usopp taking a blow to the head, or Nami saving Usopp and blocking that sword stroke - you can really see how overmatched she is from her posture and the way the staff is buckling.

But the best panel still goes to Usopp, clinging on to the belt of a pirate, dripping in blood and unwilling, even at the cost of his life, to let them go. He cuts, in this posture, both quite a pathetic but also a profoundly heroic figure. These are the sorts of moments that define the Straw Hats as heroes, and Usopp will have them more than once on the adventure.

Chapter 30:

Which are the best panels in One Piece?

Well, let's not mess about, in chapter 30 it is ABSOLUTELY the Gum Gum Gatling Gun. The sense of scale, the converging action, the way Oda hatches speedlines into the geometry of each hand to give it weight and momentum, while still making sure every line follows the action, it's just so good. The pirates who are the targets are tiny pinpricks against the overwhelming force of Luffy’s assault, one glance and you KNOW the kind of power he’s unleashing.

There are other good panels, like the follow-up where the entire panel is a chaos of sound effects and crashing bodies, all framing Luffy as the stable center, the literal last man standing. And the panel when the pirates get hypnotized and spring back to life has a lot of charm too - one of Oda's less talked about skills is how good he is at drawing a lively panel full of characters in compelling poses.

But yeah, no, it's Gum Gum Gatling Gun, god DAMN this panel is good. What a way to introduce a special move!

Chapter 31:

Which are the best panels in One Piece?

Chapter 31 sees Kaya finally discovering Captain Kuro's villainy, and one of the quite good panels in the chapter is the discovery of Merry's bloodied body: the body itself is in the foreground, rendered in rock-solid flat black, while the entire background is scratched and indistinct, drawing our eye to the shocking sight we're meant to focus on.

But I think the best panel is a quieter thing. One of the key traits of Kaya is that she's sickly, she's frail and vulnerable - the threat she's under is the source of dramatic tension for this entire arc. She's about to exert herself a lot, trying to save the village and her friends, so this chapter spends quite a bit of time establishing just how hard that is for her, how much she struggles to do what she's about to do.

And this panel, where she's hunched over, the sweat of fever drenching her body, idly clutching the blanket around her and her hair falling all over her face… yeah. That's what it's like, being sick and feeling alone. Clammy, clenched and claustrophobic. That's the posture of that kind of misery.

Chapter 32:

Which are the best panels in One Piece?

Ooh man I don't like the Nyanban Brothers. They're on the F-list of Oda's character designs, and their fight with Zoro just isn't very interesting. In fact the whole chapter is kind of mid when it comes to the art, if I'm honest. The Meowban's character designs don't lend themselves very well to dynamism, and some of these compositions really feel rather rushed. Which maybe they were! Working for Shonen Jump is a pretty relentless gig.

Regardless, it does mean the chapter is light on banger panels. Zoro's slash through Siam here gives him a gorgeous action posture, and the brothers do get ONE good, dynamic action panel when they smack Zoro to the ground here, but eeeh.

No, I think the best panel is more of a technical accomplishment. It's this one, of Zoro shouting angrily at Usopp for trying to interfere. It's shown from below Zoro's body, hunched over on the ground, using him to frame the people he's shouting at in the background, which is a genuinely INCREDIBLY clever way to show both his posture and the desperation of his situation, show visually who he's shouting at, AND communicate the geography of how far they are from each other, which is going to matter when Nami runs for his swords later. It's just very good use of composition.

Coldplay - Moon Music

When Coldplay released their latest album, Moon Music, vocalist Chris Martin said that they were going to release 12 albums and then retire. Moon Music is album 10, so people have a couple more albums to wait, but a lot of music fans will probably rejoice when one of rock’s least liked bands calls it a day. Well, least liked now, because Coldplay used to be huge, at least from 2000 to 2010, but since 2011’s Mylo Xyloto, they’ve taken a dive. I reviewed their last album, 2021’s Music Of The Spheres, and I didn’t like that album very much. It wasn’t outright awful, but it was too bland, uninspired, and boring. They went for a huge pop sound that had themes of coming together, unity, and things like that, which was good for the time, but they didn’t do anything with those themes, and it just felt like it was a little pretentious, or at least halfbaked.

When Coldplay is good, they’re really good, especially some of their early records, but I did enjoy 2019’s Everyday Life, where they went into some eclectic directions. Music Of The Spheres was a generic pop album that tried to bite off way too much than it could chew, so I was skeptical for whatever they did next. Moon Music worried me from its first couple of singles, because they were more or less what we’ve had before, but in context of the whole album, they work quite well. This album returns Coldplay to their late 00s run with some huge, anthemic, and over the top songs, but they continue with the ambient sounds they attempted to interweave into their sound with Music Of The Spheres.

At 44 minutes, one could argue that Moon Music is a little too long, but there are only a couple of longer songs that show up at the beginning, middle, and end. Despite the few issues this album has, which I’ll talk about later, I happen to really enjoy this thing. Moon Music is the best Coldplay album since Mylo Xyloto, even though that album doesn’t have a great reputation, either. The bombast is here, and on songs like “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” “Jupiter,” and,” “iAMM,” and “Good Feelings” are really catchy, fun, and huge sounding. The title track, “One Love,” and “🌈” (I hate to type that out, but we’re at a time in history where emojis can be song titles) are longer and more ambient. The latter is a very ambient cut that’s interspliced with a speech from the late Maya Angelou, and it sounds great, despite going on a little too long in spots.

The album has its peaks and valleys, but the valleys aren’t bad, they’re just not as high energy and let the album breathe a bit. Some of the album ends up running a bit too long for its own good, but the highs are worth it, honestly. Chris Martin sounds great, and even his lyrics are a bit better here, although still being extremely cheesy in a lot of spots, too. The difference here, however, is that it’s the right amount of cheese, and you really feel what he’s saying and how he’s saying it. There’s also less of a fake positive exterior that the band exudes sometimes, too, and the lyrics are still hopeful, but there is a hint of darkness there. It’s an interesting touch, compared to their overly positive stuff.

In terms of their body of work, the jury’s still out on whether or not this matches up with their other material, because I’ve seen a lot of mixed reactions on the album. Some have been positive, but the rest have been middling, versus outright bad. This is a step up compared to Music Of The Spheres, and it’s the most I’ve enjoyed a Coldplay album in years, at least out of what I’ve actively listened to. I’m curious to see how fans are reacting to it, but as someone that’s a casual fan, I really like this. I don’t know if it’s an album of the year contender, but even then, I’ve been coming back to this thing quite a lot, warts and all.

Hello! Mom anon here! After playing through Chapter 6, my mom is terrified for Yuu's well-being.

First off, she was scared for life and crying her eyes out when Grim, Vil and Jamil were taken away. She especially felt bad for Kalim and Trey throughout the chapter. She also got deeply concerned because Ramshackle was destroyed.

As each boy was taken away, my mother got more scared and was pissed at Idia. She did understand he didn't want to do this though. She also refused to believe Ortho could do any harm.

When Crowley got taken away, she legit didn't even feel bad for him.

When the boys were being taken away, she thought Leona letting Riddle nap on his lap was kinda cute. She was shook at the reveal that Idia was from a famous family. "Still a capitalist I see" was what she said about Azul.

She was crying about Deuce and Ace. Crewel is now her favorite teacher.

She found it sweet that Epel and Rook wanted to save Vil but pitied Yuu.

She thought the whole gaming part was hilarious as well as her favorite.

Now Rook is her second favorite character.

She was crying for Ortho and Grim the whole chapter.

She felt really bad for Malleus because it reminded her of when she was a teenager. Let's just say my mom used to think she didn't need friends bit it all changed when she started warming up to people.

She was so proud of Epel for getting his unique magic.

Vil kissing Epel, Rook and Yuu was so sweet.

She thought the team ups were interesting especially Jamil and Leona.

Lol she thought the monsters were a fuss.

The Shroud brothers' backstory made her BAWL her eyes out but she was also angrily wondering where the parents were.

She felt bad for Vil turning old and was happy to see him get his young self back.

White haired Riddle is her new favorite thing.

The reunion was sweet to her, especially with ADeuce, Grim and Yuu.

She now calls Malleus "Our Lord and Savior, MalMal"

She's happy that Ramshackle got fixed.

Mama legit bursted into tears of joy when she saw Ortho again. "OH MY GOD!! He's a part of the first years! I'm so happy!"

Overall, she's glad that everything's fine for now.

Now she's worried for Malleus and all of Diasomnia. The trailer for Chapter 7 made her shout "Don't you dare try to put everyone to sleep, Tsunotaro!!"

Crowley is still on her hit list 😂.

Hello again and welcome back!

While I do enjoy chatting about TWST 😅 I ask that you try to cut down on the size of your asks for the future; this one and the episode 5 one have been particularly bulky. I understand that this is likely a function of the main story getting progressively longer, but please try to do your best to summarize the most relevant points.

Making each line is a new point doesn’t leave me with a lot that is meaningful to comment on, so parts of my response may be short or skip over some sections altogether 💦

Thank you for understanding! 🙏 I’m going to spoiler tag this response since 6 is just starting to be released for EN and I don’t want to spoil anyone that wants to go in blind.

I think episode 6 definitely has one of the most bombastic starts of all the main story episodes, and it manages to maintain that momentum for quite a bit. No one was quite expecting the mass raid and kidnapping 😂 we were just joking around about Vil kicking down the door and dragging Idia away from his video games kicking and screaming. 6 is when we get a lot of payoff for all of the OBs that have already transpired earlier in the plot, so the fear really kicks in. It also gives an opportunity for the non-OB boys to step up and do something in the absence of key members of their respective dorms (ie maintain order and keep the mob students from panicking).

There was an initial outcry when the first part of episode 6 released, with the rage being directed at Idia. A lot of people believed that he was the one responsible for the kidnappings and that he would subject the OB boys to unspeakable horrors as test subjects 😔 but it later turns out he’s an unwilling participant (his parents ordered him to), and the experiments mainly consist of simulated battles and playing video games. The test subjects also torment Idia as much as he torments them sooo I guess it’s even?? I just wish people hadn’t jumped to conclusions or had been so reactionary. I understand feeling worried for the safety of the characters, but some of the things being said at the time definitely weren’t warranted and went too far 💦

Something that episode 6 does well is demonstrating the bonds that have been built between the various characters in the core cast. There’s determination in Ace and Deuce rushing in to protect their friends, Pomefiore and Yuu going out of their way to rescue Vil and Grim, the strength of the vices (+ Kalim) and the NRC staff staying behind to keep the school together, and the various OB boys teaming up to venture into S.T.Y.X.’s headquarters. Everyone bands together and tries working things out in their own ways. Yeah, they hit a few (okay, a LOT of) bumps in the road, but they’re able to pull it off in the end. 6 definitely gave me a lot of food for thought, especially on the OB boys and how they have changed since their initial appearances. (I wrote this analysis of the various groupings!) I’m looking forward to rereading the localization of 6 in EN just to experience the magic again 😤

dbjssbkwns It’s good to know that Rook’s getting some appreciation 😂 He’s really the one driving this whole rescue mission with his unique magic/signature spell, so he deserves the praise!

I was in the same boat as Rook, Epel, and Yuu when Vil asked if he could hug and kiss them! I was shocked that he could be so affectionate bfjsbsksns and even funnier, that means Vil’s the first of the TWST cast to canonically kiss the player (most likely on the cheek). The TWST OC/TWSTsona community likes to romantically ship their own Yuus with various boys in the cast (and a lot of us initially got into TWST thinking it was a dating sim), so Vil giving a kiss of thanks is kind of a funny (but probably unintentional) subversion of that.

First it was Deuce in 5, then it’s Epel getting his unique magic/signature spell in 6! (I’m hoping this means Ace discovers his in 7 😭) I really liked that Rook served as a mentor figure to Epel and helped to guide him in stilling his nerves and directing his newly discovered magic! He’s like a proud parent…

Episode 6 is notorious for its time-gating snd restrictive battles (which were not seen in previous episodes). This can be very frustrating so 💦 I hope the EN players are prepared to deal with it! Some of the battles are super tough and will require a diverse card pool to achieve victory. Luckily though, some time can be saved because the JP players have already figured out and posted the answers to some of the puzzles online.

I think the Shroud brothers’ backstory was the only one of the OB boys that made me cry 🥲 It was just so emotionally resonant in a way that the others weren’t. (I also wrote an analysis about Idia, Ortho, and coping with loss, if you’re interested in that!) I believe the commonly accepted theory is that the Shroud parents are absent or hands-off when it comes to child rearing; there’s subtle hints of it throughout 6, such as Idia saying his parents care more about getting results than their son’s feelings and how it is the researchers that check on Idia a few years after Ortho’s passing rather than the Shroud parents.

Vil turning old in his selfless effort to save Idia was a clever way to incorporate the “hag” form of the Evil Queen for whom he is twisted from. It also helps his character arc come full circle 🥺 when he repeats the same words Rook spoke to him at the end of episode 5… “In this moment, I am the fairest of them all”, while looking old and decrepit… It shows that Vil has come to truly love himself in spite of how others may perceive him.

The reunion of everyone at the end was one of the best parts of 6 (though let’s be fair, 6 had a LOT of really bangin’ parts), especially considering that this is happening so close to “the end”. You come to see and appreciate just how far you—and, by extension—all of these characters have come, the genuine friendships they’ve formed… and how that’s all going to go away very, VERY soon (due to Lilia and Malleus’s ominous conversation about the brevity of human life, and how the bonds they form make them stronger). You just KNOW the next episode will tackle mortality, loneliness, and losing the ones you love most (particularly because Yuu finding a way home will become relevant again). It makes 6’s ending super bittersweet.

Ramshackle gets fixed and we get to enjoy that luxury for all of 5 seconds before heading home—

I was so pumped seeing Ortho finally being realized as his own person and a student independent of Idia 😭 He’s the robot that was able to turn into a “real boy”, against all odds. He was able to take that 0.01% and turn that slim possibility into 100%. Ortho has definitely earned his spot at school and in all of our hearts!!

I didn’t really care what happened to Crowley when I was actually playing 6, but now I want 7 to explain what he was up to during that time 🤔 Like, we never know what he was being asked about or if he was actually being interviewed at all??? I just think it’s suspicious that we’re being left in the dark about those details.

On a final note, let’s talk Malleus! I think his general struggle is something many people can relate to. Loneliness is something we’ve all experienced one way or another. Even if we’re surrounded by tons and tons of people, we can still feel isolated and alone because there’s a component of loneliness that comes from doubt, and self-imposed circumstances. In Malleus’s case, he’s so used to loneliness that it has become his status quo, and this isolation is not only perpetuated by others but also unknowingly by himself in the little ways he acts—the arrogance, the standoffishness, etc. It can even difficult to be the one to reach out, because it involves a degree of being vulnerable yourself, of letting others “see” you as you are, rather than as the front you put up for the sake of saving grace or upholding a particular image. No main couples (Bingqiu, Wangxian, or Hualian)

Preliminary polls may occur to decide whether or not to include other significant characters like Feng Xin, Mu Qing, or Liu Qingge. Minor but popular characters like Six Balls will be allowed.

Shang Qinghua / Airplane

Submission (2): He's a sidekick and he's so sidelined that despite creating the universe he's treated as an afterthought - doubly a side character! But also? So relateable. He would absolutely have been on tumblr in his first life, he gets so excited about his blorbo who treats him terribly (until they finally get a happy ending in the extras - also! he has to wait for the extras to get his happy ending! very side-character of him). He holds the fascinating position of being mostly irrelevant to the story and yet without him the themes would totally fail. He deserves a win on something for once, okay?

Sha Hualing

Submission: Her cringefail losergirl swag has captivated me 

Mu Qingfang 

Submission: Ppl tend to completely forget he has a mad scientist side (see Jinlan arc) and if he gets into the tournament I'll have a reason to bring it up.

Daoist nuns triplets 

Submission: Authors of "Song of BingQiu" and the true culprits behind the ass wine extra. Stop crediting Liu Mingyan with their hard work! 

Mobei-jun

Submission: He's a demon tsundere who doesn't realize his human boyfriend is scared and easily squishable. Got demoted from king to cabinet minister during a hostile takeover but is pretty chill about it. Huge boobs.

Six Balls

Submission: When he was born he weighed as much as six balls. Current ball number unknown.

Helen of Troy*

Submission: uhm she isn't a Side character ? but she is referenced heavily by the main character and the subtext. This is integral to the plot of SVSSS because the subtext is where it's actually at. If all you do is read the book you will have several misconceptions of the plot. Anyway Shen Yuan!Shen Qingqiu is a metaphorical Helen of Troy within the story AND HE FUCKING SAYS THIS HIMSELF INSUSJSKS

Submission: Her glow-up in the SVSSS timeline is real! Instead of becoming Luo Binghe's childhood sweetheart, she roasts him for referring to her too familiarly. Love this for her.

Submission: He is such a Good Person who didn't deserve his fate :(

Qin Wanyue

Submission: Scum Villain's wettest and most pathetic loser! Of course, she's so pathetic that she's constantly overshadowed by more bombastically pathetic characters, but I think she deserves her chance at recognition.

Propaganda: She's so smart. She tricked so many people into thinking she was blind for so long. Also, she was really kind and considerate. Like she didn't have to save all of those people from Xue Yang. Oh and she's an excellent judge of character and super brave. Really hope she wins, she's such a fun little genius girl

Su Minshan / Su She

Propaganda: Idk I just kinda like him

Submission 2: Look at him having his own life and grudges and friendships and priorities completely unrelated to the main characters! He was so right to curse Jin Zixun 

Wen Ning 

Submission: This poor guy dealt with so much shit in life, only to be killed, resurrected, and forced to deal with Wuxian's bullshit for years on end

Jiang Cheng

Submission 1: Extremely traumatized yet also somehow the most normal and functional by the end. Huge bitch but I (and at least one of the other characters) think he deserves to be even worse after everything he's been through

Submission 2: Simultaneously badass and the most cringefail man. Extremely funny and stylish but still manages to be very uncool. Cries a lot. Also he's lost a lot of tumblr polls—let's give him another shot! We definitely love him more than his dad did!

Submission 3: He's got mommy issues AND daddy issues. He loves his sister and his shige so much. He's traumatised and incredibly competent. He rebuilt his whole sect! He's an asshole (affectionate). He's purple! He's got the coolest weapon ever conceived. I'm so worried about his blood pressure basically all the time. 

Wen Qing

Submission 1: Doctor, mad scientist, war criminal, protective big sister... she has the range!!

Submission 2: Wen Qing my beloved!! She did surgery on a grape. Mad genius for real. Also a loving sister with a very sharp tongue and maybe no sense of how far is too far. Can't wait for them to find her alive in a Koi Tower basement!

Submission 3: Justice for my girl!!!! 

Submission 4: She's bitchy and pragmatic and cares deeply and did an unprecedented operation (experimental and nonconsensual!), what's not to love? Also she deserved better.

Jin Ling

Submission 1: He may be a brat, but he has a good heart and a friendly dog. He thinks he's the main character of a much less intense story which keeps almost getting him killed 

Submission 2: Bestest boy in the whole world. He's got a dog! A helicopter uncle! His dad's sword! Yeah he can be a little brat but he's SIXTEEN okay (or thirteen, or whatever, MXTX HELP) and he's got an incredible capacity for forgiveness. He's so good!
