Blu-ray DRM is really devilish. I use a program called makemkv to rip them, because there is no other way to play them on my laptop, and there are no legit linux options for blu-ray playback, you have to crack the drm to play them. The easiest solution is makemkv to rip the movies into files, it works out of the box.

But if the level of drm (aacs) on a particular blu-ray is higher than what Makemkv can handle, the disk will update the firmware on your drive to revoke access to makemkv, so it can't access any blu-rays.

"One famous “feature” of AACS is a so-called host revocation. It was designed to ensure that only “approved” software can use your drive. Every Blu-ray disc contains a file that has a list of host keys known to be used by "unauthorized" software. This list has a version number. The moment you insert the disc into your drive, the drive checks if the list is newer than the one it knows about, and if it is, the drive re-flashes itself (updates firmware)."

And that happened to me. It was a blu-ray of the 1972 Hammer horror movie Fear in the Night that did it. The one program that works with my blu-ray player now couldn't access any discs, including ones it had ripped before. And there are absolutely zero linux programs that are authorized to playback blu-ray discs.

I had to flash my drive's firmware to allow something called libredrive, which allows direct access to files and bypasses the aacs drm firmware.

And that was quite the journey. I had makemkv installed as a flatpak via my distro's software manager. and I needed to use the command line. Flatpaks are a great packaging format. but they are primarily for gui apps. So i had to build makemkv from source. And then I had to figure out the commandline for the firmware flashing tool included with makemkv, which was hard because the instructions linked flat out lie. There is no "flash" command for sdftools, there is only "rawflash", you have to read the thread carefully to find that out. This page helped. I had to download new patched libredrive firmware.

And finally i figured out the command I needed ""sdftool -d [drive name] rawflash main,enc -i [new firmware file name].bin. And now I can use my blu-ray drive again. It's now libredrive.

So much work to finally be able to use the drive I paid for, and the blu-ray discs I also paid for. I'm not running some major piracy operation, I just want to be able to watch movies I legally own on my laptop. And drm stopped me, and I had to break it.

This is why DRM is so bad, and anyone who uses it deserves all the piracy they are trying to stop with it. It's scummy to take someone's money and then interfere with their ability to use the copy of the products they own and paid for. It's such atrocious treatment of the customer that anyone who does it deserves to have their stuff pirated.

Akira is actually so correct when he draws a parallel between Right and Taiya's imagination/creativity. Throughout the series we've seen a lot of instances in which Taiya is creative. He built/designed the BoonBoomgers' systems/suits, customized his vehicle in extravagant ways, plays the guitar, sings, and more. Even with just the BoonBoomger gear he used a lot of the power of imagination to be able to be a person who could run to people who scream and protect them, while also keeping a theme. It’s just like the real thing, James Guo, the founder of Our Erotic Journey, assures me from his office in Irvine, California. Best of all—everything is controlled through the app AMZ.

“It connects to someone that’s oceans away,” he says of its potential for creating all kinds of sexual fantasies. Teasingly, he adds: “There’s also music that can match the intensity of the vibration.”

True Sensation is just one offering featured among the wide inventory of Our Erotic Journey, the sex toy brand Guo launched in 2019. Its online store, which boasts more than 200 products, is a pleasure chest of sexual self-amusement. Take your pick: There’s the lipstick-shaped vibrator, a remote-controlled rotating butt plug, various cock rings, something called the “Gravity Rocket” (a clitoral suction vibrator with seven massage modes), and a smattering of glow-in-the-dark accessories. “Those are for the ravers,” Guo jokes.

The sex tech market is estimated to triple by 2030, exceeding $100 billion globally in sales. The demand for products, from AI-assisted companions and personal wand massagers to sexual wellness apps, sits at an all-time high. At a moment when industry trends favor artificial intelligence and remote sex exploration, Guo just wants to make eccentric, high-quality vibrators. He’s betting big on toys.

In the years since launch, Guo has built Our Erotic Journey into a quietly influential brand through intentionally whimsical designs and an insistence on quality products. “I know production,” Guo says. His family, he tells me, owns an auto-parts factory in China, and what he learned from the business—how the factory system runs, the science of machines, what style of packaging attracts customers—he leveraged for OEJ.

Guo admits that the initial product line—about 20 toys, of which the Sec Duo vibrator for couples remains a company best-seller—was devised to “fit the market.” “We self developed the first batch through modding, R&D, scaling, all that stuff,” he says. “Everything since that represents more of who we are.”

That’s how OEJ’s six themed collections came to be. The Cristal collection is for glass toys while the Space, Thrillz, and Lit collections are for truly uninhibited pleasure seekers (one features a dildo called “The Girthquake,” that exploits a specific, if sometimes worn out, racial fantasy).

But where Guo, who is 35, sometimes falls short in imagination, he more than makes up for in vigilance. “Users expect and deserve products that meet stringent safety standards, and any deviation can damage a brand’s reputation irrevocably,” he posted in an XBIZ editorial in September. “Partner with trusted white-label manufacturers rather than gamble on the unknowns.”

When I ask Guo about the editorial, he stresses that the success of sex tech is determined as much by the innovation involved in the products as the quality. “We want to be more of a bridge from human to human,” Guo says, “not just from toy to human.”

Even with promising market projections—another estimate goes so far as to predict sales could surpass $121 billion by 2030—industry analysts are not convinced that the future of sex tech is in toys.

It’s a “very oversaturated market that is now avoided by many,” says Olena Petrosyuk, a partner at the consulting firm Waveup. This year, she adds, investors “are looking away from ‘commoditized’ trends”—sex toys, but also sex content and social platforms. “Many failed to prove the economics and scale. The category is still fairly stigmatized,” she says. “OnlyFans being a massive exception.”

So what do consumers want? Petrosyuk says wellness, AI, and immersive realities are hot right now. “Practically every new sex tech startup is thinking in terms of AI use cases,” she says. “If it’s AI toys—companies are looking into how they can anticipate and respond to the user’s needs. If it’s robotics—we see companies looking into sex bots. If it’s content—it’s hyperpersonalized sex personas.”

Guo tells me he is not phased by talk of AI sex robots—“a low-volume business,” in his estimation—because many people cannot afford the high price tag. Continued success, he believes, is will come by expanding on the company’s themed collections. OEJ works directly with US and Canadian distributors; it is not a direct-to-consumer business, though he says customers do occasionally order via the online store.

Although ecommerce is the industry standard in retail and electronics, taking more of an old-school approach works for Guo. Next year, OEJ plans to launch a Zodiac collection, crafting 12 unique toys for each astrological sign. It’s an appeal to the Co–Star fanatics of Gen Z. “Every generation is different,” he says.

The company’s mostly nonexistent social media presence only seems to add to their Wonka-like mystery. “We’re just bad at it,” Jerry Chen, an operations assistant, says. “We’re really focused on production.”

For now, that business model seems to be a hit. Our Erotic Journey recently won the “Best Pleasure Product Manufacturer—Small” prize at the 2023–2024 AVN Awards in Las Vegas, a litmus test for newbie brands in the adult content world. OEJ also received the O Award for Outstanding New Product for “Sexy Pot,” Guo’s marijuana-leaf-shaped vibrator, a customer favorite.

Clearly wanting to capitalize on its unexpected success, Guo says, “It’s time we gave it a sister or brother.”

After some fine-tuning, I’ve finally landed on a color scheme for my Kaiju-themed game, #kaijuHexicutioner. While I have access to #HexKit and an array of tiles and tools, my iPad is my go-to these days, so installation is off the table. 1 - Kaiju Hexicutioner - for Roll Up Jam on itch.io. A simple flavor rich hex crawl with a bunch of dailed in d66 tables for worldbuilding

2. - Unnamed Kaiju and Yokai Game – This hybrid journaling and tactical combat game draws inspiration from the battle boards seen in RUNE and *Magnagothica: Maleghast.* It features a unique mechanic of yokai collecting through physical cards, where players can collect, kill, buy, sell, trade, or even set yokai free. With a nod to *Shin Megami Tensei*, player characters can also acquire yokai (and potentially Kami) powers.

The story follows a young boy or girl who forms an unexpected bond with a kaiju in a post-apocalyptic world inspired by medieval Japan. Set on a small island once decimated by ancient Kaiju wars, the landscape bears the scars of battles between colossal kaiju and mecha. Over time, the survivors rebuilt, forming small settlements and a single large city, each with its own unique culture, customs, and religion. After years of peace and restoration, the island’s fragile tranquility is shattered when a notorious and powerful kaiju reappears, laying waste to the capital city and plunging the island into collective mourning over the shared tragedy.

Embark on a journey across the land, where you'll explore diverse landscapes and capture monsters and yokai, with opportunities to harness their power for yourself. Salvage materials to craft and trade, and interact with various factions and influential figures, gaining insights into their communities. Most villages and settlements exude a peaceful, cozy atmosphere reminiscent of *Animal Crossing*, *Stardew Valley*, and *Zelda*. However, be prepared to encounter numerous evil, cursed, tainted, and haunted locations along the way.

I’ll probably tie them together with similar themes and design.

More dye adventures with Zonda Journey, Zephyr Slip alt deco

Okay, this is going to be a bit text heavy and process oriented, and there's no snazzy new design to show off, just sharing my process a bit as it develops. 

April wanted her copy of Zephyr Slip in custom colors, so following Transformers redeco tradition, Zephyr now has a sister, Zonda Journey. (The Zonda is a wind from the mountains in Argentina, though far to the west of the locale where Austroraptor was discovered.)

The build was a mixed success but a learning experience in my pursuit of a dying process that results in uniform, predictable, and durable color. 

Aside from a more stable kickstand, Zonda's design didn't change much from Zephyr's. For ease of dying and painting, the scooter floor, wing insets, and nasal / maxilla area were all separate pieces this time and glued into place with two-part epoxy, but not much else has changed in the model.

The build does differ from Zephyr Slip in that several of Zonda's joints use clear polyurethane rods in place of ABS ones, most importantly in the feet and tail. These have to be threaded into place and cut, but they're compliant, so while posing is a little spongy, they support more weight with more stability and absorb some shock, making the figure less likely to tip over from bumping the shelf. 

But back to the dyes. Details like the inside of Zonda's headlights and taillights, and her claw emblem, pinstripes, face details, and rims are painted, and as usual she has paper decals for her eyes and console. But the bulk of her color, everything magenta, purple, or black, is dyed. I'm going to work through those in reverse order here, black, purple, magenta. 

Some of the black parts were printed in stock black resin, like the wheels, but I've had difficulty with failed prints using it, and elements like the black sections of the tail and head where I've used white resin and dyed it black end up with a uniform, more satin finish, so I think that I'm going to prefer that method from now on.

Using black ink for brushed-in details like the shoe treads works, but it's risky, because the ink can sometimes find the grain of the printed surface and wick away where I don't want it. Anywhere I intend to do this on future models will require a deep trench in the model to capture the ink, similar to the grooves used for Zonda's pinstriping seen on the part above. 

Zonda's darker purple elements could have been more uniform with a couple more tries. Brushing the ink on with any color but black leaves a patchy, cloudy surface, and dying in a bath requires far too much ink.  Workbenchmaniac suggested using an airbrush to apply the ink, and that seems to work very well, with a lot less waste than a bath and much more uniform results than brushing, so with a bit more practice, that might be my go-to method for dying parts, especially with a layer of clearcoat on top as here.

Zonda's magenta parts were simply printed in color, but I ran into a novel problem right away that I didn't solve at all: she was never intended to be magenta in the first place. The dyed liquid resin was lavender. 

I already knew from working on Nova that dying liquid resin would really only work for pastel colors, and that the color after curing wouldn't quite match the liquid form. Nova's pink was also a little less punchy and fluorescent after printing. But I wasn't prepared for the wild swing around the color wheel this dye underwent with printing and curing. 

I've read that alcohol dyes are ironically susceptible to UV photodegradation, but I'm not convinced that's what's at work here. In fact, all of Zonda's headlights and taillights have clear UV resin poured in and cured in place after painting, which means that areas of both the magenta and the surface-dyed purple have been exposed to much longer UV blasting with no visible effect. 

So I've learned some things from this process. I think the most reliable tools in my kit in relation to dye are brushed black dye and airbrushed everything else. Airbrushing gives me bright and predictable colors, and with practice I can make them pretty uniform. Black dye, which is always uniform and can go over any other color, is a handy tool for detailing as long as the model is prepared with grooves to control the spread. And breaking elements down into parts that can be dyed separately continues to be a reliable and useful step that saves much more workbench time than it takes in Blender time.

As for Zonda Journey, I have a lot of things to improve on for next time, but I'm reasonably happy with the result for now, and April is happy with her, which is what counts.

Immersion is taken to new depths when the original soundtrack is brought into the mix, with cinematic tracks, metal music, and ambient soundscapes made specifically to score the campaign.

Set on a near-future Earth, this project offers a fresh take on Cthulhu by imagining the horror occurring in our world with the technology of the year 2034. Players will journey across the world, attempting a rescue mission unlike any other, trying to circumvent the abominations in their way, as the reality of their world unravels before their eyes.

Based on an original D12 ruleset (designed by Adam Baffoni, creator of the Tether RPG) with an emphasis on travel and survival, characters (and players) will have to work together to survive against not only the horrifying otherworldly creatures, but also the harsh environments of the Earth... and beyond.

The game features a custom soundtrack, with songs composed specifically for scenes in the main campaign of the book. Facilitators will be able to scan QR codes present in the book to play original songs composed specifically to highlight cinematic moments from the campaign.

Encounters are adventures that happen concurrently with the main campaign of Cthulhu Dreamt, but elsewhere in the world. They serve as one-shots for your group, complete with pre-written characters who have their own goals and motivations to immerse yourself in. We’ve created two especially for the Kickstarter.

Springfield Nocturne: This encounter is a perfect entry point into the world of Cthulhu Dreamt. It’s a two-shot set in a mid-western city undergoing a mysterious state of emergency, where players will need to get to the bottom of why Salien-Welf have begun evacuating citizens—if they can survive long enough to find out.

R’lyehian March: Wanna know what the team of EDGe troopers went through when Cthulhu finally awoke? Then this encounter is for you. Set on the island of R’lyeh before the events of the main campaign, this action-packed prequel story includes a party of pre-written EDGe Trooper characters working for Salien-Welf and dealing with the events that kick-off the main campaign.

Basics

Cthulhu Dreamt is built on a unique D12-based system originally designed by Adam Baffoni. Cthulhu Dreamt’s focus is primarily on travel and survival, where the players are more at odds with the world itself than with any wizards or dragons. Players roll against a target number (TN) to accomplish tasks; if they fail to meet that TN, they have the option to spend their attribute points like a resource (provided they can justify it narratively). For example, if a player wants to smash open a door and they don’t roll high enough, they can spend some Strong points to REALLY put their back into it. Players will need to be careful not to overspend these point pools, because once they’ve depleted them, they won’t be able to modify any of their rolls until they refresh the points by resting for the night.

Journeying

The Journey mechanic in Cthulhu Dreamt allows for players to cross great distances actively, rather than passively. Instead of happening in the blink of an eye, travel involves players selecting roles and narrating what they’ll do during their journey, assembling shelter, foraging for food, and overcoming obstacles cooperatively along the way. Travel also presents perfect road trip style roleplay opportunities for the players to grow closer and discuss the chaos of the world once it’s been upturned by Cthulhu’s awakening.

Combat

Combat in Cthulhu Dreamt is taken in rounds, with the players and NPCs alternating their actions back and forth—but that’s where similarities between Cthulhu Dreamt and other conventional TTRPGs end. Rather than enemies having health bars that players wail on over and over until it's depleted, Cthulhu Dreamt’s combat plays out more like a puzzle (that’s trying to kill you). Enemies still have a physical limit, but they can be defeated in a number of ways, and enemies are typically designed with unique facets that make each encounter feel fresh, keeping the players on their toes. Some creatures can be subdued through traditional means, but most will require the players to get creative and think outside of the box to defeat them.

Facilitating

Cthulhu Dreamt uses a system where the Facilitator can roll dice infrequently, instead focusing their attention on building creative outcomes for player characters, running a believable and engaging narrative world, and creating a more in-depth and welcoming experience for everyone at the table. Additionally, thanks to the incorporated soundtrack, Facilitators are equipped to build immersive scenes with music and ambient soundscapes during gameplay.

The Cthulhu Dreamt game book also includes several one-shot scenarios with pregenerated characters, fully written out and ready to play. These one-shot scenarios give Facilitators the ability to still run a Cthulhu Dreamt game night, even if a player cancels last minute.

There are many unique aspects to the version of Earth found within Cthulhu Dreamt: Unique characters which you’ll interact with, and horrific abominations which you’ll face off against. Cthulhu’s presence on Earth has had far-reaching effects, and they’re felt in every corner of the world… and every corner of your mind.

NPCs - From brilliant, planet-altering scientists, to people caught in the wake of these changes, NPC’s like Sheena, Simon, and Alya bring a knowledge of the world, and drive the players to achieve things that might feel impossible.

EDGe Troopers - The EDGe Troopers are the private military owned, operated, and outfitted by the world’s biggest biotech conglomerate, Salien-Welf. Trained in both military and ritualistic combat tactics, the troopers sometimes feel like the only thing holding the line between us and the all-consuming maw of the unknowable. But sometimes, holding that line puts them between the players and their goals, so the troopers are just as likely to be friends as they are foes.

TRACEs - When another plane of existence aligns with Earth, weird and dangerous things happen, and life as we know it can change. Not only will we see new plantlife, and other landscape features that weren’t there before, but we’ll soon find out that we are no longer the only life in this universe.
