Development Update - December 2024

Happy New Year, everyone! We're so excited to be able to start off 2025 with our biggest news yet: we have a planned closed beta launch window of Q1 2026 for Mythaura!

2024 Year in Review

Creative

This year, the creative team worked on adding new features, introducing imaginative designs, and refining lore/worldbuilding to enrich the overall experience.

New Beasts and Expressions: All 9 beast expression bases completed for both young and adult with finalized specials for Dragons, Unicorns, Griffins, Hippogriffs, and Ryu.

Mutations, Supers and Specials: Introduced the Celestial mutation as well as new Specials Banding & Merle, and the Super Prismatic.

New Artist: Welcomed Sourdeer to the creative team.

Collaboration and Sponsorship: Sponsored several new companions from our Ko-Fi sponsors—Amaru, Inkminks, Somnowl, Torchlight Python, Belligerent Capygora, and the Fruit-Footeded Gecko.

New Colors: Revealed two eye-catching colors, Canyon (a contest winner) and Porphyry (a surprise bonus), giving players even more variety for their Beasts.

Classes and Gear: Unveiled distinct classes, each with its own themed equipment and companions, to provide deeper roleplay and strategic depth.

This year, the development team worked diligently on refining and expanding the codebase to support new features, enhance performance, and improve gameplay experiences. A total 429,000 lines of code changed across both the backend and frontend, reflecting:

New Features: Implementation of systems like skill trees, inventory management, community forums, elite enemies, npc & quest systems, and advanced customization options for Beasts.

Optimizations and Refactoring: Significant cleanup and streamlining of backend systems, such as game state management, passive effects, damage algorithms, and map data structures, ensuring better performance and maintainability.

Map Builder: a tool that allows us to build bespoke maps

Regular updates to ensure compatibility with modern tools and frameworks.

It’s worth noting that line changes alone don’t capture the complexity of programming work. For example:

A single line of efficient code can replace multiple lines of legacy logic.

Optimizing backend systems often involves removing redundant or outdated code without adding new functionality.

Things like added dependencies can add many lines of code without adding much bespoke functionality.

We’re thrilled to share some news about Mythaura’s development! Starting in 2025, Miya will be officially dedicating herself full-time to Mythaura. Her focus will be on bringing even more depth and wonder to the world of Mythaura through content creation, worldbuilding, and building up the brand. It’s a huge step forward, and we’re so excited for the impact her passion and creativity will have on the project!

In addition, I’ve secured 4-day weeks and will be working full-time each Friday to dive deeper into development. This extra push is going to allow us to keep moving steadily forward on both the art and code fronts, and with Miya’s expanded role, the next year of development is looking really promising.

New Expressions: Ryu

The Water-element Ryu has had expressions completed for both the adult and young models. Expressions have been a huge, time-intensive project for the art team to undertake, but the result is always worth it!

Mythauran Astrology: January

The month of January is referred to as Hearth's Embrace, representing the fireplaces kept lit for the entirety of the coldest month of the year. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Glassblower and the carnelian stone.

Mythaura v0.35

Refactored "Beast Parties" into "User Parties," allowing non-beast entities like NPCs to be added to your party. NPCs added to your party will follow you in the overworld, cannot be made your leader, and will make their own decisions in combat.

Checkpoint floor functionality ironed out, allowing pre-built maps to appear at specific floor intervals.

The ability to set spawn and end coordinates in the map builder was added to allow staff to build checkpoint floors.

Various cleanups and refactors to improve performance and reduce the number of queries needed to run certain operations.

Added location events, which power interactable objects in the overworld, such as a lootable chest or a pickable bush.

Blu-ray DRM is really devilish. I use a program called makemkv to rip them, because there is no other way to play them on my laptop, and there are no legit linux options for blu-ray playback, you have to crack the drm to play them. The easiest solution is makemkv to rip the movies into files, it works out of the box.

But if the level of drm (aacs) on a particular blu-ray is higher than what Makemkv can handle, the disk will update the firmware on your drive to revoke access to makemkv, so it can't access any blu-rays.

"One famous “feature” of AACS is a so-called host revocation. It was designed to ensure that only “approved” software can use your drive. Every Blu-ray disc contains a file that has a list of host keys known to be used by "unauthorized" software. This list has a version number. The moment you insert the disc into your drive, the drive checks if the list is newer than the one it knows about, and if it is, the drive re-flashes itself (updates firmware)."

And that happened to me. It was a blu-ray of the 1972 Hammer horror movie Fear in the Night that did it. The one program that works with my blu-ray player now couldn't access any discs, including ones it had ripped before. And there are absolutely zero linux programs that are authorized to playback blu-ray discs.

I had to flash my drive's firmware to allow something called libredrive, which allows direct access to files and bypasses the aacs drm firmware.

And that was quite the journey. I had makemkv installed as a flatpak via my distro's software manager. and I needed to use the command line. Flatpaks are a great packaging format. but they are primarily for gui apps. So i had to build makemkv from source. And then I had to figure out the commandline for the firmware flashing tool included with makemkv, which was hard because the instructions linked flat out lie. There is no "flash" command for sdftools, there is only "rawflash", you have to read the thread carefully to find that out. This page helped. I had to download new patched libredrive firmware.

And finally i figured out the command I needed ""sdftool -d [drive name] rawflash main,enc -i [new firmware file name].bin. And now I can use my blu-ray drive again. It's now libredrive.

So much work to finally be able to use the drive I paid for, and the blu-ray discs I also paid for. I'm not running some major piracy operation, I just want to be able to watch movies I legally own on my laptop. And drm stopped me, and I had to break it.

This is why DRM is so bad, and anyone who uses it deserves all the piracy they are trying to stop with it. It's scummy to take someone's money and then interfere with their ability to use the copy of the products they own and paid for. It's such atrocious treatment of the customer that anyone who does it deserves to have their stuff pirated.

Akira is actually so correct when he draws a parallel between Right and Taiya's imagination/creativity. Throughout the series we've seen a lot of instances in which Taiya is creative. He built/designed the BoonBoomgers' systems/suits, customized his vehicle in extravagant ways, plays the guitar, sings, and more. Even with just the BoonBoomger gear he used a lot of the power of imagination to be able to be a person who could run to people who scream and protect them, while also keeping a theme. He of course does this with Bundorio's help, but that does not diminish his own creativity and his individual power of imagination. We also see he uses imagination in his attacks, and this is something the other BoonBoomgers tend to do as well, which makes it all the more fitting for ToQger to pop in. That's all to say that I think that Taiya has a lot of vision, and imagination is another tool that has been helping him on he journey of adjusting and discovering what life he wants to live with his friends.

New Lore Notes For Riot:

• In the beginning of her journey, Riot travels across Sornieth with Varg, chasing Lesser Falls to keep her leg and tail charged. When they come across a place of latent magic, Riot spends a considerable time dwelling there to stock up on vials. (More often than not, it is an ugly and boring process of hacking up local fauna and plants with her Cleaver... until more befitting tools are crafted..)

• As a result of constantly needing to upkeep her prosthetics, Riot becomes familiar with Artificing. Riot's desire to learn the inner mechanisms of imbuing items with magic was a natural conclusion. She invents a design for her leg that is far more cost efficient when utilizing the magic she's harvested -- and much like Pig and his Cleaver, Riot's augmentations go through many iterations.

• That isn't to say Riot doesn't tinker with her own Cleaver's design. Through idle studying, and various enlightening trips through the Ashfall Waste and the Shifting Expanse, Riot creates other Harvesting weapons, too -- which are expertly used in the hands of her Needlers and Breakers within the Hunting Corpse. When the designs are perfected (or an otherwise acceptable level of craftsmanship,) Riot willingly shares these inventions with her family.

• Riot's travels across Sornieth give her many opportunities to run into her family -- if she's privy to the knowledge on where to find them. Arguably the most sentimental of the nest, Riot doesn't let her Search or her Hunting get in the way of visiting her siblings when the opportunity presents itself.

• Riot is aware of who her charge is just as early as her recognizing that she has the calling -- it was a matter of figuring out where the Plaguemother wanted her to be.

• The intuitive pull carried her around Sornieth, pushing her into more and more challenging circumstances and fights. And her travels enlighten her to the worldly insights of other clans and their customs. The opportunities to adapt and overcome were not lost on Riot -- she recognized the lessons that the Plaguebringer eased her into, or abruptly dropped her in.

• Deeper spiritual wisdom leads Riot ever closer to the understanding of balance between the Eleven. It becomes most apparent when conversing with Water dragons -- their concern and waning magic regarding their absent Father was enough to sympathize with. There was no feeling of conquest or opportunity in the Tidelord's absence. Indeed, The Sea of A Thousand Currents was a territory bordered by the most flights, yet the Tidelord's domain remained. The worry that rang in his worshipers' words felt like a resonant bell that answered back His Sister's sentiments. "Where did he go? Why is he gone? What is he searching for? What did he See?"

• In a longer eventuality, The Hunting Corpse settles in the Rotting Woods. Their base of operations. While Riot still participates in Collapses, her older years grant her the privilege of finding where the Plaguemother wished for her to settle... and to aide in the struggles happening beneath the Wasteland.

More dye adventures with Zonda Journey, Zephyr Slip alt deco

Okay, this is going to be a bit text heavy and process oriented, and there's no snazzy new design to show off, just sharing my process a bit as it develops. 

April wanted her copy of Zephyr Slip in custom colors, so following Transformers redeco tradition, Zephyr now has a sister, Zonda Journey. (The Zonda is a wind from the mountains in Argentina, though far to the west of the locale where Austroraptor was discovered.)

The build was a mixed success but a learning experience in my pursuit of a dying process that results in uniform, predictable, and durable color. 

Aside from a more stable kickstand, Zonda's design didn't change much from Zephyr's. For ease of dying and painting, the scooter floor, wing insets, and nasal / maxilla area were all separate pieces this time and glued into place with two-part epoxy, but not much else has changed in the model.

The build does differ from Zephyr Slip in that several of Zonda's joints use clear polyurethane rods in place of ABS ones, most importantly in the feet and tail. These have to be threaded into place and cut, but they're compliant, so while posing is a little spongy, they support more weight with more stability and absorb some shock, making the figure less likely to tip over from bumping the shelf. 

But back to the dyes. Details like the inside of Zonda's headlights and taillights, and her claw emblem, pinstripes, face details, and rims are painted, and as usual she has paper decals for her eyes and console. But the bulk of her color, everything magenta, purple, or black, is dyed. I'm going to work through those in reverse order here, black, purple, magenta. 

Some of the black parts were printed in stock black resin, like the wheels, but I've had difficulty with failed prints using it, and elements like the black sections of the tail and head where I've used white resin and dyed it black end up with a uniform, more satin finish, so I think that I'm going to prefer that method from now on.

Using black ink for brushed-in details like the shoe treads works, but it's risky, because the ink can sometimes find the grain of the printed surface and wick away where I don't want it. Anywhere I intend to do this on future models will require a deep trench in the model to capture the ink, similar to the grooves used for Zonda's pinstriping seen on the part above. 

Zonda's darker purple elements could have been more uniform with a couple more tries. Brushing the ink on with any color but black leaves a patchy, cloudy surface, and dying in a bath requires far too much ink.  Workbenchmaniac suggested using an airbrush to apply the ink, and that seems to work very well, with a lot less waste than a bath and much more uniform results than brushing, so with a bit more practice, that might be my go-to method for dying parts, especially with a layer of clearcoat on top as here.

Zonda's magenta parts were simply printed in color, but I ran into a novel problem right away that I didn't solve at all: she was never intended to be magenta in the first place. The dyed liquid resin was lavender. 

I already knew from working on Nova that dying liquid resin would really only work for pastel colors, and that the color after curing wouldn't quite match the liquid form. Nova's pink was also a little less punchy and fluorescent after printing. But I wasn't prepared for the wild swing around the color wheel this dye underwent with printing and curing. 

I've read that alcohol dyes are ironically susceptible to UV photodegradation, but I'm not convinced that's what's at work here. In fact, all of Zonda's headlights and taillights have clear UV resin poured in and cured in place after painting, which means that areas of both the magenta and the surface-dyed purple have been exposed to much longer UV blasting with no visible effect. 

So I've learned some things from this process. I think the most reliable tools in my kit in relation to dye are brushed black dye and airbrushed everything else. Airbrushing gives me bright and predictable colors, and with practice I can make them pretty uniform. Black dye, which is always uniform and can go over any other color, is a handy tool for detailing as long as the model is prepared with grooves to control the spread. And breaking elements down into parts that can be dyed separately continues to be a reliable and useful step that saves much more workbench time than it takes in Blender time.

As for Zonda Journey, I have a lot of things to improve on for next time, but I'm reasonably happy with the result for now, and April is happy with her, which is what counts.

After some fine-tuning, I’ve finally landed on a color scheme for my Kaiju-themed game, #kaijuHexicutioner. While I have access to #HexKit and an array of tiles and tools, my iPad is my go-to these days, so installation is off the table. Instead, I embraced the budget-friendly route with my free Canva account. To piece it all together, the “Hex Kit Tile Snapping Template” from ATellingEllipsis on itch.io has been an absolute game-changer for laying down tiles in that perfect hex style.

I’ll probably keep all the art/layout/design in this scheme. What do you guys think?

1 - Kaiju Hexicutioner - for Roll Up Jam on itch.io. A simple flavor rich hex crawl with a bunch of dailed in d66 tables for worldbuilding

2. - Unnamed Kaiju and Yokai Game – This hybrid journaling and tactical combat game draws inspiration from the battle boards seen in RUNE and *Magnagothica: Maleghast.* It features a unique mechanic of yokai collecting through physical cards, where players can collect, kill, buy, sell, trade, or even set yokai free. With a nod to *Shin Megami Tensei*, player characters can also acquire yokai (and potentially Kami) powers.

The story follows a young boy or girl who forms an unexpected bond with a kaiju in a post-apocalyptic world inspired by medieval Japan. Set on a small island once decimated by ancient Kaiju wars, the landscape bears the scars of battles between colossal kaiju and mecha. Over time, the survivors rebuilt, forming small settlements and a single large city, each with its own unique culture, customs, and religion. After years of peace and restoration, the island’s fragile tranquility is shattered when a notorious and powerful kaiju reappears, laying waste to the capital city and plunging the island into collective mourning over the shared tragedy.

Embark on a journey across the land, where you'll explore diverse landscapes and capture monsters and yokai, with opportunities to harness their power for yourself. Salvage materials to craft and trade, and interact with various factions and influential figures, gaining insights into their communities. Most villages and settlements exude a peaceful, cozy atmosphere reminiscent of *Animal Crossing*, *Stardew Valley*, and *Zelda*. However, be prepared to encounter numerous evil, cursed, tainted, and haunted locations along the way.
