An Icewing x Nightwing animus formerly of the ice kingdom, he only remains undetected (as an animus or a hybrid) because of the animus-touched glasses he created for himself that let him pass, unquestioned, as an Icewing. They also allow him to see animus-touched objects. They are also enchanted to be unbreakable and can only be removed voluntarily. They also protect his mouth and throat from heat and cold. He can breathe fire or frost, but he'd rather keep this a secret. The final enchantment layered into this single accessory is a protection from extreme ambient temperatures (hot and cold alike). That's it. No invulnerability, nothing that might give him away.

He is NOT a mind-reader, but he is so observant and skilled at reading dragons (mundanely) that he is believed to be a mind-reader. His blood is blue and will not freeze.

He lacks the typical Icewing tail spines, possessing instead a serrated spear-tip at the end of his tail.

He is only loyal to Peony, a Rainwing who is similarly disillusioned with the Rain Kingdom. (A former Queen who left voluntarily upon revealing that he identified as male. The Rainwings are progressive, but the idea of a king is still too strange)

You would think that after more than 50 parts on this, I would not automatically try to type "Tales of Abyss" each time but alas here we are, and I never learn

Funny, because if you first see his plans and preparations, it looks very long-planned, detailed, carefully thought out. And then Jade Curtiss comes in with the verbal steel chair and calls it "oversimplyfied".

At Van:

Nonono see, in Van's eyes, Luke has served his purpose (destroyed Akzeriuth, so Asch didn't have to, so Asch wouldn't fulfill the prophecy and die) but here comes to kicker which neither Van nor Luke are able to see: Luke is more than that assigned purpose. He is AT LEAST as strong as Asch - or has the potential to be - not to mention he can grow from here on out, and is free of the Score, and Van is not even paying ATTENTION to him. He should, though. He should pay very close attention, cuz in the end, it does look like Van has created his own worst enemy. He has doubled Lorelei's scion, created someone who is not in the Score and thus not predictable, and he doesn't even realize it. Van's an idiot. Period.

Can I just butt in here to say - both Luke and Natalia have been burned badly, getting betrayed and / or rejected by people they trusted, loved, looked up to (Van, King Ingobert). All of that very recently. If anyone here had a reason to be distrustful, it would be them but they are the first ones to say they trust Guy still. That's not naivete, that's strength of heart.

felt like making a quick reference sheet for what real world technology existed around the time of the narrative to better understand exactly when this is taking place and what non-canon historical events i can safely take from for writing

first is weapons and military, which i strongly reference this post for. the original italian carcano bolt action rifle is in use by both militaries. reiner has one when he returns to marley, but the new scouts also have the 1938 carcano carbine. i'd have to check to see if isayama was consistent with illustrating these pre- and post-contact, it doesn't really make sense for walldians to have 1891 rifle technology that presumably came from marley when that's only 41 years before the 1938 model. though bolt action rifles did exist and were first adopted by an army in 1841, they didn't become standard issue until the late 19th century. gewehr 98s are also in use by marley, which was like the name indicates another late 19th century bolt action rifle.

other weapons marley uses are PTRD-41 anti-tank rifles which the narrative calls anti-titan rifles (gabi uses one of these all the time after the raid of shiganshina), and apparently even some semi-automatic rifles like the M1 or M2 carbine which were 1942 and 1944 respectively. so the latest gun technology we see is from 1944.

it's safe to say walldians absolutely did not have semi-auto capabilities, actually hansi mentions this very thing about the mauser C96 which is from 1896:

"Ah... I see Like this [it] must [be capable of] shooting many/multiple [shots]..."

which the first semi automatic weapon was designed in 1885, so i suppose the king retreated behind the walls prior to this time.

marley also apparently only has up to pre-dreadnought era ships, so prior to 1906. but it's said that their navy is outdated and underdeveloped, so this is implying we are past the dreadnought age, which fits the timeline with the firearm capabilities we see.

the flying boat that kiyomi talks about being the worlds' first is a twin engine biplane. it reminds me of the airco DH.10 which was designed in 1918. there's also a similar looking flying boat, the curtiss NC-4 designed in 1919, but that one has four engines. the first flying boat was 1912, which is a lot further behind than their firearm technology.

other than that is civilian technology. for example in grisha's childhood in 817 there were motor powered automobiles

which looks similar to the ford quadricycle, designed in 1896 but never mass produced. mass production only began with the model T in 1908. 817 was 33 years before the main events of the narrative, which would put us around 1929 in 850 technology.

and this car that hansi gets excited about does seem like the ford model T, which had long been in mass production at that point (though had also already been replaced by the model A in 1927).

so it seems like overall the latest technology in 854 is 1930s to 1940s, though strangely nobody really seems to dress like people did around that time. everyone's clothing is far too simple, no accessories other than bowler hats. personally i think that's no fun so i write contemporary western fashions that were popular in the 1930s like these.

another fascinating thing to me is hansi's glasses, prescription glasses in frames like these didn't really exist prior to the 1920s, especially not in the early to mid 19th century, and even then no real tests for assessing eye strength existed so people would choose their own from premade options. but by the 1930s glasses were seen as another fashion accessory, so far more people should have been wearing them.
