Hustling Across Illinois This is a westbound Amtrak National Limited in Altamont, Illinois. We know we’re on the former Pennsy due to the distinctive signal. That's an EMD F40PH on the point of the train, which means the legacy cars here have been retrofitted for HEP.
As I understand it, F O R D stands for "fix or repair daily". One image by Richard Koenig; taken in February of 1979.

Hustling Across Illinois This is a westbound Amtrak National Limited in Altamont, Illinois.
We on the Conrail line between Terre Haute, Indiana, and St. Louis (former Pennsy/Penn Central). That’s a relatively new EMD F40PH (built in December of 1977) on the point of the train, which means the legacy cars here have been retrofitted for head-end power (HEP). The red Ford pickup truck completes the snowy Midwestern scene.
The National Limited would be discontinued on October 1st later that same year. One image by Richard Koenig; taken in February of 1979.

A Meet and a Pass
We’re along the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon. A northbound freight is in the hole at Thornton Siding for an Amtrak Floridian moving in each direction. The tiny burg of Peerless is here at the north end of the siding; all of this lies between Bedford and Bloomington, Indiana.
About the black unit, an Alco C420: obviously it’s in former SCL paint, but shows on the L&N roster as theirs. It was built for the Seaboard Air Line in 1965; this is at or near the time of the so-called Family Lines being formed.

Florida Bound
This is a southbound Amtrak Floridian rolling down the former Monon at a spot called Ketchams, between Bloomington and Bedford, in southern Indiana. The line was owned by the Louisville & Nashville at the time.
The train is powered by two SDP40Fs, running elephant style as the train would be split in two once in Florida—the two terminals being Miami and St. Petersburg. I’m pretty sure this train always had at least one dome car in the consist.
Someone on FB tells me the Southern Pacific box baggage cars (at the rear of the train here), were leased by Amtrak for a Chicago to Jacksonville mail contract.

Meet at Thornton
I believe we have a northbound Amtrak Floridian on the main here, Louisville & Nashville, former Monon.
Don’t know how long the siding is, but I imagine the southbound freight may have had to saw through the siding. The Passenger train will soon by rolling through the tiny burg of Peerless. I now realize that I must have climbed up the semaphore at the north end of the siding for this angle.
