Not sure what to say about the co-opting of Robert's iconic line... and then not even giving him a mention
I love Aaron but the Robert erasure made me sad :/

I'm curious to see how Iain chooses to 'fix' Emmerdale. He definitely had his faults, but when compared to what they've had the last 3+ years this is not terrible news. He did know how to build a story, I didn't always like the story, and the ending didn't always land, but he knew how to build one.
He also knew you don't make C characters the focal point of the show. Something these producers do all the time.
It definitely won't be easy to undo all their bullshit, but I'm curious to see what he axes story wise.
Also he did love to use Robert/Ryan so.........

Be Mine Superstar / Emmerdale / Taikan Yoho
selections from my week in media [8-14 october 2023]
[anticipating]
Elseworlds (DC) - DC is bringing back the Elseworlds line next year, one of my favorite things ever.
System Collapse by Martha Wells - the newest Murderbot Diaries book (another full-length novel) comes out in November
[listening]
"Buppha" / Worawit Kiyapate
"On My Own" / The People's Thieves
"With UNIVERSE" / Pentagon
[loving]
Yoh finally learned to make good curry and we all cooed.
[reading]
The Mysteries by Bill Watterson and John Kascht - Watterson returns to publishing with a fable
They'll Talk About Us by finalizer - Red White and Royal Blue fluff
[watching]
Be Mine Superstar - Finished up the last four episodes just to get it off my list and was pleasantly surprised how good the ending was.
Beyond Evil - Rewatching because it's amazing and fits this time of year (Happiness is also on that list).
Emmerdale - Rewatched the beginning of Aaron and Robert's storyline in 2015. Robert really was the worst back then (did Aaron ever find out about the assassin Robert hired??). Aaron was so in love so fast and sick over it. My favorite tag, "the angst it is delicious" sums them up so well.
My Journey To You - Still slowly working my way through the last episodes and am currently paused on episode 19's fantastically horrifying revelation.
Ranking Every Adaption of The Thing / coldcrashpictures video essay - With a few exceptions, I can't deal with horror (I don't like being frightened and cannot handle a lot of jump scares or gory visuals). I'm a movie fan though, and there's a lot of really interesting stuff in the genre that I like to learn about. It's even better when the writer clearly loves the work they're discussing, like this essay. It's about an hour and well worth a watch/listen.
Taikan Yoho (My Personal Weatherman) - The last episode was everything I was hoping for. Communication, some sexy times, and more communication. Yoh and Segasaki are joining the ranks of couples that I wish we could see more of as their relationship develops and matures over time. I love them.
Bonus: a short list of books from my TBR if you're looking for something to read (Goodreads links provided)
Thornhedge by T Kingfisher - novella, horror, fairy tale
Starter Villain by John Scalzi - novella, first person pov, humor, cat on the cover
Forged By Magic by Jenna Wolfhart - novel, fantasy, cozy, romance
City of Bones by Martha Wells - novel, fantasy, sc-fi, dystopia
The Water Outlaws by S.L. Huang - tome, historical, fantasy, queer

At this rate I'm just waiting for the Casualty/Emmerdale crossover episode where it is revealed Robert got off innocent as they found oddities in his case and evidence for Luke killing his brother instead. Before he was released though he got cocky with other inmates and they battered his head in leaving him with a brain injury causing him to lose his memory. He came back round in the hospital thinking he worked there. Siobhan is friends with Lee and Luke's mother (I've completely forgotten her name but who can blame me) hence why she's pissed. Plus, Barney Walsh had relations with Robert before he met Aaron (like Daniel from corrie) which is why Robert remembers him.
Sneak peek - scene 2…
Man’s Best Friend - 03-Aug-2024
#why else is he playing the SAME character#different name but same story#it may not be cannon but this is how I'm choosing to perceive it#it takes my frustration away from current emmerdale a little bit#ryan hawley#jamie cleveland#bbc casualty#robert sugden#emmerdale

Heads up, it's another long one !
I just remembered that I had saved this twitter conversation from a while ago, it's from a woman that manages several uk soap stars (Claire K etc), and they were discussing soap returns with her, and how long it can take to iron them out. Two small excerpts of what she said:
Apparently she manages an actress that is about to return to one of the soaps after like a decade, and it's been planned for a long while now, with magazine covers having been shot months ago etc. But still no news is actually out yet about who it is and when. And she's saying it's fairly common for it to take a year from a decision being made to bring someone back until they are on screen.
Anyway, as always I'm thinking of Ryan, and Robert returning lol. They called Danny at the start of 2023 and had him filming by august and appearing by october. Aaron was obviously fairly easy to write back in the show, since he had literally just driven away. But for maximum drama, they waited for SSW.
As for Ryan, when he and Danny had their pub meeting in 2023 he would probably have been gearing up to film ACGAS. We have no idea when he later secured Casualty and Miss Scarlet after that. But we do know now that he most likely started filming Casualty around December and that Miss Scarlet only wrapped their filming of season 5 in April this year. Then he was likely doing ADR for it after that, based on the picture he posted.
Would Emmerdale/ITV even try to secure a deal with an actor who is currently working elsewhere I wonder? Danny talked about trying to talk him 'round in his return interviews in October. But Danny isn't the same as Emmerdale's production team, which by the way has changed a lot since early 2023.
First Jane was there when Danny got the call, then she left, so when Danny was saying those things about trying to convince Ryan, a lot of changes was going on bts. Then Iain came in as head boss, then Kate left, most recently they appointed Sophie... They could all feel different about what direction to take.
Add to it that the Robert character is possibly more complicated to write back in than Aaron, with the prison sentence to consider, and also where they wanted to go with other characters. Would they want to finish something else first, would it clash with another story etc. Another thing is obviously they would want a super dramatic return for Robert, not a random thursday in, say, August. If Aaron got SSW for his return, I would expect nothing less for Robert. (There's always Christmas too!)
I guess this is my very long winded way of saying that I still don't think it's too late for a return, and I think the prospect of a love rivalry with a new half brother sounds a lot more promising from a story telling stand point than 'let's just tell Robert's return story with his brother instead'... They did say adding this particular new Sugden to the show would open for a bunch of new story possibilities down the road. Like what, if not Robert coming back?
But, then again, maybe they just lost patience in waiting for Ryan, and I'm being delusional again, lol.

Spoilers Emmerdale star Danny Miller has confirmed that his character Aaron Dingle will be sharing scenes with the show's new Sugden.
Show bosses recently announced the casting of former Coronation Street actor Oliver Farnworth as newcomer John Sugden, who'll be joining the village later in the summer.
John is a new arrival who'll be shaking up life for Victoria, who's the only remaining Sugden family member still left in the village.
He has also been tipped to "catch the eye of an unsuspecting resident", creating plenty of drama in the Dales.
Speaking to Digital Spy on the red carpet at the Radio Times Soap Awards, Danny teased: "There's a Sugden coming in. With the history that Aaron has with Robert, it'll be interesting to see what happens with them. "It's going to be an interesting few months, which is great."
Off screen, Ryan Hawley – who played Aaron's husband Robert – recently made the switch to BBC One's Casualty. He's currently playing the role of Jamie Cleveland in the long-running medical drama.
Asked about Ryan's new job, Danny joked: "Traitor! He's a great actor and I speak to him all the time.
"Hopefully he does a good job – I'm sure he will, with everything else he's done. I'm excited for him."
Oliver Farnworth was recently pictured filming alongside Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle) for some dramatic Emmerdale fire scenes, which will air in a few weeks' time.
John Sugden will be involved in the high-stakes rescue scenes when Moira Dingle and Ruby Fox-Miligan get trapped in a burning barn.

I haven't been watching current Emmerdale because I hate what they've done with the show. If they bring Rob back of course I'll start watching again though because he's my favorite character of all time. Still can't believe they brought Ross back of all people before Rob. 😒 Don't forget that Mike Parr hates Robron so you know don't forget to mention them on all of the social media talking about him. I'm sure he'd love that. 😝
Mostly the point of this post is to say
REBECCA WHITE IS FINALLY GONE
From the time Rebecca arrived in Emmerdale she haunted Robron's storyline including even when she left the village because she was still causing them to fight about Seb. Hopefully now when Rob comes back (because I do believe he will) they can have a life and storylines that aren't connected to her.
Oh and just a reminder so people don't forget she totally took advantage of Rob when he was drunk and vulnerable and the show never took it seriously because he's a queer man and she's a woman. The amount of crap I got back in the day for speaking out against this character was nuts yet if Rob had taken advantage of Rebecca people would have lost their minds over it. I'll forever hate her because of how she treated both Robert and Aaron.

What if Robert bought into the bnb. Maybe he got compensation for wrongful imprisonment. He could force Bob out, involving some kind of convoluted revenge on Wendy, and then be partners with Nicola and Jimmy, putting the band back together - yay.
And then he'd deal with angry Aaron, d**king sessions in the guest rooms until he mellows.

After that ask yesterday I've been trying to think how I would even attempt to fix Emmerdale.
I really just want to lock all of the producers and storyliners and decision making creatives into one room and ask them a lot questions.
I'd want to go through each and every character and be like "tell me this character's job (cause some don't have any), tell me what this character's hopes and dreams are, career ambitions, tell me what their purpose is in the village, tell me about their family, their romantic relationships/prospects and why they actually like/love those people, tell me about their friendships and the last time they had any meaningful interaction with those friends (cause most don't have any or don't talk to them if they do)" and if they don't have answers to some of those questions, we'd sit there and figure some out. I want everyone to have a prospective friend or at least address why they don't have one and what that says about their character.
I'd want to go through all of the businesses in the village and figure out which ones are actually worthwhile and how many are just blatantly ignored. I'd want them to give me story ideas to incorporate all of those businesses. I'd want them to explain to me why the HOP exists and why the Woolpack no longer feels like the heart of the village.
I'd want to force them to go through every terrible story from the past 5-7 years and tell me what impact they had on the show so they can see how 90% of them were pretty pointless in the end.
I'd want to challenge them to find me one character introduced in the last 5-7 years that didn't have a convoluted backstory that connected them to a current character or two. And ask them why that's their only means of brining in a new character.
I'd want to ask them what they think the public perception of each character is and whether that matches up with what they've theoretically been trying to do with them.
The biggest problem with the show is that they don't care about the characters anymore, or the village as a character. They're just chasing big headlines and things that get people talking for a moment. And yes, part of what goes into that is the way the world has shifted and our attention spans are garbage and part of the reason people respond to the older episodes is due to nostalgia, but it's also because there was a level of care with the characters that's not present on the show now. The reason those big hyped up events of the past worked better than they do now is because there weren't as many, but also because we cared about the characters affected by them. And they had longer lasting impact on village life. Now everything feels meaningless because you don't care about the characters or whether they live or die and these events happen every other week and there's zero lasting impact moving forward.
So I'd want to lock them all in a room and make them care about and understand their characters again and if there's any that are falling by the wayside, maybe they're not needed anymore.
And then from that basic level of care and understanding, I'd want to challenge people to build stories out of that. Stories that matter to the characters and therefor to the viewers. Maybe if they cared about the characters they were writing for, they'd want them to succeed every now and then and they could find the occasional positive story to tell.
I don't know. It just feels like without that level of caring about the characters, there's no hope for the show and that's why it just makes me sad these days.
Sure maybe a lot of robron things I loved happened kind of on accident but they just had so much more depth than anything happening in the last five years and I miss that. I miss caring about it and if the creators don't care, I'm sure not going to.
(and...end rant)
(wow I haven't done one of these long winded rants in a while. you should be thankful I'm not actually watching anymore or they'd still be happening frequently I'm sure)

I have to admit, as a very very longtime diehard Moira/Coira fan, I have been getting SPOILT these past weeks with Moira’s current storyline. Even despite the context.
These are some of my most favourite Cain & Moira scenes we’ve had in literal years, every episode I spend the rest of the evening just watching their scenes back because my heart is so full 🥹🥹 I’m appreciating the hell out of seeing my most favourite Scottish queen on screen as I’m still so scared emmerdale are going to take her away from me. I love moira & coira with everything I have in me I swear
#emmerdale#those scenes with Isaac tonight??? omg I was literally shedding tears#my most favourite family ever ever ever#moira barton#cain dingle#coira#isaac dingle

I'm starting to think we are meant to be perceiving John as weird and creepy and it's deliberate on Oliver's part. I watched Corrie when he was in it and his storyline although ridiculous at times was mostly well acted. He conveyed emotions fairly well and was definitely not constantly 😐 in that. I mean it's not like it was oscar worthy acting in Corrie but it was a hell of a lot better than what we are currently seeing! It's obviously not just us that think he's weird either judging by that radio times article.
I have never seen the actor in anything so I will have to take your word on the Corrie thing. I am glad we're not the only ones who seem confused by what he's supposed to be doing. Making him a bad guy would absolutely be the more interesting storyline and that's why I'm hesitant to think he's supposed to be coming off as a little creepy. It's been years since Emmerdale has shown any kind of ability, or frankly desire, to do anything remotely interesting storyline wise. I think he's probably just not a good enough actor to pull off what have been very awkwardly written scenes (nothing as bad as whatever those supposedly passionate scenes were). Overall the dialogue is just bad and I just don't think he's capable of helping it. I want to be wrong because making him bad really would be an interesting way to go and could be a really good storyline. I say could be because Emmerdale tends to let things go on for too long and then seemingly become disinterested in their own storyline, but it really would be the better way to go here for many reasons. For now I'm skeptical they'll actually do it but I would love for them to prove me wrong.

What makes me ever sadder is that judging by the current state of Emmerdale they’ll have them married by next summer. Everything is rush rush rush, no depth. Look at Nicky and Suni! We will be expected to believe Aaron loves him just because he’s a Sugden. Lazy.
Yeah Nicky and Suni were interesting at first when Nicky was angsting over the Gabby of it all... but then that disappeared and so did they. and now they're leaving together to travel the world (or something) because they love each other soooo much.
I think they'll have aaron hook up with him first (because that's how it started with Robert too) and then a few months of "it meant nothing, we're just friends" and then somewhere around december time they'll be official 🙄🙄🙄
so what will the new shipname be? Johnron? Joron? Aaron ❤ John Sugden 5-eva Robert who? robron 2.0
also what's the bet John will have a secret kid somewhere? So they can have aaron be a dad again and tell everyone how much they looove The Gays™
they could 'save' that story by having seb suddenly get dropped on Aaron's doorstep... and him having to deal with his (former) stepson and a reminder of robert while he's fucking his half brother.
