Twenty Questions for Fic Writers

How many works do you have on AO3?

I'll use my FFN stats since I'm not transferring everything from there over to AO3. Fic count on FFN is 204, though that's not including the ones I archive privately, so technically the number of fics I've posted is 253.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

Again, going on FFN word count since that's where everything is. That stands at over two million: 2,197,752.

HOWEVER, I also have a further 817,563 words of fics privately archived, so in actuality I've hit the three million mark: 3,015,315! I knew I must be climbing up there, but I had no idea that I'd surpassed it, so that made me happy!

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently, it's Downton Abbey (Anna/Bates), EastEnders (Suki/Eve), Game of Thrones (Daenerys/Jorah), Gentleman Jack (Anne/Ann), and The Incredibles (Bob/Helen).

5. Do you respond to comments?

On FFN, yes, since it's done via PM. On AO3, no. I really appreciate all comments, but I despise that it counts my response, and I won't inflate my comment count. But of course I read each one.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

One of my suuuuuper old Pokémon fics, Twisted. It's sooooo bad. Young teen Dan was dark and depressed. If I didn't think it was important to leave everything up to show progression, I'd delete it and pretend it never existed.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Nearly all of my fics have happy endings because I mostly write fluffy oneshots, so pretty much take your pick.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I did once have a comment on a Dany/Jorah fic which had nothing to do with the fic and just hated on the ship, which I rolled my eyes hard at. What is the point in seeking out something you don't like? Weirdo behaviour. And, you know, it was from a Dany/Jon stan, so...people in glass houses and all that.

9. Do you write smut?

I do. Not as often as I used to, but when the mood strikes. Most of my smut scenes/fics are archived privately, though.

10. Do you write crossovers?

No. I did extensive planning for one once, but the crossover universe was mostly just there as background. Whether I ever get around to actually writing it remains to be seen, but I wouldn't write another because I have no real interest.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Someone once asked wayyyyy back in 2012 if they could translate one of my fics, but I don't know if that ever happened. And I deleted it to archive privately, so probably not, LOL.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have not! I'm not sure if I'd be any good at it, I'd feel the pressure!

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Well, it's been over twelve years since I wrote my first Anna/Bates fic, and I still write a little bit for them most days (just a slow and steady process). I still love all of my old ships, but Anna/Bates has had the longevity to endure almost nine years after the end of the show (I don't count the movies because they're whatever), and they're still so, so special to me. <3

(Although I do spend most of my time these days completely fixated on Suki/Eve because MY GOD, that ship has completely altered my brain chemistry.)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

It's not a 'doubt I ever will' thing just yet, because I am still very much writing Anna/Bates fic, but I have one in particular that I haven't touched in six years where the final line of the penultimate chapter has lived rent-free in my head for all that time...I've just never committed it to paper yet, and I'm still a couple of chapters away from it.

But I finally finished the bonus chapter of Made of Starlight [Downton Abbey, Anna/Bates] seven years after posting the final chapter on FFN, so there's every chance I'll pick it back up in the near future.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I don't think I'm particularly good at anything, but if I had to pick something...Dialogue, maybe? I always have lots of fun with characters interacting with each other, anyway, regardless of whether it's good or not.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Description. I feel like it's often clunky and not evocative enough.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I used to write it in italicised English. Nowadays, if a character is speaking to another in a language they both understand, I'll still do this, but if it's from the POV of a character who doesn't understand it, I'll write it in the other language but try to do the HTML on AO3 where hovering over it on desktop will give the English translation. For example, this was pivotal for the fourth chapter of Vivat Crescat Floreat, since the whole point of the chapter was supposed to be Tyrion's frustration at not knowing what the hell Daenerys and Jorah were talking about. It would not have worked if the audience could read the Common Tongue right off the bat, but the hovering at least gives the audience the context that Tyrion does not have.

I don't bother on FFN since hardly anyone uses that site anymore, haha.

Of course, the only language that I do know is English, so I have to rely on translate for other languages...which, let's face it, can be horrendously inaccurate.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Pokémon. I don't keep up with the anime much these days, but I'm always there for a new game, haha.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

I don't really do favourites because I'm mostly just meh about what I've written, but I'll always have a soft spot for A Meeting of Fates, purely because it was the first multi-chaptered fic that I ever finished.

Lost in Balms [Downton Abbey, Anna/Bates, privately archived] is one I had a lot of fun with. I started it in April 2017 and completed it July 2023, but during all that time I had such a clear image of how I wanted the climax to go down. I actually wrote the fic in an entirely linear fashion, so thinking of that one scene kept me going for five years until I actually reached it, and it was one of the most satisfying things to write because of how long it had taken for me to get there.

And not a fic mention per se, but the fourth 'chapter' of And Beauty There Echoes the Speck of Our Souls [EastEnders, Suki/Eve] gave me all the feels to think about and write. I wrote it at a time where I was struggling with Suki and Eve's breakup in canon, and it brought me great comfort to focus on. And another Suki/Eve fic that I'm working on right now is giving me the same warm fuzzies because it's something I desperately want at some point in the future. <3

20 Questions for Fic Writers

Thank you @malinthebodyguard for tagging me! 💜💜 I'm not really on tumblr much at the moment for various reasons, but I can never resist a quiz.

(It's not a secret that oneofthosebells is a burner pseud I created just to write YR fic for Reasons I won't bore you with here, so the below is combined across pseuds.)

How many works do you have on Ao3?

67 (25 fics, 41 vids, 1 podfic)

What's your total Ao3 word count?

Just over 430,000

What fandoms do you write for?

I tend to be monofannish, so only Young Royals right now! My main fandom for a few years before that was Ballum (an EastEnders pairing), and I've written for various other sources over the last 20 years including several one-off fics in tiny fandoms for Yuletide.

Do you respond to comments?

Usually! I tend to be all or nothing - I try to reply to every comment, but if I'm struggling to keep up, I sometimes end up not replying to any at all for a few weeks and then it feels daft to reply after that long.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

None! I don't like angsty endings, happy endings all the way round here. Probably the only one that even vaguely counts is Say a Little Prayer, which is a missing moment from canon from a very angsty episode - but even though it ends on a sad note, if you know the show you know they get married a few days later so it's still not that angsty.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hoping that if I can get my writing brain into gear I will soon be able to give several YR fic answers to this question...!

From my non-YR fics...almost all of them? But let's say Beginner's Luck because of the light-hearted romcom vibes throughout. (Or maybe My Heart Won't Let My Feet Do Things They Should Do, because it's not just happy from a ship pov, but also has a character coming to terms with his hearing loss, taking up dance again for the first time since he was 12 AND standing up to his homophobic, ableist dad.)

Do you get hate on fics?

Not recently, doesn't seem to be much of a thing in YR fandom thank goodness! In the past...yeah. (Soap opera fandom is toxic af.)

Do you write smut?

Yep. Not very well. 😂 I put it in stories that seem to need it, but mostly I tend to go for a M rating rather than E because it's really not in my comfort zone to write the explicit stuff. Never written PWP. (I tried to, once, but it ended up full of feelings and a bit of plot anyway!)

Craziest crossover:

Never written a crossover, never really wanted to. I keep my fandoms separate lol.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Hope not! Not aware of it if so.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I'd love to. Me and a friend kicked around an idea a few times, but never came to anything.

All time favourite ship?

Eep. Please don't hate me if I don't say Wilmon! I love them to pieces, I really do, but honestly I hyperfixated on their story and the show as a whole rather than them as a couple if that makes sense (which is probably why I don't really read/write non-royal AUs).

Gun to my head, all time favourite ship: Christian/Syed from EastEnders.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

There are many YR WIPs on my hard drive, but honestly I'm still hoping to finish all of them one day! So I'll say Not Giving In, which I do really want to finish but alas canon kind of killed my love for the characters (especially Jay who plays a big part in the last few chapters), so chances are high I never will. Will be the first and probably only fic I'll ever properly abandon, which I feel gutted about. Blegh.

What are your writing strengths?

Oh god, what a horrible question. 💀 Probably dialogue? Keeping a plot moving along? And people usually seem to like my characterisation, I've had comments in previous fandoms along the lines of 'could be an actual episode of the show' (which I'm taking as a compliment rather than a dig at my unoriginality lol).

What are your writing weaknesses?

Beautiful prose. Metaphor, simile, imagery, description, all of that. None of that's in my wheelhouse at all. If I could get away with writing fics that were 95% dialogue and 5% 'shrugs, nods, stands up, sits down' stage directions I absolutely would.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

Eh, I'm not a big fan. With YR fics, I kind of take the view that if you're writing in English, you're essentially translating the entire fic from Swedish into English anyway - so why leave the odd phrase untranslated? It's distracting more than anything else. But it's not a red line or anything, I don't mind it too much in other people's fics.

First fandom you wrote in?

I won't lie: alas, Harry Potter. See above for my feelings on that now.

Favourite fic you've written?

No false modesty here, it's this one: The Picture Thou Hast Made. I wish I'd given it a better title lol as it might have got more attention, but super proud of this fic, probably my best ever attempt at balancing humour, fluff and angst. (Cough, it's an AU that's probably still enjoyable without any canon knowledge, just saying.)

Mind you, one of the YR WIPs currently lurking in my hard drive might just push it into second place... 👀

Jake: [calling her like you have something to prove and I like to think you’re outside of your house where you used to get when you were a sleepwalking child (the equivalent if you didn’t live in this house when it was occurring) giving front garden vibes as a nice contrast to the bday girl’s back where you were being feral earlier, telling her this is where you are and why when she answers]

Sylvie: [shhing him like speak quietly because you assume his sister is home and you don’t want her charging out to speak to him immediately, even if he wasn’t being loud, he’s getting told anyway lol, asking him to describe his front garden even though sorry that bit is not exciting you basically don’t have one but we wanna picture it]

Jake: [catch him lying on his back on the cold hard ground and holding his phone up like she’s in the sky and he’s stargazing in sims as he whispers the tea about this non-existent front garden, me knowing damn well his sister is waiting inside the house there like an angry mother, don’t you come out here girl, happily then tell her about the back garden and everything you grow in your veggie patch etc because the back garden is your fave place to be (when you and your sister are on good terms and out there together vibing) so you gotta adorably ramble about that how drunk peeps will]

Sylvie: [sitting at your kitchen table in the dark like you’re on an episode of EastEnders, Talia, I see it now lol, you just have the good sense to wait and not cause a scene on the street like your drunk brother who’s laying here without a care in the world lol, we love to see it, hence here barely saying a word we’re so happy listening to him, you can join in and tell him about your mini homestead situation though because you too have a veggie patch and some chickens and goats, though you’ll have to be honest and say you don’t help much because I can’t see it lol]

Jake: [mhmm, his poor worried sister is poised and ready exactly like that, iconic truly, as is how excited this boy is to hear about her fucking goats and all the rest of it, the faces he’s making as he’s listening to her talk about this and the questions he’s asking about their names and personalities like these animals are her pets like her dogs which he’d know she has 2 of, a big and a small because french convo, pets are always mentioned but I doubt she did the homestead so new info, swapping veggie patch deets too lol, he can’t even be mad or anything but heart eyes when she admits she’s not that into it because he’s too busy falling in love with her and happy to be learning more things about her life, plus it’s shamelessly more of his sister’s thing anyway like being vegan is, so he can in turn be honest and say that and explain how he got dragged into the whole vegan thing when he was a kid because she was doing it when I imagine she was the same kinda age as my boo going veggie, I’m picturing like 9/10]

Sylvie: [at least you would like the goats because how can you not, even if the garden pottering is mostly for your adorable mother, so you can tell him about them and their hijinks over the years that would undoubtedly be many and varied lol ‘you looked up to her’ because that’s fairly obvious that they are close for siblings and the beef is a new one or you wouldn’t be quite as shook by it, the pair of you, doing a little lol because he is literally looking up at you right now ‘don’t drop me’ because we have all dropped our phone on our face but it’s also a thing we want to say double entendre baby]

Jake: [it’s okay girl you don’t have to be Maggie and her mother living laughing and loving on their whole ass farm, we know it’s not your vibe, the fucking goats are funny and that’s more your energy lol, doing a big nod (because he did and he lowkey still do) that probably has you getting grass or some outdoor scut like a leaf in your hair because lying on the ground, he won’t notice but she’ll see how adorable he is, smiling at her lol and her quip cos good one babe without saying it, he’ll be here then though lowering his phone SO close to his face so it’s almost touching, the sauciest move, saying right into it like he’s whispering in her ear ‘I’ve got you’ with all the feeling]

Sylvie: [we lowkey pointed out (to Maggie, not you) that she’s more your type on paper and we won’t be bringing that up right now or again because don’t want you to think about it lol, instead just giving him and his messy hair heart eyes because what a sight, doing such a huge breath out when he puts you closer to him, like you can blow that leaf right ouf of his hair or you’ve been holding your breath since you left the party and have only just been able to breathe again ‘I’ve missed you’ as if you haven’t been talking non-stop since you were separated but you know]

Jake: [she is and I love us for being slay and doing something different go jemily, go jemily again because the vibes are immaculate as per too, bringing the phone back out to LOOK at her like you’ve suddenly realised how much you miss her and therefore need to stare at her because she said it, not saying anything just enjoying being able to hold that eye contact for a minute and let her know how mutual it is, finally saying it in french, obvs when the eye contact feels almost unbearable]

Sylvie: [soz that that would be predictable and thus very boring lbr, can you be jealous should they ever have a conversation when y’all are more official so they have reason to? Obviously but even if my boo didn’t have to write by herself, we would still not be shipping it, ANYWAY; have this staring contest with him basically because even though you been being feral, things always hit different when you are face to face and when you give yourself a second to actually think about them, hence asking how the party was after you left because you did flee the scene to leave him to deal and you care]

Jake: [soz that winola gay has spoken and he wants Harley x Maggie now (because he looks a bit like her dad lol and peeps be doing that subconsciously) even though we’ve never tried it and it might not ever work or be a thing, but Jake and her absolutely must have a convo that makes this gal jealous yes, we gotta, if not that happening more than once if we wanna do her not admitting her jealousy at first, anyway, him genuinely saying ‘I don’t remember’ in answer to how the party was because they’ve been talking non stop to the point he might as well have left when she did]

Sylvie: [win said you’re never beating the allegations sis lmao, at least he is not old enough to be nor did he ever raise you because your sister been there got that trauma in the bag, we definitely will, ‘cos it’s another reason for you to be a crabby apple and that’s kind of the vibe of how this is changing you for the time being so yeah, in the here and now shaking your head, fondly at him but unfondly at everyone else, especially China ‘don’t know how she wouldn’t notice’ like I would personally notice if you disassociated in front of my eyes but whatever queen ‘he didn’t either but he was annoyed I sent him home’ ‘cos you would’ve been abrupt about it and that undoubtedly hurt your bf’s ego]

Jake: [a shrugging sort of gesture that dislodges the leaf or whatever it was because China is a deliberately blank page herself and he’s really starting to realise that now especially because of how intensely this gal feels in contrast but we’re not trying to verbalise all that rn in a way that would probably drag her to filth because he’s tipsy and his filter is gone, and anyway it’s genuinely still mindblowing to him if true that she would do that for months and he hadn’t noticed hence ‘I don’t know how I didn’t’ coming out lowkey talking to himself more than her, can’t help being snapped out of those musings and highkey buzzing that she rejected her bf though, that’s written all over his face]

Sylvie: [even though you can tell he’s talking more to himself than you, replying regardless with your own shrug ‘who doesn’t want to believe they’ve found their soulmate?’ like you are not alone in that because riddle me this, if a boy pretended to like everything you do and agreed with everything you said we would call that love-bombing but when it’s a girl HM, me and Sylvie have some thoughts on that miss thing but it is not the time nor place to go over that again ‘optimism isn’t a crime, yet’ said jokingly like you might make it one]

Jake: [it’s tea and someone needed to say it, she emotionally manipulated her way to the top, rubbing his free hand/arm over his face because he feels like such an idiot truly, which is why I’m a cheating apologist here, worse crimes have been committed imo, a lil noise like ugh to go with it ‘I didn’t want to believe you’ because she really did tell him and he said no no ‘that feels criminal now’ peeping at her from behind the sleeve of his jacket]

Sylvie: [and we all know she’s going to switch when she’s with Bobby and turn into her nasty gal self, like you’ll get more than your fair share of revenge when that flip happens and she’s bad mouthing you about town, count your days lads lol ‘I was raining on your parade, didn’t seem selfless’ because we get why you wouldn’t want to listen, not to mention our own motives weren’t entirely wholesome because we were getting a lot of our own rage out, which you know now, smiling and nodding like yeah it is ‘criminal is you thought I left with him’ as if that’s a mad thing for him to think about you and your boyfriend, so genuinely offended lol]

Jake: [mhmm, toxic king and queen coming through, ‘I’m sorry’ genuinely for both of these things, rubbing his sleeve over his mouth like she rubbed the beer bottle when her bf, subconsciously as he thinks about them because big ew, no notes]

Sylvie: [‘you did that to me, not him’ like I would NEVER let you turn me on and then have that flop do something about it, saying it so seriously like he’s gotta know ‘don’t get cold’ mistaking the gesture for him covering his hands in his sleeve, because even if it was the height of summer right now (which, they’re in school so that’s unlikely) you can still get cold being on the ground like he still is]

Jake: [when that is basically exactly what you did do going over to China’s gaff after this gal turned you on and you wanna scream soz again but you just said it so you can’t, his face scrunching up about it, brows knitted in such a frown because you hate that you did that and you hate that you walked her home and didn’t say anything because you wish you’d just broken up with her tonight asap, blurting out finally ‘I wish we were my screen’ because what a teenage way to say you wish she was your gf instead, so unlike him though mr barely posts on socials or usually uses his phone ‘or your singing was my notification’ in case we weren’t blatant enough]

Sylvie: [‘you’ve been together [however many months because he’s definitely said it, you don’t just know off the top of your head]’ point being that they’re a real couple, however false and teenage it may be, and you just said yes to seeing this boy to distract yourself from Jake, so you can’t measure the shit in the same way which you can tell he is as he is angsting right in front of you, being stunned into silence and stopped from defending his actions to himself though when he says these things because you can’t believe it ‘see in the morning, when you’re sober’]

Jake: [‘I know’ with a sigh because he knows he’s done China dirty by cheating on her and everything even if she’s also doing him the same with her nefarious deeds, sitting up but not fully getting up to go inside yet or anything, looking up at the actual sky to see if any stars are out, like he might really wish, looking back to her to say ‘stuff won’t look different’ because so the saying goes things will in the morning but not for him, not in this instance, he said what he said]

Sylvie: [looking at him so intensely when he’s looking up at the stars that you actually do one of those little guilty jumps back when you make eye contact, like he just caught you and you aren’t allowed to look at him like that ‘starting to do things right is starting them sober, bare minimum’ like if you wanna stop doing her dirty and start doing things legit ‘I’m going to listen to more of your stuff too’ looking down because feeling vulnerable saying you’ll check out his music for real]

Jake: [‘okay, I’ll sleep on it’ genuinely because you’re taking that good advice on board but adding nevertheless ‘but you know what I’ll dream of’ cos it’s her and the AM isn’t gonna change that however guilty he feels for being a cheat, reaching out as unthinkingly as she jumps as if he can really touch her rn, being as vulnerable telling her which songs she should listen to because you don’t wanna be like DON’T listen to my loved up songs about my gf but don’t gal tbh you don’t need to put yourself through it, softly saying ‘[by saying the titles of said songs] are about my father’ like start there if you mean it]

Sylvie: [meeting his eye and sharing a meaningful LOOK before smiling down into your lap knowingly because you’ll be dreaming of him too ‘I don’t want you to change your mind, any time’ quietly because he knows that but you still HAVE to say it, leaning back in almost imperceptibly but again you MUST ‘I’ll listen to those ones first’ because you been knew the rest are basically all about China because you’d have that rep and I imagine your bandmates (past and present) lowkey joke about it/vent their frustrations]

Jake: [I’ve lost count of how many times this boy has smiled genuinely at this girl tonight but he is again after he’s returned the LOOK and she has quietly spoken, not to mention lent in a little bit, because we love to see all of it ‘if you don’t like them don’t tell me’ as if it’s bants because he clearly also has that rep of being someone who can’t take criticism especially about his music and having a lead singer ego but there’s also a genuine note to it because we know those songs about his dad are where he’s been most vulnerable on main cos complicated feelings to have about that sad situation so it’d break his heart if she hated them]

Sylvie: [‘it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, or even how it sounds’ because we would not do that to him, slightly hurt that he would think that but in the sense it’s purely because that’s how you’ve presented yourself to be and you’re like oh, chewing on your fingernail because you don’t want to say sorry but you also do]

Jake: [‘your opinion matters’ because it does to him and in general in the sense that she’s always allowed to have and express one, likewise doing a lil shift in how he’s sitting on the cold hard ground because we feel awks that we’ve accidentally kinda called her a bitch and that wasn’t our intention we just genuinely wanna share everything we can with this girl and hope she likes it]

Sylvie: [nod and do a half smile because you likewise are not trying to make this awkward or a thing and you appreciate this get out of jail free card he’s giving you, as well as obviously just genuinely meaning it ‘I will tell you’ because not trying to give China and tell him everything is amazing, no notes and no nuance either ‘think you’re gonna have to have a conversation with your sister first though’ gesturing with another nod towards his house (however much of it you can see in this position rn), screwing up your face like rather you than me because clearly your parents have not attempted an interrogation on you tonight and thank god]

Jake: [her parents are sweet nerds who are letting her live atm in a way his fam are simply not, which is good from a writing point of view to show the different sides but soz sir that this has made your sister more highkey than ever, hence going from buzzing that you know she’s gonna give you some proper feedback, saying ‘keep it real’ at her cos you know she will, to frowning cos you know she’s right and you gotta but you aren’t looking forward to it ‘I think you’re right’ as he follows her gaze with his own nod, asking her what time it is like that’s the deciding factor and your sister isn’t gonna lose it regardless]

All the feels 🤧 It's beautiful and raw how much Callum loves Ben. I don't think it makes him a doormat in the slightest. Callum said it more than once he isn't obligated to help Ben and his dad out of this mess. So it isn't that he isn't aware he is sticking his foot in, it's what he chooses. Take that as what you will, I think that's more powerful than anything really.

I think we kind of forgotten where callum started, before he met Ben. He was awkward, second guesses himself and alot of stuff he take from people. When Ben stepped into his life, it probably felt electric, like this guy who had a spark wherever he goes with eyes on him. Completely opposite to him. Their first time in the park was that intense it shook him. We see Ben poking his buttons, challenging him to speak up for himself, to think for himself. To be his true self that he never thought he could be, that brought out who he is now. All these parts of Callum that always been there of course but Ben help bring it out.

I think a great example and one of my favorite moments between them was in the garage after he found ben in the boot. That whole scene with Ben telling him 'it's his move' and the talk they had after, is perfect the impact Ben has on him. After their talk and Ben called him a coward for keeping Whitney in the dark, what does he do even though he is still scared to face who he really is? he goes and tell Whitney the truth.

There are so many times Ben reassuring him and telling Callum to be him, so many times been there for him, you understand why Ben is important to Callum. He's first person that actually saw the real him in many ways. You kind of forget with all the situations with Ben that's happened over the last few months that this is what Ben is to Callum. I felt like it did got abit lost in translation within the writing but here is Callum reminding us why it's always going to be Ben.

tl;dr

The way Callum loves Ben is endearing. Ben helped Callum love and accept himself. What Ben is to Callum cannot be replaced and I think we forgot how much of an impact Ben had on him to where he is now, so it will always be Ben.

But he is so pure and kind it took him a moment to realise Ben knew the car was stolen. Bless him

Callum towering over Ben as he slams him against the door

Look at how quickly he went from being angry at Ben to being turned on

Yes! 100% agree! I would love for them to take the time to build them together. Like, they both need to grow as individuals and work on their own issues in order for them to be able to go together. I do think that the show can do both at the same time? And I know I always make the comparison to Robert and Aaron, but that's because they're the only other couple I've ever really cared about that much, lol, but I remember so many people hating on 2017. But it was one of my most favorite times because that break up, which really was 7 months long, showcased Aaron's growth as a character, and eventually, Robert's own need to be a better person because he wanted to, which then led to them getting back together. I think EastEnders has the potential to write an even better reunion story imo and I do hope they take that opportunity.

Some Ballum stans hate that Ben needs support so much but now he's got a story that might end up with him having better ways of coping = maybe less dramatic breakdowns that Callum is 'sidelined' for, they don't want that either lol

Some people don't wanna be pleased. As they say in my family "some people love being miserable cunts."

I've said this about Eastenders a few times, both in regards to Ballum and otherwise, but they're dammed it they do and dammed if they don't. Give a character a storyline, somebody will be pissed, don't give them a story someone else is pissed, every decision made in that story is hated by someone. It's ridiculous.

I'm personally chuffed with this storyline and am looking forward to seeing where Ben goes (although I'll be honest I'm not looking forward to actually Watching it, cos I feel it's gonna hurt emotionally)

Okay, first of all, before I actually discuss tonight’s episode, I have an important announcement to make. Guy Henry has been nominated for Best Drama Star at the Inside Soap Awards. Go vote for him. Just... PLEASE go vote for him. This may be the last chance we’ll ever get to get him an award for playing Henrik (he’s never won an award for his work on Holby before, FYI), and goddamn does he deserve it after his INCREDIBLE performances in Henrik’s abuse storyline.

Okay, have you voted for Guy Henry now? Yes? Good. Now let’s talk about tonight’s Holby.

It was a pretty good episode! Probably the best one in quite a while. The Jeni stuff kind of dragged the episode down, but even that wasn’t as bad as usual. The Eli/Amelia stuff and Josh/Ange stuff was fantastic.

I am really glad they’ve had Jeni actually face justice for what she’s done. That is so, so much better than Henrik’s CSA storyline, where the message was basically “don’t speak out, nobody will believe you and you won’t even get justice”. Did they see my tweets during Henrik’s storyline where I pointed out what a terrible message it sent to have Reyhan die, and actually learn from it? Okay, maybe not my tweets specifically, but have they actually learned from their mistakes? A real shame they’re learning too late if so.

However, I still hate how they’re having Donna victim-blaming Evie. Jaye Jacobs is playing it well, but it’s just so unnecessary. What the hell are you thinking there, Holby. Why are the writers of this show even allowed to do abuse storylines when they just fuck them up like this? They should take more cues from Casualty and the brilliant Jacob/Tina storyline. (Not that Casualty always handles abuse well either... cough, we’re still expected to sympathise with Faith, cough.)

Eli just gets more autistic by the week and I love that for him. Seriously, though, it was nice to see him get some real character development tonight. The storyline with him and Amelia is really interesting. It provided some good laughs earlier on in the episode, and some really good, heartfelt material later on. Getting an inner look into Eli’s insecurities was really interesting.

A few things I’d noticed tonight - we saw Eli missing social cues and struggling with interaction throughout the whole episode, especially the earlier scenes. He seemed to nearly have a meltdown after Amelia confronted him about his burying himself in his job, when he went to the staff room to yell in frustration. He then proceeded to avoid eye contact with Josh for most of the following scene. And given Eli has already been established (it’s even mentioned on his website profile) as having low empathy, I found it lovely that they specifically had Amelia mention how kind and patient he was. We love a show that understands that lacking empathy doesn’t mean you can’t be compassionate!

Davood Ghadami played that last scene of Eli opening up to Amelia brilliantly. That came as no surprise to me - he was by far one of the best actors on EastEnders, they really wasted him there. Lucy Briggs-Owen is also fantastic as Amelia! They really felt like they could be a real couple.

The Josh stuff is interesting. It sounded from the spoilers like we were going to get a big reveal about his past, but unless I missed something, I don’t think they directly stated what? So I guess the actual reveal is coming later. But for now, it’s being heavily implied he’s struggled with mental health problems before. Explains why he was so understanding of Henrik, I suppose.

Holby, please don’t mess this up like you have with every other storyline about mental health since... well, since Sacha’s depression storyline 3 entire years ago.

Also, it’s nice to see Josh and Eli becoming friends! Watch out, Jac - after bonding with Henrik and now befriending Eli, Josh might just be on his way to steal your spot as Holby City Hospital’s resident Autism Whisperer. ;) Someone should do one of those memes where it’s like, two or more characters, with an arrow pointing towards the first character(s) and listing a trait of theirs and another arrow pointing towards the second character and calling them the “[thing] protector”. I.E. Eli and Henrik the autistics, and Josh the Autistic Protector. Lol.

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Star Trek: Voyager, I suppose at least for reading. Started writing with Stargate SG-1.

2. What is your latest fandom?

I dip in and out of lots of fandoms on and off, the most recent ‘pick up’ is Ballam from Eastenders, I don’t watch soaps, but Robron and Ballam both appear a good bit on my tumblr, so I eventually gave in to checking them out via fic and youtube – thank god for youtube, lol! I still don’t watch soaps, but I watch those storylines!

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?

Gosh, that’s... actually no that’s really easy. Primeval. For anyone not familiar, it’s a ‘silly little dinosaur show’ produced in the UK. It had 4 short seasons, with a somewhat revolving main cast – although they managed to keep 3 of them through all 4 seasons – but the fandom was/is amazing. I made life long friends through the fandom and even though I don’t write much any more I still read some and still talk with those people.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?

I would say no. I can’t say every fandom has always been amazing – ship wars anyone! – but mostly fandom has been a very positive experience in my life.

5. Which fandoms have your written fanfiction for?

Stargate SG-1: Jack/Sam, I just... no. I’ve read a few where it’s a background or secondary pairing, but it always makes me wince a bit. I’ve read a few with Sam/Daniel as a secondary pairing that didn’t make me react that way and I’ve read Sam with other characters, but Jack/Sam just is a nope for me.

Stargate Atlantis: McKay/Keller – no, just no. that was horrible. She treated him like... awfully, trying to change him to suit her, just... no.

Marvel: Contentious, but Tony/Pepper, also Peter Parker/Tony Stark. Maybe because I saw the movies before I ever looked at the comics, but meh.

Due South: Benton Fraser/Ray V – again, contentious, but honestly I think Ray V was kind of a shit friend to Fraser.

Firefly: Anything with Jayne. No really, I just can not stand the character. I spent most of the series wanting to punch him in the face and sometimes you get characters you love to hate, but I just hated him.

Buffy/Angel Verse: Buffy/Spike, Willow/Kennedy

Harry Potter: Ron/Hermione, Ron/Harry, Harry/Ginny... basically, Ron and Ginny should just be loveless hermits who live by themselves. Ok, no, that isn’t fair... but as much as Ron was Harry’s first friend, he was selfish and bitter and Ginny/Harry just... never sat right with me. Ron literally says she spent ‘all summer talking about’ Harry, when she’d met him for all of three seconds. She didn’t know him. It always felt like she fell more in love with the *idea* of Harry Potter, than Harry Potter himself.

Sherlock: Sherlock/Molly, he’d eat her for breakfast. Serious, she’d never survive him.

Primeval: Oliver Leek and anyway. Arg. Creepy little dude is creepy and evil.

NCIS: Ziva/DiNozzo – ugh, just no.

8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?

Tumblr, god damned bitches posting gifs of pretty boys falling in love, roped me in!

9. What are the best things about your current fandom?

I dabble in several fandoms at once... but if we go by ‘most recently picked up’ as ‘current’ we’re talking Ballum, which hey, it’s always fun to have an actual canon pairing be my OTP, that’s rare for me, lol.

10. ��Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

Well (so far) I haven’t written any Ballum. (I say so far, because I’m a realist, lol). I rarely read in fandoms and not end up writing in them at some point. Although I have probably dabbled in a few I’ve not written for, but if I read it with any sort of consistency, I mostly end up writing it. I am weak!

Okay, so that list above, just basically go with that. While I do drop in and hour of fandoms and some I certainly read in more than others, I do tend to go back to fandoms... If we were talking about what I’m mostly focused on writing atm... Steve/Tony, Mycroft/Lestrade, Harry/Draco and Robron are ones I’m currently working on most.

12. Who is your current OT3?

I’m not currently writing anything that’s OT3 with any real focus. I have a couple of Neal/Peter/Elizabeth WiPs that I will at some point finish, but they aren’t a big focus just now. I did recently read a fabulous Neal/Peter/Elizabeth fic that’s been on my tbr list for ages.

13. Any NoTPs?

Just... see above, lol!

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?

Harry Hart/Merlin, those two are Bro’s until the end and I will fight you on this. Also, Eggsy/Roxy! OMG they are such a BroTP! And Tony/Pepper/Rhodey – I may no like Tony/Pepper as a pairing, but I love them as best friends and of course, our Rhodes, because again, I will fight you on this, they are awesome and Tony needs his best friends!

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?

I’m not sure there is. I suppose I’ve read a few fics for some random pairings over the years, but nothing that’s made me really ship-ship them. I like Clint Barton/Bucky Barnes, after seeing it as a secondary pairing in a Steve/Tony fic, but I’ve seen that pop up a few times since, so maybe it won’t stay obscure for long!

16. Are their any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?

Jack/Sam, Tony/Pepper, Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny, Buffy/Spike – they all seem to be het pairings, oops. But I am mostly a slash fic reader/writer, so I suppose that’s not too surprising.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?

Jack/Daniel from Stargate SG-1. I still love them. I still read them, although it has been a while since I’ve written them on their own (I have got some SG-1/SGA x-overs where they feature)

18. What ship have you written the most about?

I’m genuinely not sure... without going and counting (and I’m not going any counting!) I’d guess Jack/Daniel, McKay/Sheppard, Jack/Ianto and Steve/Danno.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?

No, not that I can think off. I either like it or not. I do occasionally feel bad for not reading a fic if it’s an author I really like, but I don’t read that fandom or pairing, but nothing specific.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?

Robron and Ballum, lol. I do not do soaps!

Author Questions

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

Stargate SG-1, Jack/Daniel, a story called The Dare, The Disaster, The Almost Happy Ending, And The Very Happy Ending – it was awful. Don’t go looking, lol!

22. Is there anything you regret writing?

Don’t we all? No, I wouldn’t specifically say so. There are certainly fics, especially older ones, I wish I could have written better, but nothing I’d go, ugh I should never have done that.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Uh... honestly that’s really hard. I... um... yeah, I don’t know, really. I wrote a nice little flower one in POI that I felt worked rather beautifully. The Language of Flowers. An I wrote an SGA fic for NaNo a few years ago, called A Different Life, but it’s not online, because I didn’t finish it yet and I knew I wasn’t going to finish it any time soon, so I didn’t feel it was fair to leave it up unfinished (there is a reason I don’t read WiP fics and I don’t post them either, because I know how much I hate unfinished WiPs) Edit: After writing this I reminded myself of a POI fic I wrote called Hours of Separation – It’s a Harold/John break up story that I always intended to write a sequel too where I ‘fixed’ them, but I just couldn’t do it. I broke them a little too well. But I really love it actually.

24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?

The afore mentioned A Different Life needs to be edited and finished, lol! Also a Primeval fic with the working title Crypt Keeper (don’t ask) that I worked myself into a bit of a corner on and I figure out how to fix it, but I haven’t done it yet, so it’s still needs fixing and finishing, lol!

25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

I haven’t the foggiest.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

Sometimes, really easily, a quote, a line from the fic, a song title... other times it’s like pulling teeth, hence working titles on things like ‘crypt keeper’ which is a reference to one scene near the very start and has no actual hint of the plot, lol!

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Oh the titles. Summaries you can just copy a few lines from the fic if you are desperate, if you had to post ‘untitled mcshep fic #67’ people would get cranky, lol, hell I’d get cranky!

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

Oh... I... huh. I mean who wouldn’t love fanart for their stories? Any of them honestly! But if I had to choose just one... I guess something in my Animal Instinct verse, which is Primeval (although I always intended to write other fandoms in the verse) where some people transform into animals, based on their ‘spirit animal’ and some art of the characters with their spirit animal form would be awesome.

29. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?

Sometimes, look if you’ve read this far, you know I write in a lot of fandoms, lol. In some fandoms it’s easier than others to find beta readers. Also, sometimes if it’s just something short, I won’t bother. But I do try for my longer fics.

30. What inspires you to write?

That old adage, if you want to read it, sometimes you just have to write it? Spite? Boredom? Honestly sometimes I just have ideas I have to get out of my brain and it’s write or go mad(der)

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

That it inspired them to write something.

32. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?

Sometimes, sometimes I find it distracting when writing because I end up singing along and forgetting what I’m writing, lol! I do sometimes get inspiration from songs, I guess mostly from the lyrics, but no particular band or genre – although I listen to a lot of country music!

33. Do you write oneshots, multi-chapter fics or huuuuuge epics?

Little from column a, little from column b... littler still from column c...

34. What’s the word count on your longest fic?

Around 60k, I think.

35. Do you write drabbles? If so, what do you normally write them about?

I have. Primeval had/has a week drabble challenge, mostly when I’ve written drabbles it’s been for a challenge, with a specific prompt.

36. What’s your favourite genre to write?

Uh... I mean, my fandoms really span the genres, but I guess sci-fi or crime are probably my favourites.

37. First person or third person - what do you write in and why?

Third mostly, I have occasionally written in first person, if it felt like the fic needed it.

38. Do you use established canon characters or do you create OCs?

Little from column a, little from column b... it depends on the fandom and the story. Sometimes you just need more characters, mostly they are minor roles, I don’t tend to write much established character/oc fic

39. What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Ability to convince myself people will want to read it, lol! No actually to be honest, I love to know people read and like my stuff, but I gave up a long time ago on trying to ‘please’ people with what I write. I write what I want to read.

40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?

Focus. The problem with 21 years of fandom history, is well... 21 years of fandom history. A lot of fandoms, a lot of pairings and as I say, I never really ‘leave’ a fandom, I just drop in and out and sometimes that means I’ll write on something consistently for weeks or months and then end up getting distracted by another fandom again and not touch it for weeks or months again. Hence, I don’t post WiP fics, because I know I’m easily distracted and don’t want anyone to suffer my lack of focus but me.

43. Is there anyone in your fandom who really inspires you?

Everyone. The thing is, fandom at it’s best is like crack, the more you get, the more you want. The writing, the gifs, the art... it feeds you and makes you want to make more of it, because more of it needs to exist and if that means you need to do it yourself, so be it!

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

ALL OF THEM!

45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?

Oh hell no, not even, I can not. It took me an hour to narrow down 5 authors, I can not narrow down one fanfic!

46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?

I mean, it depends on what they like... probably the Hour of Separation I mentioned above, if they like the fandom/pairing, or my Animal Instinct stuff.

47. Archive Of Our Own, Fanfiction.net or Tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?

Archive of our Own. I haven’t touched ff.net in *years* since they started getting super restrictive about what you could post. I do occasionally post stuff to tumblr, but mostly I now post to AO3. I did have my own site and I’ve yet to upload a lot of stuff to AO3 – one of these... months... that will be a project – but it’s amazing. Seriously, having been in fandom 20+ years, going from having to search all over a million different places and now it’s all in one place, where we’re honestly, spoiled and protected. The kids now have no idea how crazy impossible that once seemed.

48. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?

Yes, but not as often as I should. I love AO3s kudos button, so I can sort of say ‘hey I enjoyed this’ without having to comment, because I sort of hate leaving comments just going ‘hey I enjoyed this’ because I always feel like I should say more, like, oh I enjoyed this specific thing, which yes is an unnecessary hang-up, but there ya go.

49. Do you care if people comment/reblog your writing? Why/why not?

Of course it’s nice to get comments, kudos, reblogs etc. I’m not as attached to them now as I was when I was younger, because I learned along the way that it was more important that I like what I’m writing than that other people do, but it’s still nice to know that something I’ve created is enjoyed.

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

I went looking for Star Trek Voyager stuff online, pics etc, waaaaaaay back when! And I came across fanfiction entirely by accident... and I read some – het stuff mostly, then I started watching Stargate SG-1, went looking for fanfiction for that, but was not on board with Jack/Sam, found Jack/Daniel went ‘huh really? That’s weird’ read it... and yeah... 21 years later... lol!

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

Ship Wars. No seriously, just don’t. Like, who the actual fuck cares. I like my ship, you like your ship. I don’t care if it’s canon or not. I don’t care if it’s popular or not. I don’t read my NoTPs, but I’d never dream of telling someone else not too. Yes I think they are terrible, bad, no good pairings, but that’s *my* opinion. Don’t try to change my mind and I won’t try to change yours. I avoid them like the actual plague. If someone starts that shit around me, I will shut it right down. You are a dick. Go to Jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect £200.
