Interiors - Japanese minimalism. Thousands of years steeped in tradition have influenced Japan’s architecture and interior design aesthetic, resulting in the serene and uncluttered style, known to the rest of the world as Japanese minimalism. Inspired by the spartan aesthetic of Japan’s traditional Zen Buddhism, the minimalist movement goes against modern consumerism, keeping life simple and uncluttered by adhering to the bare essentials. Japanese aesthetics evolved around clean and uncluttered living, holding tightly to balance, ancient customs and a love for natural beauty. Western interior design trends have latched onto Japanese minimalism in recent years. This style is epitomised by simplicity of form and function with open, light-filled spaces. A key aspect of minimalist interior design is harmonising with and reflecting nature through the use of natural elements, such as wood. Wood flooring keeps things simplified and streamlined; the natural texture of wood also adds warmth to living spaces. In addition to wood, other natural elements are incorporated, including plants and trees. Using a neutral colour palette, with beige, brown, ivory, taupe, black, grey and varying shades of white, furniture and decorations are kept to a bare minimum, focusing only on the essentials. Colourfully Neutral

A neutral envelope doesn’t have to be colourless.

In fact, a fresh one colour wrap can render classic profiles into soft sculpture and provide an unfettered backdrop for all manner of creative and colourful additions.

This formula has always played out well in our designs. I believe that a home should have the flexibility to evolve and develop its personal layers over time and this is all possible with a clean ground. Timeless and never stagnant.

This dining room has classic proportions, clean stepped profiles, and refined luminaires of crystal. It all sits back in warm white silhouette, inviting contemporary detail and saturated hues to share the limelight. Nothing colourless here.

I remember clearly when the vibrant burst of commissioned art took its place. The large central panel had been waiting for it. It was an electric charge that filled the room and the lights went on!

A composition of large-scale magenta vases and clear acrylic boxes filled with the vibrant green stems of calla lilies bring more charge to this gracious setting. The contemporary floral rendition is anything but ubiquitous and provides a perfect distribution of colour and form on a robust table. 

A velvet touch of deep cobalt outlines the elegant curves of custom Captain’s chairs. It’s a detail that effectively brings fluidity to the room in both line and colour and one that reins in the grand volumes.

I love the elegant tune of this classic space. An understated rhythm moves within the silk threads of carpet and the soft curves in furnishings that find their connection with grand Palladian arches framed with satin.
