Puente Alcántara sobre el río Tajo y Alcázar, Toledo, 1976.
This photo is about my only clear memory of my first visit to the city. At that time  it was necessary to walk across the medieval bridge from the RENFE station in order to enter Toledo. Soon after arrival with a group of friends, we had a comida which included unlimited quantities of wine. I barely remember the remainder of the day.
The Alcázar is a reconstruction of a building destroyed in the Civil War of the 1930s. It was rebuilt as a shrine to fascistic military coup members who held out until they were killed in the historic fortress, a building used as a military academy. The building became hugely important as a symbol for the fascist victory when the insurgents under Franco ultimately prevailed in the war and thus was rebuilt.
