I just watched live-action Aladdin, and while on the whole I enjoyed it, I have a few complaints.

I think I noticed some auto-tuning during Arabian Nights and Prince Ali, but none in Friend Like Me. Uhm, I’m not sure. But I did really enjoy Friend Like Me, even though it - like all of the songs - seemed to finish too quickly. Idk if it was just the live-action thing that make them look like they’re going faster, lol.

I guess Jasmine’s song is titled Speechless, and idk if it’s included in the Broadway version, but it felt so off. So out of style with the other songs. Idk if it was because it was the only new one, but... yeah, it kinda matched wrong. Also please tell me I’m not the only one who felt like the repeat of the word “speechless” - as in, where she was saying like “I won’t be speechless, speechless” felt inappropriate, as if she was emphasizing the adjective instead of her denial to be that exact adjective.

Aladdin was pretty nonplussed to find the magic carpet but lost his shit at the Genie? Kinda confusing me there, am I supposed to suspend my disbelief or not? 

I was also confused at the seriousness of things. Jafar was turned into a more serious - and hotter, thanks OUAT/IW - villain, and I gotta tell you I did mourn the lack of Prince Ali Reprise, and the whole film had a more serious tone, as in giving Jasmine more authority and the will to rule her own kingdom and the Sultan not being the comic relief like he was in the animated film, but at the same time they wanted to play off that? Like, during Prince Ali, when they all froze, waiting for the Sultan to tap his hand on the rhythm... I felt I was getting mixed messages there.

Also as someone who adored the fact that Iago had a redemption arc in Return of Jafar (I mean I haven’t watched the film in more than 15 years and I don’t remember if it’s actually good but I remember enjoying that part specifically) and was good in King of Thieves, I felt that... aaaaaahhhhh nooooooo. At least in the animated film Iago is a comic relief, here he’s not, and I was like... ????? What am I supposed to feel as someone who’s watched all three films????

Idk if it’s racism but I really didn’t like that the main characters didn’t have an accent while the rest did, and even that guy who caught Jasmine “stealing” in the market at the beginning wasn’t even speaking correctly. That was... weird.

The wedding scene kinda bummed me, because I loved how in the animated version they were alone on the carpet, because it was their moment, instead of it being a moment for everyone else *cough*CSwedding*cough*.

Anyway, those may seem a lot, but I actually liked it a lot. The music was good, the effects were great (RAJA WHAT A GOOD BIG KITTY) it was colourful and pretty, I appreciated the lack of “slave Jasmine”, father-daughter bonding moment OMG and I actually liked Will Smith as the Genie, something I hadn’t expected at all. And the scene where he’s being freed! I had feels, I’m telling ya.

I mean, whatever. I laughed out loud in the cinema, at times along with the rest of the 20 people who were in it, so it gets a solid thumbs-up from me.
