He was somehow both shy and smug as he answered. “Just a little something I learned from up north.” He took a sip of his tea and leaned against the counter and Emma sighed. Day two in the bakeoff ‘bubble’ and she already wanted to kill someone.

This had been a truly terrible idea. She was going to kill Ruby, too, while she was at it, for entering her.

He put his tea down and moved toward her. Instinctively, she shifted away.

“Easy, love,” he said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver flask. “I was just going to offer you a bit of a jolt for your tea. No offense, but you look like you could use one. Especially since you should be celebrating instead of yelling at me.”

She glared. He smiled.

“Don’t get me wrong, Swan—Even when you’re yelling at me, I quite fancy you.” An eyebrow raised; she relented.

“Jesus, Jones, is rum your solution to everything?”

“‘Killian’ will do.” His smile widened. “And—it is tonight.”

That’s how it started.

He was waiting for her in the kitchen.

Somehow, she’d known he would be. She sipped her tea and looked at him. “That was a one-time thing, you know. The other night.” Another sip. She ran her finger across the badge she still had pinned to her shirt. “Did you—”

“Yeah,” he said. His flask was out and open. His expression was soft and open. “Just thought you deserved to show off a bit, Swan. I’m rooting for you.”

Even his smile was soft.

She put the cup down and took two steps forward and grabbed him.

He dropped his mug.

Neither of them noticed.

The AGA kept burning, but no one showed up.

Emma didn’t sleep well without her midnight cuppa.

She tossed and turned and dozed and rolled over and then she saw it in the corner of her eye, like always; it hovered, a twinkle of light. Whitish-green.

She dreamed of him: Dark and handsome. She was warm and comfortable and safe in the arms of the man who held her.

She saw the twinkle of light—felt the magic—

“I know this is a dream,” Emma said to the twinkle.

It winked out.

She woke up.

Emma was the one waiting for him, that night.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “The other night—” she stopped to collect herself. Her fingers ran absently along the lines of her bandage.

(Tracing the path he had marked with his care.)

He waited.

(He always waited.)

“I couldn’t handle it,” she said. “It felt like—”

(Magic. Sparks, white and green.)

“I felt it too,” he said, and stepped forward. It happened so quickly, the way he pulled her toward him.

The star badge lay on the counter, half-forgotten while the tea got cold.
