gray and sharing screentime with himself

in my current brainrot over a singular character, i decided to compile all the distinctions between gray and graham

looking at a very rough approximation of the screen time gray has throughout the show, the weird thing is that he is himself at the beginning and at the end.

graham takes many actions during s1 and s2 that differ from the gray we meet in the train in s1

Name: from found cut content from the original pilot of cs before netflix, it is carmen who suggests gray as graham's nickname. gray takes it without much care. graham, on the other hand, insists on his full name. seen in s2 ep7, both when carmen meets him up at the cafe and after FALLING FROM A PARAGLIDER. when asked his name during s4 ep3, his va emphasizes graham -- though i could be reading into things. guess brainwashing came along with a hatred with nicknames lol (probably to prevent carmen ever triggering gray's memories)

Life goal: we get gray's interview tape that showed his interest in vile, revealing not only was he a criminal before vile but he primarily "[wants] to be successful". (In cut content, during the detention scene where they all discuss code names, gray refuses sheena's suggestion of power failure because he didn't want to be thought of as a failure). gray joined vile because he didn't want to play within the system, believing he's deserving of success more than others due to his own skills so he's better off cheating the system. in contrast, graham in s1 ep6 declines being carmen's guide due to having to go to work early to fix something. He even declines carmen's payment for his work during s2 ep7, only stopped cuz carmen is good at dramatically disappearing. he is so diligent that within eight months, he was able to work up to be a lighting tech from just starting out as an electrician. meanwhile, he gave up being a junior electrican at the Sydney opera house as a teen due to disatisfaction (idk anything abt australia but isnt being a junior electrcian at the sydney opera house a big deal??)

Morality: most blatantly in his line "but we are the good guys" in s2 ep7 (i think he repeats this again during his interrogation with acme in s4), graham has a sense of morality that gray obviously would lack since he joined vile willingly. gray has no issues with stealing and has had a clear arrogance in his abilities ever since he was a teen. killing doesn't seem to be off the table for him, but he only does so if that compromises his mission. (for example, he gives chase a chance to leave during s4 ep 7, so he def isn't taking any excuse to take a life). graham's main act of "goodness" is risking his own life to save a kid in s4 ep3. while im sure gray is heartless enough to watch a kid die, i dont think he would be as ready to risk himself for a stranger. he likely would be more apathetic and would do so if it has some benefit to him or look the other way -- right after saving the kid, "crackle" steals the nameless kid's wallet with a smile. from his confrontation with carmen in the himalyas, he responds to carmen using his old words as him being an "innocent fool", dimissing whatever he believed then as not his own

crackle is another semi identity we get from gray during the fugue state he enters following regaining his memories from acme. it seems to be just due to how drastic the memories are for graham's mind to handle, the split is very direct, with "crackle" - all of gray's training and criminal instincts - being pretty non verbal (he does i think talk on the phone with vile once) and expresionless (he does have an evil little smile after stealing nameless kid's wallet but thats abt it). it honestly is dropped fast once gray is arrested (had to bolt the moment it faced consequences or whatever lol) but it def was entertaining to watch

overall it is just so odd how gray himself is barely in show and if u were to cut out the graham stuff, gray's arc of reconciling his relationship with carmen is largely unchanged. goes to show how wasted the cool amnesia plot stuff was (tho i like brainwashing angst, but i dont blame anyone for not enjoying it. it takes away a lot of the autonomy gray could've had in actually making his morally gray decisions). it honestly feels like they pumped the break of the brainwashing angst we were getting from gray and give it to carmen for the final arc tbh

GARTE, THE CAFETERIA MANAGER - He grimaces. "I think *fugue states* are more your *forte*, officer."

GARTE, THE CAFETERIA MANAGER - "The Trash Collection Service? CS Municipal. I don't see why they would *put* anything in the trash, though."

KIM KITSURAGI - "Ah, the illusive CS Municipal. I doubt we'll be able to track down who was sent here last and when. This will have to be one of those *little* threads that solves itself -- down the road."

He turns to the man. "Thank you anyway."

Nightingale is the attacker, the monster in her dream is her, and she attacks in her sleep/dissociative state. Because…she has access to a scalpel as the nurse I’m sure. We discover this when she snaps out of a fugue IN THE INSANE ASYLUM of the hospital 👀

Lieutenant Sage (Lieutenant-Commander) Serena Bethany Griffiths 2041-Nov-25 (Lt Green from the new Captain Scarlet series. While she was 'present' the whole time, she doesn't really come into full focus until the 'second half' of the series, which is the nCS half. The reason she doesn't look like / doesn't use the nCS Green rig is that by sheer chance Lt Green sounds IDENTICAL to my IRL friend (and fellow massive CS fangirl) Mbali... and Mbali has Vitiligo and so I ended up making 'our' version of the character have vitiligo as well... but I COULD NOT get the vitiligo to look right on greens actual model / rig so hunted around till I found a RL person with the condition and used that for Sage ^^;; )

Inside the Time Bubble, 20 years occur for Koala Base, where-as only 4 years pass outside the Time Bubble. There were a few non-Koala base personnel trapped within the bubble, among them were Captain Blue and Symphony Angel, who had four children. Two of whom were 19 and 18 years of age when the Bubble went down, and joined Spectrum as Angels. The younger two are currently preteens. Ed received full training during the 20 year span, and once all was said and done, he was made an Angel pilot. He gets nCS Magenta's screen time, but not his personality)

The Enlisted have fake names, just as the officers do. But rather than color coding, they have object or job coding (delta, hearth, smith, stone, bridge, etc)

Spectrum Uniforms

Just making a 'Master Post' that I can hopefully link to from my main tumblr page.

This will be the uniform versions and (once I make them) 'character collage' images.

Characters posted in descending rank order, and for characters of the same rank, descending age.

The highest rating in Spectrum is OF-7 (2 star admiral), there is no OF-1 rating or OR-1 rating, and while there are Warrant Officers, there are only two ranks of Warrant Officer.

Only the Officers are Color Coded (and all Officers are Color Coded). The Enlisted aren't color coded, BUT they have fake names, using surnames that are jobs or structures, etc (Smith, Bridge, etc)

FLAG OFFICERS and SENIOR OFFICERS

Spectrum's ranks are set up to be rather opaque / confounding to those outside of Spectrum to a greater or lesser degree as one of the measures of protection for the members of the organization.

The rank / rating insignia are purposefully understated, and there is rank title sharing between of5 & of4 (captain), and of3 & of2 (Lieutenant)

The ranks are also overall unique. While I did change the rank title on Colonel White to Admiral White, that was due to the fact that a Colonel is an of5 essentially world wide, and even if he wasn't REALLY that rank, the fact remains that White would be treated as said rank by everyone he worked with, which actually would cause issues on the regular.

Thus, Colonel White became Admiral White, using Naval ranking rather than Army because White had been Navy prior to Spectrum, AND because doing so had the added bonus of bumping the Captains from of3 up to of5.

My annual was damaged by a coffee stain, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I found out that'd I'd misread Destiny's birthyear for decades ^^;; I just kept myficverse Destiny with the 'wrong' birth year simply because it's what I'm used to for her)

Captain Brown Stephen Blackburn 2033 - Jan - 14 (While I originally used Brown's canon name of Alan Stephens, when I switched the TV21 Zero X comics crew with Spectrum characters (Black, Destiny, Brown, Goldenrod), Brown was showing up too often and having his real name used too much and it became too easy to mix him up with Alan Tracy, so I used his surname for his given name, and used the popular fanon surname for his surname)

I just don't like it when characters that are basically OCs use pre-existing character names... thus, Lady Ochre needed a new Color Code ^^. Her surname was changed to Jenkins as a tip of the hat to Leroy Jenkins, casue she is SO VERY MUCH a Leroy Jenkins type of character XD )

She's a background / support character, but she was Captain Brown's wife, and is the mother of Starbuck "Buck" Blackburn - the second Captain Brown)

Buck received full training during the 20 year span, and once all was said and done, he was made a Color Captain - taking up his father's Color Code by his request.

THAT OPENING. I jumped when Kai started screaming and snapped John out of his fugue.

“You need medical attention.” “No, I’m fine.” Take note ladies. Men. Don’t. Change. In 500 years they will still refuse to see doctors. 😂

This Roman Quinn guy didn’t put fail safes in his UV decontamination system…and no one has fixed it since? That’s kind of an important thing. Just not as important as Pablo Schreiber and Natascha McElhone showcasing their acting chops, I guess. Which was a sight to behold so I’m not complaining.

John orders people around waaaay too much for an MCPO, even if he is THE Master Chief. But then, if almost seven feet of pissed off Spartan waked in and told me he needed the room…I’d probably just up and leave and figure my superiors would understand LOL.

I didn’t like Miranda early on, but I’ve gotta say the show has really given her a chance to shine the last few episodes. I am VERY curious to see what happens with her in charge of the Spartans.

Riz and Vannak will find out about the true origins of the Spartan program “when they’re ready.” Is John plotting to have them remove their pellets? Kai says her parents could be out there still. Will she find them?

Adun has been designing firewalls for 30 years? He doesn’t even look 30 years old.

Halsey just does. Not. Stop. She’s so matter of fact when explaining the Spartan program to John and doesn’t even see the irony of parents not giving up their children easily. Then she does the crocodile tears with Miranda. Gosh. Read CS Lewis’s Men Without Chests and there you have Catherine Halsey.

Cortana is “not programmed” to decide if she works for John or Halsey. At some point she’ll have to decide. No AI can serve two masters after all. We all know how this is going to go but I’m still interested in how we get there.

That brings me to the big question of this episode: Makee. What the heck is her angle? She’s obviously loyal to the Covenant but what’s her angle with John? If she wanted to kill him she could have done it already so she isn’t just looking to eliminate him. Does she want to turn him and make the Covenant’s biggest enemy their greatest ally? Does she just see him as a kindred spirit? More importantly, will he buy what she’s selling him? OK. I admit it. Makee is probably the most intriguing bit of the show.

I still want to know what happened in John’s family once he found the artifact on Eridanus, and what the deal is with the plague that wiped everything out. That’s just way too flimsy an explanation for an entire colony ceasing to exist.

In terms of pure execution this is the best episode thus far, no question. The pacing was tight, the acting was top-notch, and the music especially at the end was incredible. The whole finally equaled the sum of the parts. I always knew the series was capable of this quality and I wish it hadn’t taken six episodes to get here, but wow am I glad we did.

police violence and propaganda in ITV’s Endeavour

“That’s not what my dad says... he says you’re all bastards.” - Tommy Cork, Endeavour, ‘Neverland’.

- first of all, I’m white, so if any black people or other poc want to weigh in, please please do. this isn’t going to be a post about race specifically (mostly because there’s barely anything to talk about, Russell Lewis loves him some white characters) but obviously since a hugely disproportionate amount of police violence in real life is towards black people, that has to be a part of the conversation.

- second of all, all cops are bastards. yes, in the uk too.

- it’s not like i’ve seen anyone in the fandom defending fictional police officers or anything (unlike, say, some people in the brooklyn 99 fandom), so this isn’t a response to anything i’ve seen, but if we’re all going to be stanning a cop show i think this needs to be addressed.

- i’m not any kind of expert, i’m just taking information i’ve learnt elsewhere and applying it to Endeavour.

- i’m very willing to debate on stuff, but read the whole post before you do.

Police corruption

so, the overarching plot in Endeavour, from the pilot to the season 6 finale, is police corruption. However, the corrupting influence is not the police force itself. Instead, it’s the Freemasons, a “secret” society. All the corrupt police officers in Endeavour, from ACC Deare to DS Chard to DS Lott are either Masons themselves, have Masonic connections, or are being bribed/blackmailed by Masons. The point of the corruption plotline is that the police are not corrupt themselves, it’s an external influence that is causing the police force problems. Our main characters are the good police officers!! They hate corruption!!

Fred Thursday

Fred Thursday is a narrative foil for Morse. His family life is a reflection of what Morse doesn’t have. This is a large part of season 1, mostly in Fugue and Home. However, he also does morally ambiguous things that Morse doesn’t agree with. For example, in the season 1 episode Rocket, Thursday is xenophobic towards a German engineer, which Morse is vocal about disagreeing with. We the viewers aren’t supposed to agree with Thursday about this, but there’s never a point where Thursday goes ‘oh yeah I probably shouldn’t hate this German dude who obviously isn’t a nazi’. He keeps his views, and this is never addressed again.

In the season 5 episode Quartet, Thursday covers up for a woman who pushed her abusive husband down the stairs, saying that he must have tripped. Morse also vocally disagrees with this. However, I think the writer intended Thursday’s actions here to be more sympathetic. Which yeah, fair enough, right? The wife doesn’t deserve to go to jail for defending herself. But the problem here is Thursday’s interpretation of justice. At no point, even after seeing evidence of domestic abuse towards the wife twice (and it’s implied that there was more that occurred prior to the episode that he knew about) does he arrest or question the husband. He thinks that because the husband died, that’s justice done. He didn’t actually try to carry out justice using the legal system. And I know that legally domestic abuse can be a tricky thing, especially in the 60s, but Thursday essentially ignores his duty as a police officer to intervene in the obvious domestic abuse situation, and then covers up for the wife. And the line that genuinely bothers me so much, and is what makes me think we’re meant to interpret his actions as good:

Thursday: God was out, he left me in charge

Like, no, Thursday, you’re a police officer and it’s your job to carry out the law, not allow an abuse situation to escalate to the point where the wife is forced to kill her husband in self-defence and then lie about it. And i’m positive that this was a quote featured on the official Endeavour Twitter page when the episode aired, so I think we’re meant to be like ‘oh yeah, that’s reasonable’, not ‘uhhhhhh wtf’.

Another, more recent example: season 7. During episode 1, ‘Oracle’, Thursday believes that Carl Sturgis is guilty of the murder of Molly Andrews - his girlfriend - on the towpath. He is questioned. He says he is innocent, and also has an alibi for the murder. Morse believes that Sturgis is innocent; Thursday believes he is guilty.

[SEASON 7 SPOILERS]

Thursday then spends the rest of the season following Sturgis around, trying to find evidence that he’s the towpath killer. Morse finds out about this and tells him to stop. He doesn’t stop. A different man is caught in the act at the towpath, and after being chased by a group of young women, is hit by a car and dies. It’s decided that he was the towpath killer.

Then, Strange searches a house that turns out to be owned by Sturgis. During this search, Strange finds a kidnapped woman, Jenny Tate, in an upstairs room. It turns out that Sturgis did kill Molly Andrews, and all of the other young women at the towpath, and that the man who died at the towpath was a copycat killer. Thursday’s actions here - stalking Carl Sturgis - are justified by the narrative because Sturgis was guilty all along, despite there being evidence to the contrary, and lawfully Thursday should not have been pursuing Sturgis after he was released from police custody.

But the worst thing Thursday does is literal police violence - and on quite a few occasions.

The “Good” Police officers

Now, I’m going to talk about two instances within the show where Thursday uses unlawful violence, and people within the CID cover up for him.

1. Coda.

(disclaimer: i haven’t watched this episode in ages, so if i get a fact wrong i’m sorry but i know the general gist is right)

Thursday is interrogating Bernie Waters, a young man with connections to the Matthews gang. He wants information about... something, I think it might be regarding a possible power struggle within the gang, or a crime somewhere. Morse is waiting outside, unaware of what Thursday is doing. He goes into the warehouse where Thursday and Waters are, to find Thursday... it’s unclear what he’s doing, honestly, the scene is framed so we can’t see properly, but it’s enough to cause Waters pain, and when Thursday lets go, Waters is bending over and breathing heavily.

Now, Morse doesn’t agree with this, and tells Thursday so. Morse: ‘I don’t remember anything about that in the Sergeant’s training manual’. He knows that Thursday isn’t above iffy conduct (he punches Teddy Samuels in the face in the pilot, and pays a newspaper salesman for information in Home). But in the end, out of loyalty to Thursday, Morse doesn’t mention it to Bright. (Similarly, in the pilot, Morse is outright asked by the CS if Thursday punched Samuels, and Morse says no, he didn’t.) Thursday gets away with it.

So, Morse is the so called “good” police officer. Telling Thursday he doesn’t agree with his methods isn’t going to get him to stop. He’s the one who people say, oh, but he doesn’t commit acts of violence towards members of the public. He just turns a blind eye to the officers that do do that.

And I don’t care that Waters is a criminal, or has connections to this gang. Police officers don’t beat up people so they give up information. That isn’t lawful.

2. Prey.

I had a conversation with another member of the fandom about this recently, and we both agreed that it really bothered us. For a large portion of the episode, the CID has in custody Mr Hodges, a park warden who offered a lift to Ingrid Hjort, a missing young woman. He’s also implicated in a similar case from around a year ago, in which a woman was sexually assaulted and left in a coma. He’s in custody for much of the episode, constantly changing his story about Hjort, but maintaining that they can’t prove his guilt. In a search of his property, Strange finds underwear belonging to the woman from a year ago, which would prove his guilt in that case. However, before Strange can return and present this evidence, Morse and Thursday are questioning Hodges again. Hodges says ‘I didn’t do it, and you can’t prove that I did’, while leering at Thursday. Thursday says ‘Can’t prove it, he says’, stands up and starts beating Hodges.

Again, this isn’t presented as a good thing. Morse attempts to pull Thursday off Hodges, and afterwards CS Bright yells at him, saying they’d just received evidence from Strange.

However, a plotline in this season is a bullet in Thursday’s lung, left from when he was shot at the end of the previous season’s finale, Neverland. This causes him pain and frequent coughing fits. And, you know, he’s dealing with a lot at home, like his son saying he wants to join the army. Bright understands this. Thursday is under a lot of pressure.

Then, Bright tells Thursday that he will write in his report that Hodges fell down the stairs on the way back to his cell.

So this time, instead of having a junior officer showing loyalty by not reporting an incident, we have a senior officer lying to protect his subordinate. And again, it’s framed like Bright is proving his loyalty to Thursday, but... police officers should not beat up people they’re questioning. Like Bright said, they had just gathered enough evidence to charge Hodges, so this was unnecessary.

Other incidents of note

There’s a lot to talk about in Inspector Morse and Lewis too, but I’m not going to elaborate on them in this post. If you want me to, drop me a reply or DM and I will. These include:

- Morse lying about his identity in order to gain entry to a suspect’s college rooms (Inspector Morse, ‘The Dead of Jericho’)

- Morse and Lewis entering a possible suspect’s flat without a warrant (Inspector Morse, ‘Last Seen Wearing’)

- Lewis entering a member of the public’s house and threatening her child by shouting in his face and grabbing his arms (Lewis, ‘Expiation’. This is called out in the episode by CS Innocent, however she doesn’t actually punish him in any way, and it’s framed as if Lewis’s actions were perfectly reasonable because the child was withholding information. It’s also worth noting that this child is black.)

- Hathaway threatening a teenager after he possibly is lying during a murder investigation (Lewis, ‘Intelligent Design’. The teenager commits suicide soon after, and it’s strongly implied that while the threats weren’t the sole cause of him killing himself, they were the breaking point for him.)

- Lewis and Hathaway hounding a suspect for the entirety of an episode despite him not being guilty of anything (Lewis, ‘The Mind Has Mountains’)

- Edit: Morse lying about a woman's involvement in several murders in order to get her a lesser sentence (Inspector Morse, 'Service of All the Dead')

General points

Often in police shows, the police officers commit actions which, while illegal, are framed within the show as being necessary evils. For example, two detectives have strong reason to believe a suspect is guilty. Instead of obtaining a search warrant, they enter the suspect’s house without one and search the place for evidence. They end up finding evidence that the suspect is guilty. Despite the fact that the detectives broke the law by illegally searching the house, they are justified by the fact that they found enough evidence to prosecute the guilty person. We, the viewers, are meant to find these illegal actions reasonable because they ultimately lead to justice being served; the ends justify the means. Well, no. In the case of police officers breaking the law, they don’t.

Conclusion

Endeavour is hardly the worst example of ‘copaganda’, i.e. propaganda specifically designed to paint the police force in a positive, rosy light. It’s set in the 1960s, it isn’t relevant in the 21st century. Nevertheless, I believe that any show where the main characters are police officers is a form of copaganda, even if unintentionally. We are meant to side with the protagonist in any media (unless they’re an antihero, which is not the case in Endeavour). In Endeavour, the protagonist is Morse, who is a police officer. The majority of the main characters are also police officers. No matter how morally grey Thursday is painted as, he is still a protagonist.

I’m not saying we should stop watching Endeavour. It’s one of my favourite shows. But, when a show incorporates police officer characters and police violence, we need to think critically about it. We need to challenge the ideas put forwards in the show instead of just accepting them. Yes, there are more important things to be worrying about right now, but I wanted to make this post because the murder of George Floyd and the ongoing riots in Minneapolis made me consider the implications of television shows which paint the police force as the good guys, because we live in a world where the police force are not the good guys. And when our media is telling us that they are, we need to stop, take a step back, and think about why that is.

Scammed

A CS Fic inspired by this post.

Emma just wanted to relax at the end of her day. But there are always those annoying scam calls......

If this is well received, I would be inclined to continue it. But for now, I’m leaving it as is.

Emma sighed as she flopped down onto the couch, savoring finally being off her feet after a long night in her highest heels, because there was a newbie at the station who insisted on doing everything by the book. Which meant that Emma had had to stay until every single piece of paperwork was filed before she would get paid. And unfortunately, being at the precinct so long meant that she had ready access to mediocre free coffee.

So rather than try to lay in her bed and force herself to sleep, Emma decided to savor the night, or rather early morning. So she opted for some background Netflix radiation, some Youtube scrolling, and a glass of wine.

She was three episodes on Netflix, a second glass of wine, and probably fifty “Up Next” videos into her evening when her phone started ringing. She tiredly pulled it from her pocket, not really bothering to look at it as she absentmindedly swiped to answer it, her eyes still watching the “DIY Zipline From Your Balcony” video.

“‘Lo?” she mumbled, expecting the office.

“Oh I am so glad we were finally able to reach you, lass!”

Emma was abruptly pulled from her fugue state by a British-accented voice that was definitely not Leroy’s. She pulled the phone away from her ear to look at the number.

Cranford, New Jersey

Who the fuck would be calling her from Cranford, New Jersey? Who the fuck would even want to be in a place called Cranford?

She brought the phone back to her ear, “I’m sorry, who is this?”

There was a practiced, easy laugh from the line, “Oh sorry, I thought they warned you we were going to be calling. This is IT. We received a notice that your IP address had been compromised and the higher ups asked us to make sure your computer was secured.”

Emma bit her lip to keep her laugh in as she realized exactly what was going on. And because the next video on autoplay was some weird “Turn Your Tampons Into Ring Stands” craft video, she thought that maybe this might offer a bit more entertainment.

And if she like the man’s voice, so sue her, it was three in the morning.

So Emma answered, “Did they?”

“Aye,” and there it was, she could hear, just under the charming joviality of a well-practiced customer service voice, the ring of victory in his tone. “So if you just want to get to your laptop and get things set up, I’ll walk you through it.”

“Oh yeah sure, ok.” She nodded her head to make sure her voice was just the right tone of gullibly agreeable. “Let me just boot it up.”

“Excellent, lass.”

She could practically see him rubbing his hands together, cracking them, and then settling above his keyboard, his little hacker den all dark save the green of the code displayed on his computer, a clunky headset on and a half drunk soda next to his stack of porn magazines.

She grinned at the mental image before shaking her head to get the smile off her face. She needed to get into character. She arranged her features a few different times until she found the suitably coy innocent expression that should giver her voice just the right tone to serve her purpose.

Then she put on her best blonde impression as she spoke.

“So like, I don’t know all that much about computers. But you guys are calling really late! They must work you all to the bone in IT!” She paused, allowing the boost to flow through the phone and into her would-be IT guy’s probably very tiny dick.

“Aye, that they do. The digital world never sleeps and so neither do we.” She could tell he bought it by the faux sympathetic and slightly condescending answer. “And don’t worry about your inexperience. Just listen to me and I’ll hold your hand through the whole thing.”

“Oh I’m so glad to hear that. I am always so worried about someone managing to get my information off my computer. I’m so glad you’ll help me fix it.”

“Oh lass, after I’m through with you, it won’t be even a background thought anymore,” his tone turned lascivious, and she rolled her eyes. Men were so easy, and she was already bored of this game. And the next video was about “Ten Neat Tricks to Remove a Blood Stain” and that one seemed like it was going to be helpful.

So she just moved in for the kill.

“Just a quick question though,” she didn’t bother with the faux diction. And she knew he’d noticed because the line was deadly silent for a second.

Then he inquired warily, “….Aye, and that is?”

“Is that honestly the best you could come up with?”

There was another pregnant pause, before, “I don’t know what you are referring to lass.”

“Is ‘I’m your IT guy’ really the best one you could come up with? Like if you are going to try and scam someone, at least put some effort into it.”

“I’m not trying to scam you lass, I’m trying to fix your laptop,” his voice became a little earnest and he started talking more quickly. She could practically smell the sweat beading on his brow. “It’s very vulnerable right now and the higher ups have-”

“Bud, I am the higher ups in my job.”

“.................................Ah.”

“Yep,” she popped the P with immense satisfaction. “Also, three in the morning? Really?”

“Well you are awake too, so I feel like you can’t be throwing stones on that score, love.”

She blinked as the accent abruptly turned throaty-er and more like a growl, a thick Irish brogue that no longer carried the faux pleasantry of a service call, but rather an indignant irritation. She popped an eyebrow.

“I’m sorry, I’m calling you out on your bullshit scam attempt and you are criticizing my sleeping schedule?”

There was another pause, before he mumbled, “I’m just sayin’.”

Emma’s lips twitched, “Right. Well Mr. ‘I’m just saying,’ I’m going to hang up now so I can watch my video on “Ten Neat Tricks to Remove a Blood Stain.”

“I’m sorry, what?” there was a sudden sharpness to his voice, and it took Emma a second to figure out why. She must have had more wine than she thought, because the moment she did, she burst out laughing.

“Oh!.... No….. It’s not…. Oh my god…….It’s…... that’s hilarious,” she couldn’t stifle her laughing enough to get a full sentence out.

“Lass?” his voice growled in a warning tone, frustration evident in his tone.

“Sorry, sorry,” she wiped her eyes as she managed to slowly subdue her chuckles. “I just…. Oh god, this is hilarious….. I was watching a Youtube video on penguins a few hours ago, and somehow ended up on the DYI channel. I mean the last video was on DYI crafts with tampons so….” She broke off into another set of errant giggles.

“Oh.” There was another long pause. “Erm, my apologies lass. I.. um … didn’t-” his voice now sounded chagrined and extremely uncomfortable.

Emma cleared her throat to chase away the last of her laughter, before she continued with a broad smile, “And you have to admit there is a certain bit of irony that the dude who called me at three in the morning to try and scam me out of my money is making moral judgements on my character.”

“.......................Right. Point taken.”

“Ok Mr. Scam Man-” she snorted at herself, “I would really like to return to my bottle of wine now so I’ll bid you a good night. Good luck with your next calls…. I guess. Come up with something better though. Like not even someone’s grandma would fall for that.”

“Alas, love, you’d be quite astounded at how many people are not a clearly discerning as you. And, um…... before you go, do you mind if I ask you a question?”

She shrugged, not really thinking about it. There was another pause. “Did you just ...shrug at me?” he asked incredulously.

“Yeah,” she nodded, repeated the action to demonstrate.

“Love, you do realize that you are still talking on the phone right?” now his voice was affectionately amused.

“Oh, right.” The adrenaline and caffeine crash that she’d been waiting on suddenly slammed into her full force, and she let out a huge yawn. “Sorry, ‘Scuse me. Seems like my day’s finally catchin’ up with me.” She mumbled to herself, before remembering that he’d wanted to ask her something. “So go ahead Mr. Scam Man- shoot.”

The line was quiet again for a moment, before the man asked his question.

“I just… why did you answer the phone if you knew it was a scam call?”

“Well, I dinin at first, thought you were the office.”

“Then why did you play along?”

She shrugged again, “Dunno. Bored, I guess. Thought it’d be funny ‘cause you were probly e’cpetin an old granny or somethin to pick up. So better luck tomorrow, I guess.”

“Would you pick up the phone tomorrow if I tried to scam you again?”

Her brow furrowed, her tired mind not quite making sense of the question.

“Uh no, probably not. I mean, I guess you could try? Like, it’s your life, can’t tell you what to do. But like, if you do, you need to make it better.”

He gave a quiet laugh and she couldn’t help but smile along with it, “I thought you just said that you couldn’t tell me what to do, love?”

“Oh. Well consider it a professional recommendation. One con to another or something like that.” Her brow furrowed, something off about her comment, but, “God I’m too tired for this.”

There was another gentle laugh, “Then you best get yourself to bed love. Make sure to drink some water before you go, maybe take a few Advil. Wine can give you an awful headache the morning after.”

“Wine’s not the only thing,” she muttered.

A surprised, delighted laugh jarred her slightly back into higher awareness. “Aye, I’m sure that’s true as well.” He gave another chuckle. “I’ll let you sleep now love. Drink some water. And…” she actually heard him swallow. “Sleep deeply and dream well tonight.”

“That’s an odd turn of phrase.”

“Aye, but I get the feeling that you don’t get either very often, so….. I truly hope you do tonight. Good night love.”

The call ended with a soft click.

Emma pulled her phone away to stare at the now dark screen, before asking the empty air around her, “What the fuck was that?”

While "Two Trucks" (Cicierega, as Lemon Demon, 2013) opens on an a minor chord, the fourth repeat of the lick terminates early, stressing the final chord of the opening lick, F major. It is F major that quickly dominates as the tonal center for the first refrain, and for the work as a whole--or does it? The quite typical I-vi-V-I progression that harmonizes much of the song's development, including every refrain, is convincing evidence that the work is at least partially in F major. Yet, surprisingly, the key signature is all white keys: there is not a single B flat in the entire song.

Although the B natural in the refrain harmonization can be written off as a brief tonicization of C major (especially given the jazzy quality of the chromatic neighbor G#s in the same progression), the opening lick, Am Dm C F, which recurs in most of the verses, maintains ambiguity, since it is a minor, not F, which is metrically accented. Moreover, when Lemon Demon fashions an instrumental after the second verse modelled after the opening chord progression, a theme in the higher voices unequivocally establishes the key as a minor. Even the bridge, which shares a bassline with the refrain, and whose bouncy countermelody beginning on an F should support the overall key, takes on an unusual modal quality when the countermelody not only includes several B naturals, but even outlines an a minor chord in the second line! If anything, the key of the song should be pegged as F Lydian, not F major. (The modal quality of this countermelody, as well as its high register in contrast to much of the song, is evocative of the occasional use of inversion in the symphonic form, although it is not actually an inversion of any previous theme! This supports the bridge's lyric content, where Cicierega "inverts" the content of the refrain.)

Nonetheless, Lemon Demon continues to maintain a deliberate tonal ambiguity until the outro. While conservatory students are often told that accidentals can indicate the practice of raising the seventh degree in minor, the many G#s Cicierega uses in the song are rarely resolved to As, and if Cicierega does resolve them in the expected direction, it is during F major chords. Additionally, while C major is featured heavily throughout the song, invariably resolving to F major, the dominant of a minor is largely missing. The guitar solo appearing above the second and third refrains also includes noodling between Cs and Ds, flirting with d minor even--what would appear to be the "common ground" between the two tonal centers of F major and a minor. And, of course, the singing itself is entirely unpitched for the majority of the song, clarifying no tonal questions whatsoever.

The song, however, takes a turn in the final epic reprise-outro, when a seemingly unimportant E at the conclusion of the refrain bassline catapults the song into a minor, and the as-of-yet nonmelodic singing line finally takes on harmonic context. Lemon Demon sings the refrain lyrics over the opening chord progressions, instead of the original F major, and the clearly a minor theme from the previous instrumental. Although some tonally ambiguous elements persist, such as a descending scale alternating with a D à la "Toccata and Fugue" at the 3:25 mark, the song remains firmly in A minor until it ends--or does it? If the reprise was parallel to the pre-bridge instrumental, in both its unapologetic key of a minor as well as the reuse of the same theme, could not the key fade back to F major at the end of the song just as abruptly as it did between the instrumental and the bridge?

After Cicierega is all sung out, the instrumental fadeout features the unadorned opening lick. As the sound of two engines revving plays, the opening lick, stripped of its tonal context, is just as ambiguous as it was at the beginning of the song. The chords themselves, bare, are a v-i and a V-I in d and F respectively; nothing but the meter suggested a minor--and even that can be affected by a metrical trick, as the opening showed! In the fadeout, the question is left unanswered: never again will any upper voices or metrical accents snap the interpretation one way or another. These two keys, coexisting and melding into one another so easily, are quite possibly symbolic of the titular "two trucks," whose effortless interplay creates something beautiful, that "could bring you to your knees"--that could make "grown men cry."
