Disney's Live-Action Movies are AU

I am an old Disney animated movies fangirl and I'm certainly not as enthused about the live-action movies they have been putting out of the same. (I might have had a different opinion if the live-action movies were actually different stories instead of remakes, tho.)

But despite being "remakes" the few live-action remake movies I have seen make no sense to me: As in, it's like they rewrote a lot of the old lore and plots completely, or didn't understand a lot of the nuances of the old scripts and plots, and that didn't sit well with me at all.

(I mean, OK, there were some changes that didn't miss the plot-point that I liked or were fine with --

(and some that I didn't like at all --

(which a lot of movie-goers and Disney fans also felt like in varying and respective levels, I presume.)

But, I mean, if, after the characters and movies went into the public domain, and other studios re-told/remade them, it would be understandable. Like how a bunch of writers -- old and new -- redo/retell old fairytales. And that's fine, cuz different entities, different creators with little to no access to the original creation process.

But Disney redoing all their own old animated classics into live-action kinda smacks of lazy writing as well as arrogance. And they're not even that good...More like doing well because the movies' old reputation encouraged people to go see it.

But I digress.

What I meant to mainly say is that Disney has twisted their own lore so much with these remakes that now, the only way my plot-concentrated brain can reconcile them at all, is by firmly thinking of the live-action remakes as AU (alternate universe) stories.

To me, the animated movies -- Cinderella, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmations, The Lion King, etc. -- all happened in different alternate universes to the live-action remakes.

Which would also explain a lot of the varying plots and different details -- like additional characters, differences in storylines and character behaviors, and extra details that would not have fit with the original storyline.

Cruella, to me, is a prime example of this.

(It's also about the only Disney live-action remake movie that I actually enjoy, love, and rewatch. <3)

Because you cannot tell me that the Cruella who adopted a dog she found in the trash -- someone who had her mother's (Catherine's) murderer's Dalmations captive (Dalmations who assisted in said murder, no less) but trained those Dalmations to listen to her instead of making a coat out of them, even though a lot of people thought that's what she did anyway -- would actually decide to buy and steal 99 Dalmation puppies just in order to make a coat out of them!

Horace and Jasper had their own dog too, before Cruella joined them with hers. And they treated those dogs like partners, like family. Quite a jump from that to what we saw in the animated 101 Dalmations movie.

I mean, come on. There are evil villain origin stories, and then there are origin stories of anti-heroes or chaotic characters with the potential-to-be-evil but not turning out that way.

And 2021's Cruella, Jasper, and Horace are definitely the latter.

And also- I kinda pride myself on being able to enjoy certain aspects of every villain! ^^; so even if overall they aren't my favourite, I can still have fun writing them/watching them/talking about them!

But... *sigh* there are of course some that I find much harder to enjoy then others 😅 They're f e w, especially in Disney and Pixar, but they exist and they're under the cut ): XD Haha 😅

Maleficent 2014-2019 (why. make her. sympathetic?? Why take her greenness?? I can respect her as a completely different character and au to 1959 but even then, I don't care about her. )

Jafar 2019 (they made him young??? They made him traditionally handsome??? They ruined his voice?? He's not a creeper anymore??? 😰😣 uh uh no this does not spark joy anymore- )

Cruella 2021 (Same issues as Mal. Let my nasty women be nasty, please.)

The Red Queen 2010-2016. (In fact I don't really care about the Red Queen/Queen of Hearts in general. The animated one is cute!! But I still don't really feel anything for her 😅)

I haven't even attempted to watch the new Lion King or Little Mermaid, and I don't see myself doing so, so those versions of Scar and Ursula go here too 😅

There are also other villains who are just plainly not my type- but for some reason or another I can still write for. For example, Dr Facilier does nothing for me but he is a fun villain- so I can still have a good time writing for him! Or both the Sheriff of Nottingham and Judge Frollo- these gentlemen also stir nothing in me, but they are n a s t y and I can use their characters to fulfil my desire to write certain plots I really wanna try out XD Like corrupt judge/man of religion stuff and corrupt law enforcement/wolfman stuff (; Haha XD In this category we also have Maleficent 59, Judge Doom, King Candy, Strombolli, Goob, etc.

Well I am working on my Valentine fic 14 stones of a curse and we (me along with my betas) are working in chap 3. Well I hope I complete this soon. And there is a new one shot called She gave me two hearts.

I prefer working one fic at a time though I spin ideas and keep it in a secret doc.

The recent crazy idea: Kurt as Cruella 2021. He will be a badass character. Of course Blaine will be there. But it would be fun.

Rwrb: not much. After the Valentine fic, I should start working on a rwrb AU fic. I have the idea. I should make an outline then proceed.

so... nobody ever thought of a star wars AU with vader & luke based on cruella (2021)? because I do.

luke skywalker as stella/cruela;

luke skywalker or just luke, is an orphan boy, who used to live in the quiet town of tatooine with his uncles, unfortunately they were killed and luke ended up leaving tatooine after that, never knowing the reason for their death, luke ends up in the city from coruscant, living on the street for a certain period of time before meeting the rascally teenager, han solo and his huge furry dog, chewie

luke is extremely skillful and ends up helping han solo in his daily thefts, soon living with him in the abandoned building, he is fast and small and his youthful appearance is extremely helpful when distracting

but luke has inherited a talent for fashion and sewing, they have a great sense of style and sew the prettiest pieces for the robberies and go unnoticed because of that, posing as rich city kids

he ends up developing a huge passion for sewing and clothing and has the dream of working at Empire, a powerful and extravagant clothing line, under the iron command of Lord Vader, unfortunately, for his life of theft he has no way and only longs for by far, although one day in his 21-year-old, han he gives him a role that is the contract to work in one of the Empire stores, it's the happiest day of his life

it's a janitor job which turns him off a bit but he works hard constantly and tries his best to get his boss to take a look at his drawings it never happens but luke skywalker is not an easy give up

one day, he ends up trying his rock-bottom moment and ends up drinking a whole bottle of liqueur, taken from his hidden boss's liquor cabinet, luke was drunk, and ends up remodeling some pieces, such as the store's main window

luke just didn't know that the next day lord vader would have a meeting with his boss and would end up taking an interest in his work, claiming that 'that window was one of the best things he had seen in over 10 years', it's no surprise when he ends up getting a card and lord vader's assistant piett whispers to him to be in lord vader's shop and office at 5 o'clock in the morning sharp.

before taking on a new mantle and legacy, anakin skywalker was a renowned stylist and a loving husband, who designed the most beautiful and elegant clothes just for his wife, model padmé amidala

the couple were expecting their child, excited and eager for the new addition to their little family (with their two pets, the theerapio golden retriever and their white cat artoo), unfortunately, fate had other plans

padmé amidala mysteriously ends up dying in a car accident, her husband was not present, currently in a meeting with his mentor, sheev palpatine. both the child and the woman were presumed dead.

anakin skywalker blames himself for the event, as well as developing an immense hatred for everything, blaming the papparazi and his closest friend for the tragedy, obi-wan, claiming that he was the one who planned padmé's trip, ending in his death. vader, no longer anakin, shuts down completely and becomes obsessed with wiping out Jedi shops as well as his reputation, in just a few years he's already in charge of the Empire shows, and later inherits the fortune of Palpatine, a fierce stylist and with a thirst for revenge, who creates the most stylish clothes to kill

vader is a stern and suffocating boss, firing all those who annoy him or fail him, the only person who is still under his command after years is piett, the stressed and anxious middle-aged man who cares about his boss but hasn't. courage to say it out loud for fear of being fired

vader's runway shows are always the most critically acclaimed and in his next collection, he plans to put an end to the Jedi brand as well as obi-wan's career.

but the clothes his stylists show him are predictable and uncreative, not a single innovation, leaving him in a constant bad mood for these flaws.

one day, he has a meeting with one of his managers, and when he arrives, a crowd in the window, curious, he decides to observe whatever is causing this mess, and he has no regrets; it's a disorganized and wonderfully creative shop window, used newspapers for clothing and a dress that once should have been hideous, is now a creative and insane work of art, and when his gaze lowers an inch he sees who made this mess; a boy passed out on the floor, a bottle of liquor beside him, and vader already knows what he should do

in what follows, it is an unexpected but highly efficient duo: luke becomes vader's protégé, even under his authoritative command, designing and creating the most elaborate and wonderful pieces for vader, and vader is confident with his new collection, and it ends. enjoying having the boy around, reminding him strangely of him in his youth

luke is ambitious and creative, and ends up learning some things from vader in that time, strangely, a loyalty and mutual respect form between the two

palpatine's manipulations are endless and soon come to the fore — luke ends up meeting obi-wan and learning more about vader and, because of 'a certain point of view', discovers that his father was a stylist and friend of vader, but who had his career destroyed and killed for vader. luke, he was never a vindictive person but the betrayal he feels at that moment is surreal, and he just wants to end his career as a vader on the other side, vader is very familiar and even attached to the boy and orders piett to find out more about him, something telling him to do that; vader has no words to describe how surprised, sad, angry, nervous and happy he feels to know that the boy is his son

vader doesn't tell luke at first, feeling conflicted and keeps it to himself, now luke starts sabotaging vader's clothes and plans, barely noticing that his boss and current secret arch enemy is no longer interested in the parade and seems distracted

at the fundraiser organized by Empire, everything comes to the fore; the secret of Vader's identity, the kinship between luke and vader and the crimes committed by palpatine all while a parade is taking place and sabotage with the alleged crime of vader killing anakin skywalker — and dammit, luke is so confused and scared — and the police are coming and luke has only 20 minutes to reverse everything and not let his father go arrested while his so-called father and kenobi fight at the party as anakin discovers that it was obi-wan who took luke to tatooine

the disaster that was the show will always be remembered in fashion magazines

Disney Superhero AU where Edna Mode makes the costumes for of the heroes, and Cruella De Vil makes the costumes for the villains. And they're arch-rivals, both in their roles and in the industry in general.

Edna incorporates mechanical and textile engineering to make the supersuits, while Cruella works with sorcerer villains to enchant the villain outfits. Since Edna has fairies and wizards as allies, she sometimes gets their magic input as well, although she prefers to be able to make it work by her own merits.

And during their consultations, they each insult the other incessantly.

look, cruella (2021) wasn't perfect, but if "lmao her mom was killed by dalmatians" is your main critism, then it's really not that bad

i do agree, it should've been gayer, grittier, it probably should've had darker themes, some violence, and give the woman some furs for fuck sake! and of course, no. she shouldn't have had a redemtion arc.

but god, it was fun! emma was great (both of them), the costumes were gorgeous, it was shot pretty damn well and i found it enjoyable. let me die on this hill.

I’ll literally never forgive the internet for what its done and is doing to Cruella (2021). The movie is one of the few live-action Disney movies based on an existing IP that is worth anything! It has soul, a bop of a soundtrack, amazing outfits, good writing, comedy, drama, it has it all, but all anyone can focus on in is Cruella’s mother getting pushed off a cliff by Dalmatians, all because a few people saw the movie and decided to lie about that being the reason she hates dalmatians (which she doesn’t btw). Like it makes me livid to see people be like “lol I’m a better writer than those HACKS at Disney” when they haven’t even seen the damn movie! What’s even more tragic is that this truly stupid meme has basically damned the movie to be a meme forever when it deserves so much more. I know in a few years time I’ll remember the movie for its actual content, but ask someone online who hasn’t seen the movie and all they’ll remember is the endless joking about one scene from a movie they haven’t seen. At least I can take solace in that this garbage is just an extremely online opinion

This is just a cute little thing that came to me during work training, and so here we are. Enjoy!

While the knowledge itself that her closest friend was actually the heir to the throne of a small, lovely kingdom in a fairy realm was not surprising at all, the fact that this was revealed to her via unfortunately timed emotional breakdown was.

Yes, she had known that he was eccentric. Yes, she had known he was something a little more than what he seemed, though that could just have been that same eccentricity. And yes, he did avoid certain spices as though they would kill him, but honestly? Allergies. Diet. Both. Not that weird.

The fact that he sometimes seemed to have multiple arms, or was able to weave impossible fabrics was a little unusual, but, you know what? Who was she to judge a little quirk like that? She was far above judging or disliking someone because of such a silly thing. And he was still her dearest friend.

At least until he received… The Letter.

She waltzed into his workshop and was caught off-guard to see the usually flippant and flamboyant Artie was… crying. Weeping, even. Oh, dear.

Something must have been truly wrong because these weren't the exaggerated tears from when his favourite drama characters were having a rough go, or when David Bowie was in town and he missed the chance to snog him.

Artie was genuinely hurt about something, and that simply wouldn’t do.

Some gentle coaxing revealed that his parents were demanding his return for his arranged wedding. And he didn’t want to go back to the place he'd escaped. That place, she learned, being the land of fairies, and his parents being the rulers of a small portion of that land, just to the west of the greater fae lands. He didn't want to be married, he didn't want to marry some girl that would be just as miserable as himself, he didn't want to go home.

"Well, then, darling, don't."

He looked aghast, which, admittedly, was a nicer look than miserable.

"I can't just… not. They'll find me, drag me back, kicking and screaming and making a scene."

She fixed him with that trademark smirk, deliciously wicked and perfectly mad, and he couldn't help smiling a little despite himself.

Two really easy ways to improve Cruella

1. Have her two-tone hair be something she dyes herself as symbolism of transformation and character development.

2. Have the Dalmatians actually hunt her mother and eat her. It’s very grimdark and Disney would never go there today but if you’re absolutely set on making her have a sad Dalmatian-related trauma to explain her hate, it would make more sense than having the dogs knock her off a cliff.
