Fragments from "The Strange Case of the Joker" Essay

AN: These are fragments from my WIP The Strange Case of the Joker, which is a mega-essay (upwards of 10k words) and video-essay series to-be, analyzing the Joker through various political, health-based, and cultural lenses. Some of these are through the lens of queerness, mental illness, and censorship. These selections are not completely successive, and only include material set for the first video essay installment.

The Joker has been Batman’s counterpart since their inception. In the earlier incarnations, Batman was something of a Straight Man to Joker’s slapstick comedy; he’s an archetypal trickster, alternating between malicious ploys, such as bombings, and relatively harmless pranks and theatricality. Ultimately, throughout every iteration, his goal has been to upend the status quo—not necessarily to any moral end, but more out of a need to subject others to the chaos of his own mind and persona. He seeks to reveal the hypocrisies that society attempts to ignore. Joker often uses complex moral dilemmas to psychologically torture and attempt to “out” or “break” Batman and the moral standards Batman models. The core conflict Joker poses for Batman is The Joker’s very life: Batman can either kill Joker and end the Clown’s continued violence (as locking him away has proven ineffectual and unreliable), or he can spare Joker’s life and perpetuate the cycle of Joker’s harm; either way, Batman is committing himself to a break in his own moral code—he is either adding to the cycle of violence and abuse directly by murdering someone, or he is a bystander in the violence perpetuated by that person against others.

The Joker is one of the most quintessential characters in comic history. He is renowned as well as Superman, Marvel’s Spiderman, and Batman himself, and is often atop his fellow villains—usually, metaphorically, of course. Joker has been featured in thousands of comics, as a villain and pseudo-hero at different points. He’s been a driving force in several animated television shows, not the least of which being Mark Hamil’s debut as his voice, Batman: The Animated Series, or the more recent Harley Quinn show, starring his ex. He’s been a main character in at least four video games: the Arkham trilogy, and the Telltale series’ second season, The Enemy Within, where he is ultimately the ending villain, but potentially an anti-hero protagonist.

Unfortunately, Bill Finger, the writer responsible for the first Batman issue (and thus Joker as a character), passed before he was dignified with public recognition for his role in the Batman series and the Joker’s very creation. However, Kane and Robinson have both acknowledged him as their co-creator for the character, and his only obituaries in 1974-5 were in lesser-seen DC publications: Amazing World of DC Comics #1, in which he was credited as “One of the greats of the comic magazine arts” and Famous 1st Edition (Batman #1), as “One of [Batman’s] two real fathers.” Finger has received significant recognition in the age of the internet, with several people claiming DC Comics, or even Bob Kane himself, stole the credit (and thus glory) of Batman and the Joker’s legacies from Finger.

Batman, despite embodying sanity in their dynamic, is stuck in the loop of trying the same thing over and over and expecting something different to happen. He expects Joker to stay in Arkham Asylum, or to “behave” once released. He expects the cycle to end, someday. Almost counterintuitively, at least on the surface, Joker knows what will happen every time. He will do something heinous, he and Batman will fight, Batman will inevitably capture him or he will die, and if Batman captures him, then he’ll escape from wherever he’s imprisoned, and they will repeat this forever, until someone does break.

ok so! first of all here's the site I mentioned (highly suggested, you won't regret the hard work).

then for a small tutorial (I hope I make sense)

The line of action is not the curve of the spine, but the path of the movement of the body. More like a guide of the force and movement of an action. You can use more than one on a single pose of a figure, eg for the torso and for the arms or one for an arm and one for the rest of the body.

First thing you wanna do is find the movement in the pose you wanna create. every pose has movement, even "static" ones like sitting, sleeping etc and even if you're only drawing a bust.

(for this,as with all drawing, the best advice is to observe real life, even before starting practicing drawing poses)

so, step 1: draw a line

the human body mostly moves through S an C shapes, an S shape is good to start with because we are usually starting with a core movement, so the torso is the main character here.

I said that the line of action is not necessary the spine, but it can happen to be similar or close to it as it is our core. just do not let that constrain you.

step 2: head, rib cage and pelvis

using the first line we're placing these three along it and marking what direction they're facing with those cross lines.

you can already see the movement.

step 3: secondary lines of action

be loose and go with the flow! Remember: ACTION FIRST, STRUCTURE SECOND! that means that the anatomy comes after the movement you are trying to depict. build the structure on top of the action.

(of course that does not mean anatomy is less important, they work in tandem, and a better learning of anatomy gives you also a better grasp on portraying movement)

step 4: legs, aka more Lines of action

the line of action is not necessarily a curve, it can also be a straight, and creating a visual contrast using both types makes the pose more interesting.

Of course there isn't a single way to do the same thing

a single line of action (B) would have also worked to start with!

Here's 2 examples of more dynamic poses I drew:

with more dynamic and extreme poses the main line of action is more often a C shape as the body compresses. (objects can have lines of action too! notice donnie's bo and mikey's nunchaku)

As I said, learning anatomy goes hand in hand with practicing poses and lines of action, as you will notice how the single parts of the body move and the way they all have their own intrinsic movement.

To start is useful to take some pictures of people/animals and just draw the lines of action on top. Start with just one line of action and after you've practiced a bit, move on to photos of more complex poses and find the secondary lines.

We're all aware by now that when you buy pride merch from one of Those Companies, your money is just going to a CEO who half-heartedly told someone to slap a rainbow on it and call it a day. So why not use that money to support an actual queer person who’s working hard to make art?

I've collected a(n incomplete) list of queer creatives who would benefit from your support this Pride Month - this is fairly limited in scope, as it only includes creators who responded to my call for links (or whose links were sent by friends & fans). It is also, for that reason, fairly audio-drama-heavy, but not exclusively so! It includes sections for crowdfunds, online stores, ttrpgs, and ko-fis and patreons for creators of a variety of different art forms.

The list is long, but worth a look through. Have a browse, see if anything appeals, and if you'd like to add any links, please do! Share the list around, shout out your friends and peers, boost your favourite artist, and vitally, self-promo is strongly encouraged!

Crowdfund campaigns:

Starting off strong with Forged Bonds @forgedbondspod — A queer, myth-bending audio drama retelling of Aphrodite and Hephaestus's love story.

This one takes pride of place as the inspiration for this post. Pine is working SO hard to make sure their cast gets paid regardless of crowdfunding outcomes, even if that means paying out-of-pocket. Help them avoid having to do that by supporting a truly kind and wonderful creator. (Crowdfund ends in a little over two weeks!)

We've also got a tight time-sensitive crowdfund for Waiting For October @monkeymanproductions — an upcoming queer supernatural audio drama series from the creators of Moonbase Theta, Out.

At the time of posting, they only have 13 hours left on their crowdfund, but they're 93% there! Help them cross the threshold and tell what I'm sure will be another gorgeous and wild story.

And for the horror lovers, a new crowdfund from The Morbid Forest — a deep dive into all things grusesome!

They are hoping to fund their fifth season, and it's looking to be their biggest yet. A lot of what they're asking for will be used to pay guest authors they're bringing in for the new season, allowing platforms for up-and-coming writers. Help them make this a reality!

Now that I no longer cross-post this comic to Instagram, I don't really need to adhere to the 10-panel structure. This update has 12!

I have mixed feelings on the Third Sister. Overall, I think she had a great concept! However, I'm not so sure I was fully satisfied with her execution in the narrative. (Note, I still love the Kenobi show. I just think it has flaws.)

In this interpretation, I wanted to make her more intimidating, but also a force that isn't entirely siding towards good or evil.

She helps Leia both from a feeling of familiarity with the scared young girl, and also a desire to just mess with Vader.

One final note of clarity: The blue text box is Luke.

March 2024 Escher Girls Update and Patreon Thank You!

Hi everybody!

It's a new month, so it's time for a site update and to thank our awesome Patreon subscribers!

First, I've restored more posts that were broken in the move from Tumblr due to being animated gifs or posts/users being deleted/leaving Tumblr before the export, etc... I also reformat all the posts to be easier to read and add image descriptions to all the images.  This month, one of the posts I restored was this great breakdown and redraw by LessTitsNAss of the Superman vol. 3 #9 cover featuring Anguish/Masochist punching Superman while in a boobs and butt pose.  At the time the preview of the cover came out, the character was named Masochist, but I believe she was renamed to Anguish when the comic was actually published, hence why some of the posts still refer to her as Masochist.  I put a combined image of the redraw and breakdown as the image for this post, but if you want to see larger versions of each part, go check out the post!

And I'm continuing to work my way through the Tumblr inbox backlog so old submissions might be showing up.  Due to the way Tumblr piles up everything in descending order of newest first, a lot of the older stuff got buried since I get a lot of submissions, and it takes a while for me to get to it.  I'm really sorry if it's taken this long for your submission to show up. 

I've also been continuing to appeal mistakenly flagged posts by Tumblr's algorithm which can't tell the difference between stuff like a solid coloured body suit and actual nudity (it flagged Johnny Storm as being naked, for instance because he was on fire).  The algorithmic flagging, sudden rule changes, and other controversies, are the reason I host Escher Girls independently as well as cross-posting on Tumblr because then there's an archive of the posts that aren't affected by posts being flagged or removed on Tumblr or if Tumblr goes down or something.

And it's also why I really appreciate everybody who supposed us on Patreon and Ko-Fi. <3  It helps me pay for server costs, upgrades, domain hosting, and other things that help to keep the site going. :)

Aphrodite Intro Pages

Let us delve into the realm of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, known as the Smile-Loving. She is a divine beauty, Her radiance rivaling that of the heavens, yet Her wrath can be as fierce as the sea She was born from. Emerging from the sea froth of Ouranos' castration, She is hailed as the daughter of Zeus. While She may be a minor deity of the sea, particularly associated with sea foam and creatures like tortoises, turtles, and clams, Her influence extends far beyond, shaping numerous myths and narratives as the Goddess of Passion.

These pages will give you a glimpse into my understanding and reverence of Aphrodite. The content, largely drawn from my grimoire, is a testament to my unique perception and worship of this goddess. However, it's important to note that the altar concept, while significant to me, is a conceptual representation and not a direct reflection of my daily worship. So, I need some help. 

About ten hours ago (I’m a little loopy so apologies if this makes little to no sense) I had to go to a dental emergency place due to a toothache that has gotten worse over the past few days. 

Luckily they were able to fix it and I’m still in pain but that’s mainly from all the shit they did with my mouth/tooth. However because I live in America, of course my insurance won’t cover it. 

The bill was over $700, I managed to pay a chunk of it with my savings (which went bye bye) but I still owe $425 dollars.

So, this is me asking for help. Any little bit truly helps as I am still unable to work due to other health issues. 

I have commission's on Ko-fi open, which are 3 dollars for 3,000 word fic. I have a patreon with two different tiers ($1 and $3 dollars respectively). And I also just have a general goal on Ko-fi for help. 

I will also in the next few days be hopping back into trying to do some proofreading for people (fingers crossed that it works this time) as soon as I feel better. 

I really hate that I have to make this post (america’s healthcare system can suck a dick) but I am desperate. Thank you for reading this, just reading it is helping me out, and hopefully my next post will be a fic.

Soundcloud Dilemma - I need your input!

(Yes, this is a sneak peek of the next file to come out. Shhhh.)

I've hit a small snag with my Jockout2 Soundcloud account. That being... I've already run out of space on it, which you'll see above. The limit is quite low, and you plow through it FAST with 30 minute uploads.

Unfortunately, buying a full year of Soundcloud Pro+ (which is the cheapest package available to expand that limit) is about 110 euro... or 120 dollars. And I'm having trouble convincing myself to spend that because... firstly, it's over half of what I've made on commissions to date 😬. And secondly, this is a platform which already deleted my account once before on account of it being NSFW. So there's a chance I'd spend 120~ dollars just to get it nuked again.

I'm not really sure what to do instead of Soundcloud, though. I think it's where a lot of hypnobros go to listen, but I just think most of the hypnotists using it kinda just drop 1-2 files and never touch it again so they don't deal with the limit.

Your answers will help me suss out how worth gambling that 120 dollars would be. Just let me know where you do most of your hypno listening - and if it does turn out to be mainly on Soundcloud, I may make another post geeeently nudging people to drop me a few bucks on Ko-Fi to help me afford the account upgrade, lol. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now, tick the poll/comment below and let me know your listening habits.
