Multi-Blue Granny Square Crochet Maxi-Skirt Update #6
Update 0 | Update 1 | Update 2 | Update 3 | Update 4 | Update 5 | Here
Not much of an update. I haven't touched this project since the last one.
I've been thinking of taking off a couple of rows to make it a shorter skirt. I live in the Caribbean and this skirt is warmer than expected 馃槚 馃敟
While I contemplate that, I'll finally be working on the waistband. I'm going to do it with double crochet and do decreases to bring it to the size of my waist.
Wish me luck, because I'm doing this with no reference whatsoever!

My maternal grandmother could crochet.
Nothing complicated. Basic granny squares and double crochet, but she was the one in the family who made blankets for her kids and grandchildren. Dementia hit in her nineties but she still remembered how to make granny squares and made dozens. I asked her for one last blanket but by that point the dementia had taken how to join the squares. They were stacked in piles around the dining room table and when she went into care, into a plastic box for storage.
When she died, I asked for them. By that point I could crochet but didn't know how to join, and figured, someday, I'd learn.
It's at least a decade later. I'm the one who makes blankets for my nephews, for my cousin's children, for pregnant coworkers. Last year I made seven blankets, three for Project Linus, the rest for family and a friend. I can follow crochet charts, filet crochet, do clusters, fans, basic lace, amigurumi.
The world, as is its wont, is on fire. Tonight, I have opened the plastic container for the first time in a decade. I'm sorting them into piles by color. I know now how to look at them and see where her memory slipped or areas I'll need to repair. There's no printed pattern but if I need more I have the skills to copy the pattern.
Each square is 5 inches. Blanket size for Project Linus is 40x60. I'll see how many people I can give her last crochet legacy to.

Self-taught one work-in-progress at a time so that there鈥檚 some beginner stuff I don鈥檛 know and advanced stuff that I do know and I will forever be making silly beginner mistakes in complex projects that I鈥檒l probably never complete :)

Multi-Blue Granny Square Crochet Maxi-Skirt Update #5
Update 0 | Update 1 | Update 2 | Update 3 | Update 4 | Here | Update 6
Update on my crochet skirt! All granny squares were completed, blocked AND sewn together! And it looks fantastic!
I bought lining fabric for the skirt, but honestly I don't think it will be needed!
What IS needed now though, is to weave in all those ends 馃槹 I also need to make the waistband.
The skirt is the width of my hips (9 squares) so I need to gradually cinch in the waist (there's a word for it in crochet, but it's not coming to mind) I also want to crochet around the bottom edge to 'clean up' the hem.
Still a lot of work, but I can't wait to finish and wear it!

It's a level up, don't get me wrong, but if you can do the thing on the left (crochet a granny square), you can probably figure out the thing on the right (interlocking or double filet crochet).
Then you would have this:
Tumblr media
Here is the entire pattern: (Download the PDF here)
Tumblr media
Every row is illustrated, and it uses a simplified form of notation that's meant to be more like closed captions on a video than anything. It's different, and difference is scary, but you'll be fine.
There are no mid-row colour changes, no cut or carried thread, no bobbins, and exactly four ends to weave in. The PDF includes documentation, border instructions, etc., and there's also a video on that page that I hope to re-record but which should be enough to get you started.

I've got my eye on you...this Kaleidescope Eye Square crochet pattern was written by Forma Tina on Ravelry, who used it in the pictured freehanded sweater. I love the colors used in this sweater, and the way it feels like someone is looking back at me.
Free pattern here.
