Jon being raised by his grandma means that he has old lady hobbies btw.
He enjoys knitting and embroidery, collects flowers to press and frame, grows plants anywhere he can fit them in his flat, is part of a book club (he hates most of the books they read) and a stitch 'n bitch, and he plays solitaire with real cards.
He baked a lot pre-avatar nonsense (that shit is time consuming, even in a nicer AU) and still has his grandmother's cribbage and chess boards and her vintage gramophone, even if he never uses it.
Jon has the spirit of an 80 year old woman and he's okay with that.
#jonathan sims#tma#the magnus archives#thinking about jon passive aggressively embroidering at avatar meet ups#just to show how little he cares about any of the people there#and how annoyed he is at this interrupting his day

Quickfire Piles
My Aunty Sara used to come around to the house a lot after she had gotten into difficulties. Because I was still a girl I didn’t know what these complications were. She’d just be in the living room, one morning, when I went through to the kitchen, and snoring on the couch and smelling of cigarettes and with bottles lying next to her socks and shoes.
Aunty Sara taught me cards. She was nine years older than my mother and didn’t quite look like her at all, which made me wonder whether they were ever sisters. But she liked me. When most adults (or kids) didn’t really like me at all; and that tapped in with a sense of attachment that I needed in girlhood. And it came through Sara teaching me how to play the universal card games.
“Here, girl,” she said to me one day when it was just she and me in the apartment, whilst she had a cigarette in her mouth and she held this rectangular object out to me, “come and let me tell you some important secrets. They’ll help you for the rest of your life.” And she gave me the deck of cards and told me to open it. These cards spilled out. I still remember their iconic red, black and white icons of Clubs; Spades; Hearts; Diamonds. She said, “That mix is the battery of the whole thing. But you can do much more with the characters inside each suit. Now – let’s play some of the games.”
Cribbage & Blackjack & Solitaire & Whist. The time went by real sonic because she played so fast. And she thumped the learning in to me. She was quite the nasty teacher but I liked it, for some reason, like some masochist pleasure … and I began to develop an addiction with the feel of the cards.
And then she moved on to Poker. And alongside Blackjack she began to teach me other things. Further things, rather. She taught me how to anticipate when the other player might fail, considering that you had higher value in your cards. She said that most folk thought it was about luck, but, she said that it was only based on rote learning and the desire for victory. Because we didn’t have coins to play with in regard to Poker we played with macaroni tubes.
I remember the first time I beat her in a Poker game. She smiled, and her eyes flashed. “That’s the way. Keep going with it.”
Despite me liking Sara so much, my father hated her and didn’t want her around. Whenever Sara was out of the house I would hear my mother and father arguing about why she was here. And my father could be especially wrathful when he was angry. Scared me. He claimed that Sara was a degenerate and shouldn’t be here at all, that he didn’t see why she had to be supported here. And then there were other things that were said that I couldn’t understand because I was only a girl.
All the time, either way, I kept playing cards. With my friends; I taught the boys and girls around the neighbourhood. The games. They all thought it was ace. The girls wanted to learn more than the boys, because the boys got sick that I kept beating them; they didn’t like getting beat by a female, and they just left.
Sara managed to find a job. Down at the factory. She wasn’t in the apartment so much, no longer, and when she did get home she looked totally ill from having worked all day. She’d collapse on the couch. And she would still grin at me with warmth when she saw me, but when I asked, “Do you want to play cards, Sara?” she would say she was way too tired, or she couldn’t do it tonight but maybe tomorrow, she was sorry. And often when she got on the couch she would fall asleep within ten minutes. And then wake up at four in the morning. I knew because my bedroom was right next to the living room. And the smell of the cigarettes would wake me up. Or I would hear her talking to herself. Or hear her crying. Then she would leave the building at five in the morning to head to the factory, since she had the earliest shifts.
My father still didn’t want her around. He told my mother that because she was now earning money she could leave and find her own place to stay.
This was when it was approaching Christmas. Mother said that she hadn’t the heart to throw Sara out when it was a festival time. And that made father agree, temporarily, that she kept the couch in the living room. And December drifted through, with the cold air, and the lights across the city, the business, the thrill of becoming, and so on. And then it got to Christmas Eve, finally.
Christmas Eve was here and mother and father were both happy that they didn’t have to work for a week. And neither did Sara. The adults had had food and some drinks and we were all in the living room. Father was actually being nice to Sara for a change. Or, at least: he wasn’t being grumpy or rude to her.
We were listening to music on the tape player. Everything was jovial. And then Sara called,
“Anybody like a game of cards?”
I clapped and said yes. Mother squinted. Father groaned.
“No, I don’t really want a card game.”
“Oh, come on,” Sara said, and she was already unleashing a deck of cards from a box. “We can play a game.”
She shuffled the cards. Mother said, “Okay, sure.” And I clapped again.
Father looked over at Sara. I caught this moment between them. He glared. Her lips opened and her upper yellow bar of teeth showed.
“I fancy a smoke,” father said, and he got up, “but you girls can play for sure.”
He skulked out of the room and went down into the garden to smoke. And my mother, Sara and me got playing a new game of cards … with my Aunt tossing out our share of cards in quickfire piles. I looked up at Sara to try and locate what she was thinking; and she noticed my eyes; and she winked at me with enough nonchalance that mother didn’t notice it. Then we started the game.

these tags are very funny because while i did tag it solitaire, that was after a conscious effort to think of something, because the person i reblogged this from tagged it "cribbage" and so i automatically thought of cribbage at first
reblog and put in the tags what is the first game that comes to your mind when you think of playing cards

Arcane Characters and Games I Think They'd Play [Headcanons]
I planned to make this a bunch of drabbles but got lazy; if there's any you'd like to see in a story, don't hesitate to let me know! please consider reblogging if you enjoyed it, it helps the algorithm <3
Jayce would love to play something simple to pass time; Crazy 8's or checkers are simply but eat spare time up easily. He's not very coordinated, so games such as chess confused him slightly.
Viktor loves games that stimulate the brain, perhaps chess or mancala (my childhood favourite); these games have fairly simple boards and can be resourced easily in the undercity, as well as Piltover.
Caitlyn loves Mahjong! It's the perfect balance between strategy and tension, perfect to play with tea and chatting. If she's not feeling mahjong, billiards or backgammon would probably be her close second.
Silco seems like the type who would play chess between meetings; a whole game might take a day, making moves when he has time, but he enjoys the critical thinking of anticipating the next move. He also enjoys a game of solitaire as a break from paperwork.
Jinx plays more children-oriented games, such as Old Maid, Snap!, and Go Fish! They're simple yet endearing and fun; be careful of her with snap though, she gets a little aggressive
Vi enjoys games that involve aiming or precision. Marbles is her top pick as it's something she regularly played in the Lanes, but she also enjoys Billiards, Table Tennis, and shooting those little paper footballs. Mel prefers brainteasers. She does puzzles that are far more intricate than the norm. She also likes any game where she can bluff or charm, giving her an advantage or even just a little bit of a chuckle when one realizes they've lost yet again.
Ekko doesn't like to admit he plays games, but he would be lying if he said he didn't participate in joys with the younger foundlings within the hideaway. Simple games from stolen cards and items such as Go Fish!, Old Maid, Crazy 8's, pick up sticks and jacks, if he's lucky he'll find enough marbles as well; he finds these amusing and pass harder times with a smile.
Sevika will never say no to poker or blackjack (or any game she can gamble on for that matter). Her cocky aura makes her an interesting opponent to play against. She will gamble, and probably win most times if you aren't perceptive enough.
Heimerdinger is often fairly busy for games, but he doesn't mind the occasional game of Jenga, often opting to leave it on his desk for anyone who might like the challenge of taking a block down without it falling. If he's caught long enough for free time, Cribbage is his go-to; the race-like game is refreshing for energy.
