For @hdcandyheartsfest 's prompt: bouquet Rated: G CW: Deer-Centaur Draco, AU read the sequel here The bouquet in his hands was carefully selected and crafted from all of the wild flowers he'd been able to find in the forest and surrounding meadows. He thought that Draco might appreciate them more than something he'd bought from a store; he knew how Draco felt about anything foreign entering his forest, including him, but he was working on that. Climbing over a fallen log, he sat down in the clearing, knowing that Draco would be along at any moment. He passed by this spot every day on his patrols, or at least, Harry thought he did. He always seemed to find him here. It didn't take very long for the bushes to rattle, as Draco leapt over them, landing gracefully in the sunshine. Harry couldn't be sure, but he thought he had to be some sort of sub-species of centaur. He'd never been any good at science or classifications, but he thought that sounded right. Draco's fur was bright white and gleaming, as he cleared the distance in a few effortless bounds, stopping directly infront of him, while his tail flicked up and down, as if he was agitated. Draco's body was vaguely deer shaped, as it lacked the sheer muscle mass that most horse-centaurs carried, but where he lacked raw power, he made up for in speed and agility. And anyway, Harry thought Draco was closer to a moose in size than a deer, so he wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of his wrath. There was a long bow draped around his chest, with a quiver full of arrows slung over his shoulder. He always carried it with him. Draco had a laurel resting on his head, the bright green leaves sticking out clearly against his pale hair. "I thought I told you not to come here." Draco stamped one cloven hoof into the grass. "You don't listen." "No, I suppose I don't." Draco glanced at the bouquet in his hands, sniffing at the air. "Trying to woo me, are you?" "Maybe. Is it working?" His tail flicked again, as he took a slow, deliberate step forwards, one leg bowed infront of the other. "Depends." "If you're going to be so difficult about it, I don't have to give them to you." Draco reached a hand out. "I'm the one being difficult?" There was a sharp snort. "Give them then." Against his better judgement, he passed the flowers over. Draco inspected the bouquet, using a finger to pry the buds apart, so he could see every flower within it. Once he seemed to be satisfied, he nodded and stuck the bouquet into his quiver, beside the arrows. "It's satisfactory." Coming from Draco, satisfactory was high praise. "Well, thank you." "You really shouldn't keep coming back here." Draco turned, giving him one last, long gaze and what looked a lot like a wink, before he bounded into the distance, disappearing behind the foliage. Harry thought he'd come back tomorrow with another gift.

harry has random (ADORABLE!) photos of a white ferret in his house, but his friends never see it when they come over. they always ask, "where's your ferret?" and harry goes, "huh? oh! i don't have one, i just like having these around. i like ferrets."

draco has random (ADORABLE!) photos of a black cat in his flat. his friends are desperate to meet this mysterious cute black cat, but where is it?? draco shrugs, says, "not mine, he just comes and goes." ok... then why do you have a photo of him on YOUR COUCH??

at draco's house party, ron notices the photos of a seemingly singular animal... reminds him of harry's odd collection... then he sees one of a white ferret chase and tackle a black cat into a cuddle and then it CLICKS. he whips around, a little drunk, shouts, "HARRY JAMES POTTER. YOU'RE DATING DRACO MALFOY..?! HE'S THE FERRET?" he points aggressively at photo. "ARE YOU THIS CAT?"

the party is silent. everyone is staring at ron, and then at drarry, who look so embarrassed. draco clears his throat. "seems like the jig is up potter." harry awkwardly nods. "yes, seems so."

Your post about harry being a lion animagus was so interesting. What are your thoughts on draco's animagus?

Oh thank you! (Post anon is referring to is here). I'm not really sure about my answer here. I don't have as clear an idea as I do about Harry.

My little darry heart kinda likes the idea of a jackal bc they follow after lions and like hang around their kills and often come pretty close to them and aren't intimidated by them (kinda like how unlike most people Draco is never scared of Harry or intimidated by his glares - even when his friends are). Lions also tend to tolerate jackals around their kills a lot more than other scavengers. though sometimes there can be tension between them which kinda mirrors the push and pull of Harry and Draco's relationship. Jackals are also associated with being clever and cunning and know how to look after themselves.

They have a reputation for cowardice too which is actually exaggerated - they defend their territory vigorously and often take on prey much bigger than they are - which kinda parallels how Draco can seem cowardly and self serving but he also is able to rise to the occasion and be brave when he really has to be. Jackals also seemingly don't hunt in packs which kind of mimics Draco's relative isolation. And they have kind've long, pointed features like Draco does. Apparently they also mate for life which I like for drarry reasons and because I think Draco is actually very loyal to the people he truly cares about (refusing to give Harry up at the Manor, being devoted to his parents in book 6 etc.)

The other option for Draco that I can imagine is a wolf. I like this because of the loyalty to his pack inner circle that I mentioned above and because the animagus form represents the inner self and although Draco can seem cowardly and undisciplined he's actually a formidable fighter in his own right (he holds his own in a duel against Harry - who is extremely good at fighting - longer than Voldemort does, and probably could've beaten most other opponents) and can also be very brave when he has to be in defense of those he cares about. Also a wolf is a little nod to the Black side of a heritage (since the Black family crest has dogs on it). Plus I like the aesthetic of him turning into a pale white wolf.

I actually think I like the wolf option a little bit more. Especially because the concept of the "lone wolf" kind've symbolizes how Draco comes into his own and has to look after himself and make his own way in the world. Ultimately he turns his back on his Death Eater ways and his parents to protect Harry at the Manor and decides to forge his own path after the war. So it reflects his intelligence, courage, capability, ferocity, and independence - and also his will to live and how against all odds he is a survivor. But yeah. I like both concepts.

Harry had just finished cooking dinner, when he stepped into the living room to tell Draco, only to find him sprawled out over the couch. He had one arm buried beneath his side, while the other was draped over his face, shielding his eyes from view. His wings were bent at an awkward angle, as they tried to avoid being crushed beneath him or against the cushions of the couch. He looked rather uncomfortable, as one leg was curled up against him, allowing the other to hang over the edge of the couch, his talons twitching, as he slept. Draco always took naps at the most inopportune of times. Still, he didn’t have the heart to wake him, as Draco was starting to snore, and he only snored when he was in a very deep sleep. Although, he was very sure Draco was going to be sore when he finally woke up, as he didn’t think his wings were meant to be in that position for very long. He would have moved them, but he didn’t think he could do so without waking him. There was a blanket lying in a crumpled heap beside the couch, which he assumed Draco had kicked off of himself. He picked it up and draped it over Draco, tucking it around his sides carefully. Draco inhaled sharply, before he mumbled, “No more ice cream.” He couldn’t help but smile, as he pressed a kiss against Draco’s forehead and then left him to sleep.

Draco awakens his creature inheritance on his 14th birthday. It's a great news right?

For him and his housemates? Definitely. For anyone else? They find out pretty fast it is very much not.

As it turns out Draco is a very fierce and very temperamental flying chicken (Veela) who promptly adopted all the Slytherin lower years as his 'chicks'.

He would go into an absolute feral rage if ANY of them were hurt and deal with the preparators with no mercy or whatsoever. Let's also be said that Veelas are very, very vengeful creatures.

So as it should be other houses would learned very quickly that hurting one of the lower year Slytherins are a serious health hazzard (for them) and need to be avoided like the plague if they didn't want a pissed of pureblood or worse... a floff with anger issues and very sharp talons and instant combustion abilities out for their blood.

Why I don't care much about Draco calling Hermione a mudblood

I have stated many times that I don't care much that Draco calls Hermione mudblood across various posts I have written. Now rude Hermione stans will simply say or have simply said I am a misogynist or just a brainless Draco stan and move on feeling morally superior. But I have three very basic reasons why JKR is at fault for me not caring.

Being muggleborne is not a disadvantage

As much as I love Draco, whenever he mocks Ron about his socioeconomic status it bothers me. Partly because I can relate to having a family who financially struggles. But I see how Ron's poverty (the Weasleys should not be poor but that's a different convo) affects him. He gets second-hand clothes. He does not have proper school supplies (eg Charlie's broken wand). He only gets the things he wants when he accomplishes something (getting a broom when he becomes prefect). It has caused him embarrassment. I can probably go on. I feel sorry for Ron.

But how does being muggleborne affect Hermione? Well, there are some cultural concepts she would not know, eg the mudblood slur. However, against all logic, Hermione is the top student even showing up purebloods like Ron who GREW UP in the wizarding world. Besides Draco calling her a mean name, what prejudice does Hermione face?? If anything, she is favoured too much (eg time turners). And then Bella tortures her in book 7...only for Hermione to simply walk it off. After a chandelier fell on her. Wow, I should feel so much sympathy for Hermione! JKR gives me so many feels for Hermione's plight as a muggleborne girl!

I would infer that Hermione's yearning to prove herself with good grades partly stems from being muggleborne but I can't recall if this was an explicit part of her character or something JKR left up to our interpretation. I get the vibe that Hermione was like this even in muggle school.

Muggbleborne discrimination is not the biggest concern

Aside from certain purebloods, the wizarding world treats mugglebornes as regular wizard citizens. There is definitely pureblood favouritism - how the hell is Mr Weasley head of the Muggle Artefacts department over any muggleborne? And JKR is quick to point out muggleborne bigotry. If Lucius or Draco so much as glares at Hermione, we know it.

What's the bigger concern for me is the discrimination that JKR insidiously lets go unchecked. JKR lets her so-called good characters engage in casual bigotry against muggles and magical creatures. She only has one developed muggle family. So any abuse the Dursleys suffer is under the guise of them getting their dues. We see the Order of the Phoenix members have basically no respect for muggles. And it's played as comedy. We see magical creatures have no rights. JKR makes Hermione's elf campaign into a joke. She makes the goblins unpleasant so the readers don't have a bad taste in their mouths when the golden trio betray them.

Hagrid attacks Dudley, a defenceless child, in book 1. Traumatizing this 11-year-old kid for years to come. And the readers are meant to applaud this and/or find this funny.

Compared to the suffering of muggles, Hermione's struggles are nonexistent and hardly worth my time.

It seems to bother Hermione very little

As I mentioned before, Hermione lacked knowledge of certain prejudices. So when Draco called her mudblood, she didn't even know what he meant. And in future interactions, it seems more like an annoyance to Hermione, not something that impacts her self-worth. And that's a good thing! Draco has no power over her! She was never Draco's helpless victim. Good for her! Just because a bully tries to belittle you, it does not mean it has to hurt you.

While that's great for Hermione's mental well-being, it kind of impacts my ability to care too. If Hermione cares little, why should I?

In a nutshell, Draco calling Hermione mudblood means little in the grand scheme of things. It's wrong and Draco should be punished for it (why is Draco not punished for publicly using slurs in a school?). I certainly don't think Draco is in the right for using slurs. But it hardly helps to endear Hermione to me as a reader when it comes to this aspect of Draco's bullying.
