Hey wondering if you could do another Natasha Ross fic. Loved the first you did when I requested. Again I give you full creative liberty because how good you did last time.
Authors note: Ugh, there are no gifs of Natasha Ross. I hate it!! But here you have a slightly different story of Natasha, which doesn't really have much to do with Station 19 and might even be considered as an au? I'm sorry if it doesn't suit your taste- it was the first thing I thought of when I read your request 😊
Summary: Natasha is recruited by a secret government agency to take part in an undercover operation dealing with arson and terrorism in Seattle. You are an investigator, or rather a former soldier, who is assigned to help her.
ᕚ---ᕘ
The smoke rose in thick clouds into the Seattle evening sky and the pungent smell of burnt wood hung in the air. Natasha Ross wiped the sweat from her forehead and took a deep breath. Her muscles burned with exhaustion, but she was glad that they had managed to get the fire under control. The last few hours had been a nightmare, but now that the flames were contained, she could finally relax a little.
"Good job, guys. We did it," Captain Sullivan called, patting Natasha on the shoulder. "Now everyone go back to the station and get the cars back in shape." Natasha nodded exhaustedly and looked at each of her team members. "You heard the captain. You did a great job today, I'm proud of you."
When they got back to the station, she was about to go to her locker when she noticed someone standing at the entrance to the fire station. An older man in a tailored gray suit.
"Ross?" The man's voice was firm and authoritative, his serious gaze directed strictly at Natasha. She raised her eyebrows and walked towards him with slow and careful steps. "Yes, I'm Natasha Ross. Can I help you?"
"My name is Alex Carter,“ the man pulled out an older ID card holder and showed Natasha his Homeland Security badge. "I need to speak to you. Urgently."
Her heart immediately started beating faster and her palms began to sweat. What could a Department of Homeland Security agent want from her? "What is it about, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Not here. Follow me, please." Alex Carter turned around without another word and led Natasha to a black SUV parked not too far from the station. Natasha hesitated for a moment, but then decided to follow the request. She couldn't deny that the situation had piqued her curiosity.
There was a tense silence inside the vehicle until they finally reached a nondescript office building on the outskirts of the city. The agent led Natasha through a labyrinth of corridors and security gates until they finally arrived in a small conference room. The room was sparsely furnished, with only a table and a few chairs. On the walls hung various old maps of the whole of Seattle with red circles on them and photos of various fire sites.
"Sit down, Ross," Carter said coldly and closed the door behind him. "What I'm about to tell you is strictly confidential and must not leave this building. You are bound to secrecy."
Natasha sat down and looked expectantly at the agent while resting her hands on the wooden table. "Okay, I'm listening."
"There have been a number of arsons in Seattle over the last few months," Carter began, laying an open file on the table that contained the same pictures that were on the corkboards. "These fires were not accidental. We have evidence that they are the work of an organized terrorist cell."
Natasha frowned and couldn't help but grunt. "With all due respect, but what do I have to do with this?"
Alex Carter leaned forward and straddled the table, his hands gripping it tightly as he looked Natasha straight in the eyes. "We know that you have demonstrated exceptional firefighting skills during your time with the fire department. Additionally, you were previously part of a special task force in the Marines. Your experience and skills make you the perfect candidate for a covert operation."
Natasha felt her pulse rate exceed normal. She had left her time in the Marines more than a decade ago and vowed never again to be involved in such dangerous missions that could drag her and her family into the abyss. "You want me to go undercover?" she asked incredulously and the agent nodded with a straight face. "Exactly. We have reason to believe that the terrorist cell is planning to carry out a large-scale attack in Seattle. We need someone who can infiltrate their structures and gather information. Someone who is inconspicuous and competent. And that's where you come into the game."
Natasha leaned back in her chair and took a deep breath. Her leg was shaking nervously under the table. "I don't know... I've left that world behind me." She spoke in a whisper. "I understand," Alex Carter said calmly. "But remember that your skills and knowledge are needed now. You could save countless lives."
The fire chief was silent for a moment. The idea of returning to a world full of danger and uncertainty was frightening. But the thought that she could actually make a difference and put a stop to it made her hesitate. "Who is my contact?" she finally asked, determined to help.
A slight smile, the first since the meeting, crossed Carter's face. "Your old comrade, y/n y/l/n. She now works for Homeland Security and will be your partner on this mission." Natasha's eyes widened, her pupils dilating to the maximum. "Y/n y/l/n? I thought she had quit her service."
"After her time in the military, she decided to pursue a career in the secret service," he explained quickly, getting back to the important topic. "She will be your main contact and will provide you with all the information you need."
She took a deep breath and finally nodded. They hadn't seen or heard from each other for years. Contact was lost shortly after she herself had quit the service and started a new career as a firefighter. "Okay. What do I have to do?"
ᕚ---ᕘ
Two weeks had passed since you and Natasha had gone undercover. You had integrated yourself into the structures of the terrorist cell, got used to your new identities and put your lives on the line every day. The fine balance between your roles as firefighter and Homeland Security agent was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. But you both knew that any carelessness could blow your cover.
Inside the building, chaos reigned. Flames were blazing from the walls and the sound of crackling wood and collapsing structures filled the air. Natasha knelt behind a stack of boxes and observed the scene. She could feel the adrenaline flowing through her veins as she waited for the operation to begin.
"Are you alright, 'tash?" Your concerned voice came through the piece of technology in her ear, clear and precise. You were on the other side of the hall, monitoring the operation from a safe distance. "Yes, everything is fine," she whispered back and took a deep breath. "I'm ready."
The task was clear: infiltrate the group responsible for the arsons, gather information and prevent their next major attack. But that also meant that you were both in constant danger and your every move had to be carefully coordinated so as not to attract attention or worse.
Natasha forced herself to remain calm as she heard the hall door being pushed open. Several more figures entered, including her first target: a man named Victor Delgado, the right-hand man of the head of the terrorist unit.
"Guys, have you prepared everything?" Delgado asked in a sharp voice. He was tall, muscular, and exuded a menacing presence. "Yes, sir," a younger man answered nervously, probably a new follower, since you had never seen him before. "The fire will spread quickly, as planned. We made sure of that."
The fire chief pressed herself even deeper into the shadows, waiting for the signal from you. She knew you only had one chance to overpower Delgado and his men without anyone getting hurt, and to get him to talk at the headquarters.
"Now!" you whispered into her earpiece, and Natasha jumped out of her hiding place, her borrowed Homeland Security gun drawn. "Don't move!" she shouted loudly, aiming directly at Delgado. "Homeland Security!"
For a moment, time seemed to stand still for her, then more chaos broke out. Delgado reached for his own weapon, but you were faster. A precise shot from your hidden position hit him in the shoulder, and he fell to the ground. The other men also drew their weapons, but you were both prepared. A heavy exchange of fire broke out, and Natasha felt the wave of adrenaline hit her.
When everything went quiet again and the men were lying on the ground all around you, you stormed towards Delgado and overpowered him. "Get down on the ground! It's over for you."
While the two of you, with backup, arrested and secured the men, Natasha felt a rush of relief. But this calm was short-lived, she knew that this was only a small victory in a much bigger game.
Four hours later, Natasha was sitting in a safe house that Homeland Security had prepared for the two of you. The room was spartan but functional. She had sat down on the sofa, exhausted, and rubbed her eyes. But she couldn't go to sleep yet. She was waiting anxiously for you to come back and for news that she hoped you could squeeze out of Delgado.
When a key turned in the lock of the old door and the squeaky wood sprang open, she was suddenly wide awake again and stood on her feet, nervously walking towards you. "Have you found out anything?"
You nodded, also tired, and kicked your shoes off your feet. "I have a name: Thao Lord. He is the real mastermind behind the attacks. We have to catch him tomorrow night, otherwise the whole of Seattle will burn down."
Natasha felt the nervousness fading from her body. Finally you had a name, a goal. But the danger was far from over and a return to her old life was not yet done.
"Delgado was just a small cog in the machine. This Lord is far worse than we had imagined," you said, sitting down next to Natasha, that meanwhile haf sat back down. She leaned back and nodded as she sipped her wine glass. "Probably. But we took an important step today."
"You were great out there today. Like old times, huh?" you finally said after a moment of silence, looking at her with a soft smile. "I knew I had chosen the right one with you when we were looking for someone suitable for this mission."
Natasha felt the surprise overcoming her, her eyes widening. "You... chose me? I thought this was Carter's idea."
Another silence fell, heavy and full of unspoken words. "We should rest," you finally whispered and stood up. "Tomorrow will be a long day."
Natasha nodded silently and watched you go to your room. She sighed and leaned back again, her mind racing. Why were you still thinking about her after all these years? Why did you choose her when you could have chosen any other chief from all the fire departments in Seattle?"
ᕚ---ᕘ
The following night there was a tense silence as you and Natasha approached the spot where Thao Lord was supposed to meet Delgado. An abandoned industrial building on the outskirts of the city, similar to the one where you had confronted Delgado. This time, however, you knew it was all or nothing.
"Are you ready?" Natasha asked quietly, looking at you. You nodded, your eyes sparkling with determination as a smile spread across your lips. "I'm always ready, 'tash. You know that."
With a mischievous wink, you began to move silently through the shadows until you both reached the building. She hesitantly opened the heavy door, trying not to make a sound, and you entered the interior a few seconds later. There was an eerie silence inside, only interrupted by the occasional drip of water from the leaky pipes.
"Thao Lord must be here somewhere," you whispered, holding your weapon ready to fire. "We have to be careful, it's too confusing."
You made your way through the dark corridors, always on guard. Natasha could hear her heart pounding in her chest as she prepared for the unexpected. Finally, you reached a large room with a table in the middle, loaded with explosives and plans of the city.
Suddenly you heard footsteps and quickly ducked behind a wall as a man with graying hair and cold, calculating eyes approached the table - Thao Lord.
"Everything is ready," he said firmly to himself and laughed. "Tonight Seattle will go up in flames and destroy everything that needs to be destroyed."
Natasha felt her blood boiling. She had to stop him before he could put his plan into action. She exchanged a brief but determined look with you, then you both nodded at each other. It was time to act.
"Homeland Security! Hands up!" Natasha shouted, staying in cover and keeping her gun pointed at Lord. "Nothing is going to blow up here! The only thing that will happen is that you'll see the inside of a cell."
Lord laughed coldly and fired wildly. "You think you can stop me? You're just two women against an entire organization!"
But you and Natasha were not intimidated. You fought with all your strength and skill, and finally you managed to overpower Thao. He lay on the ground, his hands handcuffed, and she stepped closer to him. "You lost," she said in a firm voice. "Seattle is safe. Delgado ratted you out."
Thao Lord looked up with hate-filled eyes and a brief, cold shiver ran down her spine. "This isn't over yet." Natasha ignored his words and helped you get him to his feet before you both made your way to the headquarters.
The night passed quickly and the next morning you and Natasha were sitting in a small cafe, away from the hectic city. The case was closed, Lord and his men were behind bars, and the danger to Seattle had been averted. In the quiet moments after the storm, you could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"I'm glad it's all over," said Natasha, taking a sip of her coffee. "It was a tough time that somehow reminded me a lot of the Marines and I'm honestly glad to be back with my team."
You nodded and looked her deep in the eyes. "Yes, it was. But I'm also glad that we got through it together. I couldn't have imagined a better partner for this case."
There was a moment of silence, and the fire chief could practically feel the depth of it. "Y/n, I want you to know how much what we have achieved together means to me," she said quietly and you smiled, gently running your finger along the rim of your coffee cup. "And not only that. I also realized how much you mean to me and how much I have missed you all these years."
"I feel the same way. You became my friend again so quickly. If not more... and that in such a short time even though the distance has separated us for so long."
Natasha felt a wave of joy as she took your hand and squeezed it tightly. "I want us to keep in touch. Let's see where this leads."
You nodded and squeezed her hand once too. "Yes, let's do that. Together." you said and in that moment you knew that you could get through anything together, like in your previous life. The danger was averted and a future full of possibilities and further collaborations lay ahead of you. You and Natasha had found each other not only as partners but also as friends, and nothing could separate you again.

Le Crookie 🥐🍪
It was 3 February when the queues started forming at Boulangerie Louvard in Paris. Even in the sort of downpour that usually empties streets, clued-up teenagers gathered outside the family-run bakery in the 9th arrondissement, desperate to get their hands on one thing: its owner Stéphane Louvard’s invention, le crookie.
It’s a crisp croissant filled with American-style cookie dough, then baked to achieve a soft, gooey centre, and a video of the Frankensteined pastry had gone viral on TikTok.
Arriving a decade after the New York-based French pastry chef Dominique Ansel revealed the recipe for his cronut, the crookie is the latest in a long line of hybrid croissant offerings to cause international fervour. “We were very surprised,” says Louvard, who now sells up to 2,200 crookies per day. “We had to hire two additional people to be able to produce the necessary quantities. It was a little stressful.”
Bakeries across Paris have now started selling them. “My local is doing it, even though it’s not very trendy at all,” says Houssine Bouchama, director of Time Out Paris. Meanwhile, from Singapore to Toronto, copycats are making their own versions. Cookie Crumble, a micro-bakery in London, has been getting orders from across the country. Rhiain Gordon, founder of Babyfaced Baker in Edinburgh tells me it’s “unusual to see any left by 10am”.
To say that cross-bred takes on classic breakfast pastries have captured public imagination is an understatement. In 2013, when Ansel first brought the cronut, with its glazed doughnut outside and flaky pastry inside, to New York, they sold out so quickly that a black market arose on advertising website Craigslist. By the time it landed in the UK in 2016, it was with so much fanfare that Londoners skipped work to try it.
A muffin-croissant hybrid, the cruffin, was next, causing such a stir at Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in San Francisco that in 2015 the recipe was reportedly stolen. Then came the croloaf (croissant dough baked in a bread tin, debuted by M&S in 2016). There have been tacros (pulled pork filled taco-shaped croissants created by San Francisco’s Vive La Tarte) and cretzels (salted pretzels made with croissant dough, by Seattle’s Coyle’s Bakeshop).
Since the global launch of TikTok in 2017, the appetite for these hybrid snacks has accelerated. In 2022, the suprême – a spiral of croissant dough stuffed with the pastry creme-filling of an Italian bomboloni doughnut – became a global sensation. Next came the croffle; croissant dough pressed in a waffle machine, popularised in South Korea by cafe chain Aufglet.
What is it about hybrid croissants that have captured global public imagination for so long? Meg Palmer, a research manager at market research agency Verve, thinks it’s because “there’s something about the merging that makes it more permissible to be indulgent”.
Pastries are also perfect for TikTok, she explains, because they look and sound great. “[In videos of] the crookie you see hands breaking through the croissant. You hear that initial crunch, and you see whether it’s got filling if it oozes out. It’s very sensorial.”
She ties the constant invention of hybrids to small businesses trying to stand out on social media. “They’re always thinking ‘what can be our hook?’ People do latch on to these trends, and they don’t just want a flat white and a croissant any more.”
Bouchama has seen the impact of this in Paris. “There’s an Americanisation of French patisserie going on; the desire to reach an international audience on TikTok,” he says.
Bakery Philippe Conticini in Islington is London’s main purveyor of novelty croissants. The chain launched in London in 2020 with classic French patisserie, but found it hard to survive.
“We’ve found we have to be creative all the time and follow the trends,” says Ludovic Carassi Del Villar, operations manager. The shop soft-launched its £5.90 crookie last week and is already getting calls demanding more.
Back in Paris, TikTokers are already moving on, says Bouchama: “Some bakeries are now experimenting with the pain au chocolat-brownie.”

After talking to @eddis-not-eeddis about Korean music, I thought I'd put together a list of Korean music that carried me through the last years of high school/first year uni :)
I listened to mostly kpop (and some r&b/indie/rap/alternative/pop rock) near the end of high school, but it became too tiring to listen to, and I became more interested in other genres of Korean music. I've linked a few of my favourite albums below, but most of those artistts have grown in name and (relative) fame since I began listening to them. Here are a a few more recommendations (some of which are smaller/lesser known artists, some of which have big presences in the industry):
Acoustic indie: OKDAL, Han All, Kim Na Young, Standing Egg, Lucid Fall, Sugarbowl, J Rabbit, Urban Zakapa
R&B: Zion.T, Zico, HYUKOH, Heize, GSoul, Ra.D, Crush, DEAN
Ballads: Ji Jin Seok, Park Hyo-shin, Jeong Sewoon, Kim Jin-ah, ONEW, Jung Seung Hwan, Paul Kim
Bands: Martin Smith, LUCY (they have a VIOLINIST !!!), The Rose
Indiepop/pop artists who branched out to different genres: Minseo, Chen, AILEE, BOL4, Sandeul, ONEW, Jonghyun, Monogram, Roy Kim, Lee Hi
Sam Kim's Sun and Moon was THE album of the year in grade 12. Every single track on this album is memorable. Sam Kim (from Seattle!) is signed under Antenna Music, whose other artists are worth checking out, too, if you're interested in unconventional, unique indie music (Antenna's whole brand is letting the artists explore their own tastes and interests; it's a whole agency of singer-songwriters). Sam Kim himself is an excellent guitarist, and likes to dabble every once in a while in other genres (r&b, ballads, pop) and has performed singles for k-drama soundtracks in the past. First song rec: It's You for a relaxed indiepop sound, NO SENSE from his album I AM SAM for a demonstration of his guitar picking style.
Lee Jin-ah is also at Antenna Music. When she arrived on the music scene with her voice and her piano, even big names like JYP (which is one of the "Big Three" pop music companies) were scrambling to offer her a contract. Her jazz piano background brings something very distinctive to the Korean music industry; she combines that with r&b and bubblegum pop influences, which is a really interesting contrast with her light, airy, fairy-like voice :) First song rec: RANDOM (a good intro to her eclectic style), Let's Go Camping (a slower acoustic/piano track that displays her whimsical sound in a softer way).
Eddy Kim's acoustic stuff is pretty good easy listening. I listened to his music constantly in high school. He's less experimental in his music style than Sam Kim, for example, but when he sticks to his brand (guy with guitar and a regular percussive beat) he comes up with some really good music. First song rec: 2 years apart or The Manual
AKMU (Akdong Musician) is probably the only big name company musician I still follow/listen to. They signed with JYP when they were in their mid-teens -- JYP is the only one among the Big Three companies that branches out from mainstream pop the most. AKMU is a brother-sister duo that creates quirky, whimsical indie-pop music with a very distinctive sound (they often sing together; the sister is an incredible vocalist and the brother is the one who composes and produces). More recent music has either gone electro-pop or acoustic based indie. I've added two albums here (one from their teenage years, one more recent) as a nice comparison. You can hear how their style has changed over the years! First song rec: How People Move (a funky, energetic title track), Time and Fallen Leaves (ballad), Last Goodbye (they incorporated a familiar classical music song into this in a very creative way)
Last of all, someone who technically is part of the pop scene in Korea, but whose sound is more memorable to me. IU's charm is the versatility in her voice; she's experimented with many genres in her extensive career (she was a child star). Musical theatre, jazz, singsong rap, ballads, bubblegum pop, electropop, indiepop, acoustic indie, alternative....... she's literally done it all (well. Aside from rock, metal, and traditional folk music). LILAC is one of her more recent albums (for a more acoustic indie sound, I'd recommend Palette). First song rec: LILAC (this is a pretty good example of the unique things she brings to the kpop scene: a theatrical, refreshing sound), My sea (a kdrama OST-style ballad that demonstrates her vocal ability and range), Through the Night from her Palette album (soft relaxing acoustic song)

Stealing time between cow hides being wheeled in and out, Black Dog Otis banged through 11 songs in two days. Leather Factory is six guys tearing apart the blues and restitching them together with punk, garage and country threads.
Those six guys are former pawn shop employees, bar bouncers and hand models, current archeologists, creative directors, designers and satellite installers. Guys who used to play over 200 shows a year, been in dozens of bands from Seattle to Pittsburgh and recognized routinely on the CTA in Chicago as, “That one guy in that one loud country band.”
This is Black Dog Otis. A band that’s every bit Louisville. Not quite midwestern. Not quite southern. And of course, not quite sober.
Ideas at 3 a.m. rarely ever work. Ideas at 3 a.m. after a pint of bourbon, well, those are the ideas that should’ve been put to bed before the bottle came off the shelf. Black Dog Otis is one of those ideas – a band built almost backwards. Guitars? We have three of them, but every song was built from bass riffs. Play some gigs and then record? Why do that when you can send rough, out of time bass demos to five friends who’ve played in various bands for over 20 years.
Our album, Leather Factory was recorded in, you guessed it, a leather factory. Really. Between piles of cow hides, we hooked up guitars and mics and cables to a laptop that was “borrowed” from an out of business ad agency. In two days, we had 11 songs.
Members are: · Gene Brock – Lead guitarist and Kentucky institution. · Tony Feltner – Co-lead guitarist and the glue holding this all together. · Brian Crimmins – Co-co-lead guitarist and producer extraordinaire. · Brian Hughes – Vocals, harp and West Virginia’s second favorite son. · Ashleigh Bills – Bass and Casio PT1. · Keith Raines – Drums, air piano and bringer of thunder.

Creating Lasting Impressions: By providing unique and engaging experiences, activation agencies ensure that consumers remember the brand long after the initial interaction. This lasting impression can lead to increased brand recognition and loyalty.
Measurable Outcomes: Activation campaigns often include clear metrics for success, such as event attendance, social media engagement, or product trials. This allows brands to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns and make data-driven decisions for future strategies.

addition by user mae (@/atfruitbat) from Cohost:
Yeah. This reminded me (again) of the talk by Achimostawinan Games on Growing Indigenous Worlds in Games...
... in last month's Game Devs of Color Expo. The setting of their game, "Hill Agency: Purity Decay", is in the future, in one of the last cities remaining in North America that has been reapproriated by Indigenous people. They said they had some criticisms about the city setting: people wanted to know why they were using present day-style buildings, rather than a longhouse. Because a longhouse would fit the idea that some people have, that the aesthetics are primarily what codes it as Indigenous. But as the devs pointed out, Indigenous people would be reusing all the perfectly sound buildings that were still standing there!
"What's the point of tearing down anything if these are perfectly good, beautiful houses? [...]."
As quoted in this writeup.
And, this fits the idea of a flattened view of cultural representation:
"[Incidentally] when an Indigenous person does not make something, you'll know because there's an excess of Indigenous signifiers."
Esquivel noted the fictional Akomish Longhouse from Insomniac Games' 2014 title Infamous Second Son. The closest proximity to that is the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center in Seattle. However, they noted the location in-game looks more similar to a Las Vegas attraction instead of the non-descript modern-day building that belongs to the Duwamish. Bryne explained this is similar to making a racist Wild West show.
As Indigenous creators, Byrne said there is a dichotomy for the creative work they would like to do and what is more palatable to potential supporters for their game projects.
They explain, "You don't have a market that expects [non-stereotypical work], and we've had this conversation come up with funders; there is a push on Indigenous creatives to go that direction [of stereotypical work]."
Signifiers or aesthetics alone tend to be what outsiders conflate with culture. But usually people inside the culture can tell when something is superficially applied, when it approaches stereotyping. Or when it's there to sell something to people that is about you, but not made for you. All the signifiers might be there, but what are they grounded in? What do they actually mean?
The point above:
"is this temple actually a place of worship or is it just a set piece for a goddang Indiana jones booby trap action fight sequence"
is spot on, and it also mirrors this point in a piece by Daniel José Older that I often go back to, on writing the Other and the Self:
"Ritual ≠ spectacle.
I recently edited Long Hidden, an anthology of speculative fiction from the margins of history. My co-editor Rose Fox and I received a number of submissions that had no speculative element at all but featured non-Christian ceremonies. Other people's cultures/beliefs are not fantasy. It's one thing if a demigod or spirit is out walking around, interacting with the world, and even that walks a complex line, but to have people simply celebrating their beliefs be a "fantastical" element is racist cultural imperialism.
Further things other people's cultures are not: a circus act, a freak show, a music video prop, a kitschy household accoutrement, a Halloween costume, a stand-in for having your own sense of self.
[...]
In her breathtaking essay "Is Paris Burning?" bell hooks writes: "Ritual is that ceremonial act that carries with it meaning … beyond what appears, while spectacle functions primarily as entertaining dramatic display. … those elements of a given ritual that are empowering and subversive may not be readily visible to an outsider looking in. Hence it is easy for white observers to depict black rituals as spectacle." Later, hooks discusses how the documentary Paris Is Burning reinforces this dehumanizing depiction of spectacle over ritual when one of the people depicted in the film is murdered: "Having served the purpose of spectacle, the film abandons him/her … There are no scenes of grief. To put it crassly, her dying is upstaged by spectacle. Death is not entertaining."
It will feel pretty obvious to people inside a culture when their culture is reduced to set dressing, or used mainly as sensationalist fodder for people outside the culture. It will feel a certain way when the main knowledge that is being presented of your culture is as if it's been flattened out into aesthetics alone.
When there's a scarcity of representation overall, then there is this ambivalent feeling of, like, yeah, I know this is stereotyping, but maybe it's the closest I can get to seeing something like myself or my life, in mainstream media. But I could wish for a better world, where that kind of media is easier to leave behind because there are also other resonant pieces of media made by own voices, or by thoughtful people who don't just want to say something facile about you, but who want to speak to you, to your sense of the world too.
Thinking about Disney and how we talk about Cultural Representation
(concept art by Scott Watanabe)
Old essay originally written on Cohost in November 2023. With additions.
With all the promo stuff about Disney's upcoming animated film Wish, I can't help but think about Raya and the Last Dragon again. I spent a year intensively researching things about that movie and the discourse surrounding it for a series of videos on Xiran Jay Zhao's channel, and oh boy did that reveal a lot about the current way we talk about cultural representation in casual media criticism.
Lately we've grown a habit of looking at signifiers to culture, things like a cultural dish, a nod to a martial arts style, a piece of clothing, maybe a hairstyle, a weapon and so on, and then projecting a bunch of intentions onto the work regardless of authorial intent. I witnessed this a bunch of times in discussions surrounding Raya and the Last Dragon.
You basically get a bunch of 4d chess-style justifications for the lazy implementation of culture in Raya.
random examples cuz there's too many to name:
The movie will do something like make the leaders of the villain nation women, and people immediately assumed it was some kind of bespoke reference to Minangkabau matriarchical society.
the art book of Raya specifically stated that they purposely misplaced things as a stylistic fantasy choice "we could take something that is known and place it in an unexpected location, like coral in the desert and cacti in the snow". But when people saw a water buffalo placed in the desert they assumed it was some super clever environmental story decision.
The movie will tell you it includes things like Borobudur, Angkor wat, Keris, and most people will take their word for it without hesitation. Never mind that Southeast Asians could barely recognize these nods to our culture through how amalgamated the designs are.
(early concept art by Scott Watanabe)
Moving forward, I think we need to talk less about "what" parts of a culture are being represented in these movies, and more about HOW they're being included, we need to ask:
What is this piece of media's relationship with the cultures it represents?
Because Raya and the Last Dragon is not a cultural movie, it's a monolith film pitched and written by white people and a Mexican director with 2 SEA writers added later in production to avoid backlash. Culture serves the purpose of aesthetic set dressing in the film, as opposed to something that informs its themes and characters.
it wasn't even initially pitched as a Southeast Asian movie. The white writers who pitched it were going for a vague East Asian sci fi fantasy story under the working title "Dragon Empire". Southeast Asian culture was an aesthetic change added much later.
This is what happens when a corporation tries to put representational value on a shallow aesthetic. Because of the way Disney constantly marketed Raya as this big authentic cultural film, it primes its audience to read cultural intention in the most benign details. And when we get lost in the details, we lose sight of the bigger picture.
Contextualizing Cultural media criticism
(visual development art by April Liu)
We need to start demanding more context in our analysis. The next time we see a reference to culture in media we consume, take a step back and ask what purpose it serves in the narrative. And most importantly!! What Is Its Relationship With The Culture It Represents? We shouldn't just accept things at face value.
start asking yourself,
through what lens is this cultural dish and its spicy flavors being presented to us? Are the customs surrounding the food being respected?
If martial arts or dance is represented, how is it translated in the adaptation? Are you getting generic hollywood-fu or are you seeing specific movements with purpose and motivation? Are the philosophies or spiritual contexts of these traditions present in the text?
Are the clothing, hairstyles, and presentation of the characters being de-yassified through a colonial filter? Is the non-conformity of the cultures' different framework for gender presentation being adjusted to fit a more recognizable binary?
If language is present, what role does it serve? Is it presented as other through being exclusively used by villainous beings? Is it being made a monolith as one "non-English" language?
is this temple actually a place of worship or is it just a set piece for a goddang Indiana jones booby trap action fight sequence
This way, instead of unquestionably defending a piece of media because a character wore a traditional outfit one time, or because some characters took their shoes off at a temple, or because there were Arnis sticks in that one fight scene, we can approach the text with a more nuanced and holistic understanding of how culture informs narrative.
To quote Haunani K. Trask (author of From A Native Daughter):
“Cultural people have to become political… Our culture can’t just be ornamental and recreational. That’s what Waikiki is. Our culture has to be the core of our resistance. The core of our anger. The core of our mana. That’s what culture is for.”
