hidgens backstory oh my fucking god. what the hell this man has suffered more than jesus
the songs are amazing I wasn’t expecting to want to buy the album but now I actually need it their vocals are all SO GOOD mariah bryce and kim are absolutely incredible
bill and ted are on a date and you cannot convince me otherwise (I am delusional). also I love that ted loved it bc he was fucking INTO IT in tgwdlm

EXCUSE ME WHO ARE YOU
I love the detail that paul didn’t want to go with bill lmfao
ted got brutally murdered again. I knew they would do it but it’s still hilarious

grace just cannot do anything without discovering her passion for violent murder and lethal weapons and honestly girlboss
“our wet sinewy bodies” “I just came”
UP TO MY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS
hidgens’ death scene was absolutely stunning oh my god
the fact that richie and grace went together to support ruth?? so cute to me. this obviously isn’t in the npmd timeline so it’s just adorable to me that they actually became friends in this timeline, I’m obsessed.
also they had an opportunity for pete and steph and tom and becky to be there on dates but OH WELL
THE ZOMBIES WERE TERRIFYING. OH MY GOD I AM LOSING MY MIND OVER HOW AMAZING THAT SCENE WAS THE MAKEUP THE VOICE EFFECTS I JUST I C CN AHSNJDJSKUDEJ
ALSO THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY REALLY ARE GHOSTS OR IF HIDGENS IS JUST CRAZY AND HALLUCINATING OR IF THEY’RE DEMONS IN DISGUISE AND “CHAD” IS A LORD IN BLACK OR A DIFFERENT BEING OR WHAT LIKE YOU HAVE NO IDEA. OPEN-TO-INTERPRETATION PLOT POINTS YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS

Today's compilation:
Old School 1993 Funk / Hip Hop / Electro
I think what's most striking about this very dope collection of mostly 80s party jams is that, when this album was originally released in 1993, people were *already* referring to this music as being representative of the "old school." I mean, the latest song on this thing is Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's 1988 classic, "It Takes Two," and while that's universally regarded as a hands-down old school party-rap standard today, it's wild to think that people were willing to call it "old school" *just five years after* it first came out. Like, imagine considering literally any song from 2018 old school right now?! Crazy, right?
But this fantastic release seems to have already known the deal: three years after the 80s had ended, and still to this day, we were going to refer to a lot of that decade's output as definitively old school. And the brass at Thump Records were clearly proven right by this notion, because, even in these current 2020s, we still refer to this album's overall sound—that electro-synthy-fat keyboard bassline-post-disco-boogie-funk stuff—as 100% old school; not much of the material that preceded it, and no agreed-upon opinion about anything that came after it, either; but one thing that we all seem to know for certain is that the 80s were definitely a part of the old school era.
So, if you're looking for some of those vintage clap-and-stomp old school block party grooves, then this CD is simply essential listening. We've got total classic good-time party-rockers all throughout this thing, like Parliament's "Flashlight," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," and the Rick James-produced "All Night Long," by the Mary Jane Girls. Also another big hit that topped Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart in 1981 with Frankie Smith's "Double Dutch Bus," which famously featured a bunch of Ebonic lyrics that would later go on to be sampled by Missy Elliott in her own 2002 rap smash, "Gossip Folks":
youtube
Teena Marie comes through with her #3 R&B hit, "Square Biz" as well, and pioneering Brooklyn rap crew, Whodini, deliver two cuts off of their 1984 platinum-selling LP, Escape, with one of their biggest singles, "Friends"—whose spine-tingling electro keys would find their way into Nas' "If I Ruled the World," and whose chorus would also get interpolated by Everlast during his rootsy folk-blues phase on "Ends"—and its B-side, "Five Minutes of Funk."
And, really, I could've picked pretty much any other random handful of songs from this album and written as glowingly about them as I did the ones above, but I don't wanna overload this post. So just know that just because I didn't end up devoting a few words to most of these songs, that doesn't mean that they don't deserve an equal amount of praise, because they definitely do.
A terrific CD, from top to bottom, that makes for an awesome way to channel 70 minutes of some of those beloved and bygone 80s old school party vibes.
And if you want *3 and a half more hours* of 80s goodness like this, I also have my very own Spotify playlist that's of a slightly different stripe, which includes more dance-pop and freestyle on it, along with classic electro, hip hop, and a little bit of new wave too 😊.
Highlights:
Frankie Smith - "Double Dutch Bus" D-Train - "You're the One for Me" Tom Browne - "Funkin for Jamaica" Parliament - "Flashlight" Whodini - "Five Minutes of Funk" George Clinton - "Atomic Dog" Mary Jane Girls - "All Night Long" One Way - "Cutie Pie" Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - "It Takes Two" Teena Marie - "Square Biz" Whodini - "Friends" The Gap Band - "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" Spyder-D - "Smerphies Dance"

February felt like we didn't do anything. That's only because, of course, we started the year with a last-minute trip to Holland to visit family.
The reason we went was because one of my uncles was diagnosed with terminal cancer and this was our last opportunity to see him.
About a week after we returned home, he lived out his last wish to return to the country of his birth: Indonesia. He went with his wife and two "kids" (my cousins who're around my age) on an adventure that involves a two part international flight totalling about fourteen hours in the air. No longer able to walk on his own, it was a wheelchair for him the entire trip. Once in Indonesia, they began doing a Greatest Hits of family, old friends, places he and my aunt grew up in, lived, knew from childhood and teenage years, and then a bunch of tourist stuff. During the course of three weeks, they moved across the country from west to east by trains, small planes, and cars. It was a magnificent trip we got to follow online through an app called PolarSteps, a real-time travel blog with pictures and video.
The trip was to last three weeks after which they'd all return home to Holland. Unfortunately by the last week, my uncle's cancer had progressed further, he was no longer able to eat or drink much, he was losing weight...
And then he was hospitalized.
In the end, he traveled the country of his birth from west to east for two and a half weeks, making it to Bali before he could go no further. He died after the day they were to return home. He died after his daughter returned to Holland and her daughter traveled the distance on her own to join him for the last two days of his life.
In his final hours, he slipped into a coma...
And then he was gone.
His memorial service was the first of March that's basically the thirtieth of February if there was such a thing as February thirtieth this year. We didn't catch the Livestream because it was too early our time but we did watch the video once it posted.
Of course everyone's speaking Dutch so there's only so much we understand. Fortunately, I have some tasty apps at my disposal so now we have a version that's captioned in English. It's not perfect, I'm sure. But good enough for our understanding.
Tumblr media
On the same day as the memorial service happened, February 30 (😉), there was a Life celebration gathering for my production mentor and friend, Tom Speer, who passed away at the end of November, last year. This day on which we gathered was also, would've also been, Tom's birthday. So yeah. There was wonderfully frosted cake alongside an assortment of food and drink. We sang Happy Birthday. This is also a production/broadcast group of professionals whose paths cross or have crossed. So there's a lot of catching up, filling each other in on our lives. Most of what we did, though, was share Tom stories. In fact, the main event of our gathering was a number of friends standing up front to share their experiences with Tom as friends, as neighbors, as people who worked alongside Tom during his extensive career as a videographer. That really was the point. We all walked away knowing more about Tom than what we knew when we first walked in.
It was a gift. It really was.
Tumblr media
Continuing this thread of dear life slipping away, I also dedicated time to writing the obituary for Kimmer's aunt Jacquie who passed away at the beginning of November last year.
I wrote her husband's obituary after he died at the top of 2023. It was crazy bittersweet to do the same for his wife who passed away eleven months later. And yeah. It really is a galling thing to reduce someone's life to five hundred words.
Not my favorite thing. Like, at all.
With Jacquie, we didn't get as lucky with her obit photograph as we did her husband. Someone had taken a genuinely iconic photo of him an,d not long before, forwarded it to his son, Kimmer's cousin. So Kimmer wound up going through every photo of her online, in any photo album, and anything on her phone or laptop. What she eventually settled on was perfect... although it was a photograph of a photograph in an album. And because of the angle at which the photo was taken and the reflections from the clear plastic covering the photo that obscured some of its details and because Kimmer was also in the photo standing shoulder to shoulder, slightly in front of her aunt...
Because of all that the photo was less than ideal. Fortunately, with an AI/Photoshop/Topaz Labs assist, I was able to scale up the photograph's resolution, pull Kimmer completely out of the shot, and restore anything that was hidden either by reflections or by Kimmer standing slightly in front of her aunt. It was a clever bit of magic these apps performed that produced the photograph we desired. Reminding us all through the process just how much we miss Jacquie.
Tumblr media
Intersecting with all that loss on our minds, it felt like we were randomly asked "how are you doing?" more than usually occurs. Even on a normal day the question always gives me pause because there are so many moving parts in our lives and not all of them are awesome all the time. And some of them are. So what do we do? Average those things? Cherry pick? Go with fine???
The middle of the month was a spread out Valentine's Day. Spread out because we never celebrate on the day because everyone's out and about celebrating that day, clogging up all the quiet corners we care to occupy. Day after Valentine's Day, then, we go out to see a movie together, "The Holdovers" at The Crest in Shoreline. A magnificent experience we enjoyed with a humongous bucket of superbly buttered popcorn. Then the day after the day after Valentine's Day, Friday, we exchange presents and cards and flowers before heading out to dinner at Girardis Osteria in Edmonds for an ungodly amount of delicious pasta to accompany our wine.
Snow made an appearance at our home in late February, dusting our home and yard and cars three mornings running, having completely melted by three afternoons running. On the first of those days I took our car—the one that was stolen in December and taken on a wild bumper car ride to Bellevue—I took our car to the body shop where we're having our next round of work done in April. This particular day, our insurance wanted the interior mold taken care of so that what was done for our car since it spent a number of days in a tow yard with a fully smashed window during a string of relentlessly rainy days was not a waste of time. After the drop-off, I caught an Uber ride with a gentleman who's incredibly proud of his wife and daughters for the degrees and graduations they recently achieved.
Funny thing: one of his daughters works at a local company where one of his Uber rides turned out to be working. They figured it out during conversation that the ride and his daughter work in the same department.
Small world.
And the snow?
While we got a half inch or less, he and his neighbors accumulated two inches of snow on their properties.
Tumblr media
Cats were a thing in February. We welcomed into our home a big black cat named Quarter (as in Quarter Note) on behalf of a dear friend who'll be away until Fall. Taking a bit of advice from a cat expert on YouTube, we kept our cat, Dinker, and the new cat apart for a week or so. Each was aware of the other, of course. But they never met in person. Early on, the closest they got was staring at each other through the glass of our family room door. No hisses. No aggressive postures. Just a curious sort of "who the heck are you?"
Eventually, they came to share the same physical spaces with a benign tolerance and trust. Again no hissing or aggressive posturing. By the end of the month, they were even playful with each other. Tussling. Chasing after one another.
They each have their own individual rituals and habits along with home bases at opposite ends of the house and a shared mealtime that turns into a bit of a race to see who finishes first so they can poach the other's unfinished meal.
Tumblr media
February after Valentine's Day also bore witness to our first steps at deChristmassing our home. So far we've got all the garland down inside the house except for Kimmer's office where that bough will grace the room the full year. We've got most of the nicknacky decorations put away including the stockings hung over the fireplace. We've got a number of interior light strings put away even as most will stay up 'cause we like the look. All the icicle lights outdoors along our front gutters from one end of the house to the other are put away. As are the random lights we threw on the bushes. Thankfully, there was time to tag all the lights and garlands with their locations in preparation for the end of this year when they all go back up again.
Hopefully, probably, we'll have it all put away before this month of March sees its last day.
Tumblr media
Okay.
The thread running through February that will continue running through the foreseeable months for the next one and a half years... is Kimmer and her doctoral program. Thirty-some hours a week of reading, writing, class interactions, lectures, conferences, and research paired with a thirty-hour work week and the never-ending charting each such week cranks out. It's not the sum total of our daily routines and responsibilities but it is the main juggling act on a high wire that's going on around here along with everything that pops up because yeah. Things pop up you gotta do or deal with or that you just wanna do as a break from what you gotta deal with.
So this.
Was not a month off. Just a different way to go wall to wall while maintaining a life together in there somewhere: lunches together, walks in the neighborhood, listening to podcasts, alternately streaming Royal Pains and Big Bang Theory, planning adventures, snuggling while the snow falls.
In the end, February was a month soaked in emotional experience. It was a lot of loss catching up with us in different ways that still hurt our hearts, sure. It was everything else as well. All the pieces and parts that add up and color our days. Which, I guess...
Is just what normal looks like around here.

Wednesday's temperature check (3-15)
“Beware the ides of March.”
"Well, the Ides of March are come."
"Aye, they are come, but they are not gone."
This is the famous exchange between Julius Caesar and the Long Island Medium while driving to Ford’s Theater.  Julius Caesar, the popular Roman leader and author died shortly afterward, surrounded by his friends.  We remember Caesar’s death because it was brilliantly over-acted by William “Shakespear” Shatner in Star Trek 9, The Wrath of Brutus.  Ides of March is also notable in Rome as a deadline for settling debts.  In the United States we call this tax day and shift it a month to the right to avoid slow bandwidth associated with the NCAA Tournament.  Speaking of craziness, how about February?  Sure, we left that future Jordan Peele movie in the rear view mirror a couple of weeks ago.
The US wasn’t the only country feeling the prying eyes of Chinese spy balloons. Over in the Netherlands, a patrolling policeman saw what he suspected to a spy balloon above his neighborhood.  It was either that or a monster out to eat unsuspecting fans of a mysterious aerial phenomenon.
Tumblr media
You can tell the difference between the offending spy balloon and alien craft by the lack of English words in the left picture.  With all the energy and bravado of a 70s-era Burt Reynolds movie, the Dutch-tis of Peace,  gave chase.  However, he couldn’t triangulate on a location to give the air force.  He’d head toward it’s location, but it was elusive.
No matter what direction he turned, it was there.  During a quick stop for benzine (editor’s note: If this was in the US, it would be called gasoline.  The officer in question would have also emptied several clips toward the suspected alien/spy balloon.) he decided to clean his windshield.  It was then he learned the UFO/spy balloon was bird poop.  Apparently, they were Chinese spy birds.
Tumblr media
My day has already turned into some sort of bird sh**-show!
Stay safe!

— ( RACES & OLD RITUALS! )
pairing: max verstappen x driver fem!reader
summary: max has always been your good luck charm, just as much as you are his.
warning: so fluffy, gianpiero wingman😔, max is crazy in love
word count: 1.1k
them: this is what falling in love feels like by jvke
author’s note: im in my max feels after his win today at the hungary gp (baby boy was so happy!!🥺🧡) so i whipped this out in like half an hour. sorry if it’s not good but my brain is literally fried due to uni. more and better things to come for sure!!
taglist at the end, if anyone is interested please don’t hesitate to ask! (also, requests are currently open!)
Tumblr media
“i seriously feel like i see you more on this side than on your own garage” gianpiero deadpanned, not even looking up from the endless amount of data sheets he was absorbing before the race.
you couldn’t help but laugh at gp’s monote voice, “that’s because my presence brings you an infinite amount of joy.” you said with a teasing smile, making him and the rest of the race engineers that were huddled around the table laugh as well.
gp rolled his eyes, an amused look on his face. “would you please get out of my garage? i already have enough dutch to go around.”
you feigned a gasp, “hey! i’m the better kind of dutch!”
before you fell into a tangent, gp waved you off with a growing smile on his face. “yeah, yeah, whatever. the not-so-good kind of dutch is in his drivers room.”
you said goodbye to gianpiero and the rest of the guys, before making your way to max’s room. a few people smiled at you on the way there, as everyone was used to having you on this side of the garage; same goes for max when he’s on yours.
the rest of max’s team loved having you there, since it was very hard to miss the way the dutch guy perked up when he had you around. everyone always shared knowing looks when max’s could keep his eyes off of yours and how he followed you around like a lost puppy, smiling at anything and everything you said.
gp always fake gagged at your guy’s cheesiness, but truthfully he was very impatient about someone, anyone, making a move on the other. being one of max’s biggest confidente, he knew more than he let on; so, anytime he’d catched his arm wrapped around your waist or word spread around that a picture of you two had gone viral, the smallest smile filled with pride graced his face.
both yours and max’s media team were your guy’s number one fans. they always seemed to catch the perfect pictures to make fans go crazy, and have squealed and ‘awed’ an absurd amount of time when showing the rest of the team pictures they’ve taken of max and you when you weren’t even looking.
“do you think today is the day?” tom, verstappen's performance engineer asked, partly joking, but with hopefulness as well.
gp could only chuckle. “as if.”
as you absently made your way through the garage, you came in contact with a hard chest. you felt max’s chest vibrate as he let out a small chuckle with his hands automatically coming to your waist to stabilize you.
“oh” he said, raising a brow. max’s eyes lit up at your presence. “came here to steal information?”
you poked his shoulder, his hands still around your waist, “don’t need it. i am, in fact, quicker than you on the straights.” you referred to last week’s race debrief.
he hummed. “that’s debatable. but you do, in fact, open too wide at many corners.”
you gasped. “i do not!”
he mocked your gasp in a exaggerated manner, “i do not!” he copied you in a highly pitched tone.
you laughed at that, and max could help look at you with warm eyes, completely mesmerized. a smile grew on his lips at the sound of your laugh a the sparkle of your eyes. he could almost hear gianpiero’a voice on his head.
he’s so, utterly, fucked. and whipped.
the small little bubble you both had created suddenly disappeared at the voice of your performance coach calling your name from the outside of the garage, “time’s up. we need to do a quick brief.”
you turned at the sound of his voice and nodded at him in acknowledgment. “i’ll be right up!”
since the beginning of your f1 career, max and you developed a ritual that you guys did before every race. even before you signed with redbull and were part of mclaren, you always made sure to find each other in the sea of people. you had never gone a race without finding each other and max often refers to you a his good luck charm.
for the past two years with you in red bull and max as your next door neighbor, things were much easier.
now facing each other, max’s arms left your waist and extended his palms in front of you with a knowing smile. you smiled at the gesture, joining your hands with his’ with your fingers interlocking in what for you was a very familiar touch.
people often joked max and you were born holding hands together, but you truly believe your palms had molded into the shape of his. hand in hand, he brought your hands close to his lips and deposited a soft kiss on them, “see you on the other side.” max’s bright blue eyes beamed at you.
you mirrored his smile and equaled the gesture, bringing your joined hands towards you and kissing your knuckles. well, more his than yours.
not intentionally, of course.
“see you on the other side.” you answered. max squeezed your hands one final time, before your hands left his.
you were already missing his soft skin pressed against yours as you turned around and left for your garage, which was right besides his. just like he had always been; right beside you.
max eyes were glued to your back whilst watching you disappear. the boy-ish smile only left his face when he felt gianpiero give him a firm pay on the back.
“okay lover boy, don’t get all gooey with me now. time to race.”
later you would find out that the media team had snapped a few pictures of you at the perfect time; one of you with your hands intertwined and leveled up to both of your chins, you looking down and your fingers and max’s warm gaze never leaving tour face. there was another one similar but with max kissing your knuckles and then you doing the same.
all three pictures were posted with the caption:
“red bull’s good luck charms = 🦁🧡 + 🐯🧡”

On racial stereotyping of the Haans in TMA...
Right so as someone who is ethnically Chinese I have NO FUCKING clue how I didn’t notice this more distinctly in my initial binge of tma (going too fast and not paying closer attention to character names and descriptions, probably) but the Haan family storyline is, all horror elements aside, pretty fucked up in terms of racial representation re: stereotyping. This got long as hell, but please please please take a moment to read through if you’ve got time for it. thanks.
To start off, the Haans are one of the few characters in tma with an explicitly specified race and ethnicity—Chinese—and pretty much the only explicitly Chinese characters in tma, other than the mostly unimportant librarian (Zhang Xiaoling) from Beijing. But like, Haan isn’t even a properly Chinese surname, at least not in the way that it’s spelled in canon (it should be Han, one a. A quick google search tells me that Haan as a surname has...Dutch origins??).
Of course, that could be chalked up to shoddy anglicization processes within family histories, which certainly isn’t uncommon with immigrant families, so I’m not going to dwell on names too much (although I also find it interesting that John Haan’s name is so specifically and weirdly anglicized that he changed his own surname?? Hun Yung to John Haan is a very big leap of a name change and frankly not very believable. ANYWAY, this is not that important. I don’t expect Jonny, a white Englishman, to come up with perfectly unquestionable non-Cho-Chang-like Chinese names, though it certainly would be nice. Moving on).
What really bothers me about the Haans is how they almost exclusively and explicitly play into negative Chinese immigrant stereotypes. I don’t even feel like I need to say it because it’s like...it’s literally Right There, folks. John Haan (in ep 72) owns and operates a sketchy takeout restaurant. They’re all avatars of the Flesh—and John Haan is Specifically horrific and terrifying because he cooked his wife’s human meat and fed it to his unknowing customers. Does that remind you of any stereotypes which accuse Chinese people of consuming societally unacceptable and ethically questionable things like dog/cat/bat meat (which, if it’s not already crystal fucking clear, we don’t. do that.), which in turn characterize us as horrible unfeeling monsters? John Haan’s characterization feeds (haha, badum tss) directly into this harmful stereotype that have caused very real pain for Chinese people and East Asians in general.
And Jonny does nothing to address that from within his writing (and not out of it either). And, speaking on a more meta level, Jonny could’ve easily had these flesh avatars be individuals of any race (like, what’s Jared Hopworth’s ethnicity? Do we know? No? Well then). Conversely, he could’ve easily, easily had a Chinese person be an avatar of any other entity. So why did he have to chose specifically the Flesh?
(This is a rhetorical question. You know why. Racial stereotyping and invoking a fear of the other in an attempt to enhance horror, babey~)
On Tom Haan’s side, Jonny seems weirdly intent on having other characters repeatedly comment on his accent (or rather, lack thereof) in relation to his race. Think about how, in ep 30 (killing floor), the fact that Tom Haan had spoken a line to the statement giver in “perfect English” was an emphasized beat in that statement, and a beat that was supposed to be “chilling” and meant to signify to us that something was, quote-unquote, “not right” with Tom Haan. Implicitly, that’s saying that it was unexpected, not “normal”, and in this case even eerie, for someone who looks Chinese to have spoken in fluid, unbroken English. Mind you, the line itself was perfectly scary on its own (you cannot stop the slaughter by closing the door”), so why did Jonny feel the need to note the accent in which it was spoken in? Why did Jonny HAVE to have that statement giver note, that he initially “wasn’t even sure how much English [Haan] spoke”?
This happens again in episode 72 with a Chinese man (and again, his ethnicity is Explicitly Noted) who we assume is also Tom Haan. This one is rather ironically funny and kind of painfully self aware, because the statement giver expresses surprise at Haan’s “crisp RP accent” and then immediately “felt bad about making the assumption that he couldn’t speak English,” and subsequently admitted that thought was “low-key racist.” Like, from a writing perspective, this entire passage is roundabout, pointless, and says absolutely nothing helpful to enhance the horror genre experience for listeners (instead it just sounded like some sort of half-assed excuse so Jonny or other listeners could say “look! We’ve addressed the racism!” You didn’t. It just made me vaguely uncomfortable). And again, having other people comment on our accents/lack thereof while assuming we are foreign is a Very Real microaggression that east asians face on the daily. If Jonny needed some filler sentences for pacing he could’ve written about Literally anything else. So why point out, yet again, that the crazy murderous man was foreign and Chinese?
At this point, you might say, right, but yknow, it was just that the statement givers were kind of racist! It happens! Yeah sure, ok, that’s a passable in-universe explanation for descriptions of Tom Haan (though not John Haan, mind you), but the statement givers are fake made up people, and statement’s still written by Jonny, who absolutely has all the power to write overt discrimination out of his stories. And he does! Think about just how many minor (and major!!) characters are so, so carefully written as completely aracial, and do not have their ethnicity implicated at all in whatever horrors they may or may not be committing. Think about how many lgbtq+ characters have given statements, and have been in statements, without having faced direct forms of discrimination, or portrayed as embodying blatant stereotypes in their stories (though lgbtq+ rep in tma certainly has their own issues that I won’t go into here). Jonny can clearly write characters this way, and he can do it well. So why, why, am I being constantly, repeatedly reminded in-text of the fact that the Haans are East Asian, that they’re from China, that they’re Chinese immigrants, that they’re second-generation British Chinese or whatever the fuck, and that they’re also horrifying conduits for blood, gore, and general fucked-up-ness? It’s absolutely not something that is Needed for the stories to be an effective piece of horror; the only thing it does is perpetuate incredibly harmful and hurtful stereotypes.
And listen, I love tma to bits. It’s taken over my blog. I’ve really loved my interactions with the fandom. And I am consistently blown away by Jonny’s writing and how well he’s able to weave foreshadowing and plot into an incredibly complex collection of stories. But I absolutely Cannot stop thinking about the Haans because it’s just. It’s such a blatant display of racial stereotyping in writing. And I’ve certainly seen a few voices talking about it here and there, and I don’t know if I’m just not looking in the right places, but it certainly feels like something that is just straight up not on the radar for a lot of tma fans. And I’m disappointed about that.
Just, I don’t know. Take a look at those episodes again and do some of your own thinking about why these characters had to be specifically Chinese (answer: they didn’t.). And in general, PLEASE for the love of god turn a critical eye on character portrayals and descriptions whenever they are assigned specific races/ethnicities (Some examples that come to mind are Jude Perry, Annabelle Cane, and Diego Molina), because similar issues, to an extent, extend beyond the Haans, though I haven’t covered them here.
You shouldn’t need a POC to do point out these problems for you when they’re so glaringly There. But for those of you who really didn’t know, hope this was informative in some way. I’m tired, man. If some of the only significant Chinese characters you write are violent cannibalistic men with a perverted relationship with meat, just don’t do it. Please don’t do it.
EDIT: Since the making of this post Jonny has acknowledged and apologized for these portrayals on his twitter and in the Rusty Quill Operations Update, which went up September 2020. A long time coming, but better late than never. This of course doesn’t necessarily negate the harm done by Jonny’s writing, and doesn’t make me much less angry about it, but is appreciated nonetheless. For more on this topic there’s a lot of productive discussions happening in my “#tma crit” tag and in the notes of this post

Notes: I love this man 🥰💦 If you’d like to check out my previous works, you can find them on my Masterlist 😘
Tommaso Ciampa, now this was a name that could easily trigger both the best, and the worst elements of me. Best because he could make me turn into mush, and worst because he’s the only human that can push my buttons like no one else.
When I first started working in NXT I would have sworn that I was sure we would never get along, but it was actually quite the opposite, we got along almost instantly and it was weird the amount of things we had in common. We became good friends, and yes, that was it. Would I like for it to be different? Yes. Will it be different? No. Simple as that.
Thatcher was also a good friend of mine. We knew each other longer than Tommaso and I did, and our friendship was a lot more intimate.
Ever since we met, he always flirted with me. He never really meant it, it was all in a teasing way. But it was on a daily basis, and Thatcher is kinda known for not toning it down, so his “flirting” can get quite...exposing? Well, what I’m trying to say is that it gets explicit...sometimes too explicit.
“Could you stop talking about her like that in front of me” Tommaso growled, to which Thatcher scoffed
“And since when are you the boss of me, blue eyes?”
“I mean it! Fucking stop.talking.about.her.like.that!” He grunted and left
“And what the fuck is his problem?” He asked me with a frown
“I don’t know, Thatchy...I’ll talk to him” I stated and stood up to go after Tommaso
I had to ran around the whole goddamn arena because he was so fast, I couldn’t get ahold of him
“Tommaso!” I called and ran to him, and when he was at the door that lead to the parking lot, he looked over his shoulder at me, huffed and and walked outside
*What the fuck?* I thought to myself and followed him out
“Tommaso, slow down!” I ran and pulled him by his arm. “What’s wrong?”
“It really doesn’t bother you, does it?” He squinted his eyes in hatred “The things he says, the way he says it. You don’t give a fuck!”
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I asked in disbelief
“It really doesn’t make sense to me how can you be so cool with it. Like, the guy says the most absurd things to you and you don’t even blink!” He spat
“Hold up- Thatcher and I are friends and how we decide to express our friendship does not concern you”
Tommaso closed the distance between us “It does concern me when it’s done in front of my face!”
“Why do you even care?”
“How would you react if I did the same to you? If I told you all the time how delicious you look in leggings or how your thighs call for me so bad that I wish to bury myself in between them?” He mentioned the things Thatcher commented on earlier today
“I wouldn’t care!” I honestly responded
“Ok...and how would you react if you saw me doing that with one of the other girls?”
“I wouldn’t care” I tried to hide my discomfort from him, but of course he noticed right away
“Wouldn’t you? Really?” He came closer with a smirk
“No”
“Something in your voice tells me otherwise” Tommaso caressed my inner wrist with a smile “I think you’d be very bothered by it, actually” And suddenly his hand went from my wrist to the nape of my neck “I honestly think that if that happened, you wouldn’t be able to take that cute little pout off your face” Leaning down, he stopped dangerously close to my lips “Something tells me, that you wouldn’t like that at all, would you, Y/N?”
“Why do you care?” I grunted
While chuckling he answered “Because”
“You’re so ridiculous, Ciampa”
“Oh, it’s Ciampa now, huh?” His hand slid from the nape of neck to my ass “So you’re THAT mad?” He pulled me closer to him until our bodies touched “Why would you be so mad if you don’t care about poor old Tommy here?”
“Let me go, you’re starting to annoy me”
“But you’re not annoyed with Thatcher, are you?”
“Why are you picking on Thatchy all of a sudden?”
“Because Thatchy” He said, with a bitter mocking tone “Is starting to get too close to what’s mine”
“I hope you’re not implying that ‘what’s yours’ is me”
“Funny...Last week you got your panties in a twist because you heard some girl in the club talking about how she wanted to come back to the hotel with me for the night” He narrowed his eyes “So tell me, Y/N. Why is it ok when you do it, but it isn’t when I do it?”
“It’s not about that-”
“So what is it about?” He squeezed my ass with his hands “If it’s not about us being attracted to each other and hating when other people go around lurking around what we want” He leaned down to whisper in my ear “You want me, don’t you, Y/N?”
I moaned softly at his low voice, warmth and scent being so close to me
“Tom-“
“No no no, shhhh” He nibbled my ear “Don’t fight it” He hugged me closer
“Fuck” I moaned
“Say it, Y/N. I wanna hear you say it”
“Yes, I want you” I pulled him closer to me by the waistband of his jeans “I’ve always wanted you! Happy now?”
“Very much” He chuckled and picked me up in his arms. Pinning me against one of the back walls of the parking lot
His kiss was urgent, as if he had waited an eternity to do so. His lips soon connected to my neck, my very sweet spot, which instantly made me moan like a bitch in heat.
“Your moans drive me crazy” He pressed his hard bulge against my crotch
“Tom...please”
When he looked up at me, his pupils were so dilated that it made his eyes almost appear black “Again” He growled
“Tom, please-”
Soon after, I felt his hands on the crotch of my leggings. He took the fabric in his hands and ripped it open along with my panties
“Are you fucking insane?” I gasped in shock “How am I supposed to go back-” The words died on my mouth the minute his swollen tip slid in me
“Jesus fuck” He grunted, while biting the meeting point between my shoulder and neck in order to muffle his moans
“Shit, you’re so..” My eyes rolled to the back of my head in pleasure
Tommaso thrusted in and out - slowly at first, stretching my walls to his (very) incredible length.
“Fucking you is so much better than I expected” He stated, while pulling my bottom lip between his teeth
“You’re so much bigger than I expected” I moaned
His boyish chuckle was the reminder of why I wanted this with him. This moment, this intimacy. Yes, we are in a public parking lot and this is the furthest away from a romantic scenario as possible, but it was him. It was WITH him. It was what I’ve always wanted and almost as if he could read my mind, he said
“I promise you next time it will be on a proper bed, covered with red rose petals and lots of champagne” Tommaso kissed me so softly, that it was almost an ironic joke compared to his quick thrusts
“Is Tommy a soft boy?” I giggled
“For you? I’m a fucking simp” He smiled widely while his thumb met my clit
“Does this mean that we’ll become roommates?” I caressed his neck and pressed our foreheads together
“You’re stuck with me now, cupcake” He pecked my lips “Deal with it‘ He cackled
Feeling his body pressed against mine, his arms squeezing me tight and his cock fucking me so good was more than enough to make me cum
“Tom”
“I’m right behind you, baby” He whispered against my lips
My orgasm exploded around him and my vision became blurred. For one minute I could only hear the frantic pace of my heartbeat in my ears.
Tommaso quickly pulled out and shot his load against the concrete wall with a grunt.
“Nice aim” I joked
“Not bad, huh?” He laughed while kissing me
“Wanna go back to the hotel?”
“Oh, you’re that eager?”
“Fuck yes! And I don’t want anyone but me seeing that beautiful ass of yours”
“How do you know my ass is beautiful?” I asked defiantly
“I peeked through your locker room peephole”
"Tommaso!" I gasped and slapped his shoulder
And of course his only response was to laugh
Please, if you’re comfortable with it, let me know your thoughts on this? Feedbacks are always appreciated 🥰❤️

I loved, loved, loved that chapter!!!! here are just some of my thoughts!! :
- I’m probably very wrong, but I think the reason reg was gone was because he was getting the house in Brazil and he wanted everything to be ready!!!
- my anxiety when Reg was revealing the traitor??? through the roof
- also, I’m terrified of Tom being in the fic because I KNOW that he’s going to kill someone. I feel it in my bones
- marls and reg being friends? in love
- James saying goodnight to the flowers? he’s adorable and I love him. I feel like he’s still do it even when he wasn’t high
- why did Evan and Barty look guilty at the mention of the news I think???? will that be answered???
- also, them sleeping in the room together and Barty hiding under the blanket??? love that shit. I also love how protective they are over Reg
that is all for now!
AHH!! Thank you!!! :))) <333
- reg leaving James in amsterdam to catch a flight to Brazil for like .002s is just wild and crazy enough to be plausible hahaha yk anything is possible!
-Bartys anxiety was through the roof too haha,, he was like “regulus spit it out I s2g im gonna collapSE”
- tom being in the fic brings the vibes down 28392% tbh
- reg says they’re not friends he’s just helping her out w something 😌 (they’re friends)
- James would still say goodnight to the flowers even if he wasn’t high, this is true
- Evan and Barty looked guilty because they admitted to James and Mary the night before that they had been looking in the dutch newspaper for news about the heist haha and then regulus was like “don’t do that”
- YEAH YEAHH evan was like “this is Bartys room.” And if James had stopped worrying about Regulus for .2 seconds maybe ,,, MAYBE HE WOULDVE PAUSED TO THINK ABT THAT MORE

February felt like we didn't do anything. That's only because, of course, we started the year with a last-minute trip to Holland to visit family.
A very big deal, by the way. A huuuuuuge experience.
The reason we went was because one of my uncles was diagnosed with terminal cancer and this was our last opportunity to see him.
About a week after we returned home, he lived out his last wish to return to the country of his birth: Indonesia. He went with his wife and two "kids" (my cousins who're within a decade younger than me) on an adventure that involves a two-part international flight totaling about fourteen hours in the air. It was a magnificent trip we got to follow online through an app called PolarSteps, a real-time travel blog with pictures and videos.
The trip was to last three weeks after which they'd all return home to Holland. Unfortunately by the last week, my uncle's cancer progressed so much that he was no longer able to eat or drink much, he was losing weight losing weigth losing weight...
And then he was hospitalized.
In the end, he traveled the country of his birth from west to east for two and a half weeks, making it to Bali before he could go no further. He died one day after the day they were to return home.
On the same day as the memorial service, February 30 (😉), there was a Life celebration gathering for my production mentor and friend, Tom Speer, who passed away at the end of November, last year. This day in which we gathered was also, would've also been, Tom's birthday. So yeah. There was wonderfully frosted cake alongside an assortment of food and drink. We sang Happy Birthday. The gathering was filled with a production/broadcast group of professionals whose paths crossed or have crossed. So there's a lot of catching up, filling each other in on our lives. Most of what we did, though, was share Tom stories. In fact the main event of our gathering was sharing Tom experiences as friends, as neighbors, as people who worked alongside Tom during his extensive career as a videographer. That really was the point. We all walked away knowing more about Tom than we knew when we first walked into the room.
Someone had taken a genuinely iconic photo of him and not long before forwarded it to his son, Kimmer's cousin.
Kimmer wound up going through every photo of her aunt online, in any photo album, and anything on her phone or laptop. What she eventually found was perfect... although it was a photograph of a photograph in an album. And because of the angle at which the photo was taken... and the reflections from the clear plastic covering the photo that obscured some of its details and because Kimmer was also in the photo standing shoulder to shoulder, slightly in front of her aunt...

Intersecting with all this loss on our minds, it felt like we were randomly asked "how are you doing?" more than usually occurs. Even on a normal day the question always gives me pause because there are so many moving parts in our lives and not all of them are awesome all the time. And some of them are. So what do we do? Average those things? Cherry pick? Go with fine???
Well...
The middle of the month was a spread-out Valentine's Day. Spread out because we never celebrate on the day because everyone's out and about celebrating on that day, clogging up all the quiet corners we care to occupy. Day after Valentine's Day, then, we went out to see a movie together, "The Holdovers" at The Crest in Shoreline. A magnificent experience we enjoyed with a humongous bucket of superbly buttered popcorn. The day after the day after Valentine's Day, Friday, we exchange presents and cards and flowers before heading out to dinner at Girardis Osteria in Edmonds for an ungodly amount of delicious pasta to accompany our wine.

Snow made an appearance at our home in late February, dusting our home and yard and cars three mornings running, melting completely for three afternoons running. On the first of those days I took our car—the one that was stolen in December and taken on a wild bumper car smash-up ride to Bellevue—I took our car to the body shop where we're having our next round of work done in April. This particular day, our insurance wanted the interior mold cleared out given that our car spent days in a tow yard with a fully smashed window during a string of relentlessly rainy days. After the drop-off, I catch a charming Uber ride with a gentleman who's incredibly proud of his wife and daughters for the degrees and graduations they just achieved.
Funny thing: one of his daughters works at a local company where one of his Uber customers turned out to be working. They figured it out during conversation that the customer and his daughter work in the same department.
Small world.
And the snow?
While we got a half inch or less, he and his neighbors accumulated two inches of snow on their properties.
Tumblr media
Cats were a thing in February. We welcomed into our home a big black cat named Quarter (after quarter note) on behalf of a dear friend who'll be away until Fall.
Tumblr media
Eventually, they came to share the same physical spaces with a benign tolerance and trust. Again no hissing or aggressive posturing. Eventually, by the end of the month, they even got to be playful with each other. Tussling. Chasing after each other.
They each have their own individual rituals and habits along with home bases at opposite ends of the house and a shared mealtime that turns into a bit of a race to see who finishes first so they can poach the other's unfinished meal.
Tumblr media
February after Valentine's Day also bird witness to our first steps at deChristmassing our home. So far we've got all the garland down inside the house except for Kimmer's office where that bough will grace the room the full year. We've got most of the nicknacky decorations put away including the stockings hung above the fireplace. We've got a number of interior light strings put away even as most will stay up 'cause we like the look. All the icicle lights outdoors along our front gutters from one end of the house to the other are put away. As are the random lights we threw on the bushes. Thankfully, there was time to tag all the lights and garlands with their locations in preparation for the end of this year when they all go up again.
Hopefully, probably, we'll have it all out away before this month of March sees its last day.
Tumblr media
The thread running through February that will continue running through every foreseeable month for the next one-and-a-half years is Kimmer and her doctoral program. Thirty-some hours a week of reading, writing, class interactions, lectures, conferences, and research paired with a thirty-hour work week and the never ending charting each such week adds to the pile. It's not the sum total of our daily routines and responsibilities but it is the main juggling act on a high wire that's going on around here along with everything that pops up because yeah. Things pop up that you gotta do or deal with or that you just wanna do as a break from what you gotta deal with.

Elvis.
D: Baz Luhrmann (2022).
To say that Baz Luhrmann is an impulsive moviemaker is an understatement. Watching Elvis, his aiming-for-definitive biography of the King of Rock’n’Roll, it’s easy to believe that he never had an idea he didn’t like. Turning a young Elvis’s encounter with a black revival church into a Busby Berkely conversion scene? Why not? Framing the lost-in-Hollywood middle sixties as one long, bad Elvis movie? Brilliant!  Having the whole story told by Manager/Svengali Colonel Tom Parker played by Tom Hanks wearing a fat suit, and with the Dutch accent Parker (nee Andreas Cornelis van Kujik) covered with a fake Virginia drawl, front and center? “I’ve outdone myself!” Obviously Luhrmann values spectacle and myth over detailed, or even accurate storytelling but how else can you tell the Elvis Presley story in which a poor, shy boy from Tennessee brings a fusion of country humility and blues abandon to bring a sound and style of erotic abandon to a larger audience than anybody had ever reached? And if the vulgarity of his Cuisinart filmmaking style looks back to Ken Russell and late-period Oliver Stone, its lack of any hipster cynicism honors Elvis’s own vulgarity, which was always fundamental to his artistry.
And unlike any Elvis biopic I’ve seen this really is a portrait of the artist as a young man. Austin Butler’s performance let’s us see how this nervous and insecure kid becomes an ambitious and confident dynamo the second he hits the stage and how that ambition reaches beyond what he and Parker can put in the bank. The early scenes convey what I’ve only seen in documentary footage – how much Elvis seemed to come out of nowhere moving and singing like nobody had before. Luhrmann honors that spark, how hard it was to get, to control, sometimes even to recognize it. He also doesn’t miss how Parker’s unreliable narration (combining the self-delusion of Humbert Humbert with the resentment of Salieri) misses that spark in his cash cow and how that self-serving myopia led to the stunting of Elvis’s artistic growth and contributed to his decline and early death. The film may play fast-and-loose with some (okay a lot) of the facts – check out books by Peter Guralnick and Alanna Nash for the full story – but in its own crazy kaleidoscope way it gets the story right.
