The Solar System Legacy Challenge: Start With the Sad Stuff Gen 1 pt.73
Tumblr media
TW: Mention of car accidents and death
Beckett stepped inside admiring Madison's house. She closed the door and stood in the small entryway.
Tumblr media
Beckett: Hey.
Madison: Sorry about the mess.
Beckett waved off her comment.
Beckett: You call this a mess? You should have tried living with my college roommates. That was a mess.
She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes he realized.
Beckett: Your home is lovely. It reminds me of my childhood home in Tomarang. It has a certain warmth and charm to it, like you.
He wasn't trying to deliver some cheesy pickup line. He'd felt her warmhearted nature from the moment they'd met and her home outwardly expressed that. It was filled with soft hues of blue and grey while the bulk of the furniture was white. It was cozy and inviting with its crowded bookshelves and small kitchen.
Madison: Sorry for ruining the plans. You went to the trouble to plan... you didn't say where we were going.
Beckett laughed shyly scratching the back of his neck.
Tumblr media
Beckett: It seems pretty lame now. Remember last week you mentioned that Moonwood Mills author, Vulfgang Mulder. Well, he was just nominated for an award for "Packs & Prejudice". When I read the article it said that a popup cat cafe planned to be in town this week and they booked him for the entire time to do a live reading. I figured cats, writers, and a little artsy shopping. The cafe was serving dinner, I promise. I didn't intend to make you eat croissants and caffeine every time we went out and now I'm likely rambling.
Tumblr media
Beckett: Madison!
Madison was floored. What he'd planned sounded like a dream, but in that moment she realized just how little Paris had truly known about her in the last 20 years. When they spoke about the plans for that day, almost a week ago, Beckett had requested that he be allowed to plan the whole thing. She had been a little skeptical but he'd seemed so excited and she'd wanted to please him. At the time it had seemed like such a mundane thing to give up. Now she could see that it hadn't been a minor deal to him at all. Vulfgang Mulder wrote Romance novels. She'd been following his work for a few months. He'd recently released a new book "Wolf's Next Door" and Madison had told Beckett how she'd been meaning to pick up a copy but hadn't had time. She had only mentioned it once and briefly during one of their many conversations. Clearly, he'd been listening.
Tumblr media
He soothed her as she sobbed, never leaving her side until she could manage to take slow even breaths. He helped her sit back on her heels.
Beckett: You want to tell me about it?
Madison: It's a mess..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beckett: I planned to spend the whole day listening to you tell me about your life, no offense to Vulfgang. So what if we have to start with the sad stuff.
Madison sighed, she got to her feet with some assistance from Beckett. She took a seat on the couch inviting him to sit beside her before she told him everything.
Madison: I met Paris in the third grade. We were friends almost instantly. Her family is pretty wealthy and she had all the newest toys so she insisted we spend most afternoons at her house with the babysitter. Her parents were hardly around so we got away with a lot of stuff. Plus with a house that big it was pretty easy to stay out of the way.
Tumblr media
As she recounted her childhood Beckett heard her stomach growl.
Beckett: I could whip up something if you didn't mind me using your kitchen.
Madison: Really? I could just order a pizza or something.
Beckett: I think you could use a home-cooked meal.
He rummaged through the cabinets and fridge gathering ingredients. As he expertly prepared a group serving of Chicken Stir-Fry she told him about high school and Paris's first romantic endeavor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jared Hollands was the 10th-grade English teacher at San Myshuno High. He was too young to be a teacher and all the girls in his class had a thing for him. But a schoolgirl crush and swooning over him during lunch hadn't been enough for Paris. Madison had noticed her flirting with him during class and finally towards the end of the first semester she'd admitted that she was sleeping with him.
Tumblr media
Madison: I tried to talk her out of seeing him anymore but Paris does what Paris wants. She would ask me to cover for her in between classes or tell her parents she was at my house when she was really staying the night with Mr.Hollands. When his wife found out it got pretty bad. She started stalking Paris at school, parking her car outside in the student parking lot. Just, waiting. One day she confronted Paris when school let out.
Tumblr media
She paused not wanting to speak of the incident but needing to.
Madison: I felt so bad for the woman. Paris just laughed at her. I pulled her away and we got in the car. Paris had robotics and I stayed for bookclub that afternoon so it was late. We didn't realize she was following us until we were halfway home. She rammed the car.
Tumblr media
Closing her eyes as she pictured the cars on the road that night.
Madison: We veered off the road and crashed into a pole. Paris walked away with a few scraps and bruises. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital...Mrs.Hollands didn't make it off the road.
Tumblr media
Beckett cleared the dishes while Madison poured cups of wine. They head to the back porch to enjoy the last of the daylight.
Tumblr media
Madison: After High school, the plan was always to paint. San Myshuno seemed like the obvious choice with its huge art scene but the art style was a little too grudge for my taste. I wasn't sure what to do for a while and I stopped painting. Of course, Paris told me that I shouldn't have wasted my time with the "Stupid hobby" in the first place. I wasn't painting anymore but for a few months I started taking freelance work doing digital sketch art, good money but I'm a painter at heart. My mom landed some work in Brindelton Bay, She's an artist herself, so I tagged along figuring I could use the change of scenery. The moment we got off the train in Whiskerman's Wharf I fell in love. The ocean and all the boats, the lighthouse, and nature. I'd found my muse.
For the first time all night, she really smiled.
Tumblr media
Madison: Suddenly I was painting again. I talked to my mom and during the 2 weeks we were here she helped me find an affordable place and I set my date to move.
But the smile faded just as quickly as it appeared.
Madison: When I got back I was so excited to tell Paris. I shouldn't have been. She threw a fit, Paris style of course. Said I was "abandoning her for some talentless tree huggers". She didn't talk to me the whole month I was preparing to move.
She looked down at her hands. While telling the story, she felt embarrassed about how she had allowed Paris to treat her over the tenure of their friendship.
Tumblr media
Madison: She..she stopped by the day I was leaving just to drop off a painting I made for her. Said she didn't need it anymore. She dropped it in the street by my stuff and left. I was in Brindelton Bay for 2 weeks without hearing from her. On my third week here I found her on my doorstep with a suitcase.
She went into detail about Paris's drinking and partying habits. How she would bring different guys home nearly every night. She finally got to when Paris got the job at Bay's Robotic Engineers.
Madison: Paris was always good at building things. It kind of runs in the family seeing how her father builds rockets for a living. When she left home she came with no plan. Her mother was furious, but her father made a few phone calls and the next morning she landed the internship. I thought it was the best thing ever. A way to get her out of the house doing something other than drinking.
Tumblr media
She explained how amazing the first 2 months were. Paris had seemed to be on track to securing the job and making a real life for herself in Brindelton Bay.
Madison: Or so I thought. At the end of summer, she came home after work rambling about some guy at work. Apparently, he was the head of the mechanical engineering department and was returning from leave. They assigned him to train her. She wouldn't stop talking about him. Every day got worse until they sent them on a business trip together.
Madison told Beckett about the trip based on what Paris had shared.
Beckett: Sounds like your friend is looking for trouble. If this guy is married and made it clear he was uninterested why go to all the trouble.
Madison shook her head.
Madison: I told her the same thing. You'd think she'd have learned her lesson from the first time. She's just used to getting what she wants.
She tells him about the airport and the phone call the night at the club.
Beckett: No offense but your friend sounds a little erratic.
Tumblr media
She smirked and pushed back a stray lock of hair.
Madison: What does that make me? I was her best friend for years.
Beckett: A saint.
She turned away from his intense gaze feeling her face warm.
Tumblr media
Madison: U..Until that point, I had never seen this guy. Then Pumpkin got sick and I didn't want to go to the clinic alone. By then Paris had moved into her own place. I called her and asked her to come with me. It was there that we ran into the guy. He didn't notice us so Paris told me to go over and say hi, and against my better judgment I did.
The shame started to creep in again. She started to wonder if maybe Kason was right to be mad at her for what Paris had done. She hadn't done anything to truly stop her. Had she been an accomplice?
Madison: Stupidly I didn't realize she had an ulterior motive. He turned out to be a really nice guy and you'd never believe me but he's also married to my favorite author.
Beckett: Well that was a nice turn of events.
Tumblr media
Madison: It was. He was kind and when he found out I was a fan he offered to help me and my book club meet her. We got together to plan the whole thing. That was the day we met at the cafe.
Beckett: Sounds like a decent guy. It sucks he has to put up with Paris.
Madison: Yeah well, I didn't realize that she followed me to the meeting...
Beckett: Followed you?
Tumblr media
Madison: No, nothing like that. I invited her to be polite, but I knew she would never come. Paris hates reading anything that isn't a wine label.
She scoffed sarcastically.
Beckett: You're funny.
He smiled trying to lighten the mood. She grinned back sadly.
Madison: What's not funny is she took pictures of me and Kason and posted the damned things online. Now his wife thinks we're sleeping together. Which we obviously are not. But because of that, he hates me, which I can't say I blame him for. It's not like I warned him or even told him I knew Paris. I kept telling myself I would tell him before it blew up in my face I just couldn't find the time. But I knew how much Paris hated Mercury, I should have seen this coming.
Finally, she stopped her rant to take a breath.
Beckett: Mercury?
Tumblr media
But Madison hadn't heard him. She was off on another tangent
Madison: He's going to cancel the event. All the work they put into this and they won't even get to meet their favorite author because of me.
All the pieces fell into place, the puzzle becoming whole for Beckett.
Beckett: Are you talking about Mercury and Kason Gratz? Like Mercury the writer?
Madison: I never told you who my favorite author was did I.
Tumblr media
Beckett: Show me the pictures.
She stared up at him her eyes filled with hurt and confusion.
Madison: Beckett I swear there's nothing to see.
Tumblr media
Beckett soothed her unease, figuring she had misunderstood his reasons for asking to see the photos.
Beckett: I believe you. But please, I need to see the pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beckett: That's Kason and Comet.
Madison: How did you know the dog's name?
He hesitates for a second before answering
Beckett: Kason is my brother-in-law.
Madison: Your.. brother....in-law.
She shook her head with wide eyes.
Madison: There's no way...
Beckett: Mercury is my older sister.

Hello and welcome to the TaleTime Legacy Challenge, an Interactive legacy which is based on literature genres and consists of 10 generations.
Being an interactive legacy means most of the generations have few options to choose from. Options from the same gen have a common theme but different rules and stories that I created "in style" of certain literature genres. Сhoosing a certain option may lead to a storyline that cannot be reached otherwise. So while taking a specific path be aware that some later gens' options might NOT be available for you any more.
The stories prior to every single option are NOT meant to be perceived literally as a description of your character's life. It suppose to give you a setting and vibe that is inherent in this particular storyline. Purely for additional inspiration and fun.
Short disclaimer: English is not my native language so I'm sorry in advance for any grammatical mistakes.
General rules:
You can play on any lifespan (but I suggest playing on Normal one).
You can use any money/real estate cheats (unless generation's rules state otherwise).
You can live wherever you want, with your parents/sibilings or without them (unless it's specified in the generation's rules).
You DON'T have to complete career and aspiration (unless it's said in the generation's rules).
Almost each generation starts when the heir becomes Young Adult.
There are more details about heirs at the end of each gens' description. Make sure you read it BEFORE starting the next generation.
There are main rules for each generation and optional ones. You can choose any of the optional rules to complete or just ignore them.
Many gens have only two necessary traits for your character which means YOU have to choose the other trait or spin the "random wheel". Same goes for career and aspiration if they are not stated.
This legacy was created using content from many packs. If you don't have some of the required sims packs, you can adjust some rules to still be able to play.
Keep in mind that I added a few variations to some of the gens' rules so it contains options from different packs or a base game. You can choose to accomplish all of them or pick the one that is more available and/or preferable to you.
You DON'T have to complete all of the options given for each generation. The goal is to choose ONE heir from the kids and play the specific option that is dedicated for this heir. You DON'T have to play with their sibilings and complete their options as well.
The most important rule:
NO RULES! It's meant to be fun and enjoyable. If you don't wanna do something or wanna do it the other way around, then don't force some rules upon yourself. It's more of a guideline anyway!
Btw: tag of the challenge is #TaleTimeLegacyChallenge. Hope you'll enjoy it!
(I'm curently working on some visual chart for this legacy to make it easier for players to keep track of all the generation's options. Stay tuned!)

Gen 1. The Tale of Hoods and Fairy Creatures
Once upon a time there was a Sim. The Sim was young, friendly and simply the most cheerful human being who was ever seen. The Sim didn't have any parents - for they were just a poor little orphan - but they had a grandparent and a best friend who was always near their side. This friend was the most enchanting talking animal though none of the folk have ever hear them talk. One day the charming Sim took their charming friend to explore what lies beyond the woods and find a good place to start a new exciting life. Many misfortunes they met on their way but nothing could break their young and sincere spirit. After all adventures they finally discovered a perfect cozy village where they decided to stay and make even more great friends. And they lived happily ever after… or didn't they…?

Some witnesses described them as violent and intimidating armed people who were trying to rob a shopping centre in Magnolia Promenade. Tumblr media
Gen 3.1 Remember Sunny the Tragic Clown
Today I decided to practice my new performance at the local park. Perhaps, testing something new for the first time in front of a big crowd wasn't the smartest decision... but anyway, it doesn't matter now. Long story short, I tried to execute some fruit juggling. It was going rather well at first, but then all of a sudden this treacherous banana slipped right out of my hands! And, of course, the next second, in my oversized shoes, I slipped on a banana peel and plopped on the ground. I hit my nose on the sidewalk so hard that tears came out of my eyes. But guess what? Nobody was upset! Instead everyone was laughing and giggling at my awkward drop. They thought it was part of the show! So I decided to rename the entry - now it's called Tears of a Clown!
Plot (aka rules):
Traits: Gloomy, Cringe/Clumsy
Aspiration: Joke Star
Career: Entertainer (Comedian)
have a Tragic Clown painting in your house
befriend a Tragic Clown
visit every Humor and Hijinks festival (if possible)
marry someone who was your childhood friend
have two kids (one with Art Lover trait, another Lazy in no particular order)
complete Joke Star aspiration
reach level 7 in your career
master Comedy skill
Optionally:
maintain bad relationships with at least three of your colleagues (for some reasons you don't "fit in")
have regular tea/coffee gatherings with a Tragic Clown
The end:
Now you have to choose with whom you are going to play next. Choose one child as an heir.
If you pick Art Lover child - give them Kleptomaniac trait as well and go to Gen 4.1 A Knight in Shining Armour
If you pick Lazy child - give them Creative trait as well and go to Gen 4.2 The Fallen Kingdom
····································⊱❇⊰····································
Gen 3.2 Life as A Reaper's Joke
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life suddenly ends in the most ridiculous way... well... just start a new one! Whoever this Reaper guy is, they must be a pretty funny fella. In fact, good for them for having such a great sense of humor. Everybody needs a break from time to time. I, on the other hand, am not ready for an everlasting break yet. A silly mistake was made on my shift, I get it, so I forgive them and heading back. After all, life beholds so many opportunities!
Plot (aka rules):
Traits: Goofball, Chased by Death
Aspiration: Master Chef/Master Mixologist
Career: Tech Guru/Salaryperson then Culinary
before becoming an Adult you have to "suddenly" die and continue living as a ghost (an accidental death from the game itself is also acceptable)
as a ghost start Culinary career
ask your spouse to stay married but have a short-lived affair with someone else
have two kids (one with Art Lover trait, another Lazy in no particular order)
become enemies with Grim Reaper
as a ghost reach 5 in your Culinary career
master Programming and Cooking/Mixology skills
Optionally:
after accomplishing all the rules REBORN as your spouse's child/your kids' sibiling (it will open a "secret" option for the next gen that is only accessible with this rule execution). If you do that give this child Music Lover trait
if you decided not to choose rebirth and live as a ghost, compete Master Chef/Master Mixologist aspiration and reach level 10 in Culinary career
If you pick Music Lover child (the reborn sim) - give them Mean/Evil trait as well and go to Gen 4.3 One String to Rule Them All
Tumblr media
Gen 4.1 A Knight in Shining Armour
Draped in gleaming armor, a person was making their way through the dense thicket of the forest. They seemed focused but tired. They were looking for something. Something of a very big value. Whispers spoke of this powerful treasure, an artifact, lost for centuries in the enchanted lands of the kingdom. It was said to grant extraordinary gifts to its possessor — immortality, wisdom, limitless power... For the good of the all people, or maybe for their own ambition, who wouldn't want to own such wonder?

Gen 4.2 The Fallen Kingdom
Life of a royal heir is carefree, joyful and extremely simple. At least that's what Sim always hoped for. As a child, their life consisted of endless balls, dinner parties and other pleasant entertainments. A grand castle, adorned with intricate tapestries, has always seemed to be a safe hideaway from the worries of a difficult outside world. But, apparently, the Royal Highness is forbidden from enjoying the delights of their royal life. Suddenly, cautious but insistent knock broke into the quietude of Sim's chambers and thoughts. — Come in! — Your Grace, the Queen demands your presence...

Gen 4.3 One String to Rule Them All
In the twilight of a cozy autumn evening the cobblestone streets shimmered with the glow of torches. Warm light streamed from the tavern window on the corner of the street and laughter, music and dancing could be heard from the inside. On a small stage the bard played a cheerful brisk melody which was complemented by the clatter of heels and the clink of dishes. An instrument in the hands of the young bard was pouring a river of sonorous sounds and the voice, so strong and confident, was sweeter than the birds singing. Yet, despite their melodious charm and nimble fingers, fame and glory always seemed to dance just out of reach.
Your first living expirience made it very clear: being a nice person with a normal job and day-to-day concerns is quiet boring. You don't wanna waste your second life on these nonsense. This one is destined to be great! It's time to become a mastermind, go down in history and maybe even think about world domination...
But perhaps corrupting minds with some catchy annoying tune will be just enough... for this lifetime.

Gen 5.1 Dear Diary
Dear Diary, Today has altered my life forever. I've always fantasized about meeting my one and only, shuffled different scenarios from my favourite love stories dreaming of this unforgettable moment. I have imagined this second countless times. And then I saw Them. The most beautiful being, They entered my world ethereally like the morning sunlight making its way through the window. For a few moments my heart stopped beating. In front of me I saw an angel, a divine creature that filled everything and everyone with its light. An eternity flashed before my eyes when I finally was able to comprehend the insignificance of everything that had happened to my life up to this very second. Who would have thought that one fleeting moment could change my entire existence? With love and faith in dreams come true, Sim

Sim stood at the edge of an exquisitly decorated garden and the light breeze was murmuring among the leaves of the trees surrounding it. The afternoon was serene and soothing, yet their heart was racing. Today marked their third wedding. Staring off into the distance with an unwavering gaze full of hope, they were carried away by thoughts of two other days from their past, days so similar to this one. Exchanging vows, promising of eternal love, pledging a fairytale for life... None of these lasted long but maybe this time will be different.

Sim hated them. A seething, burning feeling has filled the entire body as soon as Sim caught a glimpse of them. Time froze in a heartbeat, and it seems like it's become difficult to breathe when anger flood the whole space around. The heart was beating at a rabid pace and Sim was ready to, quite literally, pounce on them in a rage. Ah, that unbearable feeling of their heavy gaze looking straight into the soul. Gen 6. Is anybody here?..
There was somebody outside the window, standing in the shade of the trees. The dark figure could barely be seen in the foggy grace of moonlight. The presence of this.. Thing.. filled Sim's insides with cold animal dread. The invisible stare - they sensed it with every inch of their body - was fixed directly on them, frozen in the middle of a grim living room. Hide, run away, crawl in the furthest and darkest corner of this house, vanish. Somewhere in the silence of their house, creaked the old wooden floor.
It seems like your parents cared more about their own drama in life than about you. And it certainly left a mark.. You are not crazy, you are just a little weird. I would even saу.. obsessed. With this idea of having big loving household. And maybe you're trying a little bit too hard.

Gen 7.1 Yo-Ho-Ho and a Bottle of.. Juice? Nectar?
The sky crackled with furious growl and thousands lights covered the boundless canvas of the sea. Black restless waves crashed against the hull of the majestic but shabby ship. On board, where orderly chaos reigned, an experienced crew battled marine force with knowledge of the matter. The Сaptain stood at the helm, gripping the wheel as the wind howled around them. and shouted commands breaking through the nature's cacophony. The next moment the swell crushed upon them, ready to swallow them whole. The Captain's head went under the wave and their throat filled with saltwater as the sea dragged them to its depths. A person, rolling the quill in their fingers, leaned back in the chair and wearily closed their eyes. The right words still didn't come to mind. Creator Notes:
Because of the large amount of vegetation, this world's reaches the file size of a medium one. It should still load pretty quick (a new save takes up about 1.5 min for me)
Depending on your computer's capabilities, you may need to be a bit patient with some lots loading meshes and textures since they're so close to one another This applies in particular to the two community lots hosting the rabbithole rugs [(1)Administrative Plaza and (2)Education & Research Plaza)]
Downloading the listed CC is not necessary, the archive already contains the items. Please make sure you won’t end up with duplicates as it may slow down your game.
The archive contains a file with instructions for installation in the correct folders for the .world file.
Contains recolors of the lighthouse, barn, flags, sailboats, vegetation & more.
Contains custom road & terrain textures.
No Library and Art Gallery lots.
I opted to keep the base game lighting since the custom one was turning the edges of the foundations completely black.
I strongly recommend you own all the listed EPs for a smooth and uneventful gameplay.
This world is not and won't be populated.
The edges of the map where it meets the distant terrain are -for lack of a better word- ugly. Please don’t mind that part.
Few residential lots have large backyards in order to be used with Pets.
I did not place wells on the lots. All of them are off-lot. They can be placed from buy mode, if desired.
All the houses have descriptions. Also some houses have items from WA that can only be bought during trips. Feel free to sell them if you want your sims to travel in order to obtain those items. Some LN celebrity items are also present.

Writing Masterlist - Pinned
Decided to finally give in to my urge to do further organization and finally make a masterlist. All of my writing is available on AO3 or under the tag bready’s fic, but under the cut I have links to everything organized by fandom (dbh/witcher/other) and series, as well as brief summaries.
Pairings are not ordered by top/bottom, they’re just in whatever order my brain decides when I type lol
Please read the tags on each fic on AO3 for warnings. I write a lot of AUs, some kinkfic, and a variety of content with ratings from G to E
All fics are finished unless specifically marked
Requests are closed except for special occasions - you can check my blog header to see if I’ve opened them!
---
Witcher Pairings: Geralt/Jaskier, Geralt/Jaskier/Yennefer, Eskel/Lambert, Eskel/Lambert/Cahir, Eskel/Lambert/Cahir/Aiden, Lambert/Aiden, Calanthe/Eist, Triss/Yennefer, Geralt/Everyone, Fringilla/Renfri, Cahir & Fringilla, Jaskier/&Renfri, Aiden & Renfri

Long post ahead - enjoy! :D
The Witcher: Oneshots
Geralt Has Two Hands - T, 3K, Geralt/Jaskier/Yennefer - Modern AU from Jaskier and Yennefer’s perspectives as they both try to woo a certain stoic idiot.
Witchers Don’t Get Sick - T, 1K, Geralt/Jaskier - Sickfic where Geralt really shouldn’t be allowed to function on his own

2020 Backlog Progress in Retrospect
2020 was the year of finally finishing the backlog. The final game ended up being Disco Elysium back on July 1st but in the months since I’ve built up a list again. Going forward I’m hoping to keep the backlog at 10 games or less since I’ve found I do like having a wider list of games to choose from after finishing something. After finishing over 100 games in 2020 there were a ton of classics that I finished for the first time, so many so that making a top 20 list was very difficult. I’ve always made this end of year breakdowns for my own archives but I thought it would be fun to share it this year alongside the full list of what I finished!
Top 20 of 2020 First Time Finished
1 Sakura Wars (Sega Saturn) 2 Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) 3 Dragon Quest XI S (Switch) 4 Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune & the Dice of Fate (Switch) 5 Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (PC) 6 Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC) 7 Mega Man Legends 2 (PS1) 8 Shining Force II (Genesis) 9 Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U) 10 Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) 11 Sea of Thieves (PC) 12 Phantasy Star IV (Genesis) 13 Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (Switch) 14 Shenmue (Dreamcast) 15 Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (DS) 16 killer7 (PC) 17 Moon: Remix RPG Adventure (Switch) 18 Maniac Mansion (PC) 19 ZeroRanger (PC) 20 VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action (PC)
Favorite game of 2020: Sakura Wars
Tumblr media
When I was looking back at this year, the game that stuck the most with me was easily the original Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn. Back in December of 2019 the english patch released online and I was so excited to finally be able to play the first entry in one of Sega’s biggest franchises for the first time. I had yet to play any games in the series beyond just fumbling around an import copy of various games on Saturn and Dreamcast and I was glad to be able to experience it with such a well-made fan patch. It’s a very simple strategy game mixed in with lite RPG and Dating mechanics but there’s such a great charm to how well everything mixes together. The way they mix in the animated cutscenes throughout each chapter make it feel like you’re playing a classic mid 90′s anime and it was just a nice cozy experience the whole way. I managed to play through it twice this year and tinkered around with later entrees in the series but I’m hopeful that the sequel will get picked up as a fan translation project soon, otherwise I’ll probably be going through those games the old fashioned way with a printed out GameFAQS guide at my side.

As part of fan fiction writer appreciation day, I am taking a leaf out of @cassiopeiasara ‘s book and I have made a post of some of my favorite fics. To narrow things down a bit I’ve gone with either smaller fandoms, less-common pairings, or genfic that I particularly liked.
There are no Worst Witch recs here I’m afraid - the process of trying to whittle down the list to a small list was too daunting for trying to get this post finished for today.
Recs beneath the cut.
With the exception of the rec for The Remains of the Day (which I explain in more detail below) all of these recs are in the K-T range, going by the AO3 rating system.
Doctor Who – Genfic
Horton, the Elephant Who Waited by wshaffer; 11th Doctor
wshaffer wrote a 1200 word fic completely in Dr. Seuss-style rhyme about Horton meeting the 11th Doctor and it’s utterly delightful.
Bus to Strathclyde by The_Plaid_Slytherin; 9th Doctor
A ficlet about Nine meeting six-year-old Donna that time that she took the bus to Strathclyde. Short, sweet, and entertaining.
Murder She Wrote – half gen, half unrequited Michael Hagarty/Jessica Fletcher because let’s be honest he’s been in love with her since the moment he saw her in season 2
Tidings of Comfort and Joy by Lucy Gillam
Years after the end of the show, Michael Haggarty shows up in Jessica’s life again. Supposedly by chance. Supposedly doesn’t want anything in particular. Jessica thinks he’s lying. (She’s right).
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Rosemary Boxer
Just Two Florists at a Wedding by Wine Through Water
This is established relationship and Laura’s daughter finding out about Laura and Rosemary being together. It’s sweet and funny and includes Laura’s daughter demanding to know what Rosemary’s intentions are.
Of All The Trees That Are In The Wood by Cerberusia.
Rosemary invites Laura to spend Christmas with her. Rosemary has some awesome lesbian friends (extremely well-written and charming OCs) who end up helping Laura see that she really is in love with Rosemary. Slow burn, because Laura is so clueless.
Planting Seeds by phantom listener
This is a lovely bit of pre-ship Laura/Rosemary in which they manage to get into even more trouble without a murder case than with one. It’s charming, cozy, quite funny and in the best spirit of the show.
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Richard Oakley
Dandelions and Pimpernels  by by_no_one_more_than_me (Lady_Cleo)
Laura/Rosemary is my OTP for this show with one exception, and this fic is it. In the episode The Invisible Worm there is a professor at a school who falls head over heels for Laura and without spoilers there is something that happens between the two of them at the end of the episode that I always wished someone would write a follow-up fic about, and then Lady_Cleo did, and did a magnificent job at it.
Sense and Sensibility – Elinor Dashwood/Colonel Brandon
Christopher and Elinor by Mercy
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
This is an epistolary re-write of the entirety of Sense and Sensibility, in which Elinor and Colonel Brandon end up together. It’s one of my favorite Elinor/Brandon fics, because I love epistolary stories, because it tweaks the other characters in ways that don’t feel like a huge departure from the novel, and because it takes place over such a long period of time there’s plenty of time to develop the Elinor/Brandon relationship.
Thor Ragnorak: Bruce Banner & Valkyrie brotp
I brought a knife to a gunfight by paperclipbitch
Set between the end of the movie and the first post-credits scene, it’s Bruce and Valkyrie brotp, and I don’t think I can summarize it better than the author, who put it thus:
“I have questions,” Valkyrie says.
“I don’t want to answer them,” Bruce replies.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Iroh/Ursa
Thy Brother’s Wife by AzarDarkstar
I read this on fanfiction.net originally and was delighted to discover while putting this list together that it’s now on the AO3. This is a quiet, but evocative piece in which we glimpse into the life of Ursa, and that of Zuko, through the eyes of Iroh. This is mostly a very lovely unrequited/possibly mutual pining piece – we never see things from Ursa’s perspective. There’s no infidelity, and it’s surprisingly canon-compliant.
The Remains of the Day - Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens
I love this book, and the Merchant-Ivory film version, and as much as I love the way the story originally goes I also desperately ship Miss Kenton and Mr. Stevens.
thisiszircon, who used to be on LiveJournal but is now on Dreamwidth (the name links to the stevens/kenton tag on their dreamwidth) has written the best Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens fanfic I’ve found anywhere and I can recommend all of their stories. Thisiszircon really understands the characters and does slow burn like nobody’s business. And a bunch of the fics are really quite long, which is a delight.
A number of the fics are in first person but I don’t actually find this to be a problem because a) they’re very well done, and b) the book itself is of course in first person. Some of these stories are R/M rated but all the ones I have read have taken a long time to get to R/M, are quite obvious about when they’re going to head into that territory, and you can either stop there if you want or scroll quite a bit past and then just carefully scroll your way back up until you’re at a point that makes sense, if like me you avoid sex scenes.
Common Ground (Part one can be found here) is one of my favorites - it takes the book scene (from the movie), alters it a little to open up the possibility for more dialogue, and settles you in for a long, slow burn. Common Ground is rated R but it takes quite a long time before it gets to R territory, if I recall correctly.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #46
Yeah, it’s been more than a week. Hush now and enjoy the super ridiculously long list of recs. I made this for you.
Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. Also follow @maychorianrecs for individually tagged posts, the easier to search and reblog. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!
A Long Time Ago (We Used To Be Friends) by Mikiri Words: 32,580 Author’s Summary: Originally Keith was supposed to have been Shiro’s copilot for the Kerberos Mission. They bonded over the thought of being on a mission together. But that all fell down the drain when something was found wrong with his blood. The fall out of the mission failure changed Keith forever. My Comments: Really interesting idea for an AU, and the story did such a good job of building up the team of Matt, Sam, Keith, and Shiro that it hurt like the dickens to have that all torn away in the end.
Lay To Waste by Demenior, wrecked_anon Words: 41,303 Author’s Summary: What was meant to be a simple mission— make contact with the Rebellion and form an alliance— goes horribly awry. Now the team is split up, the Galra are invading, and Shiro’s past may prove to be their greatest adversary yet. OR When you have skeletons in your closet, you hope they stay dead. My Comments: I’ve read and recced stories in this series before, so I knew before I read it that it was going to be amazing, but also have moments of pretty awful horror that I would have to steel myself for. And that’s completely true. The worldbuilding is fantastic, and this author always does such a great job of making Voltron feel like SCIFI, rather than a space fantasy, which is cool. The aliens are so ALIEN, and the new cultures and characters you meet are all so fascinating and so well-conceptualized. It’s just great, great stuff, but yeah, brace yourself from some horrific scenes.
of beasts and men by nowweareunstoppable Words: 14,430 (½) Author’s Summary: (werewolves & ghouls & witches, oh my!) It hurt, but it hurt like a lightning strike must; so powerful that the pain of it is overshadowed by the sheer momentum of the act. She was an explosion, but instead of coming apart, she was converging again into something more than the previous sum of her parts. Pidge came back with the taste of copper on her tongue and panic pulsing inside of her. My Comments: Absolutely fabulous urban fantasy AU with Pidge stumbling in far over her head and werewolf Shiro sacrificing just about everything to save her. Action-packed, edge-of-the-seat thrill ride. I want the rest really bad.
Hazy by haleyislametbh Words: 2,102 Author’s Summary: Some days, Lance’s ADHD doesn’t seem to bother him much. Today is not one of those days. My Comments: This feels really in-character, though it’s not my particular headcanon. Great stuff.
Try Everything by oldmythologies Words: 1,510 Author’s Summary: In which Lance believes that anything is a lullaby if you sing it soft enough <3 My Comments: Shance hinted at the end but reads platonic to me. Really sweet modern AU in which Lance doesn’t know his roommate Shiro very well, but still tries to gently sing him awake when he has a nightmare.
See The Light by itbepansam Words: 1,591 Author’s Summary: The team escapes from a dangerous mission and after one of the team members gets hurt, they decide to all form a huge cuddle pile My Comments: Cuddle piles are always good.
Build on Shaky Ground by Engineer104 Words: 3,337 Author’s Summary: Sometimes Lance dangles the carrot of friendship in front of Pidge’s face; sometimes Pidge refuses to take a bite For Pidge Ship Week, Day 1: Trust Comments: Tagged as possible romantic Plance but can be read platonic. I like fics that treat platonic relationships with all the depth and complexities of romantic relationships. A lot. Nothing is really resolved at the end of this one, but you can see the threads of friendship starting to be woven between them, and that’s beautiful.
Dirt and Dried Blood by hufflepirate Words: 14,637 Author’s Summary: Coran doesn’t know exactly what happened out there. He just knows the other paladins brought the princess back bloody and half-dead. Allura remembers being left behind, but she doesn’t remember making it home. Sometimes getting back on your feet requires a little more than a healing pod, but they both know he’s going to be there for her every step of the way. My Comments: Absolutely fabulous fic centered on characters who don’t get nearly enough attention. Great hurt/comfort scenes, great emotions, great characterization and backstory. A pleasure to read from start to finish.
Triumph or Death by ashitanoyuki for Wisttic Words: 3,562 Author’s Summary: Haxus did not die when he fell from the generator room catwalk. His survival presents an opportunity to gather useful information for the Galra Empire. My Comments: Great outsider perspective on the crew, and it even had me rooting for Haxus, at least his survival. Fun read.
Prison Toys by PastelClark Words: 3,452 Author’s Summary: When the mission crew of Shirogane, Holt, Holt, and McClain doesn’t come back from Kerberos, the world decides their ship crashed. Pidge decides it’s all bullshit. She’s not the only one. (In which Pidge lives inside her own head, Lance’s older sister was the fourth Kerberos crew member, everyone has something to lose, and no one is handling this well.) My Comments: Heartbreaking, but fascinating look at how Lance and Pidge’s dynamic changes when he’s dealing with loss, too. They both want to get to space so, so badly, yet they seem to work at cross purposes much of the time.
Starting to Unwind by HapaxLegomenon Words: 1,331 Author’s Summary: “We decided,” Lance says, “that you need a day off.” Shiro immediately stiffens. “We don’t have time –” “Yes we do,” Pidge says firmly. “We already cleared it with the Princess and Coran – who said it was a great idea, by the way – so no training, no leader-ing, no worrying, just relax and let us take care of you for once, okay?” Or; Shiro works too hard, and the other paladins encourage him to take a break. My Comments: Aw, everyone taking care of Shiro is so sweet.
Existing by prettyshiroic (AnalystProductions) Words: 6,929 Author’s Summary: It’s not just pain that sweeps into his life uninvited and without ceremony. At first it is. But something else came with it too. Well. Many things. But they’re a mild annoyance. Keith doesn’t like to complain and grumble, so their presence is written off as ghostly. Haunting him from time to time, and that’s as far as he lets the interaction go. Then there’s this. This thing. It made conversations difficult and hard to follow, made words uncomfortable in his mouth. It stripped him of basic comprehension skills at the best of times, sentences on a page clearly there but entirely lost to him. At the worst of times, it strips him of much more than that. Existence at the expense of everything else. My Comments: It doesn’t seem fair, with all of Keith’s canon difficulties, for him to also have to deal with chronic pain. But well, life isn’t fair, is it? That’s part of the point of this fic. The other part is Keith learning to accept support, and the others all being happy to provide it. Achy fic (literally and figuratively) with a great conclusion.
Nesting by isabeau25 Words: 5,635 Author’s Summary: Keith takes a chance on building a permanent nest. The rest of the team approves. My Comments: Part of a very well-realized and adorable wingfic AU. Keith’s nervousness about making something permanent after wandering for his whole life is so palpable and understandable, and everyone’s support is just lovely. A comforting fic, it makes me feel cozy and warm.
Cat in the Sun by isabeau25 Words: 3,048 Author’s Summary: Shiro was just out for a jog. He hadn’t planned on buying a restaurant. My Comments: I didn’t know I needed a platonic coffee shop AU! This was relaxing to read, and the descriptions are idyllic and charming. If I were Shiro, I’d want to buy this run-down property, too. This is the first of a series, and I’m definitely looking forward to more.
Young Blood by Emerald_Ashes Words: 2,268 (1/?) Author’s Summary: Shiro is still missing. A mission in hopes to rescue him go terribly wrong and the team is led into a trap. While they manage to escape, not everyone makes it out unscathed. My Comments: Deaged Keith in Galra form! Lance is a wonderful caretaker already. I’m really looking forward to reading this one as it develops.
Words Fail by EagleInFlight Words: 23,057 (6/?) Author’s Summary: A mind-melding exercise goes wrong, and the five Paladins are now trapped in Lance’s mind. To escape, they must delve through Lance’s memories. Lance learns that in order to save his friends, he has to stop running. But to stop running means to face the worst of himself. My Comments: I really loved the way this fic dealt with Lance’s memories and how the other paladins reacted to them. They all go on a separate little journey with Lance, and it feels very in-character, very emotional and heartwrenching. I’m glad Shiro was there at the time he was, in particular. I’m looking forward to the conclusion a lot.
Reload by Uniasus Words: 9,837 Author’s Summary: Shiro always knew he drew attention as a Galra prisoner, from the soldiers, the other slaves, Zarkon and Haggar. But he never knew the result of it. Now that Black’s refusing to fly with him, Shiro’s determined to figure out what exactly the Galra did. My Comments: Really interesting and well-written Post-Season Three fic that DOESN’T go with the clone hypothesis. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in this one very much. Really great concepts and characterization all around.
Let’s Find The Good We Knew Before by kyanve for Mikiri Words: 6,290 Author’s Summary: By dumb coincidence, Katie ends up witness to Keith’s exit from the Garrison before she’s prepared her identity as Pidge, and decides to get involved. My Comments: Great slight canon divergence fic with Keith and Pidge forming the salty younger sibling team they were always meant to be, just a little quicker than canon. A lot of pain, a lot of heartache there, but they are definitely good for each other.
There’s not such a thing as too many Shiros by RukiaG Words: 1,081 Author’s Summary: Shiro has a clone. That’s something everyone knows and has accepted by now. However, it turns out the Galra made several clones of him, so what will Team Voltron do with all those clones? Adopt them, of course. My Comments: Some adorable crack in which everyone makes plans to adopt a Shiro clone and give them silly names.
Normal by Zurela Words: 6,506 Author’s Summary: Lance and Keith survived isolation on a mysterious planet, but that doesn’t mean everything is automatically okay. Unable to hear and confronted with traumatic memories, Lance and the team do their best to get things back to normal. My Comments: Great follow-up to a previously recced fic. This is some very well done aftermath and recovery. Lance has received a permanent injury, and that’s treated with proper weight, but there’s a lot of hope in there too. And the team is wonderfully supportive. Klance, but everyone gets a lovely moment. I especially loved Allura and Coran. They said some very important stuff. It made me think as well as filling my heart with fuzzy warmth.
Numbers by oldmythologies Words: 1,222 Author’s Summary: Shiro would hate it. He would hate knowing that Keith heard him scream sometimes, that Keith knew that he wasn’t completely okay. He’d feel weak, and he’d hide behind his speeches and his optimism and would be ever more careful about where and when he let himself fall asleep. The cry reaches him from behind the door. It sounds like a child, and god, that child is so afraid. This time, Keith doesn’t hesitate to open the door. My Comments: Sweet and simple fic with Keith comforting Shiro after a nightmare.
The Silly Song by StormySeaWitch Words: 1,605 Author’s Summary: Inspired by Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) It’s amazing what kinds of odd Earth things you can find in space malls. My Comments: Very cute fic with Team Voltron just having fun together for once. It made me grin like a little kid.
The Phoenix by 00AwkwardPenguin00 Words: 5,543 Author’s Summary: In which Ulaz is furious (and about to be sick), Shiro and Keith are suspicious, Thace is appointed Chief Babysitter (and is a boss at it), and Lance is hungry. AKA the first oneshot of a triple AU that literally nobody asked for. My Comments: This AU is hitting a LOT of my buttons. In a world where some people can shapeshift into animals, all five Voltron kids have been locked up in Haggar’s lab and forced to undergo horrible things. Most of them are deaged to some extent, and they are incredibly frightened and protective of each other. Enter Thace and Ulaz as FBI agents who clean out the lab and take the kids under their protection. I’m really REALLY looking forward to more of this series.
Not a Feather Out of Place by isabeau25 Words: 1,271 Author’s Summary: Shiro needs some help preening his wings, but it’s often times easier said then done. My Comments: Very cute wingfic with Keith and Lance working together to soothe Shiro and provide necessary grooming without setting off his PTSD. They’re so lovely. And it’s the first of a series, so you should probably subscribe now.
Small Comforts by EdgarAllenPoet for KatherineKatie Words: 5,652 Author’s Summary: “You needed rest. I was providing comfort.” My Comments: Wonderful Dads of Marmora fic with the theme of Kolivan grooming Keith in various scenarios. The first two are very fluffy, but the last one is not. It made my heart ache in a good way. A good, good way.
Warmth by bookwormgir1LH Words: 2,226 Author’s Summary: Stranded on an alien planet after a crash, Pidge and Hunk struggle to survive. Cuddle number 6: For warmth My Comments: Sweet and good. Huddling for warmth is always a winner.
The Void Stares Back by aleria Words: 8,210 Author’s Summary: The darkness in front of her was so real, she wanted to reach out and touch it. My Comments: Creepy and atmospheric exploration of a Lovecraftian horror scenario. Pidge just wants to understand, but sometimes you don’t get answers.
Light it Up by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 13,398 Author’s Summary: After the events of Spark to Ignite, Shiro picks up the pieces. My Comments: Fluffy and wonderful aftermath and recovery fic, perfect follow-up to a fic I previously recced. You should read it all, but basically Shiro was locked in the dark for several days and ended up smashing up his prosthetic arm in his (completely justified) panic, so now he has major adjustments to do while Hunk and Pidge figure out a replacement. Plus he’s scared of the dark and feels embarrassed about it. So yeah anyway this fic is perfect and there’s lots of cuddling, I love it. You probably will, too.
Previously Recced Fics That Updated:
Bromances in Space (27976 words) Coran's Guide to the Care and Keeping of Earthling Humans (35293 words) The Ones Who Were Left Behind (52377 words) Defying the Odds (28643 words) As Color Fades Away (149703 words) The Machinations of Perception (55318 words)  - now complete Ten Days (64896 words) Taking One For The Team (30581 words) Little Crystals (4511 words) Gate Keeper (95943 words)

Mon coloc Thibault me l’a conseillé, je te salue garçon.
Kisu ~

DualShockers’ Favorite Video Games of 2020 (So Far)
July 31, 2020 1:00 PM EST
Now that we’re halfway through 2020, the DualShockers staff shares the games that have been the highlights of the year so far.
As we’ve already seen so far, 2020 has been a very unusual year for video games. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused numerous delays and cancelled most of the events that we’d traditionally see during the year for the games industry, this year has still brought us a ton of gaming experiences worth celebrating and sharing. Given that the next-gen consoles are on the horizon later this year, the first half of 2020 has already had some generation-defining games worth playing, and we still have several months to go for 2020.
Now that the first half of the year is behind us, the DualShockers staff has gathered together to share some of our favorite games of 2020 so far. While we’ve already discussed a lot of the games that we’re considering for our Game of the Year awards for this year, this time around we’re focusing on each staff member’s highlights for games that have been released in the first half of 2020. From some of the most acclaimed games of the year to hidden gems that are worth a look, here are the games that DualShockers‘ staff have made 2020 an exciting year for video games.
Nick Blain, Video Editor
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
New Horizons was the first Animal Crossing game that I’ve committed to since the original back on the GameCube, and I adore it. It really makes no sense why I like it. The tasks are menial and there’s no central objective to accomplish. Yet, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the most I’ve ever been invested in the series yet. I find myself getting lost in the charm of its harmonious world. There’s just something about the mainline Animal Crossing games’ design that is always so cozy. For a brief couple of hours I can forget the outside world and be lost in its brilliance. Animal Crossing makes things feel normal.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
I have a weird confession to make: while I love Final Fantasy as series, I never found Final Fantasy VII to be all that compelling. Even replaying the original before the remake came out, I found it to be a chore at some parts, so my expectations for the remake weren’t extremely high. Playing through it, I couldn’t have been more wrong. The little things that Final Fantasy VII Remake does to flesh out the characters and overall world help give so much more context to even the original Final Fantasy VII. At times, it feels like it’s not only paying homage to what came before it, but also feels like an FFVII sequel unto itself. Much like the RE2 remake that came out last year, Final Fantasy VII Remake proves that a remake can be more than just a glossy new coat of paint; it can also be a re-evaluation of what came before.
The Last of Us Part II
What can I say that hasn’t already been said about this amazing game? The Last of Us Part II is just as grueling of a tale as what came before. Never has a game actually made me feel bad for fulfilling a QTE. Although, underneath that rough exterior is a beautiful inspection of love, pain, and sacrifice. At the end of The Last of Us, I felt that I had seen the end of the story and was absolutely fine with it. However, Naughty Dog proved that there was a significantly more meaningful story to delve into with Joel and Ellie. If they felt that they have more story to tell I’m here for it; but again, I don’t think that there has to be.
What I admire about Naughty Dog is that if there’s nothing left to say: that’s it. Chapter over, book closed. You can just tell the passion that was behind the team at Naughty Dog when they were developing this game. Naughty Dog is really proving that video games can be more than they set out to be initially. I can’t wait for more.

Deep Rock Galactic
“Dwarves in Space.” Anything you can think of that would fit that phrase, Deep Rock Galactic embodies. It’s a four player co-op game where you pick a class and go on an alien mining expedition. You’ll navigate (or dig) procedurally-generated tunnels, find the resources or objectives you seek, defend yourself against angry alien bugs, and then get out. Extracting gets you a cut of the rewards, with which you can level up your classes, upgrade equipment, and customise your appearance further. Then you have a drink with your mates on the space station before doing it all again.
It might not sound like much on paper, but in practice? Deep Rock Galactic is something else. The passion and creativity of the devs is on full display, as they’ve filled the game with a ton of nuance and little details for you to find. Its graphics and sound design are well presented and stylised to suit, and the different environments are extremely well realised and fun to explore or dig through. Even with a strong core gameplay loop, there’s a decent chunk of variety in objectives. There’s also public games and solo options for those not interested in the co-op aspect, so if any of this looks or sounds interesting to you? Check it out. You won’t be disappointed. Rock and Stone, brothers!
DOOM Eternal
I’m rarely the sort to replay games often, mainly because I just never have the time. Imagine my surprise when I found myself replaying DOOM Eternal the day after I finished it. Any flaws in the game’s platforming or level design fades away the second that the music amps up and an intense combat scenario begins. Then there is nothing except an intricately designed dance of death, in which I am encouraged to use every tool at my disposal to rip and tear. Always pressured and always right on the verge of death and defeat, yet still always feeling powerful and with the means to turn the tide and raze hell. DOOM Eternal’s combat is absolutely phenomenal, and just writing about it now makes me want to start it up yet again.
Despite the controversies surrounding Mick Gordon and Denuvo, DOOM Eternal remains a highlight for me this year. I’m even one of the people who thinks that DOOM 2016 is actually the better overall package, but the sheer intensity of the combat in Eternal is like a drug that makes it impossible to go back to its predecessor. Kar en Tuk! Until it is done!
Hades
Supergiant Games have yet to deliver a bad game; in fact, Hades puts them at four for four in making excellent games that stand tall in my personal pantheon of favourites. It’s an action/roguelike where you play as Zagreus, son of Hades, on his quest to escape the Underworld of Greek mythology. And it is awesome. The combat is fluid and has impact to it from the very start, and that only gets more intense as you gain more upgrades and unlocks. The story and characters are engaging, and the entire thing is packaged with the usual Supergiant art, music, voice and style, which is to say that it is superb.
The game is still in Early Access, but since the launch version is due out this year, Hades absolutely counts for my GOTY 2020 considerations. Even then, there was a ton of content and variety even in the first iterations, and every major patch has expanded that dramatically. So far, it leads the pack by a country mile as my favourite. Hades is the most playable, content dense game that Supergiant has ever put out. If Dead Cells is the benchmark for what roguelikes aim to be, Hades is already past that and pushing higher still. “Godlike” is the only fitting descriptor.
Ricky Frech, Senior Staff Writer
Desperados 3
I will continue to beat the drum for what is, thus far, the best game I’ve played in 2020. Desperados 3 is a stealth-focused tactics game with sublime level design. The care developer that Mimimi Games put into crafting each level is astounding. As you lead a gruff band of Wild West mercenaries, you’ll take part in some of the most memorable sequences I’ve seen in the tactics space.
Every level feels unique. This is largely done by how Mimimi mixes up your party. Your squad is made up of five diverse characters; however, you almost never get to bring them all into battle at once. Instead, each mission gives you a unique combination and forces you to constantly adapt your playstyle to your team’s abilities. It’s a beautiful design that kept a smile on my face throughout the entire campaign.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
I was very tempted to put Deadly Premonition 2 in my final slot. I love that game in spite of its many problems; however, it’s a tough one to recommend for several reasons. Another game that I heavily considered for this final slot is Murder by Numbers. It’s the best Picross game since Picross 3D, but it’s a niche genre that non-Picross fans are unlikely to check out.
Instead, let’s talk about a game that isn’t even technically out yet. I was lucky enough to play the beta for Mediatonic’s Fall Guys recently. It’s the most fun I’ve had playing a game since Gang Beasts, but takes it to a completely different level. As someone who grew up on Most Extreme Elimination and the vastly superior Japanese version of Ninja Warrior, Fall Guys’ brand of wacky game show antics really speaks to me. All it’s missing is Vic and Kenny’s hilarious commentary.
So, make sure to join me next week when it launches as part of August’s PS+ lineup (and also when it comes to PC). You won’t regret it.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Even in adding combat, Ori and the Will of the Wisps controls just as tightly as the original. Just moving through a level in this game is pure bliss. There are a handful of sections I didn’t love, but for the most part, developer Moon Studios absolutely nail gameplay.
However, that’s not why it makes my shortlist. Will of the Wisps is one of the more emotional stories I’ve played through in games. There aren’t many characters I’ve cared about more than that stupid bird. And I’m petrified of birds in real-life. Getting me to consider something with feathers as a friend is a big move. Plus, the game looks absolutely gorgeous. It’s a must-play.
David Gill, Staff Writer
Ghost of Tsushima
Ever since its announcement in 2017, I was so excited to play Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises are some of my favorite PlayStation exclusives, and I was interested to see what the developer would do next. From the moment I started rolling credits, I was so invested in Ghost of Tsushima and exploring Tsushima island even further.
One of the main things I love about this game is exploring the world and everything in it. There would be days where I didn’t do any story missions and just focused on side quests, raiding Mongol territory, and looking for collectibles. The game’s story went in directions I didn’t expect and I was always curious to see where it went. Sucker Punch also added cool mechanics such as the wind guiding you in the direction of your objective, which makes the game even more unique from others out there. You also can’t talk about the game without mentioning its gorgeous visuals that are just made for photo mode. After finishing Ghost of Tsushima, all I want to do is explore more, upgrade my skills, and get the platinum trophy. It’s up there with The Last of Us Part II as one of the best PlayStation exclusives and an amazing way to close out the current console generation.
The Last of Us Part II
With 2013’s The Last of Us being my favorite game of all time, my anticipation for The Last of Us Part II was high. I tried keeping an open mind and not letting my expectations getting the best of me. After finishing it four days after its release, The Last of Us Part II impacted me in ways I didn’t see coming.
The game took so many risks in telling its story, and I commend Naughty Dog for that. There were moments where I felt disconnected from the narrative but it ultimately succeeded in telling a story that’s multilayered and could be looked at through several different perspectives. On top of that, the game’s graphics are gorgeous, and in scope it is larger than any Naughty Dog game before. There are so many collectibles and environmental storytelling moments going on, and I couldn’t help but explore every area. Additionally, the game’s combat is better than ever and throws challenges at the player with almost every encounter. While The Last of Us Part II may not be for everyone, it’s one of very few games this year that I couldn’t stop thinking about days after I finished it.
Persona 5 Royal
Over the past few years, Persona 5 has been one of the games I’ve been meaning to play. It wasn’t until Persona 5 Royal released in March where I decided to finally play it. After reaching the credits in 80 hours, Persona 5 Royal is currently my favorite game of 2020, if not one of my favorite games of all time.
From its amazing story and characters to its incredible sense of style, Persona 5 Royal has so many things going for it. On top of that, there are so many side activities to do which make time go by so quickly. The game also has its amazing Confidant system that ties together your relationships with other characters and your main character’s progression. The game also features great writing and music you can’t help but jam to at times. While Persona 5 Royal’s length may turn some people off, it puts you on a journey you won’t regret taking.
Cameron Hawkins, Staff Writer
Final Fantasy VII Remake
The original Final Fantasy VII is one of my favorite games of all time, and Final Fantasy VII Remake has been one my most anticipated titles since its announcement back in 2015. Leading up to its release, Square Enix seemed shaky to say the least when it came to the development cycle of other previous big titles like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, with Remake showing similar signs. Thankfully though, Remake was not in the same boat.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is arguably the best JRPG of this generation, and it may be my favorite game in general this generation once the new consoles hit shelves later this year. Square Enix was able to recreate a game that is so special to so many hearts that they easily could have messed up, but they didn’t. The characters are stunning, Midgar is beautiful even during the most dreadful times, and the combat system blends the best parts of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts‘ gameplay into one. Despite some minuscule setbacks, being able to reestablish such a beloved title that will give both new and old players different things to be compelled by is an incredible achievement that we haven’t seen in gaming before. It deserves all the praise it has been getting and more.
The Last of Us Part II
I’m not a big fan of The Last of Us. I think the original game is overrated and a lot of things that it gets praised for other games did beforehand and better, but I enjoyed my time with The Last of Us Part II. It was different and took some interesting narrative risks that worked in its favor in some areas and hurt it in others. I have issues with the level design and how Naughty Dog wanted you to explore around Seattle, but the main reason I picked up The Last of Us Part II is for the story.
This sequel feels like a worthy (and better) follow-up to its predecessor. In the original, I had issues regarding certain character choices that most of who I talk to normally don’t agree with. But in The Last of Us Part II, I felt validated that my issues were an important part of the narrative throughout. At the end of the day, I found the story to be memorable with a lot to unpack. I just wish I didn’t have so many general issues with the game at ground level, or else I would have placed it on a higher pedestal.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
I never thought I would see the day where my favorite Wii U title would get a second chance at life. Even with being a remastered port, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is currently my favorite Nintendo Switch title. For some, the direction of teenage Japanese idols may turn you off, but that is just the face of a wonderfully fun and engaging JRPG. Being originally made by Atlus for the Wii U, it doesn’t meet the standards that people know from Persona 5, but there are aspects of Tokyo Mirage Sessions that I like over Persona. The combat system is diverse and addictive at times, the puzzles can give you a real challenge, and of course it oozes that Atlus charm.
It is a beautiful homage to the Fire Emblem franchise, telling a Fire Emblem story in a completely new way while still having the Atlus vision behind it. If you love Persona, play Tokyo Mirage Sessions. If you love Fire Emblem, play Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Unless you don’t like JRPGs, you should play Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Allisa James, Senior Staff Writer
Final Fantasy VII Remake
This game has absolutely captured me from the first moment I played it. Expanding on the entirety of the Midgar section from the original Final Fantasy VII, FFVII Remake offers a crazy deep dive that fleshes out every last component. The expansions made to the plot managed to create more intrigue and better convey the inner workings of Shinra and the various villains. In turn, the heroes have more chances to shine as they spend more time cooperating with each other while expanding their team and character dynamics. The Avalanche members Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge are fleshed out themselves and actually feel like real people, making their (most likely) tragic fates even more poignant. The setting has never felt more alive with tons of shops, NPCs constantly scurrying around and chatting about their daily lives and current events, and side quests that give the residents agency and personality. And all of this is rounded out by some stellar voice work.
This isn’t even mentioning the action/turn-based blended combat system that requires strategy to prevail (and will crush you for button spamming). The revamped combat system in FFVII Remake features tons of combo creation that relies on both an intimate knowledge of each attacks’ timing and on quick reflexes to build those chains in the first place. There’s also an incredible amount of weapon and Materia build customization options for players, depending on the roles you want each character to take on.
Persona 5 Royal
Pushing past the dense pacing before Okumura’s Palace, Royal offers everything you could ever ask for in an updated re-release. It introduced sorely needed gameplay balances, brand new mechanics that liven up and condense otherwise boring dungeon layouts, revamped boss battles, and added tons of new minigames. That’s aside from the fact that there is a new prefecture to explore, it introduced two new characters and added more Confidants, completely overhauled a pre-existing Confidant, added brand new events, added a new school semester and an new dungeon coupled with two new endings, more voice work, and more. The sheer amount of new content in Persona 5 Royal is staggering and shows how much work Atlus put into this title to make an already amazing game even better.
Pokemon Sword and Shield: Isle of Armor
The first of two DLC packs releasing this year for the brand new main entries in the Pokemon franchise, the Isle of Armor expansion features tons of new content as well. More Pokemon are introduced in the National Dex, there’s a fun introductory plot that also brings in your (self-proclaimed) rival and gym leader hopeful, a huge island filled with secrets and hidden areas to explore, item fusion, and new Gigantamax forms.
The best part of Isle of Armor is getting to train up an adorable Pokemon named Kubfu. This Pokemon will let you take part in the Towers of Two Fists challenges and completing one of them — the Tower of Darkness or Tower of Waters — will evolve your Kubfu into Urshifu. The Tower you choose will determine Urshifu’s fighting style, with each style having its own moveset and strengths. For Pokemon fans, the first DLC expansion is guaranteed to keep you entertained for hours while making you wish for the upcoming Crown Tundra pack even more.

F1 2020
I’m not a big fan of Formula 1 tournaments in the real world, as I know very little about the sport’s leading teams and basic rules. But when I got the chance to play F1 2020 this year, it started to turn me into a Formula 1 professional fan. It even got to the point that I began reading about the history of the sport, dig up its current teams, and follow the live real-world races of Formula 1.
Of course, if you put a lot of time on a certain game, you would become a veteran fan of it sooner or later, but the progress that I made in F1 2020 was significant enough that all I can do is to praise its gameplay design. F1 2020 is a game that will adapt itself to the level of your driving skills without losing its highly stressful realistic experience. It’s impossible to describe all the amazing features of the game in a few paragraphs, but F1 2020 is my favorite racing title of this year, as I enjoy it more and more by winning every lap of a race over the opponent drivers. Simply, it’s like my Dark Souls in the racing genre.
Minecraft Dungeons
As the one of the first branches of the Minecraft series set in a totally different genre from that of the original game, Minecraft Dungeons is a gameplay-focused entertaining experience that I would be playing for months if there were more chapters to jump in.
Despite its short campaign, Minecraft Dungeons is a highly replayable game where you are encouraged to challenge yourself more and more with higher difficulty levels and better gear for fighting enemies. Dungeons features a very simple combat design that some may find as a negative point, but if it’s enjoyable enough, then why bother ourselves with more complicated stuff?
Stela
Despite being a brief gaming experience, Stela is surely the most beautiful game that I’ve played so far in 2020. The game nails perfection in art and sound design, featuring various gorgeous locations accompanied by strong and impressive song pieces that I couldn’t stop listening to even days after finishing the game.
Of course, Stela has its own downsides in the case of gameplay, but it doesn’t mean you can put it aside easily. If you ask me, Stela is a must-play title for those who are looking for a relaxing puzzle-adventure to take a break from the routine mature video game experiences, at least for a few hours.

Half-Life: Alyx I’m not a huge connoisseur of VR games; I have an Oculus Rift headset but, for the most part, I prefer keeping my gaming to traditional experiences on console and PC. That said, Half-Life: Alyx changed that for me earlier this year and, in a lot of ways, it showed what I’ve been missing out on in VR. More importantly, Alyx feels like not just a tremendous VR game, but a huge step forward for the medium as a whole and an incredible example of immersive storytelling in a VR experience.
As a long-time fan of the Half-Life series, seeing the familiar sights of City 17 once again was a thrill in and of itself. However, the experience of witnessing it all again in Half-Life: Alyx was only enhanced by playing in VR, as Combine structures loomed in the distance and Striders towered over with their shambling legs. Everything I love about the Half-Life series is distilled perfectly into Alyx and fueled by its technical innovations in VR. Though I know a lot people most likely haven’t played it due to not owning a VR headset, trust me; when you do, this is the game that is worth having it for.
The Last of Us Part II
Even well after finishing The Last of Us Part II last month, it’s still a game that I haven’t been able to get out of my head after playing it. As much as I went into Part II unsure of whether Naughty Dog would be able to deliver an experience that could hold up to the original The Last of Us, by the end of Part II I had no doubt that the studio managed to pull it off and then some.
Though some might consider The Last of Us Part II the most “controversial” game of 2020 so far as a result of internet discourse around the game’s story and ending, to me, the game’s strengths lie in its willingness to take risks and ask questions with no easy answers. The moral complexities at the heart of Ellie and Abby’s stories in The Last of Us Part II are ones that I myself haven’t fully come to terms with yet even after finishing the game, and speak to its engrossing and unrelenting story. Though The Last of Us Part II was messaged as a game about “hate,” by the story’s end, you’ll see that it compasses much more than that, and is easily one of the most memorable (if gut-wrenching) experiences that I’ve had so far this year.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
While normally I wouldn’t usually consider a remastered version of a game on my year-end lists, I have to give a bit of the spotlight this time around to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. Having missed out on the game when it first released on the Wii U and in the past several years becoming infatuated with the Persona series, those two events led to the perfect confluence of finally getting to play Tokyo Mirage Sessions this year and loving it.
Taking the elements of the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series and mixing them together, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore by today’s standards isn’t a JRPG of the caliber of Persona 5, but is still an incredibly fun and refreshing experience in its own right. With its J-pop infused theme and music, an eclectic and memorable cast of characters, and an engaging combat system, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is an excellent way to experience an underrated JRPG, regardless of whether you’re an SMT/Fire Emblem fan or otherwise.

DOOM Eternal
DOOM Eternal rules. In my own estimation, Eternal is a drastic improvement in nearly every way over the original game. The combat is more visceral, the soundtrack is heavier, and traversal around each environment is more enticing. It’s not just what I believe to be the best game of the year, it’s very well the best shooter released in this entire console generation. Play it.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
I did not expect to like Ori and the Will of the Wisps like I did. Blind Forest never clicked with me when I played it a few years back like it did for many others, so my expectations for Will of the Wisps were pretty reserved. The final game ended up being far more engrossing, especially from a storytelling standpoint, than I thought it would be.Will of the Wisps is likely the best Metroidvania game I have played in the past few years and is deserving of endless attention. Make sure you give it a shot if you have an Xbox or PC.
Persona 5 Royal
I never got around to playing the original Persona 5. It has basically been my white whale for years and was a game that I knew I’d love if I just fully committed to actually playing it from front to back. When I found that Persona 5 was finally set to be re-released in its new Royal iteration, I knew this had to be the point where I rectified my mistake from the first time around. Fortunately, that turned out to be the best gaming-related decision that I have made so far in 2020.
Persona 5 Royal, despite having not yet finished it, has already become one of my favorite games of all-time. In a year that has been rife with stress, anxiety, and a multitude of other hardships for me personally, Persona 5 Royal has been a consistent joy to ease into regularly at the end of some very long days. I can’t wait to (hopefully) finish it up in the next few weeks.

Dreams
Dreams is a tough one to put a label on. I remember when Media Molecule first announced the ambitious project, I was immediately intrigued but couldn’t fully wrap my mind around exactly what it was trying to achieve. It’s a constantly evolving set of tools that is somewhat overwhelming at first, but Media Molecule takes you by the hand and guides you through the scary stuff. If creation isn’t your thing, Dreams gives you instant access to every type of game or multimedia experience you could ever imagine created by other dreamers. You become part of the “Dreamiverse,” which is the built-in community and social network where you can meet other dreamers or check out their works. So far that includes everything from all original games to re-creations of things like the PT demo or the opening section of Metal Gear Solid. Admittedly, I’ve still not created anything I’m proud enough to publish for the Dreamiverse to see, but I’ve had tons of fun trying it out. My favorite thing is tinkering with the music tools.
Dreams includes a campaign known as “Art’s Dream,” which acts as an advanced tutorial to show what the game can do. It was created entirely within the game and using the same tools that are available to anyone with a PS4 and a copy of Dreams. It’s a bit on the short side, clocking in around two hours, but not a minute is wasted. It features a cast of likable characters and incorporates many genres including platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and even throws in a few unforgettable musical numbers for good measure. I’d love to see more of “Art’s Dream,” perhaps even a new adventure starring Frances and Foxy. If you don’t finish “Art’s Dream” with a smile on your face, you are either a monster or you’re dead inside.
Ghost of Tsushima
These three games not only represent my best of 2020 so far; in many ways they also represent the best of an era as we prepare to say goodbye to the console generation that gave birth to the PS4 and the Xbox One. While initially one of my three picks went to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ghost of Tsushima came in at the last minute and knocked it out of the list. The game is an absolute joy to play. It features stunning visuals and environments, spicy combat, and an engaging story complete with well-written characters. It’s a massive open-world game that I’m still happily exploring without feeling that fatigue I get from so many other open-world games. This has a lot to do with the side missions not feeling like they were an afterthought; some are just as enjoyable as the main missions.
Throughout the game you play as Jin, who is one of the last samurai during the first Mongol invasions of Japan. However, there are a series of side missions that feature a story arc centering around Jin’s allies and friends. I found this to be a cool feature that lets you get to know the supporting characters better, and could even set up the possibility of spin-offs or sequels. Aside from being an expert with the katana, Jin is equipped with a small arsenal of other weapons and equipment that noticeably gets more deadly as you progress to the top of the skill tree. There are a few quirks with button responsiveness and erratic movement at times, but honestly, there’s so much to love about Ghost of Tsushima that after a while, you won’t even notice.
The Last of Us Part II
Naughty Dog made a few bold choices with the direction that The Last of Us Part II took. Not everyone was happy with the outcome, but for me it not only lived up to my high expectations, it at times surpassed them. It’s brutal and violent in a way that often makes you uncomfortable, and yet, it didn’t feel gratuitous. I’m sure playing it amidst a real-life pandemic heightened my experience and made it even more poignant. While playing my emotions ran the gamut of everything I’ve ever felt. Just like in the first game, it’s hard to tell who (or if anyone) is the protagonist. You can love or hate a character in this game for exactly the same reasons. I have to say, without blatant spoilers, the way that Naughty Dog dropped you in new character Abby’s playable shoes without a formal introduction was shocking and brilliant.
The gameplay of The Last of Us Part II is much improved over the first game, but it still retains many of the same core mechanics. As far as graphics go, it’s Naughty Dog, so of course the game looks amazing. We are introduced to a few new variations of the infected, some improved and new weapons, and an entirely new playground which largely takes place in Seattle. The voice acting is top-notch with Ashley Johnson once again reprising the role of Ellie. The campaign is lengthy and depending upon how you play and if you are a treasure seeker, it can take up to 40 hours to complete. Despite having many “giraffe” moments, The Last of Us Part II isn’t the “feel-good” game of the year. It shows us a harsh reality and some of the subjects explored are not for the squeamish, which was obviously going to divide the audience. Weeks after finishing The Last of Us Part II, it still haunts me. Despite its critics, The Last of Us Part II will be remembered as one of the greatest games ever made, and I think it deserves every bit of that praise.

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Part of me is still in awe that this even exists (the part of me that watched that PS3 tech demo on loop all those years ago), and another part is trying to comprehend something I never could’ve expected upon completing the game: Final Fantasy VII is brand new again.
Let’s face it: the ending of this game and the new story elements it introduced along the way are pretty divisive, and scary for some even (hell, even the characters themselves were uneasy stepping into a quite literal unknown). The development team behind this game, composed of veterans from the original and new blood that grew up playing it, knew exactly what they were making here and how important FFVII is to so many people. And it’s obvious how far they went to be faithful not just to the original game, but everything about its world and characters that came after.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is only the first part of the story, but is such a grand celebration of everything the original game has become over the past 23 years. And then it sets itself up for the story to play out differently. It’s gutsy for sure, and to me, incredible. For the next part of Remake–be it “Part 2,” “Reunion,” or whatever Square wants to call it–I legitimately don’t know what’s going to happen, and that’s all really exciting to me.
Kingdom Hearts III: ReMIND
Kingdom Hearts III was hit or miss with fans, and the ReMIND DLC fell into pretty much the same boat. For me, they were both hits. The last third of Kingdom Hearts III is still one constant exposition dump, and ReMIND didn’t reinvent that. Instead, it just added to it with more story content, some extra, more challenging boss fights, and finally giving Kairi something to do. Combine that with the merciless boss battles, the Final Fantasy fan service that was noticeably missing from the core game, and that massive cliffhanger of a secret ending that came with the “Limit Cut” episode, and ReMIND is pretty much a small encapsulation of why I enjoy the series at the end of the day. It’s an ultimately nonsensical story that’s presented so sincerely that I can’t help but love it, with gameplay that can make me question my sanity but feel so incredibly satisfying and smooth when it all finally clicks, and has an ending teaser that’ll keep me theorizing for however long it takes to get the next game.
Plus, ReMIND reaffirms that Donald Duck is the most powerful being in existence.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered
By and large, this is more of a current-gen port than a straight up remaster (granted, that term has a pretty wide definition), but that’s perfectly fine. The Wonderful 101 was a commercial bomb when it released as a Wii U exclusive seven years ago, but it was also one of the most unique and highly creative action games I’ve ever played. So just having a modern, widely accessible version of the game, I think, is a huge win both for returning fans and players who’ve heard about it but never had the means to play it for themselves.
You don’t play as one character in The Wonderful 101, you play as an entire team of Super Sentai/Power Rangers-inspired heroes all at once, all colorful both aesthetically and in their personality. You draw basic shapes to summon weapons and fight alien invaders, being able to start out with a giant fist, then switching on the fly to a sword, a whip, or a gun to keep combos going. You play through a simple but earnestly put together story, one with plenty of wit and humor, that consistently escalates towards massive scale boss battles with some of the greatest quick-time events I’ve ever seen. However, then it will throw you into a gameplay section that’s just one big tribute to another game entirely, because why not?
The Wonderful 101: Remastered is excellent, but won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. That said, the game’s first mission captures everything it’s about, so if you’re curious but still on the fence, go check it out. It should be more than enough for you to make a decision.

Dungeons & Dragons
So, the world is in a pretty crappy spot right now. I miss being able to have board game and Magic nights with my friends, but one game I’ve been able to continue to enjoy is Dungeons & Dragons. And boy-o-boy has the bug bitten me bad during this quarantine. My normal Tuesday night crew made the transition to Roll20 to continue our adventures, and this social interaction grew to become one of the highlights of my week. We still play mostly online, but we’ve been able to recently play our first in-person game recently and it was a magical celebration.
I love rolling dice, I love coming up with solutions to problems, and I love when things inextricably go off the walls and things go to hell in this game. In my hunger for more dice-rolling goodness, I finally started Critical Role (started at the very beginning, “Vox Machina” episode 1, baby!), and it has only ignited an even larger desire to play. I have even started an additional bi-weekly game with another group of friends and I’m doing some Gen Con stuff too, just to try and take the roleplaying itch off.
Thank you Dungeons & Dragons for helping keep me sane during these crazy times. As sane as I can be, anyway.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Much like many people, I waited so very long for this game to finally release and the fact that it turned out so much better than we all expected was such an amazing surprise. Final Fantasy VII Remake finally nailed what Square has been attempting to create in a game since they released Advent Children, with flashy and stylish combat that retains much of the depth and strategy of a turn-based RPG. The gameplay, characters, and much of the story all snapped perfectly into place for me, and I fell in love with this world all over again. I’m hopeful that with much of the battle system figured out and a lot of the ground work now being laid, the time until the next entry of Final Fantasy VII Remake won’t be too long. Until then, I will eagerly daydream and speculate as to what many of the endgame moments mean, and hope that they add FFXII‘s Gambit system into the next game.
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 is one of the best RPGs of all time; fight me. I fell in love with the original release back in 2017, and while excited for Royal, I was curious how I would take to replaying such a long game again. 130 hours later, I came away loving the characters, story, and gameplay even more than I did the first time. From the gratuitous amount of style that oozes from every facet of this game, to the jazz-rock soundtrack that I never want to get out of my head, I can’t help but smile when I think about Persona 5 Royal.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Speaking of a game releasing at the right time, Animal Crossing: New Horizons absolutely hit the sweet spot. I’ve been an Animal Crossing fan since the GameCube, so my excitement was palpable for the new release, but Nintendo did what Nintendo does best and knocked it out of the park, exceeding my already high expectations.
My girlfriend is far from a gamer. The extent of her gaming history is building houses in The Sims and playing Wii Sports or Mario Kart 8, but as we entered lockdown in the UK earlier this year, I decided to pick her up a Switch Lite and a copy of Animal Crossing, and it’s been a revelation. Since the game came out in March we’ve played together almost every day, sharing design ideas, planning out our towns, trading items and just hanging out. We’ve spent hundreds of happy hours playing this game together and it’s absolutely deserving of its spot in my top three games of this year so far.
The Last of Us Part II
While I managed to hold off from replaying Persona 5, I think I’m going to struggle to do the same with The Last of Us Part II. The gripping drama, fantastic world-building and interweaving story are calling me back. It’s a call that is getting harder to resist the more time that passes.
Although “the internet” might disagree, I felt The Last of Us Part II told a fantastic story in a really engaging way. I felt a huge range of emotions at every twist and turn, and at the end of the game I was left feeling hollow. Not hollow in a negative way, but in the way when you complete an awesome TV series and wonder what life was like before it. The Last of Us Part II is nothing short of incredible, and I implore the doubters to give it a shot.
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 was the first game in the Persona series that I’d checked out, and after completing it back in 2018, I was itching to play it again. During my time of hesitation Persona 5 Royal was promptly announced and I decided to wait it out, and boy am I glad I did.
The original game, to me at least, is an absolute masterpiece. The music is incredible, the art direction is stunning, and its gameplay loop is so addictive. While my expectations for Persona 5 Royal were high, the first game was so good that I wasn’t expecting anything groundbreaking. I was wrong. Atlus tightened up a lot of the smaller gameplay niggles from the original game, added a pair of fascinating new characters, and incorporated the pinnacle of all Palaces. Although I clocked in at close to 120 hours, it released at a perfect time where social interaction has been forced to a minimum. Persona 5 Royal allowed me to create meaningful bonds and make up for lost time all while playing through the game’s intricate story.

Now, it’s time for Flipboard’s charm offensive with publishers. This week, the mobile reading app rolled out full-page print ads in newspapers, including the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, and sites, including Axios, Vanity Fair and The Hollywood Reporter, just as publishers are increasingly seeking ways to replace their Facebook referral traffic.
Mike McCue, Flipboard’s founder and CEO, said discussions of a campaign began late last spring and that the timing of the launch is unrelated to Facebook’s announced plans to cut the amount of news people see in its news feed. Still, the campaign comes after a year when Flipboard worked with publishers on reporter-curated newsletters, grew its editorial and curation team and laid the groundwork to help publishers monetize their video inside Flipboard. It added more than 100 non-U.S. publishers to its roster of 4,000.
It’s also backing away from a fast-loading mobile article format, similar to Facebook Instant Articles, which it debuted before mobile-optimized sites were common. In response to publisher feedback, it’s no longer stressing the format, instead allowing publishers to use Flipboard as a source of referral traffic, provided their sites are mobile-optimized.
The effect has been dramatic in some cases. The Next Web was publishing all its content on Flipboard using its proprietary format and started using it for referral traffic in November. After the switch, Flipboard immediately leapfrogged Facebook, where The Next Web has over 1 million fans, and Twitter (1.85 million followers) to become its top source of referral traffic, despite the fact that The Next Web has just over 181,000 followers on Flipboard.
Mobile referral traffic from Flipboard is up over 350 percent since May, according to Parsely, albeit from a small base compared to Google and Facebook. Google and Facebook still dominate mobile referral traffic by a big margin, and Flipboard is a distant fourth after Twitter, according to Parsely.
“It’s become a sleeper hit,” said Jess Barron, vp and gm of Livestrong.com, which joined Flipboard six months ago. “Every publisher is looking for the next big thing to provide us that regular infusion of traffic.”
Flipboard is not in the same weight class as Facebook or Google. It claims a monthly active user base of 100 million, less than 5 percent of Facebook’s 2.1 billion. And its audience doesn’t skew heavily toward a particular age group — its audience is equal parts millennial, Gen X and older.
A still from Flipboard’s digital brand campaign, which launched this week.
But unlike Facebook, which is trying to become a native video platform and a commerce marketplace and a global ad platform (as well as a place for friends and family), Flipboard’s raison d’être is simple and publisher-friendly: Deliver brand-safe publisher content to its users.
Publishers just need a functioning RSS feed of their content to be distributed on Flipboard. But this past year, Flipboard began collaborating more closely with publishers on content packages that appeared both on Flipboard and in newsletters. NBC News, for example, created a package around the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency; The Wall Street Journal created a package on the state of women in the workplace.
Those efforts continue in 2018. For the Golden Globes, for example, E! curated coverage of the event that Flipboard put on its homepage.
Publishers, which have often complained that other platforms from Facebook to Pinterest haven’t been helpful solving their problems, will take any platform love they get these days.
“They’re incredibly responsive,” said Janaki Challa, who heads audience development at The Daily Beast, which gets more traffic from Flipboard than Facebook. (She wouldn’t give numbers.) “It can be hit or miss with other partners, but with them, it’s been a relatively easy relationship.”
