As part of fan fiction writer appreciation day, I am taking a leaf out of @cassiopeiasara ‘s book and I have made a post of some of my favorite fics. To narrow things down a bit I’ve gone with either smaller fandoms, less-common pairings, or genfic that I particularly liked.
There are no Worst Witch recs here I’m afraid - the process of trying to whittle down the list to a small list was too daunting for trying to get this post finished for today.
Recs beneath the cut.
With the exception of the rec for The Remains of the Day (which I explain in more detail below) all of these recs are in the K-T range, going by the AO3 rating system.
Doctor Who – Genfic
Horton, the Elephant Who Waited by wshaffer; 11th Doctor
wshaffer wrote a 1200 word fic completely in Dr. Seuss-style rhyme about Horton meeting the 11th Doctor and it’s utterly delightful.
Bus to Strathclyde by The_Plaid_Slytherin; 9th Doctor
A ficlet about Nine meeting six-year-old Donna that time that she took the bus to Strathclyde. Short, sweet, and entertaining.
Murder She Wrote – half gen, half unrequited Michael Hagarty/Jessica Fletcher because let’s be honest he’s been in love with her since the moment he saw her in season 2
Tidings of Comfort and Joy by Lucy Gillam
Years after the end of the show, Michael Haggarty shows up in Jessica’s life again. Supposedly by chance. Supposedly doesn’t want anything in particular. Jessica thinks he’s lying. (She’s right).
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Rosemary Boxer
Just Two Florists at a Wedding by Wine Through Water
This is established relationship and Laura’s daughter finding out about Laura and Rosemary being together. It’s sweet and funny and includes Laura’s daughter demanding to know what Rosemary’s intentions are.
Of All The Trees That Are In The Wood by Cerberusia.
Rosemary invites Laura to spend Christmas with her. Rosemary has some awesome lesbian friends (extremely well-written and charming OCs) who end up helping Laura see that she really is in love with Rosemary. Slow burn, because Laura is so clueless.
Planting Seeds by phantom listener
This is a lovely bit of pre-ship Laura/Rosemary in which they manage to get into even more trouble without a murder case than with one. It’s charming, cozy, quite funny and in the best spirit of the show.
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Richard Oakley
Dandelions and Pimpernels  by by_no_one_more_than_me (Lady_Cleo)
Laura/Rosemary is my OTP for this show with one exception, and this fic is it. In the episode The Invisible Worm there is a professor at a school who falls head over heels for Laura and without spoilers there is something that happens between the two of them at the end of the episode that I always wished someone would write a follow-up fic about, and then Lady_Cleo did, and did a magnificent job at it.
Sense and Sensibility – Elinor Dashwood/Colonel Brandon
Christopher and Elinor by Mercy
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
This is an epistolary re-write of the entirety of Sense and Sensibility, in which Elinor and Colonel Brandon end up together. It’s one of my favorite Elinor/Brandon fics, because I love epistolary stories, because it tweaks the other characters in ways that don’t feel like a huge departure from the novel, and because it takes place over such a long period of time there’s plenty of time to develop the Elinor/Brandon relationship.
Thor Ragnorak: Bruce Banner & Valkyrie brotp
I brought a knife to a gunfight by paperclipbitch
Set between the end of the movie and the first post-credits scene, it’s Bruce and Valkyrie brotp, and I don’t think I can summarize it better than the author, who put it thus:
“I have questions,” Valkyrie says.
“I don’t want to answer them,” Bruce replies.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Iroh/Ursa
Thy Brother’s Wife by AzarDarkstar
I read this on fanfiction.net originally and was delighted to discover while putting this list together that it’s now on the AO3. This is a quiet, but evocative piece in which we glimpse into the life of Ursa, and that of Zuko, through the eyes of Iroh. This is mostly a very lovely unrequited/possibly mutual pining piece – we never see things from Ursa’s perspective. There’s no infidelity, and it’s surprisingly canon-compliant.
The Remains of the Day - Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens
I love this book, and the Merchant-Ivory film version, and as much as I love the way the story originally goes I also desperately ship Miss Kenton and Mr. Stevens.
thisiszircon, who used to be on LiveJournal but is now on Dreamwidth (the name links to the stevens/kenton tag on their dreamwidth) has written the best Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens fanfic I’ve found anywhere and I can recommend all of their stories. Thisiszircon really understands the characters and does slow burn like nobody’s business. And a bunch of the fics are really quite long, which is a delight.
A number of the fics are in first person but I don’t actually find this to be a problem because a) they’re very well done, and b) the book itself is of course in first person. Some of these stories are R/M rated but all the ones I have read have taken a long time to get to R/M, are quite obvious about when they’re going to head into that territory, and you can either stop there if you want or scroll quite a bit past and then just carefully scroll your way back up until you’re at a point that makes sense, if like me you avoid sex scenes.
Common Ground (Part one can be found here) is one of my favorites - it takes the book scene (from the movie), alters it a little to open up the possibility for more dialogue, and settles you in for a long, slow burn. Common Ground is rated R but it takes quite a long time before it gets to R territory, if I recall correctly.

rosemary/laura. villa in spain.
it’s traditional to post a rosemary & thyme fic for @bigblackdogfic on her birthday, which is today. bbd, happy birthday, my love!
--
“What would you do if you owned a villa in Spain?” Laura asks Rosemary. They’re sitting on a bench in the Parque de Málaga, shaded by giant palm trees. The park isn’t far from the Alcazaba, where they’d met up with Neil only days before, but they hadn’t had a chance to walk through it then, and Rosemary had wanted to see the Mediterranean garden’s wealth of trees, shrubs, and flowers before they catch their overnight flight back home.
“What would I do?” Rosemary raises an eyebrow.
Laura isn’t sure whether Rosemary picked up on her use of you in the question: this thing between them is so new that to say we, to conjure them together in some giant master bedroom in an imaginary mansion, feels too presumptuous.
“Yes,” says Laura. “What would you do?”
“Drink a lot of sangria and take naps.”
She would, too. Laura suppresses a smile. “Yes, yes, but—would you be like Neil and his Moorish obsession, and write books and bore everyone to tears yammering on about your Spanish garden? Would you open it to the public, give them tours of the grounds? Host fabulous dinner parties for the neighbors?”
Rosemary frowns. “Oh, I don’t know. Don’t much see myself as a hostess.”
“You could manage it,” Laura says. “With the right set of people.”
“Grubby and gossipy, you mean?”
Laura smiles. “Oh, I don’t know. You do seem to attract a rather rarified type, considering you practically sleep with a fanny pack on.”
Rosemary snorts. “Rarified? No, I don’t think so.”
Laura ticks them off. “Neil. Wealthy, owns a villa in Spain. Emma. Wealthy, owns a villa in Italy. Dorothy, owns a villa in France, or used to anyway, don’t know what happens to it when you go to prison. Angus Fairley, who regularly consumed champagne breakfasts at fancy hotels, rest his soul—”
“He was a food critic,” Rosemary objects. “It was his job.”
“He was posh,” Laura says. “Definitively posh. And that horrible man, what was his name, Hugo Dainty—”
“Well it turned out he didn’t have money after all, did he?”
Laura wags her finger. “You liked him when you thought he did.”
“Hmph,” says Rosemary.
“All I’m saying,” Laura continues, “is that you’d be right at home with a little party of upper-crust expats, if you owned a villa in Spain.”
Rosemary watches a bright bird fly past, squawking loudly as it lands in a tree. Laura can’t quite read her expression.
“Two of those people turned out to be murderers,” Rosemary says eventually.
“What?” Laura blinks. “Oh. Yes, well.”
“And Neil is married to a murderer.”
“Yes.” Laura pauses. “And all of them could be accurately described as ‘a real piece of work.’”
Rosemary is smiling a little now. “Hardly the best group of dinner guests. Between the insults and the lack of tact…”
“Not to mention the murderous tendencies.”
Rosemary laughs. But after a moment, her smile fades. “Goodness,” she says. “I have rather a terrible sense of judgment when it comes to people, don’t I?”
Laura shrugs. “Oh, I don’t know.” She watches a couple walk past, hand in hand. “At least you’ve got good judgment when it comes to plants. Good for business.”
Rosemary says, “Well. I’ve got good judgment about one person, anyway. At least, I assume.” She smiles at Laura. “You’re not secretly evil, are you?”
Laura laughs. “Not that I know of. Just grubby and gossipy.”
“Good.” They sit in companionable silence for a moment, breathing in the fresh air and soaking up the sun. Laura meant to pay attention to the plants while they were here, catalog them in her head for later, but she can’t be bothered right now.
“I wouldn’t murder you,” Rosemary says.
Laura’s eyebrows shoot up. “What?”
“If we owned a Spanish villa. No murders. Especially not you.”
“Ah.” Laura nods wisely. “Good to know.”
But her heart is swelling. If we owned a Spanish villa. They don’t, of course, and never will—but right now, Laura thinks, that doesn’t much matter. She takes Rosemary’s hand, and they sit for a little longer in the sunshine.

If you are still taking prompts how about this one? :D
100. “You’re the only one I wanna wake up next to.” For Rosemary and Thyme
Thanks!
I made a slight change to the line to make it fit better, hope you don't mind!
---
“What did Professor Hartwell want?” Laura asked as she climbed into the Land Rover.
“He asked me to marry him.”
Laura froze, the door half-closed. “Well,” she managed. “His would be a nice face to wake up to, I suppose.”
“Laura,” Rosemary said with fond exasperation, “yours is the only one I want to wake up next to.”
“Mine?”
“Yes,” she leaned over and kissed Laura’s cheek.
“If you’re going to kiss me,” Laura swung the door shut, “you’d better do it properly.”

for the minific prompts - P and Rosemary & Laura?
Prompt: While driving or in/and around a car.
Edit: now posted to AO3 if you’d prefer to read it there: As Right as Rain
“I cannot believe that you told her we were getting married!” Laura exclaimed as they drove away.
“It was the first thing I could think of that wasn’t, oh, we’re poking around in the back here because we think you’re the murderer and you’ve hidden the evidence in your bridal shop!” Rosemary shot back. “Besides, at least I didn’t imply that you were a—a home-wrecker,” she spluttered.
“I did no such thing!”
“You told her that we were keeping it quiet because your divorce hadn’t gone through.”
“Because she asked me if we were getting married why I looked so shocked! I was trying to salvage your cover story, which you hadn’t bothered to give me warning of, by the way.”
“Well I didn’t really have time to run it by you first, did I? Next time you can explain to the murderer why we’re sneaking about.”
“I will.”
“Great.”
“Besides,” Laura added with a snort, “if any of them are going to involved kissing again we’d better have a practice because that was terrible.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry that that exact situation wasn’t one of the ways that I’d ever imagined kissing you,” Rosemary retorted.
Laura gaped at her, and in the ensuing silence the clanking of vehicle seemed louder than ever.
“Errm, forget I said anything,” Rosemary said, her eyes firmly fixed on the road.
“You—“
“We’re nearly back, I think. Do you mind if I shower first?”
“Pull the car over.”
“What?”
“We cannot possibly have this conversation while you’re driving.”
“About who’s going to shower first? I don’t see why not. It’s not a difficult decision.”
“Rosemary. Please.”
Rosemary glanced over briefly and sighed. “There’s a patch up ahead where I can pull over,” she nodded her head.
She eased the car onto the dirt and turned off the ignition. “Are you sure you want to talk about this?”
“Yes, I think it’s fairly important information that my best friend, business partner, and person with whom I live has thought about kissing me in multiple situations.”
“I didn’t mean for you to find out.”
“Why not?”
“Why not? Well first of all, you’re still technically married, and while you don’t seem to like Nick very much you still talk about him a lot. Secondly everywhere we go men are falling over themselves to fix their interest with you, interest that at least some of the times you seemed to find flattering. Thirdly, as you said we spend a great deal of time together and are pretty close I’ve never once gotten the smallest sense that you had any interest in me that way.”
“I didn’t realize…”
“Clearly not,” Rosemary huffed, her cheeks pink.
“You’re right that the divorce does make things complicated,” Laura said slowly. “And you’re right that it has been flattering at times, knowing that there were people who found me attractive. I haven’t pursued those options for a variety of reasons, including the fact that however much I am angry at Nick for the way he’s treated me, however angry I am that he cheated on me with that, that woman, I’m probably not ready for any new romantic relationship right now.”
Rosemary bit her lip and nodded. “So can we please forget this happened and just keep going?”
“I’m not ready,” Laura repeated, “and I don’t want to - I can’t promise anything, not now. And I didn’t know you felt like this, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t noticed you, because I certainly have.” She smiled in that mischievous way that always made Rosemary’s heart flip. “Besides being warm and kind and funny, you’re a bit of a looker, if you hadn’t noticed.”
Rosemary bumped her shoulder against Laura’s gently. “Oh stop it.”
“It’s true. I’ll even let you have the first shower on account of it.”
Rosemary chuckled. “Thank you, how gracious of you.”
“You are most welcome,” Laura replied in an equally exaggerated fashion.
“Are we all right then?” Rosemary asked, with a hint of anxiety creeping into her tone.
“As right as rain,” Laura replied, still smiling.

What are some of your favourite otps and why?
I like this question a lot and could go on all day (and definitely got a bit carried away) about favorite otps and why I like them.
So to spare your dashes, I’m going to list the otps that I talk about in the post, and then put the why below the cut.
Ada Cackle/Hecate Hardbroom, The Worst Witch
Gwen Bat/Algernon Rowan-Web, The Worst Witch
Laura Thyme/Rosemary Boxer, Rosemary and Thyme
Polly Churchill/Sir Godfrey, Blackout/All Clear by Connie Willis
Clarisse/Joe, The Princess Diaries movies
Ada Cackle/Hecate Hardbroom
This is one of my favorite ships because they are so gentle and loving with each other. They have very different approaches to the world, but they complement each other and they have a deep and abiding connection and they respect each other’s different way of doing things, even if they don’t always agree with each other.
I also read this a very slow burn relationship, where they start out as colleagues and become friends and then become better friends and the relationship just keeps getting deeper and somewhere in there they fall in love with each other and pine after each other for quite a long time. I love the idea of them working together for so long and becoming closer and they’re just so clearly so important to each other. I see them as having an “it came on so gradually I scare know where and when it began” sort of thing, to sort of quote Pride and Prejudice. I also really love them as individual characters – I love exploring their motivations, and I find Hecate in particular easier to tap into as a character for writing fanfic than many characters.
Gwen Bat/Algernon Rowan-Webb
One of my favorite things about this OTP is how like a fairytale it is, but instead of the primary actors in the story being quite young, they’re grandparent-age. I also adore how in love with each other they are. They are absolutely devoted to one another, despite the fact that Algernon was gone for thirty years and Gwen didn’t know where he was and he nearly forgot her. They’re just the sweetest, and no, they don’t always get along but of course they don’t because they’re fully fleshed-out characters and not fairy tale characters but at the end of the day they still love each other so much.
Laura Thyme/Rosemary Boxer
Rosemary and Laura have an absolutely great meeting story, and they’re another OTP that complement each other really well. They have different skill sets that play off each other and fill in the gaps, and they each have things that are less good (Rosemary has an impulsiveness that could have gotten her killed several times over if she didn’t have Laura, for example; and one of the things Rosemary helps Laura with is making sure she doesn’t wallow too long in feelings about her failed marriage) that they are able to help each other with.
I like that they’re both independent, intelligent people, who while having great affection for one another are also perfectly happy spending time going off and each doing her own thing for a while.
Polly Churchill/Sir Godfrey
THIS SHIP, OH THIS DOOMED SHIP. This is one of my favorites because it is so exquisitely doomed, and you know it and they know it, and yet and yet and yet you can see what it might have been, had they met at the right time. They absolutely meet at the right time for the story, it’s just unfortunately, not the right time for them. She’s a time traveler so she’s literally out of her regular time, and there’s quite an age gap, and it ends up being…flirtation isn’t really quite the right word because it’s more serious than “flirtation” implies but it’s more of a meeting of the minds, an emotional relationship of sorts, and an acknowledgement that if they had met when he was a lot younger things might have been very different indeed.
It’s a ship that’s always “what might have been” and it’s also so close and just *nnnggggh incoherent noises*. It’s right there, just out of reach and you know that it never really has a chance but you just want it so bad and they’re so lovely with each other.
Clarisse/Joe
One of the things that I adore about this ship is that it is a later-in-life love story and a slow burn/pining love story. The chemistry between the actors is also just superb – the dancing scene in PD1 “You’re been wearing black too long” still makes my heart flutter. The way you’re suddenly aware of how alone they are and vividly aware of the space between them, and the tension and I don’t know how they did it exactly but it’s this incredibly charged scene and almost immediately, without having had really any suggestion whatsoever prior in the movie, you suddenly realize “oh, there’s a whole world of a relationship here that I didn’t realize existed and now how could I see anything else.” And that one line that Joe says is the only dialogue in the entire scene. It’s a masterful performance from both of them.
I adore how it is implied that they have had these feelings for each other for quite a long time (possibly even predating the King’s death) and they haven’t acted on them but they know. THEY KNOW. They’ve been doing their best to ignore the feelings, or at least Clarisse has, but THEY KNOW. I love that for her it’s a falling-in-love story – we know that she was not in love with her husband but was fond of him and grew to love him perhaps, although she was never in love with him. And Joe’s been waiting patiently as her bodyguard/confidant/friend for the time to come when they are free to love each other. They’re both very honorable about the whole thing, which is another thing that I love. Even though they have these feelings for each other, they’re able to not act on them, they’re able to remain friend and work together and still have a good relationship even though they can’t be together romantically. They understand why not, and they accept that.
I also love that as things progress once they do start being a little more open with each other about their feelings, Clarisse thinks it’s still a secret but basically the entire country of Genovia knows, has been tastefully not saying anything but secretly cheering for them to have their happy ending. I love how supportive everyone is of this relationship – they just want their Queen/former Queen and Joe to be happy.
And I love that they’re the ones who ultimately do get to have the fairytale ending.

For @hovercraft79, one more for 27. Things you said through a closed door. Rosemary and Laura, this time.
Laura yanked on the handle of the jeep.
“It’s not opening!”
“It’s unlocked,” Rosemary yelled through the door, fumbling with the ignition. “Come on old, start up.”
“Rosemary!”
Rosemary leaned across the seat and with a twist and a shove, popped the door open. Laura launched herself into the car. “Go, go, go!”
“I’m trying!” She slapped the dashboard, and the jeep sputtered to life. “Atta girl!”
They tore down the road. “Dare we turn off of the main road?” Rosemary asked. “There’s no way the old girl is going to be able to outrun him.”
“I wouldn’t count on that,” Laura said with studied nonchalance. “During the fracas I grabbed his keys and threw them into the middle of the pond.”
“I knew there was a reason I liked you.”
“Only one?” Laura teased.
“Well, no, but if you think I’m going to write a poem to you ‘eyes, shining as brightly as the sun upon the waves in a golden dawn’ then you have quite another thing coming.”
“Oh no,” Laura laughed, “I believe it was ‘eyes glowing as the golden dawn upon the waves’.”
“Oh dear, was it?”
“Hang on.” Laura rummaged in her purse and fished out a piece of paper.
“You didn’t keep it?”
“It was only polite to accept it under the circumstances,” Laura chided, putting on her reading glasses. “I was going to recycle it later, but I forgot. Ah, here it is. ‘Your eyes glowing as the golden dawn upon the waves’, indeed. I won’t read you the rest of it, for it only gets worse. Poor man,” she sighed. “I shouldn’t laugh, for he is really quite a nice man.”
“If you wanted a very nice man you should have married that headmaster, I’ve forgotten his name, who was sweet on you.”
“Richard. He was nice, wasn’t he? Do you think we should visit him sometime?”
“Only if we make it perfectly clear that you’re not returning to accept his offer. It wouldn’t be fair to him, otherwise. Unless you are considering it,” she added, an odd note in her voice.
“He was a lovely man, if a bit misguided, but of course I’m not considering it. If I had met him before I had met you perhaps, or in another lifetime. It was a very touching offer, and I shall always treasure the memory of it, but I have no intention of accepting.”
“Good, for I would miss you terribly,” Rosemary said gruffly.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily. Wither thou goest, I will go, and wither thou lodge, I will lodge,” she declaimed.
“I should hope so, for how else are we to pay the rent for next month?” Rosemary retorted, and they both laughed.
“And thy children shall be my children?” Rosemary added almost shyly.
Laura’s breath caught. “Yes, if you like,” she managed.
A brilliant smile blossomed on Rosemary’s face, and without taking her eyes from the road she reached for Laura’s hand. Laura took it and squeezed it. They did not let go of each other until they reached the police station. When they had clambered out of the jeep, Laura’s hand found Rosemary’s once more, and they looked at each other, and they smiled.

Rosemary and Thyme 😁 “Are you sure you’ve not seen them?,” Rosemary huffed, pointing at the table. “I could have sworn I left them right here.”
“Are you sure you’ve not seen them?” Rosemary huffed, pointing at the table. “I could have sworn I left them right here.”
“Yes, I’ve been holding out on you—no of course not, Rosemary, if I knew where your readers were I would tell you!” Laura rolled her eyes.
“Well they didn’t walk off on their own.”
“Maybe they fell under the bed.”
Rosemary knelt gingerly on the floor and lifted the edge of the bed skirt. “I’m getting too old for this,” she muttered, and sneezed.
“Any luck?”
“No,” Rosemary straightened up. “But clearly the garden wasn’t the only thing being neglected. I’m not sure I’d be able to see my readers under there, there’s that much dust.”
“Oof,” she grabbed the bed as she rose to her feet. “Next time you can crawl around on the floor.”
“Come here,” Laura said. “You’ve got a little—“ she gestured to her own hair.
“What?”
“You’re all dusty.”
“Lovely,” Rosemary swiped at her hair.
“I think it’s on your pajamas as well.”
“Blast. Maybe I’ll just get a fresh pair.” She rummaged in her duffel. “I haven’t got a clean pair, have you got some spare?”
“What?” Laura dropped her book and the bookmark slid uselessly onto the counterpane.
“Do you have a pair of pajamas I can borrow?”
“Me?” Laura squeaked.
“Yes, you.”
“I uh, don’t know.”
“Can I have a look?”
“I’ll do it,” Laura replied quickly. “My case is such an awful mess, you’d never find anything in there,” she lied. “Ah, here we are. You’re in luck.”
Laura handed Rosemary a pair of blue pinstripe pajamas.
“Thanks! Do you mind if I change here? The tile in the bathroom was freezing.”
“What? No, of course not,” Laura replied. “Go ahead. I’ll um, read my book some more.”
“I wish I knew where my readers were,” Rosemary said as Laura stared determinedly at her book. “It’s very strange. I know they were on that table earlier today.”
“Hmm,” Laura said. She realized the book was upside down, and quickly righted it.
“I’ll have to see about doing some laundry tomorrow,” Rosemary continued. “Ah, that’s much better. Thank you, Laura.”
Laura risked a glance up. Rosemary was making her way towards her, holding a fistful of pajama-pant-leg in each hand. Laura giggled.
“Oh you,” Rosemary huffed, smiling. “Just because you’re taller than me…” In the process of climbing into the bed, one of the sleeves Rosemary had rolled up tumbled down, and she fell awkwardly half-into Laura.
“Ooof!”
“Ouch!”
“Sorry!”
Rosemary managed to roll off onto her back. She lay there, gasping for a moment, and then started laughing. After a moment, Laura joined in.
“Oh, what a pair we make,” Rosemary chuckled, wiping her streaming eyes.
“I guess it’s a good thing we don’t normally share a bed.”
“Either that or it’s a good thing I don’t normally wear your pajamas.” Rosemary wiggled her legs experimentally. “I guess this will be alright. Well,” she yawned. “Goodnight, Laura.”
“Goodnight, Rosemary.”
Rosemary turned to face the edge of the bed and curled in on herself. Laura lay on her back and let out a noiseless sigh. It was going to be a long night.
