Queen of Cups. Pastoral Tarot

Element: Water Sephirah: Binah (Understanding), sephirah three in Beriah (Creation) Golden Dawn Title: Queen of Cups, Queen of the Thrones of the Waters Elemental Combination: Water of Water Astrological Sign: Cancer Rider Physical Quality: Older woman with light brown hair and gray or blue eyes Rider Deck Theme: Dedication Renaissance Character: Judith Water of water; as one of the four “pure” elemental cards, the Queen of Cups carries a special power. She is much closer to the High Priestess than the impatient King of Wands is to the Magician, for the Queen of Cups is intense and deeply committed to her path, which we might call the creative path of love. Waite says of her that “she sees but she also acts, and her activity feeds her dream.” In the Rider picture, she stares intently at her elaborate cup, which may be her own creation. It stands out in the deck as unique, the only one decorated and the only one covered. Some have compared it to the vessel that holds the “host,” the sacred wafers, or “bread,” that turns into the body of Christ in the Catholic mass. With the winged figures on either side, it recalls the Ark of the Covenant from the temple in ancient Israel, which was guarded by two seraphim. The Ark was the dwelling place of the Shekinah, the female presence of the divine. Notice, by the way, how the Queen from the Visconti holds a similar cup, though without the winged figures. The Rider Queen of Cups has long been one of my favorite cards. Her throne rests on dry land, compared to that of the King, but water swirls all around her and even seems to merge into her dress, so that we can say she blends intense feeling with manifestation. I find the intensity of her gaze symbolic of a strong will, though I know that some Rider devotees find her scowling. In the Shining Tribe deck, the gift of the Gift of Rivers is love. Two streams meet and merge into one, and where they join we see the Holy Grail in the form of a simple bowl. Readings—Intensity, dedication, love, someone who blends feeling with action. She may represent a creative artist or creativity itself. She also can indicate love, both romantic and love of family. Healing and a sense of protection in some difficult situation. Rachel Pollack

Happy whenever this finds you. Today I did not want to learn any more about me. So I asked the cards for a reading for anyone else. Let's see how that goes! If this speaks to you, it is for you. (And like I tell all my clients, if you have questions let me know) Card One: The Mime (Page of Spirals {wands}). I really like to go with what ever my subconscious shouts at me when I draw cards. With this card the first thought I had was "oh... you are lying." That was a strange thing to think until I realized what she is really saying... our mime here is a guide into the spirit realm of memory. She guides you through the past that you lived and helps you bring it into balance with the past of your memories and imagination. See, when we remember things we are actually remembering memories of the thing. So over time those memories shift from what really happened, to an version blurred through our emotions through time. This card seems to be saying that a memory needs to be brought back in line with what really happened. She will help. The second card: The Five of Scrolls (swords), This card is a card of sacrifice. Typically stating that one will have to give up something of importance to move on to the next stage of the quest. In the current context of our draw today, this means that (if this reading is speaking to you) the memories we were just referencing above, will need to be let go of. This will be sacrifice. Because the memories as you have created them and molded them were serving you, either through rage or joy, but they are no longer true and therefore, need to be sacrificed for your higher good. I am not entirely sure I am explaining it well. Letting go of your perception of a previous situation will feel like a great loss. It may be, but is is a very important sacrifice for you to move forward. Card three: The Acrobat (Page of Stones {pentacles}): Looking just at the image is seems pretty clear that should you be able to let go of the perceptions you held then you will soar. Acrobats are well trained to be safe as they throw caution to the winds and fly through the air. The net is there...LET GO! Because this card is all about flexibility of thought. This whole reading we have been talking about our memories of memories that we have warped to better serve us. This form of thinking is no longer the way. As you let go of the previous perceptions of reality, and fly and flip through the air of existence, look around and notice that there are other points of view, other realities that are just as valid. Let's go through this as a full thought. Somewhere in your mind is a memory that you have held tight to. So tightly that now it no longer holds the shape it came in. It is time to release the grip you have on it and the grip it has on you. When you let go of that tight hold you can move freely and joyfully into the future. Really fucked up that, when they’re young, Patrick and Art are SO tactile with each other, so comfortable sharing the same space. Art lets Patrick touch him and move him and physically overwhelm him and easily acquiesces to it, if not outright enjoys it.

Then in the present, they’ve been so far out of each other’s orbit for so long, held such animosity that when they have their moment alone in the sauna, Art physically recoils from Patrick’s close proximity! It’s so painful to watch because even as Patrick’s goading him, it’s so obvious he wants to be able to get back into Art’s space. But Art has erected all these walls around himself, he refuses to give Patrick an inch or even admit to missing how close they used to be!

AND THEN we see Art and Tashi later and he wants her to hold him, to be gentle with him, and just TOUCH him. Like, he does miss that kind of close physical contact! He either doesn’t know how to ask for it or is uncomfortable being that openly vulnerable. Worth noting that he pretty much always defers to Tashi in regard to initiating physical intimacy (with their first kiss, though he does state his desire, SHE has to be the one to make the first move). And it seems pretty obvious that Tashi herself isn’t comfortable providing that intimacy, whereas Patrick actively seeks to provide it (the hug/forehead kiss after their win together in the early years, dragging the stool closer to him).

Art has tried very hard to act like he doesn’t need physical affection and even though his discipline and devotion to Tashi has made him a stronger tennis player, it’s made him a hollow person, which, in turn, has kept him from becoming a GREAT tennis player.

All of this, of course, is why the ending hits so damn hard.

I drew the #pageofchalices from the #starspinnertarot for my #cardoftheday and I am perplexed. In Reverse this is a card of #immaturity and not in the #innerchild #healing sort of way. Which can be either a warning that this will be the energy of the day or a reminder not to succomb to that energy myself. My confusion comes from the imagery reminding me more of losing my #childlike #wonder with the world. And perhaps it is. I like to note in my #tarot #journal just what my thoughts are and what the author of the cards thoughts are. I am thinking that over here in tumblr land I will be adding to my instagram posts... a little bonus if you will for my favorite gremlins. When I draw my daily card for these posts, I am usually not asking a question, I am just looking for the energy of the day and any warnings that I may need. So this actually feels like a warning, to watch out for those childish behaviors, maybe in me. I am exhausted and that is when they slip out. But also from others. We may see some excellent petulance from politicians today, or perhaps a really famous person. Either way, I hope you all have a magical day.
