In a telephone conversation with CNN, Helle von Wildenrath Løvgreen, press secretary to Countess Alexandra, said the countess was “very sad and in shock.
“She can’t believe why and why now, because there’s no good reason. They would lose their titles anyway when they get married one day. Her sons are young men so maybe they might get married in the near future so why shouldn’t it wait until that day so that the titles would disappear on a happy day?”
Von Wildenrath Løvgreen said: “Their father told his children. They were quite shocked.
“He’s really a man of honor. He’s lived all his life in his family with that title and he’s shocked and nearly cried this morning when one of the European tabloids talked to him in Paris.”
She said the children only learned of the change in their titles in recent days, adding: “Back in May he (Prince Joachim) was told that they might remove their titles when they turn 25 and then he didn’t hear any more until a few days ago.”
Von Wildenrath Løvgreen explained that the rebrand is purely a formality, as Joachim’s children do not receive any money from the public purse.
“It’s just their loss of identity and it’s very hard for little children and young men. As Prince Nikolai said to me, ‘what will they write in my passport now?’”
The four children have not spoken with their grandmother since the announcement was made, she said.

I know I am very late in this topic but what was the danish people's ( public) reaction to the titles scandal of princess marie and jocaim and his family
Hi nonnie! Sorry that it took me basically forever to get to this ask.
As I remember it, the Danish public was furious with Margrethe & her approval rating for that year went down to only 69% (not sure if it's a record low, but those are bad numbers for her). Most of the criticism stems from the fact that Joachim's children would have lost their Prince/Princess titles anyway, so why do it like this & not just stick to tradition?
Denmark has a tradition that the Prince & Princess title is reserved, so it's essentially only used by the monarch's children. Previously, when a royal married without the monarch's consent, they lost their Princely titles & succession rights. Instead, they got the hereditary title Count/Countess of Rosenborg. However, with time, this kind of became the norm: everyone except for the main line gives up their Princely title & instead becomes a Count/Countess.
This is also something Joachim, Marie, & Alexandra pointed towards when they spoke out. The Danish public, Joachim, Marie, Alexandra, Nikolai, & probably Felix as well, were under the assumption that at some point in the future, when they (meaning Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, & Athena) get married, they would give up their Princely titles & succession rights & instead "just" have a Count/Countess title.
I don't think there were any talks regarding what Count/Countess titles the children should have; normally, it was the Count of Rosenborg title that was awarded, but considering Margrethe created a completely new one for Alexandra when she divorced Joachim & made up the Monpezat one to make her husband happy... Basically, if I were a Dane, I would have assumed that either a) Nikolai & Felix get the same one as their mother, or b) all of Joachim's children get an individual one, so four new branches get created. Long story short, the Danish title machinery is almost as messy as the British one.
So, to summarise, the Danish public was very much on Joachim, Marie & Alexandra's side because why couldn't it just wait until the kids got married?

20 November 1947 | Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten
At seven o'clock on the morning of the wedding, John Dean (Prince Philip's valet) had tapped on the Duke of Edinburgh's bedroom door at Kensington Palace where he was staying and entered with his tea. ‘He woke at once and was plainly in great form, extremely cheerful and in no way nervous,' Dean recalled.
Back at Buckingham Palace, the princess's maid Margaret 'Bobo' MacDonald had for once not had to wake 'her little lady' as she always called her. The princess was already up and sitting in her dressing gown by the window looking at the crowds. 'I can't believe it's really happening, Crawfie,' she said to Marion Drawford, her old governess, who joined her by the window, 'I have to keep pinching myself.'
By 11.25, Prince Philip and David Milford Haven had taken their places inside the abbey to await the arrival of the bride and the King. Six kings and seven queens were among the 2500-strong congregation, the largest gathering of royalty, regnant and exiled, anyone could remember. As the sound of cheering outside the abbey rose from a rumble to a mighty roar, the rousing hymn, 'Praise My Soul, The King Of Heaven' provided the vocal backdrop to the entrance of the princess and the King. The young bride in her ivory satin Norman Hartnell gown held onto the arm of her father, who was dressed in the uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet.
The princess's father wrote a letter to his daughter, full of love and pride about how he contemplated his life without her: ‘I was so proud of you and thrilled at having you so close to me on our long walk in Westminster Abbey, but when I handed your hand to the Archbishop I felt that I had lost something very precious. You were very calm and composed during the Service and said your words with such conviction that I knew everything was all right.’
