For the Dracula ask! <3
🩸BLOOD What is your favourite Dracula adaptation?
🚢SHIP If you had to go on a long journey with one Dracula character, who would you pick?
It's a tie between Count Dracula 1977 and Nosferatu 1979, though as an adaptation of the book 1977 series are of course superior, while Nosferatu is a better movie. Tbh I'm surprised how little love or interest is in the fandom for the BBC series, which I enjoyed more than the book. It follows text very closely, doesn't "nurf" any character to let others shine (except Seward who got screwed over as always lol), is very tender and intelligent and has this lovely melancholic atmosphere that is so specific for the British TV of those years. As for Nosferatu, I remember watching the 1922 original and thinking "why are there sequels, surely no one could surpass this" and then I got to the 1979 version and holy shit, they did surpass this somehow.
I've never quite understood the hype around Quincey, but he would probably be both the most comfortable to hang out with and travel with, considering his experience.
Thank you for the ask!

Just realised something…. back at the castle, the three Brides want “kisses” and blood from Jonathan, he only half conscious and helpless at their mercy. Meanwhile, the three Suitors will give half conscious Lucy their own blood willingly just to keep her alive and well, only one of them can expect a kiss as a reward.

Christopher Lee played Dracula's role 10 times, did you know in which movie he delivers his careers' best performance? It is Count Dracula directed by Jesús Franco

This is the funniest depiction of Dracula's lizard crawl I've ever seen. If I was in Jonathan's place and saw this outside my window, I'd probably be too confused to feel scared.

2024 Movies (July-December) reviews
5 stars
Hunger Games Cathing Fire (2013): Finally got around to watching this and yeah it holds up! Haven't read the book in a long time but from what I remember it is missing some things but otherwise works as an adaptation. While the Hunger Games itself is well done, the more interesting part is the first half with the behind the scenes politicking and growing sense of a rebellion.
Count Dracula (1977): A pretty close adaptation to the book. It combines two characters into one and makes Lucy and Mina into sisters but I think the spirit of the book remains intact. Some of the effects are charmingly goofy due to the low budget.
Pirates of the Caribbean (2003): A charming adventure film that still holds up, though some elements probably haven't aged well regarding people of color and female characters. Will and Elizabeth make for likable compelling leads and Jack is a chaotic force of nature.
4 stars
Twisters (2024): I find disaster movies either entertaining or cathartic (depending on quality and how seriously they take the subject matter). I was pleasantly surprised here. Satisfying balance of tornado destruction and human emotions (including tornado trauma). There are, sadly, no flying cows. But there is briefly a fire tornado and a flying chicken coop. Only two notable quibbles: there's a sort of love interest that remains subtext (I would have preferred it either be cut out or gone full romance than this unsatisfying middle ground); there was also set up for an alliance between the rival teams that sort of happened.
A Scanner Darkly (2006): About an undercover cop working in his drug-addicted friend group while struggling with the dangerous drug effects he's feeling too. Based on the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name. Done with rotoscoping (live-action with actors, then painted over) which gives it a surreal graphic novel vibe.
Bit (2020): A fun cheesy vampire flick where a trans teen joins up with feminist queer vampires. There are some flaws with it but at least some of that is due to the relatively small budget.
National Treasure (2004): A silly premise that makes for a fun heist/adventure film. 2000s style of fancy edits but they're relatively mild and don't detract much. Ian makes for a solid competent antagonist. Nicholas Cage gives a rather monotone performance that arguably works for the character but doesn't let Cage demonstrate his range. I have to deduct a point for the writing around Abigail feeling dismissive towards her.
National Treasure Book of Secrets (2007): A repeat of the first in a lot of ways and does little to move beyond the formula but is still a good time. Mitch is fine as an antagonist but lacks Ian's charm. The writing around Abigail has improved as well as benefitting from the addition of Helen Mirren.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024): Surprisingly enjoyable with a heartwarming story (Shadow is a fluffy boy who needs so much comfort) even if the juvenile humor and uneven pacing damage it a little.
3 stars
Henry's Crime (2011): A man who was wrongly convicted of robbing a bank gets out of jail and, not knowing what else to do in life, decides to rob that very bank and develops an interest in stage acting along the way. Nothing special but it is amusing.
The WIld Robot (2024): This one felt kinda underwhelming and unfocused. It functions as a decent "parent raising a disabled child" narrative. But the drawing out of the third act took what could have been a good focused narrative about parenthood and escalated it for more spectacle. It's cute and I think kids will enjoy it, as well as having moments of fitting dark humor that I appreciate, but it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. Very pretty though.
2 stars
Red One (2024): It's not a great movie, for either action or Christmas genre, but it has its fun moments. The worldbuilding around Santa and similar mythical beings is interesting and, aside from some shaky cgi, has a few nice visuals. Gryla is an okay villain; I live Kiernan Shipka in most things but it felt like they meant her to have Cate Blanchett's Hela vibes but it didn't quite work for me. Also Krampus shows up in a couple scenes and brings the gleeful energy the rest of the film could have used more of. And for the monsterfuckers out there, this goatman has a bdsm dungeon and deserves some love. ;)
Documentaries:
Crip Camp (2020): About the 1970s camp designed specifically for disabled teens and disability activism in the same decade.
Beautiful Darling (2010): About Candy Darling, a trans woman actress in the 60s who often appeared in Andy Warhol's movies.
Open Secrets (2004): A group of gay veterans discuss their time in the Canadian army and how their sexuality affected it.

New video about the Brides has dropped!
youtube
I think it's the first time I hear about the Transylvania Twist movie. Might be one of the few where they are portrayed as Dracula's family members (I don't remember who the vampiress from The Reluctant Werewolf is to him.) And Jonathan (1970) appears to be an even weirder movie than I thought.

Murray Mysteries, Count Dracula (1977), the 1931 radio play with Orsen Welles, and of course Re: Dracula are all good and fairly faithful adaptations, but yeah just about all the rest of them are crap.
