The transition of her skull plates a few days after getting her shunt. The fluid is draining but her head is also taking a different shape because of how she is lying on her stomach/back/side all day. Luckily, her doctor says that a transformation like this does not cause pain, and will continue to change as the fluid continues to drain.

Azana was also diagnosed with a Cortical Visual Impairment, where she can see, but in spots (like trying to look through swiss cheese). Her right eye is completely blind, and smaller than the left eye. It also has a cyst behind it, and was said to be benign (non-cancerous). Dr. Freedman, her eye doctor, says that it will not grow because it was not attached to the retina, or the brain, in order to continue development. As the eye socket grows, the eye will not, but the left eye will. Later on down the line, as the face continues to grow around her eye, and if the cyst gets bigger, we may need to discuss removal, but not at this time.

The only thing about the left eye, is it will have the limited vision, so we need to start stimulating her eye to strengthen what she can use.

Social Distancing is still necessary, but it doesn’t mean we can’t make it fun!! So instead of hugging our family, we all hung out at a minimum of 6 ft apart at the lake. We had our own space and wore a mask if we needed to get closer. This tiny bit of normalcy is helping and getting Emma out and about is better for all of our mental health. We want to make sure that she is still comfortable with going in the car and doing those normal activities. Her reactions are different every day, but we just have to get out there and keep trying. This was her 3rd time on our new float, but the 1st where she felt ok sitting my herself and with us on it. Emma’s sensory board is finally complete!! Took a lot of research, amazon deliveries, many trips to the dollar tree, and a few hot glue gun burns but it’s finally complete!! Emma is not loving it so far. She has warmed up enough to stand next to it and accidentally moved a few things (she’s mainly mad that it’s taking up her real estate at the table). I know you couldn’t see the boat I was pointing too, but you could hear it so I made sure to position you toward the sound so you could get the full experience of the boat driving past us. It’s little things that we’ve had to relearn ourselves to give you the full experience as any “typical” kid would. We now tell you left or right when putting your backpack on or when we’re making a turn. We announce people when entering. We are learning sign language to help you communicate your needs in way that works for you. This is a life we never imagined, but we’re here and I’m living for it. Every time you touch a new texture or take a step (in your gait trainer) it’s the best feeling in the world. This girl got new glasses!! This is her 4th prescription in a year and hopefully it helps. She’s been having difficulty with keeping her old ones on and at her last appointment the ophthalmologist said it could be due to the prescription being off. Because of the prescription we’ve noticed that her strabismus has been pretty extreme lately and the doc thinks that she is going backwards and trying to turn her vision off again in her left eye. ⁣ Hopefully this new set of specs help her get those eyes back on track and she keeps her vision “on” in her one eye. December 25, 2017. . Last Christmas night Oscar had 24 seizures after our families left.
