Hi! I hope you don’t mind my asking. I was curious if you could explain a bit about how you use electronic AAC with a vision impairment. I’m also an AAC user and it’s something I’ve wondered about!
Sure! First off Kiku's visual impairment is dynamic (think that the right word), it changes depending on what ever else is going on and its als brain based so its different that eye based visual impairment (which Kiku also has but glasses help with that). Kiku has a reduced visual field (lower vision very bad, perifrials not great some days better than others some days completely gone, more common on right side. Some time visual field narrows to a small cone or when Kiku is focused on say walking and listening to surrounding, vision goes away entirely) the inability to see more than a few, or on bad days, one thing at a time, reduced contrast sensitivity (harder time seeing things if they don't contrast enough), sometimes Kiku's eyes shake, and probably more things Kiku can't think of now. But it all fluctuates, some days have more vision than others, but always takes consious effort to figure out what looking at, easier if look at familiar thing. Hope this helps understand how AAC can be hard.
How Kiku uses AAC is complicated and it depends on the day. On good vision days (or days where navigating more button presses is harder) Kiku uses a larger grid size (several apps, although mostly Proloquo2go and Speak4Yourself recently. On bad days Kiku uses a smaller grid size or LAMP on an ipad and a accent. The accent has a keyguard so Kiku can use it tactically rather than visually (although it is a work in progress). High contrast symbols help and Kiku uses colors to help find buttons too, although how the buttons are colored varies from app to app.
Kiku also uses a handful of tactile signs with partners, and is working on learning deafblind manual (a sign alphabet modified for touch based on BSL fingerspelling.) Kiku is working on getting a set of tactile symbols but only have one so far. And one day Kiku would like a set of those buttons used for dogs to communicate with tactile elements on them. But that would require money and a dedicated space Kiku doesn't currently have.
Kiku is also looking into other access methods such as switch access with auditory prompts but currently doesn't have a switch or anything to use as one.
Kiku uses low tech AAC a lot but hasn't figured out the best solution for bad vision days with that.
Eventually (once have a wheelchair or adaptive stroller) Kiku wants a communication board on a tray with tactile cues on it (braille and/or textures).
Part of what helps is being a multimodal communicator and having access to a ton of different ways to communicate.

I've been thinking a lot about how my ocular head postures and odd visual behaviours were punished throughout my life.
I was told off for lying my head flat against a book to read or write neatly, or resting my head against my shoulder so I could see my teacher better. I would fiddle with objects without looking at them so I had a good understanding of what they were, and my teachers hated that. I was told off for overreaching and knocking things over, and for tentatively reaching and coming up short.
The amount of times I got yelled at because I couldn't find an object in a clutter of other objects is uncountable. But I would get yelled at more for marking important objects with yellow so I could find them easier.
There were so many signs I couldn't see properly growing up, and all of my adaptations were punished. I didn't get accomodations because despite constantly struggling and being bruised and exhausted and crying from stress nobody bothered to believe me when I talked about my vision. All the ways I tried to accommodate myself were swiftly put down because I didn't behaviour normal or sighted enough for them.
I wonder what my life would have been like if I'd gotten help.

July is Disability Pride month!
Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is a type of bilateral visual impairment which is caused by damage to the brain rather than damage to the eyes. It is diagnosed when children show abnormal visual responses that aren't caused by the eyes themselves
Did you know? Adults can also develop problems with their vision after a traumatic brain injury (such as a head injury or stroke that damages the brain). Veterans may be at higher risk for visual problems as a result of combat injuries.
These problems are sometimes called acquired CVI,  but it isn’t the same as CVI. A brain injury that happens later in life usually has different symptoms than CVI, which is caused by an injury early in life.

thyroid cyst alcohol
Thyroid cyst alcohol ablation is a medical technique in which alcohol is injected into a thyroid cyst to reduce or eradicate it. This minimally invasive procedure is widely used to treat benign thyroid cysts that produce symptoms such as swallowing or breathing difficulties. The alcohol injection causes a controlled inflammation in the cyst, which eventually leads to its collapse and absorption by the body. This operation is regarded as a safe and effective alternative to surgery for the treatment of thyroid cysts, offering relief from related symptoms while avoiding the risks associated with surgical intervention.

i would really like to have a teacher like gojo because of how skilled he is in his field. BUT, i will always be in fear whenever im near him because that guy... he's crazy. literally. on crack cocaine level crazy or something. crazy. mental. idk. so insane that it seems sane. (maybe it's me who's nuts with everything goin' on)
but it was really fun to see him teach yuji tho (if you can call that teaching) with yuji whining about not having cursed techniques like those from video games while gojo being all, it's fine from outside and worrying about sukuna's technique engraving on yuji from inside.
and obviously, can tell he cares about his students and jujutsu world a lot really.
now, scenes worth mentioning: starting strong with sukuna and yuji's fight/conversation, especially the punch yuji landed on sukuna's face lmao. the deeper pov of gojo from gojo and ichiji's conversation and then, yuji waking up behind shoko ieiri and their gasps haha. (wait, how did gojo see yuji waking up tho? with his blindfold and all (which im still very curious about btw)) the restaurant scene of geto and jogo. and oh, the falling practice with panda, not training but falling practice instead. (although... what was that about megumi's hand going through the stairs?) and last, the principal's dolls still creep me out but nonetheless.

if I may, humbly request Aya Limbus Company X reader. She has gone ignored far too long by the fans, it may be anything you want to write about, just let it be her. Thank you.
You get me, we can divide the two, you get your lovely overlooked wife and I get the POS she’s teamed up with (unironically one of the npcs that stuck with me hhh). And it’s sad to see that she got forgotten so quickly. Though with all that happened in cI, I get why. I won’t lie, I’m falling asleep a wee bit as I type this but there won’t be much time to write anyways. So if you’ve got more specific questions or anything, I can elaborate on how I think she would be
I’ve got some general relationship hcs. Like I think the hardest part of getting to be in a relationship with her is becoming something different than friends. She seems pretty work-focused and understands her grim reality better than many. So she is lovely and kind to you, but cautious about inviting romantic affection. Plus i get a feeling that some advances would genuinely fly over her head (while other times she doesn’t indulge because of how much is going on around you two). All in all though, she is at peace with her mortality and if you two grow close enough, she figures there might not be a better time to reciprocate. Though optimistic, she makes sure from the start that you know that the setting you found yourselves in is not one that will help to foster romance. Despite that, she wants to make the best of the cards you’ve been dealt. It can be little trinkets that she leaves in your pockets or spontaneous adventures she takes you on. Even though they are never anything elaborate, she can make any little outing special with her approach. If you’re working together, she’s never afraid to call you out or help guide you. However, you’ve still got her endless trust. Off the clock you are her significant other but during work hours, you are her partner, a valuable one at that. And whenever your reality and job feels too bleak and dreary, she is there to keep you going and motivate you
As for more suggestive headcanons, I think I’ve got a rough idea on how she would be. I think she’s more so a person that goes with the flow in terms of giving you freedom with to how you want to do things. She wouldn’t judge or react badly to your preferences. Might verbally take the lead, either guiding you or praising you for your hard job

Kiku doesn't remember if Kiku posted about Kiku's white cane here or not. But this is Angel. ☺️
Tumblr media
Angel is a pink Ambutech graphite slimline folding cane with the handle covered in pink ducktape because Kiku couldn't handle the feeling of the foam handle and a rolling marshmallow tip. Kiku also has non-rolling marshmallow tips but prefers the rolling marshmallow tip. Kiku takes Kiku's cane when goes anywhere out of the house and it helps a lot.
Kiku also applied to the National federation of the blind's free white cane program so Kiku will have a backup but it hasn't arrived yet. It will be a rigid (non folding) plain white cane with a black handle and a metal glide tip.
Kiku eventually wants to get a regular (non slimline) version of Angel and a rigid version to see how they are different.
