Another way all of these struggles are connected, is the way media decides to automatically exonerate the perpetrators.

It is clear as day, how corporate US media decides to be complicit in the normalization of violence by deciding how it wants to cover things. The bias is in the headlines, and these are just two specific examples.
There is no way that these companies should be getting away with this. There needs to be groups of people to hold a fire to them. If nothing is done, fascists will continue to openly define how events are perceived by the general public in media.

There have been several attempts to decriminalize many crimes, nearly all of which have been painted as ridiculous ("omg when the headline seems like it's an Onion headline but it's actually not you've clearly lost it!" kind of stuff).
Want to know the kind of theft that causes the greatest economic loss? It's not bank robberies, burglary, or auto theft (all three of which are crimes) -- no, it's wage theft. In fact, wage theft cause three times as much loss as other forms of theft combined. [source] [another souce] [yet another source][yep another source][and another one]
Wage theft is not a crime. But it is a violaton of contract/technically illegal. The various systems put into place to manage wage theft don't include the cops -- essentially, these companies are given the benefit of the doubt if their employee's aren't being paid what is due to them. The assumption is that there was an accounting error or calculation mistake or a bad input. There are systems in place to correct these kinds of failures, and there are supposed to be safeguards in place to identify bad actors (that is... to identify companies that are engaging in criminal-like behavior, rather than a company that had a few accounting errors).
In recent years, the extent of wage theft has made it apparent that companies do NOT deserve the benefit of the doubt in most cases - in fact, there are some companies that rely on wage theft to pad their profits. Yet, wage theft is still not a crime, despite its rampant damage.
When someone argues that we need to decriminalize certain crimes, what they're really saying is that human beings by and large really do deserve the benefit of the doubt that we're already extending to corporations. We would also need to adapt the system to identify bad actors (that is, to identify people who are actually engaging in criminal-like behavior), but the kid who forgot to put their seatbelt on that one time because the were distracted - or the kid who rode the subway without a ticket - or the kid who was "loitering" (but seriously no they weren't) - or hell, that kid who got a call for help while shopping and then accidentally walked out with something in their pouch/pocket and then is caught for "shop lifting" which they honestly weren't doing - don't wind up with criminal records for an actual mistake that was made by an actual human being. They deserve the benefit of the doubt way more than any greedy corporation!
"But what if that kid is just saying they got an emergency call so they can get away after they've been caught?"
That's why there needs to be a system to catch bad actors, because, yeah, there are people out there who shoplift for profit. You get caught with something you didn't buy once? Possibly an accident - give them the benefit of the doubt. Happens a few times? Maybe this person needs to see a doctor for brain fog or needs financial assistance... Happens repeatedly? Hmm, suspicious. Let's flag that person as a bad actor.
Indvidual people deserve the benefit of the doubt a lot more than corporations, so why are we giving so much benefit of the doubt to corporations than we are to people?
Maybe "Decriminalize crime!" sounds like an Onion headline, but the truth is, for a lot of crimes, it's actually a very reasonable course of action. It's too bad so much of news media is bought off and pushed to make good ideas that hurt the bottom line of greedy corporations that they write the "Onion headline" version to make it sound like it's chaos or ridiculous.
Mathematically and economically speaking, wage theft is the most costly theft in the USA. Yet it's not a crime. Nobody goes to jail for wage theft. But a person shoplifting (yes, actually stealing things) can get locked up for stealing baby formula or OTC meds out of desperation.
*EDIT* Wage theft has a patchwork system that varies by local government and by state. [source] Florida doesn't have a system, despite having the third largest labor force in the country. It's a serious problem that doesn't get enough ink. Here's another article about it.
Pretend, for a moment, that you’re an 18-year-old teenager from a family living below the poverty line. One day, you make a silly mistake and get a ticket for it. Nothing major - maybe you rode the subway without a ticket or smoked too close to the entrance of a building. Maybe you were loitering. Either way, one thing is for sure: you definitely don’t have the money to pay the ticket. So you don’t. Eventually, you miss the deadline to pay your ticket, and you get a letter in the mail that says you have to go to court. But your life is chaotic, and a court date for a missed ticket is the least of your concerns. Your family moves constantly, which disrupts your life and puts you behind in school. You have one disabled parent and one parent who is always working, leaving you to raise your younger siblings by yourself. You have no means of transportation. There is rarely any food in the cupboards. The utilities are constantly getting shut off. The week that you were supposed to go to court, your family gets another eviction notice, your cousin ends up in the hospital, and your parent finds out that their disability payments are being reduced. So you miss your court date. Since you missed the court date, you automatically lose your case - now you have no hope of arguing your way out of the ticket, which you still can’t afford to pay. You can do community service hours instead of paying, but you don’t have time to do that, now that you have to work part-time and odd jobs on top of everything else to keep your parents off the streets and your siblings out of foster care. You know that you probably won’t finish high school on time, let alone fulfill your hours. You might be able to explain your circumstances to the judge, but you have no idea how to go about doing that now that you’ve missed your court date, your literacy skills are years behind thanks to your constant game of school roulette, and even though legal help is available to you, you don’t know how to access it or if you can afford to do so. But that’s still the least of your concerns - since you missed your court date, the judge has also charged you with failure to appear.
Which means you now have an active warrant out for your arrest. And just like that, you’re now a part of the criminal justice system. A silly mistake that a middle-class teenager could have solved with Mommy and Daddy’s chequebook in a single afternoon has caused you weeks or months of stress and headaches over a process you don’t fully understand, and has ended in criminal charges. Instead of having a funny story to tell over dinner when you come home from college next Thanksgiving, you are now facing additional fines (that you still can’t pay), the possibility of a couple of nights in jail, the possible suspension of your driver’s license, and the possibility of being taken into custody any time you interact with the police. The next time your parent comes home drunk and violent, or someone breaks into the house, you think twice about calling the cops - you now have to decide if every emergency is “worth” the possibility of being hauled off to jail. And in the meantime, the circumstances that caused that first mistake haven’t gone away - you still don’t have the money to pay for the subway, you are still more likely to live in a house filled with smokers, you still can’t afford quit-smoking aids, you still live in a chaotic household that deeply affects your mental health, and you still don’t understand the legal system or who you’re supposed to talk to for information and resources. So while those other teenagers get to go through life believing that they were “good kids who sometimes made silly mistakes”, you now get to go through life thinking of yourself as a criminal. And that might be the most damaging thing of all.
When I worked with homeless teenagers and young adults, I saw this process play out again and again and again and again. The kids often considered themselves “criminals” or “bad kids” because they had arrest warrants and criminal records, but few of them had ever actually committed a serious or violent crime - the vast majority were simply unlucky kids who did something stupid and didn’t have the skills or resources (or wealthy parents) required to get them off the hook. I had classmates in my upper-middle-class high school who did far worse things with far fewer consequences, because Mommy was a lawyer or Daddy was an RCMP officer, and some of those kids grew up to be lawyers or police officers themselves. The kids I worked with never got that opportunity. Second chances cost money, and the difference between a “crime” and a “mistake” has less to do with the offense, and more to do with the circumstances you were born into.
So when we’re talking about crime, punishment and who is “worthy” of being helped, maybe keep that in mind.
#politics#law#the dystopia i live in is the one where the things that sound like onion headlines are actually smart and right#how is the usa considered a place of freedom anyway#we lock up so many of our citizens it's ridiculous#and so many people are locked up for basically nothing while corporations steal billions and get away withit#and this wage theft is happening for ALREADY SUPPRESSED WAGES

McDonald's attempted to do the same thing with the media when a woman was served coffee that was too hot. When she attempted to add cream and sugar to it, the coffee spilled on her leaving second and third-degree burns on her thighs and legs. She had to have skin graphs and was in critical condition for several days. It took over two years for her to recover from the burns.
When the woman sued to get her medical bills covered, McDonald's PR firm spun the story into the woman being overly litigious, making jokes about how coffee is supposed to be hot. Comedians didn't hesitate to jump on the PR narrative and made jokes about it for decades.

Pride banned Jews?!?
So it's that time of year again that I see people circulating stuff that is completely fabricated about what they imagine happened at Chicago Dyke March in 2017.
First, Dyke March is not Pride. It is not meant to be apolitical or single-issue. It is explicitly anti-imperialist, anticapitalist, and, yes, antizionist. It's not the big mainstream pride Parade that has corporate sponsors (and ads for gay tourism in Israel), it's a small radical grassroots demonstration.
Ok now that that's out of the way, they did not "ban Jews". I was there. They did not "ban Jewish symbols". They did not ask anyone to leave because of their Jewish pride flag.
What actually happened was three women who turned out to be employed by Israeli pinkwashing operation A Wider Bridge participated in the march with a rainbow flag that featured a blue star of david in the center. I remember seeing it and disliking it bc it gave me Zionist vibes but neither I nor anyone else bothered them about it.
After the march there was a cookout in the park. The women were asked to leave by a Jewish member of the Dyke March Collective after several hours of hanging out at the cookout because they were harassing other marchgoers.
Immediately publications like Forward, Tablet, JTA, as well as more mainstream publications started running stories making wild untrue claims which you can still read if you Google it because none of these were ever corrected or retracted. It's clear that these AWB agents had press releases pre-written and ready to fire as soon as they managed to provoke any reaction that they could spin into a controversy.
The photos that ran along with these headlines were also misleading. One of them showed a photo of a rainbow flag with a white star in the center. The star on the flag I saw was blue, and the shade of the star has specific political connotations. Showing a different flag with the politically significant color removed is extremely misleading. The one that was carried in the march (and which, again, wasn't banned!) looked like this:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e857a5b30a3ff3c24e96f746c835f79a/23e4bde3de583bc2-db/s540x810/8a4ee0e26bed17c326fe119db605a2a40f3c2f08.jpg)
Another banner image, this one in a New York Times article, showed a young woman with dark curly hair holding a sign that says "this is who we are". She was clearly chosen to feature because of her stereotypically Jewish features. The article implies that she is one of the supposedly banned Jews. This is false. You know how I know? Bc that was the friend I was there with that day! She does not identify as Jewish, she looks like that bc she is Italian, and she had no idea she was being photographed!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2ee2402e66ca310a900678ea09df177f/23e4bde3de583bc2-1d/s540x810/a580a77fa58fe5c7d47316de25d16433cb81c8ab.jpg)
I had a hat decorated with red and black stars of David, and the following year a bunch of us wore Workers Circle sashes with Yiddish text (which uses the Hebrew alphabet) as well. No one who wasn't employed by a Zionist organization was asked to leave or even questioned about anything related to Zionism or Jewish identity.
I'm resigning myself to the fact that this is going to get dug up and passed around every year and people will believe what they want to believe, but if you hear claims that some queer group "banned Jews" or something similar, please look at the source for the information and if possible try to talk to actual Jewish people who participate in the community events being discussed. And if you hear this about Chicago Dyke March in specific, please correct people. I feel like I'm going insane when this many people are insisting that what I saw and experienced wasn't real and pointing to the barrage of misleading articles as what I should believe over my own experiences.

Spain lied about not selling weapons to Israel.
Even after October 7th, Spain has sold more than 1 million € of weapons to Israel. Norway and Finland make it possible.
In January, Spain made headlines word-wide when the government's Minister of Exteriors, José Manuel Albares (PSOE), claimed in Congress and later again in a radio interview that Spain had stopped selling weapons to Israel ever since October 7th. Israel's intensification of violence in Gaza following October 7th meant that, on top of decades of apartheid and ethnic cleansing, between October 7th and January 23rd Israel had already killed 28,000 people and forced 2 million out of their home. In this context, many people were demanding their governments stop arming and funding the genocide of the Palestinian people, and here on Tumblr and other social media sites like Twitter I think we all saw the many posts praising the Spanish government for this.
Well, it turns out it was a lie.
According to Albares, "Since October 7th there are no more weapons exportations [from Spain] to Israel". But in November alone, Spain exported weapons to Israel for 987,000€, as was published on the Spanish Government's official website dedicated to exterior commerce (Comex). A researcher from Centre Delàs (an independent centre for peace studies) found it and published it, and it has also been verified by newspapers such as elDiario.es.
This 987,000€ worth of weapons in November was not the only ammunition that Spain has sent to Israel in 2023. In 2023, Spain exported a total of 1.48 million € in war material to Israel.
All of the weapons sent in November come from the factory of Nammo Palencia (Castilla y León), a corporation that is 50% property of the Government of Norway and 50% owned by a public Finnish business. However, even if the owners are foreigners, the ammunition was sent from Spain and thus it had to be authorized by the an organism of the Spanish Government named Junta Interministerial de Defensa y Doble Uso, whose deliberations on whether a weapons exportation is accepted or denied are kept secret. The only cases where they have denied exporting weapons to Israel have been when they thought that Israel would re-sell these weapons to the Philippines.
Spain has had a close relation with Israel for years. As published by the Spanish Government, Spain has sold 20 million € of weapons to Israel between 2012 and 2022. Spain also buys weapons and military software from Israel (for example, the Spanish Intelligence Service has been using the Israeli software Pegasus to illegally spy on Catalan activists, journalists, politicians and civil society members and their relatives to attack the Catalan independence movement), and Spain has continued buying from Israel and allocating defense contracts to Israel even after the October 7th attacks. It is very difficult to track the concessions of public contracts such as buying weapons, but some contracts have been known. For example, on November 24th 2023, Spain bought 287.5 million € of missiles from Israel. This is not unusual: between 2011 and 2021, it is publicly known that Spain bought war material from Israel for at least 268 million €, but experts say that the real number could be two or three times as much.
Spain has also continued allocating concessions to Israel. For example, on December 15th 2023 Spain allocated a contract worth over 576 million € to Israel for a rocket launcher programme. On November 22nd, Spain allocated another another Israeli company to provide missiles for 237 million € at the same time as the Spanish army bought Israeli inhibitors for 1.4 million €. The very next day, November 23rd, Spain signed another military allocation to Israel for 82,600€. The following week, Spain signed yet another allocation with a different Israeli military corporation for 3.7 million €.
Spain also allows Israeli weapon manufacturing companies to produce weapons through their branches located in Spain. This way, Israeli weapons make their way to markets with which Israel doesn't have diplomatic ties but Spain does, like Saudi Arabia. And since Spain is a member of NATO, Israeli weapons produced in Spain are approved according to NATO standards and access it easily. In the same way, these Israeli weapons manufacturers also access European Union defense funds through their branches in Spain. (source).
As I said, I saw a lot of positive posts around when Albares said Spain was going to embargo, but I haven't seen any post about how they didn't do it. I also (personally) haven't seen anything on international media, and barely anything on Spanish media, which is already busy with the PSOE covid material corruption scandal. So I share this in the hope of helping put pressure on Spain to cut all ties with Israel immediately.
SHAME ON EVERYONE WHO GIVES ISRAEL THE MATERIAL AND MONEY THAT WILL BE USED TO MASSACRE THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE. SHAME ON SPAIN, NORWAY, AND FINLAND.
#i've been meaning to post this for a few days but never manmaged to finish writing since i don't have internet at work and i barely have#time to do anything else than sleep eat and prepare work stuff when i'm home#so I'm late but this is still relevant#palestine#gaza#israel#free palestine#spain#norway#finland#españa#end genocide#bds#boycott divest sanction#free gaza#peace#anti military#💬
