OKAY. I FINALLY HAVE ANOTHER ESSAY RANT THING BUT ITS NOT IHNMAIMS SADLY.
I find it so interesting how REAL the desperation in the delivery of other mother saying "DONT LEAVE ME, ILL DIE WITHOUT YOU." is,, of course within the nature of the beldams character you'd find yourself questioning the honesty of this statement.
Tumblr media
i mean duh we're not the 11 year old hurriedly rushing away from an entity we'd briefly been attached to and found solace in. from the start, other mother seems eerie and just. OFF. but i find it endlessly interesting how progressively desperate other mother is for coraline to stay with her. its incredibly vague what other mother does to the previous children in the movie. most people interpret it as her LITERALLY eating the children or eating their souls. but it seems like there is genuine attachment there, although incredibly unhealthy. its there.
Tumblr media
while talking with the cat, not only does it comment that it thinks the mother simply wants something to love other than herself. but i noticed coraline literally walks away from the abhorrent situation she's left to deal with, only to end up right back where she started. which I think is a representation of how unhealthy coralines escapism through this world is. she is being neglected of attention and rather than branch out, she retreats to a world that seems much more welcoming. but is just as unhealthy as the last. walk around the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is coralines world. at this age, her house, her parents, her. attachments. thats her whole world, and even as she detaches from it. humans are creatures of habit, so she ends up in practically the same place. and personally i think that says a lot about the other mother as well. confined to the pink palace apartments, she seeks out children who are unhappy and gives them everything they want in exchange for them blinding themselves to their pasts and being entirely dependent on her. and with each child, they sew the buttons and allow her to literally love them to death. its all she has, she exists for this soul purpose. or at least that's what shes convinced herself. the gap she has between reality, tragedy and triumph, to carve something she believes as perfection to appease others is all she is.
Tumblr media
and as each other child shattered beneath the weight of her affection and bent to her charm, coraline falters. she refuses. she DARES to believe shed rather go back to her real parents, to realize shes not too far gone. its unpredictable, it breaks that mask of delusion SHES blinded herself. BLINDED OTHERS with. and brings her back to the cold reality that is the blank void she's been confined to. between reality. where she can only create half baked imitations of what's around her and pretend that what shes made is better. but who else is there for her to impress? to help. to play with.
just like with coraline, now that shes moved and lost her friends. her parents are all she has left to cling to.
BUT IDK thats just my interpretation

Rewatching Coraline and here are some things I've noticed so far:
-When Coraline goes to visit Mrs. Spink and Mrs. Forcable, the card on the top of the pile on the table is the five of hearts, but then the pot of candy is removed, it's a four of spades.
-The vehicle The Other Father is driving is a praying mantis, (pretty sure) which is ironic, considering he is killed by his 'wife' in technicality
-The 'Soul' Ring is shown during the performance scene when Coraline is picked up from the crowd
-The Other Mother's red outfit can be slightly seen under her normal clothes when asking Coraline to sew in buttons, possibly representing how her true colours are showing
-Coraline's Other Father has different glasses to her actual father
-The Mouse circus has a 'R' on the 'walls'
-The set of draws shown mere seconds into the film is the bug that blocks Coraline from the Door
-By the mirror where Coraline gets trapped, there is a painting of (I think) her house
-The mask Wybie uses when he pulls Coraline out of the mirror is the chicken oven glove used earlier by the Other Mother
-Coraline naturally has brown hair, shown in a photo after she realises her parents are missing and visits Spink & Forcible
-When Coraline's parents are shown in the mirror, her father is wearing glasses, even though Coraline used his glasses when making her fake parents. They are different types of glasses, though, so it's possible he just has two pairs.
-when Coraline goes through the portal, it's no longer blue and purple, possibly showing how the illusion has been broken.
-The wallpaper in the normal world is vaguely floral, whereas in the other world, it's of beetles.
-When the other mother's creations are destroyed, a sand like substance spills out. It could be a reference to how dry clay crumbles when broken as a link to the book
-Before the whole plot, the snow globe had two figures by the fountain, but when they 'break out' the figures are gone
-The thing holding up Coraline's picture of her friends is a preying mantis
-Coraline's trousers are patched up with the fabric from the star shirt she got from the Other Mother
-The well is designed to look a lot like the tunnel portal
-Coraline has a pinkish mark around her throat when they throw the Other Mother's hand into the well, but it is gone in the next scene, which is funny because a lot of characters have some kind of red 'ring' on them, like the dog's red collars and a bunch of other examples
That is all! I am fully aware that I'm probably wrong with multiple observations and that is okay :)

WARNING:CONTAINS SPOILERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the film Coraline and Wybie threw the Beldam's hand and the key in the dwell thinking it was a good idea.
BUT HEAR ME OUT FOR A SECOND
When Wybie and Coraline first met and Wybie threw a rock in the dwell said "...so deep, if you fell to the bottom and looked up you'd see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day" and when Coraline went to the Other world, no matter the time of the day in the Real world, in the Other world it was always night. So technically the dwell is another portal to the Other world and when they threw the key in it they gave it to the Beldam.

Things I’ve noticed while watching coralline for the 1000th time
im gonna reboot and finish this tomorrow since i only got about halfway through the movie tonight  :)
1- the cat always responds non-verbally to what's going on in the 'real world'
2- there is a mushroom circle about the old well. mushroom circles are often associated with the fair folk, in past times, the Fae were thought to kidnap children from their homes
3- the seeds that coraline puts in the scene where it's raining outside are all amped up and used to lure her in, in the other world
4- while coraline is exploring the house there is a newly opened neck brace in her parents room
5- again while she's exploring, the only snow globe that's snowing is the one that her parents are later trapped in
6- in the room that has the tiny door, the wallpaper looks like it has a print resembling bugs/beetles
7- the way the two other parents harmonize when they say “see you soon” sounds oddly creepy(im sure it’s supposed to i just hadn't noticed it before)
8- the writing on the outside of the boxes outside of bobinsky’s door are in Russian
9- bobinsky’s name is Bob-In-Sky, and hes also the person highest in the pink palace, as well as having a hot air ballon in the circus mice performance
10- the pathway to the other mother’s house seems to get longer every time coralline goes through it
11- the outside in the other mother’s world looks more like a stage set than any other part of the movie
12- when coralline asks the other whybie if it hurt when the other mother took away his voice, he cuts her off and directs her towards the ballon in the sky
13- while coralline and her mom are out buying clothes they are by a store that has a sign reading “i (heart) mulch”, her mother usually drinking her coffee out of a mug reading the same thing and another mug, being seen on the drying rack in the kitchen
14- her mother says “wont be long” and then proceeds to get kidnapped by a giant spider woman
15- there are three of those shadow side-view portraits in the background in the dining room in the other world, and they look suspiciously like the lost children
16- the curtains in the room with the little door chance to resemble beetles during the scene where the other mother gets mad at her and throws her in the mirror right after
17- there are spider webs e v e r y w h e r e .

okay i saw this theory and i love it okay??:
so it goes that in the movie coraline, the people from the real world call her caroline so the other mother doesn’t hear them bc she only recognizes the name coraline

okay who wanna hear about my theory that this cat from Coraline is actually Dream of the Endless??
Tumblr media
so basically what i think is that the Beldam was actually one of Dream’s nightmares that went rouge, and Dream was imprisoned before he can go pursue her.
So like how Gault made the little dream dimension for Jed the Beldam crafted her own little dreamscape at the Pink Palace, -and uses that dreamscape to lure and feast on children’s soul to feed her own powers.
By the time Dream found her she has already grew into something more than a dream from the souls of the children she consumed, and bc she is no longer a dream, Dream cannot directly intervene, but at same time he cannot allow more children to fall pray to her, so he set out to guard and guide the Beldam’s next target, Coraline.
Tumblr media
And it worked, he was very impressed by the bravery and cleverness of the girl, even if she did pick him up and threw him.

In all seriousness . credits to : @kmwilllose for this . - GENERATION LOSS THEORY . So I've seen two images that look .. similar .
Tumblr media
niki . - GENLOSS
Tumblr media
coraline . - Coraline -- I might have some suspicions about these two . In genloss , the masks cause mind control . which is when you're in one world , but you're in another as well . In coraline , the stitched doll eyes cause to sew ones two worlds . And as you can see in the pictures , coraline and niki . Both look like they're crawling through the same tube .
this is only something I've seen just now , and thought about for some time . It's for the funny bit you know :)
BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY ! . A FILM THEORYY !

Ok I watch Coraline recently bc of course it's October and I realized -
Wybie said he took the doll from his Grandma, which implies that the Beldam modified it to look like Coraline, and then left it in his house? I feel like it's generally assumed that the Beldam has power over the Pink Palace, but the thing with the doll and Wybie makes me wonder if she has power outside the house?? And how much?? How did the doll even get there?
Because we see her making it at the beginning of the movie but then it's in Wybie's house?
I'm sure somebody's caught this and there's a theory on this somewhere but I'm so curious

Been getting back into the Coraline fandom and looking at all the theories. One theory states that one of that this ghost children is the daughter of Mr. Bobinsky, due to their matching long faces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Presumably, the Other Father took the form of Mr. Bobinsky to lure her in. But what if it wasn't actually the Other Father we know at the time, and it was actually the Other Bobinsky?
Mr. Bobinsky was still living in the house when Coraline came along, so the Other Mother couldn't just get rid of him. He ether had to make a new Other Bobinsky, or in this case, make a new Other Father and give the Other Bobinsky a new role as an entertainer.
It's likely that his fatherly personality somewhat bleeds through his new entertainer personality. Unlike the Other Spink and Forcible, he actually talks to Coraline after the show and treats her rather lovingly, even kissing her hand.
When all of the Other Mother's creations start reverting to their original forms, Other Bobinsky still treats Coraline with kindness, while Other Spink and Forcible lash out at her violently.
It's likely that if he still had the mindset of the Other Father, he would have just given her the eye. But the Other Mother rewired his mind to that of a performer, though it seems she didn't completely remove that father part of his mind, leading to his personality being a mix of both. The father half still cares for Caroline, while the entertainer half wants to keep entertaining her. Doesn't help that his mind is unraveling along with his body and he's giving in to rat instincts.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that's my theory to add to the pile of Coraline theories. Probably won't get noticed among them all, but whatevs.

#TheGreatImpersonator reminds me of Coraline in the sense that C wants everything she “doesn’t have” (fame/notoriety) & searches for it somewhere else (other world), finds it’s not as it seems, w/ the Eye finds what she wants

“it’s good for lost things”

Random collection of things I noticed and immediately overthought while watching Coraline
I got to see Coraline in theatres for its 15th anniversary. It was amazing, if you can find a theatre near you that's playing it Go Watch It IT DESERVES THE BIG SCREEN SO MUCH. But anyway while I was watching it my little hamster brain kept noticing things and then ran around in circles on the drive home. So have some random observations.
I Cannot Eat and I Must Cook
The Other Mother is always cooking.  3 out of the 4 times Coraline goes to the Other world Other Mother is shown actively cooking.  Including after she’s gone full hangry and lost the plot.  The only time she’s not waiting for Coraline is her 3rd visit, and even then there’s a full spread of food waiting for her instead.  By this point my brain was fully spinning in little hamster ball circles thinking about idealized caricatures of mothers always cooking and the traditional jobs a mother’s ‘supposed’ to do.  But then on the drive home, I realized it was way simpler.  Coraline directly asks her real mom why she never cooks right in front of Little Me.  It’s literally just a direct response.
(Also, Other Wybie doesn't eat either, but that's cause his mouth literally can't open.)
Little Me's Fashion Choice
The Little Me doll wears a skirt!  When we first see real Coraline she’s in jeans.  The movie opens with them moving in and Wybie drops off the Little Me doll the next day, so there was no chance to see Coraline in anything other than jeans.  In fact we only see her in a skirt once, and that’s halfway through the movie in the clothes shopping scene.  But the Other Mother still puts Little Me in a skirt.  There’s this cool anniversary segment after the movie, and they showed some of the concept sketches for Coraline and she’s in a skirt in them, so that might be part of why Little Me’s in one, either as a nod or because the doll’s design was finalized before the costumes.  But looking at it through a strictly Watsonian reading, it makes sense that the Other Mother’s idea of proper clothes is more traditional.  She clearly adapts though, since Coraline’s star outfit has pants.
EYES
One of Wybie’s eye’s is bigger than the others.  This is mirrored in Other Wybie.
One of Charlie’s eye’s is higher than the other.  This is not mirrored in Other Father as far as I could tell.
I’ve seen others point out that Other Spink and Other Forcible have white buttons when they’re old and black buttons once they shed their skin and become young, as a reference to how the real Spink and Forcible can’t see well anymore.  But while the Others both get white buttons, only the real Miss Forcible has clouded eyes; Miss Spink’s eyes are still brown.
Coraline and Colors
Coraline’s favorite color is blue.  It’s the color of her hair, her fingernail polish, her comforter, her cyclops squid toy… But despite all this that’s not the color the movie associates with Coraline.  The movie actually associates Coraline with a whole bunch of warm, natural colors, mainly pinkish oranges.  Beyond that, there’s of course her iconic bright yellow rain coat of course, and a large spattering of mossy green.  Literally, the only time we don’t see her in warm colors is when she’s in the outfit Other Mother made her.  (Sidenote, what happened to her original clothes she changed out of?  Are they just gone forever in the Other world?).  To go full pretentious analysist, Coraline does seem to get a color for when she’s particularly closed off or guarded of this really desaturated grey tinged navy which is the color of both her jacket in the shopping scene and her vest when she’s squaring off.
Other Father’s smoking jacket/house coat is a red-orange, a little darker than most of Coraline’s clothes, fully falling in line with her colors rather than Other Mother’s pure red.  This doesn’t come from Charlie either, he’s in a green Michigan State sweatshirt pretty much the whole movie.  It’s a nice way to show his loyalty early (I know I’m not the first one to notice this, but it’s still neat.) The picture frame in her room of the goodbye picture is notably in Coraline’s orange with some kind of swirly pattern. The picture in the Other world has a different gold metal looking frame. Fancier, but more importantly not in Coraline’s colors anymore. Despite being copies of her friends the Other friends pressure Coraline to stay while she’s having her realization freak out. (Mention to young Other Spink and Other Forcible whose outfits are technically pink and green but slightly off from Coraline’s and by the time we see them again during the scavenger hunt the colors have shifted to really cold undertoned, almost unnatural shades of them.)
Mel is pretty much exclusively in cream to beige.  The only real color we see for her is her bag and jacket first seen in the shopping scene, both of which are in Coraline’s colors, if significantly more desaturated to fit her look better.  The car scene became really interesting to look at because Mel’s in Coraline’s colors while Coraline, in her dark jacket is visibly not for the first time in the movie.  Wybie’s grandma at the end of the movie is in a really soft yellow dress with an orange sash, neatly aligning her Coraline too, which is also really fun!
But the most interesting person, color wise is actually Wybie.  I’m serious, it’s really cool!  Wybie’s big color, is obviously black, and slivery-white as thanks to his helmet, gloves, and reflective patches.  Meanwhile Other Wybie is only associated with black since Other Mother’s ‘improvements’ sort of boy-next-doorified his grunge look.  He and Other Mother are really the only ones whose outfits (originally) mirror their counterparts.  What really makes it fun is Wybie’s secondary color.  Wybie’s bike, which makes two very memorable appearances, is bright red.  There is next to no true red in the real world until the ending scene.  Wybie’s colors are the exact same as the Other Mother’s.  And the only other color he has?  The creepy green light from his helmet, the same as the final fight with the Other Mother the mirror into the prison room makes when Other Mother (and Other Wybie) yank Coraline through it.
