Please explain the vday video lore im new to the fandom!!!!
oh, sure! this is pretty much one of the biggest phandom controversies ever lmao so. super taboo topic too, people only got comfy even mentioning it within the past few years. tldr it was a private video of phil talking about their relationship that got leaked and caused them to be outed. detailed explanation under the cut bc it's long lol
basically in like 2010 phil recorded a video while dan was away on a family vacation (i think india) talking about how much he loved him and going into a bit of detail on like, their first date, etc etc (references to the manchester eye and avatar 3d come from this video as phil mentioned them kissing for the first time on the eye and also at avatar lol) and in the video phil said it was a Valentine's Day gift for dan as dan wasn't there to celebrate with him. he posted it privately and that was that. ive seen the video once but it was a while ago, mostly i remember a lot of little drawings of fireworks and cherries lmao. which, more lore, but. not for this rant lol
then a year later, 2011, youtube went through a glitch that unprivated everybody's private videos and the video was leaked. dan and phil put out a statement or wtv saying they had recorded it as an april fools prank for their viewers but they scrapped it because they worried people might take it seriously, and asked people to not spread the video around. luckily the phandom was still fairly small at this time and not too many people saw the video so it wasn't a huge deal.
THEN in 2012, it got unprivated again due to Another glitch, and this time (basically right after they'd gotten really popular) people went crazy over it. dan and phil asked people not to share it but it didnt work, and there are a lot of receipts from back then of both of them (but especially dan) getting super defensive about their sexualities. they copyrighted anyone who tried to repost the video and phil was still taking it down up until at least 2018 (i dont know of any vids being taken down later than that but im not sure).
the reason it was a big deal was pretty much just bc of the gigantic breach of privacy lmao. dan and phil were literally outed and people couldn't keep quiet and respectful about it. people got ahold of this private thing and then when dnp got defensive about it, instead of stopping, viewers kept pushing. i think it was a mix of 'wow this video is cute also phan is real' and 'the more upset and defensive dnp get the more it proves that the video isn't a joke' and also a good portion of the phandom was too young to recognize the impact they were making. not to excuse them, but like. they were 12 years old finding out their favorite ship was real and they weren't mature enough to shut up about it.
honestly it's just really sad to think about lmao. they were so young and they went through soooo much bs. it's amazing that theyre still together honestly, atp their relationship is literally unbreakable. there was a whole breakup theory after the video leaked the second time actually, bc they did less joint content for a while there before they launched dnpg. i never read up on that but im sure somebody's got a rundown on the main points if you're interested lol.
im sure somebody has a link to the video if you really want to see it? it's up on youtube somewhere (possibly unlisted) and i know somebody put it on tumblr a while back. i don't know where it is though, you'll have to ask around. i don't personally see any harm in watching it at this point- they're out and grownups now and so are we, so as long as you arent spreading it around or being generally disrespectful lmao i say go wild. not everyone will agree with that tho, like i said it was a reeeally taboo topic for a while and a lot of newer phannies honestly might not even know about it. i wasn't personally there when it happened but i was an 11 year old with internet access in 2017 and i literally took notes on dnp lore deepdives 😭
anyway that's about it! if anyone has other things they think i should add/edit lmk ☺️

STAY STAY STAY IS THE AIRPORT NAPKIN SONG WRITTEN IN JANUARY 2010
So. Yeah. Hear Me Out. Ok so, first of all, Stay Stay Stay is copyrighted as being written in 2010.
Tumblr media
As we know from the Lover Journals, Taylor finished Speak Now on June 16, 2010 and then didn't write anything for 6 months due to a writer's block, until she wrote All Too Well (soundcheck rant version) in December 2010. But let's take a step back.
On January 13, 2010, Taylor posts this on MySpace: "Thank you January. I have had this month off. I have walked on snow-covered grass and discovered new coffee shops and laughed hysterically with friends about things that probably weren’t technically funny. I’ve written songs on napkins and sat at a giant table with my whole family on my mother’s birthday, all of us in one place for the first time in too long."
So when the next record, Speak Now was out, obviously people were curious to know which song this was. The most popular theory was Back To December but it can't be (you'll see why in a minute).
On May 20, 2011, Taylor says: The weirdest place I have ever written a song is probably in an airport, and I got an idea so fast that I just had to run to the bathroom at the airport, grab a paper towel and write lyrics on the paper towel," she said. "I still have it. I still have it in a box in my room."
On September 1, 2011, Taylor mentions the Napkin Song again:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, it's not Back To December cause the song was obviously already out in 2011.
She said: It's not out yet. It seems like she has plans to release the song on TS4. If you look at the Red Credits, Stay Stay Stay and State Of Grace were recorded together. Taylor also said that State Of Grace was one of the first songs to have been written for the album, so by extention, Stayx3 was recorded early in the process as well.
To be fair, there's still the possibility of the napkin song being an unrelased song that was dropped when TS4 got a makeover, after all we're still missing like 15 songs and most of them are from 2011, so it makes sense that she didn't want a third 2010 song on the record, but it's also true that Taylor was thinking about this goddamn napkin song.
At this point, she's exactly a week shy of writing Red the song (which turns 13 today, welp), a song which, as we know, expands her vision for the next album, prompting her to bring on Dann Huff to rework Red, Begin Again and Starlight, and then moves to LA to work with Max Martin. And, you know, the rest is history.

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.
6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the Lord. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. 8 You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.
9 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life.
14 But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. 17 Let me not be put to shame, Lord, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead. 18 Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.
19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. 22 In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.
23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. — Psalm 31 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright ©1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® All rights reserved worldwide. prologue:
in 2006-07, pat robertson stepped down as the ceo of cbn and appointed his son, gordon, to take his place. one of the first things gordon did for the network was to plan a reboot for one of their shows. this turned into the little, soon to be big, project called superbook reimagined
with the reboot, the whole premise of the plot was the same as the original. oppositely, the names for the kids (minus gizmo) were different. they were no longer called chris peeper and joy but they were now two 22nd-23rd century friends who go by the names of chris quantum and joy pepper
reimagined, of course, did bring a divide within the classic fandom since the majority hated the reboot (due to its multiple changes) while a handful of people appreciated the futuristic aspect of the series
an introduction to reimagined:
• developed in 2006, pilot aired in 2008, released in 2011 and ended in 2021
• the show is set around the 22nd-23rd century
• the series was nominated for a daytime emmy award for its main title, graphic design and opening/promotions back in 2014*
• in 2006, the working title for the series was going to be superbook 2.0, but it later changed into the official title of superbook reimagined instead
• while many can remember a giant adventure to be the 6th episode of s1, it was actually used as the first ever pilot of the series
• reimagined was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of classic sb
• according to one of the art directors and designers for sb, reimagined was originally planned to be in 2d, but cbn scrapped the idea and wanted it to be in 3d instead
• reimagined has two official taglines: "his word's forever alive!" and "the bible is alive!"
• in 2016, cbn released a video titled superbook's gospel presentation and there were three versions of the same presentation that featured chris, joy and gizmo respectively. there were many changes to the presentation depending on which version you were viewing. for example, one part of the chris version has him saying "God made you, uniquely you, and has a very cool plan for your life" whereas joy and giz's versions cut out the "very cool" part. another thing that's different is after peter's apology, chris and joy's versions say "so, what do you think? it's not that complicated, is it?". gizmo's version completely cuts out this part and says something else. on the official sb youtube channel, you can only find chris and joy's versions but you can find giz's version on dailymotion.
(fun fact: the presentation that is normally used within official media is joy's version!)
• there are multiple references to classic in reimagined. for example, there is concept art of classic gizmo in the professor's lab, a picture of the classic trio in chris' bedroom, a toy of classic giz in the downstairs hallway of the quantums' house and reimagined joy's surname (pepper is an allusion to peeper)
• (cont.) the kids' names in some international dubs are changed to the classic versions. compared to the classic japanese ver, the japanese ver of reimagined doesn't keep the original names of chris and joy, however, they still keep the western names (supposedly, this might be due to copyright entanglements with tatsunoko productions)
• in 2018, reimagined made its japanese debut since 1981 and was well received
• during the development of reimagined, cbn released an official fan website for sb. it included videos of classic's history, games, a forum feature and etc.
• both chris and joy's surnames are a reflection of their family and their personal interests. chris' surname is quantum because his father and his late maternal grandad are/were scientists. it's also a reference to the discrete amount of energy in physics, which is also called a quantum. joy's surname is pepper because her family is associated with cooking (for example, her parents own a pizzeria, her grandma taught her how to bake at a young age and she herself has culinary expertise). it's also a reference to the vegetable/spice
• in 2023, cbn started a project to translate reimagined in sign language. this has only happened in bsl (british sign language) and the first christmas was the first episode that has been fully translated
• in 2015, cbn introduced a "curriculum" based on the series so that it could be used in schools, churches or in the home
• although you can't find this on the official english website or any other sb website, the indonesian website actually explains why the main trio is relevant to the series. for example, chris and joy were made to mirror what children (or people in general) go through in their lives (like grief, bullying, peer pressure, cheating or disobedience) and gizmo, albeit the fact that he's there to be comic relief, was also made to add historical, chronological and geographical information about the place that they've travelled to. plus, the scripts also have a rule that the kids and giz can't tamper with the history, culture or the biblical scenarios that take place
• back in 2006, cbn held an experiment with both children and fans of classic sb.* the experiment was based off past designs of chris, joy and gizmo. the results showed that most of the participants hated the concept designs of the trio (especially giz's) and cbn decided to change to the ones that we now know of (which was accepted by both participants). the experiment wasn't the only reason why they had design changes. while the pilot was in process and due to the scrapped 2d concepts, it was hard for the producers to look for suitable 3d studios that would take on the idea of animating the series and when they did find one, they had to change the concept designs (according to one of the production studios that cbn worked closely with)
• in other countries, the translated title for the series is "the book of books", which is a direct reference to the bible literally being a book of books
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───
*the nominations are on pages 76 and 89
*you'll find the comment where one of the producers explain the experiment

have you always written for the marauders or did you stumble into it or got inspired or ??? i’m just so curious ☺️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
story time with Lils.
I could give a simple answer to this, very short, and all, but I feel like telling the story of how I got into fanfiction so you’ll get a whole textbook instead.
It must have been like 2009 (catch me speaking like an old person), when I was laying in my grandma’s bed, fantasizing about a self insert into Harry Potter (actual Harry Potter mind you I didn’t know the Marauders, nor was my 9 year old self in love with a Sirius yet) and thinking “Gosh wish I could write that… but I can’t because copyright and it’s illegal.”
Fast forward do 2011-2012, THE FACEBOOK ERA, and your girl stumbles into a fanpage that *literally* was all about reader inserts with certain YouTubers I had an unhealthy obsession with at the time. It was then that Lilly discovered ✨the fantastic world of fanfiction✨. And it didn’t stop.
I love reading, but I had always been one to write stories, poems, songs, you name it, I probably wrote it. And so I started writing fanfics as well. First I think it must have been the YouTubers. I also remember reading a Percy Jackson fanfic once, and omg it’s been so long, I don’t even remember the webpage I read it at, but it was like it’s own little blog with its own little colors and stuff, cool shit tbh.
Must have been around 2012 that I started a fanfic of Jack Frost. Yes ladies and gentleman, Jack Frost, he was too cute for 12 y/o Lilly. That one, is absolute cringe if I go back and read it now, but also kinda funny? The reverse harem was so heavy in that one I swear I didn’t even know that was a thing but EVERYONE was inlove with the MC.
Either way, writing longer stories really wasn’t for me back then, so I started writing oneshots. And boy-oh-boy did I love them. I must say “Thank you Bucky Barnes for existing and having me obsess over you.” I must have over 30 one shots written for him. Or more, I have never counted. Some still sitting on my drafts lol.
Then I started writing for Loki and made a small follow along fic of the series, called Time Variant 30578, and I was so proud I finished it (-ish, season 2 just came up and I still have to write for that).
Not that it’s the only thing I’ve finished, I actually wrote a book, it’s a book about a serial-kiIIer, but even if we see his life, the actual unaliving parts are told from the perspective of the victims. Pretty gory, certainly something. But I liked it. That one’s done and sitting in my computer. I still want to find time to edit it and maybe publish it one day, but who knows? Off topic.
Anyway I rewatched SPN and wrote a few shots for one of the loves of my life Dean Winchester. And I have pondered on writing a series for a gender-bend spell type of thing. A short one (but actually short this time, not like GC).
And then, somewhere in between me starting a small business of HP stuff and watching Tick…Tick…Boom! (Which had me obsess over Andrew), and the already smoldering obsession with Ben, I started reading Marauders fics. Discovering the magical world of ✨Poly!Marauders✨
And then I wrote the first part of Gilded Constellations (march this year, probably) and then the second and then the first 12 parts and then I decided to post it and then people showed actual interest?!?! And I kept writing and writing and then I wanted GC to have smut. But I was shit at smut and wanted to practice so The Five Senses was born. After a LOT of research, I kid you not, so much reading fics and even YouTube tutorials lol (on writing guys, that kind of content is NOT allowed on YouTube!). Anyway, writing just solidified my obsession with my boys. And then there was Maraudween, more smut practice but also, I kind of like writing smut at this point? And scary action filled stories??? Right up my ally.
So yeah, in short; I’ve always been a writer, I have always liked Harry Potter and I have been writing fanfics for a while and just recently started writing for the Marauders, but you’re not gonna stop me any time soon.
I like living in my own head, and I love writing stories, and I adore our boys so, you’ll be seeing so much of me you’ll get sick of it lol
Did that answer your question? I feel like one of this teachers that students ask a question to and then tell the entire story of their life. But I feel like I did answer the question.

With today being the 10th anniversary of "Rio 2", here's my OC, Rio. He is my first OC to serve as the titular character. I made him sometime in early 2011 (one of my favorite years in my life, in fact), before the first "Rio" movie was released in 2011. Now, as far as his character design, I had to use 2D outlines of Blu, since Rio is supposed to be depicted as Blu's dad, making his son the next King Rio of Rio De Janeiro. I also had to look up clip art for the Brazilian crown for my character's headwear, which he later passes down to his son after Blu and Jewel's wedding and coronation ceremony.
In order to tell the difference between my character and Blu, I decided not to give Rio brown eyes. Instead, his eyes would be green. But it's possible Blu got his brown eyes from his mother, Queen Rio, depending on how she should be designed. Down below is my character's bio.
NAME
Rio
FRANCHISE
(Do I even have to say it?)
BIO
Rio is a blue spix macaw who happens to be the king of Rio. His son, Blu was born as the last of his kind. Even after losing his son, he hand-picked Jewel to live with him until they find his lost son. And after his son came back, he was able to help his son and Jewel get married.
PERSONALITY
Rio is eccentric, but well-meaning. Rio loves to sing and dance to popular licensed music, and is in fact a popular web sensation. He also has a tendency to break the fourth wall every now and then.
INSPIRATIONS
Complimenting how "Rio" and "Rio 2" used "I Like to Move It Move It", which was previously used in the "Madagascar" films by DreamWorks Animation (which ironically they would later be involved in developing "Rio 2" as part of their limited contract with 20th Century Fox), "I Like to Move It Move It" is Rio's theme song like it is for King Julien from the "Madagascar" movies.
For Rio's fourth wall abilities, I based them off of how Kuzco pauses his movies and occasionally draws on the screen with a red dry erase marker. Only, Rio doesn't draw, as instead he has a remote on him. But like Kuzco, Rio will narrate his stories off-screen and on-screen, and will poke fun at some of the characters.
Of course, this was all before I even saw the first film on opening night in 3D. As from the beginning, I depicted him as just Blu's father. Eventually, I evolved him into the character I currently have now.
OTHER APPEARANCES
Next to his own movies, I thought about giving him an appearance in "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2", as at the time, Disney was in talks to purchase 20th Century Fox, which they eventually did in early 2019. Because of this, I've made a few other OCs from different Disney/Pixar films, which I can talk about if you're interested.
But in the meantime, you can click here to learn more about my OC.

"It's So Cold in the D" turns 15 — the truth behind the accidental Detroit anthem we can't stop singing
By WWJ Newsroom
January 20, 20234:56 pm
DETROIT (WWJ) -- When it comes to Detroit artists who have made an impact on music and culture, there are truly too many to name.
But there’s one local rapper that Metro Detroiters quote regularly — especially during the winter months — who has never really gotten her due.
We’re talking about T-Baby, who had a massive viral hit 15 years ago this month with her now-iconic song, “It’s So Cold in the D.”
And if you tell us you didn’t just sing the hook as you read that — we don’t believe you.
The unbelievably catchy and quotable song was originally penned as a tribute to T-Baby’s late friend Mason Graham, who was fatally shot while trying to break up a fight at Universal Coney Island on Detroit’s east side in 2006.
The music video, was made with a shoe-string budget of just $300, hit YouTube in January of 2008, and went on to rack up an impressive 11 million views.
NOTE: VIDEO CONTAINS PROFANITY
youtube
In the years that followed, variations of the “It’s So Cold in the D” catchphrase have been included in tracks such as Eminem’s “Detroit vs. Everybody” and Big Sean’s “Story by Snoop Lion,” and the song has been performed in-concert by the likes of New Kids on the Block and Usher during tour stops in Detroit.
"It's So Cold in the D" received new life in 2011 when it was included in an episode of MTV’s “Beavis and Butthead” reboot, and the resurgence later resulted in a 2015 remix of the song (though nothing beats the original.)
NOTE: VIDEO CONTAINS PROFANITY
youtube
But even with all of its popularity, T-Baby says she received so much online hate after releasing the tribute — which she intended to be a commentary on violence in the city — she took an extended hiatus from YouTube and music to avoid the negativity.
Additionally, the rapper and artist, who grew up Latonya Myles on Detroit’s east side, has never really been given much in the way of compensation or credit for her original song.
Most artists who perform or reference it do so without permission, and despite holding a copyright on the “It’s So Cold in the D” phrase, it often appears on t-shirts, mugs and even candles with little to no money going back to T-Baby.
Though she has continued to have a social media presence and create music through the years, T-Baby says she still keeps mainly to herself, and doesn’t put a lot of trust in others.
But regardless of how people feel about the song itself, T-Baby created something that most artists have a difficult time achieving: staying power.
The song is now used on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, meaning a whole new generation is discovering the viral hit.
In another 15 years, you can bet that on a freezing winter day, Detroiters will still be turning to one another and uttering the phrase, “It’s so cold in the D.”
But if we don't start to give T-Baby the credit she deserves right now...well, there's really nothing colder than that.

okay part two anon i don’t want to publish that whole thing because i don’t want to clog up other peoples dashes but i will respond down here
i’ve already read that timeline and have done my own research and i haven’t seen anything to suggest girl at home was written before october 2011. the original poster doesn’t cite that source and while i respect their research (i noticed they have their speak now timeline up which i am very excited to read it, they’re very smart and diligent), it is a fan timeline not a direct source from taylor, and i don’t copy unsourced and unexplained fan claims into my research
on the other hand, the copyright for girl at home says it was created in 2012 and the copyright year for every other song on the original release of red is accurate, so that’s what i’ll believe until i get shown evidence otherwise
girl at home being a demo isn’t proof of her recording it before october— she was recording demos well into 2012, most famously treacherous in april 2012 (explained in both mine and your cited timeline)
i do appreciate your zac efron timeline and you effort to track down your sources for it, that was very nice of you. i’ll take down the bit about it being about his and lily’s relationship
i genuinely— i’m not being snarky i’m being honest from the bottom of my heart i just don't know how to word this without sounding rude-- i do not care about come back be here or message in a bottle's muse. in general i don’t care about paternity testing beyond how it helps with my timeline, and we already know when come back be here was written and i don’t see how the message in the bottles muse can help me figure out when it was written, unless it’s secretly about someone she met in may or something
i think i read your natural tone as combative (not your fault, totally my bad) and i don't think continuing this conversation will be in either of our best interests, but i wish you well and i appreciate your research

Napster’s launch changed music forever
Tumblr media
‘Infinite digital jukebox’ reset expectations for how tunes are consumed
Remember Napster, the online network that let you download music tracks for free?
All it did was totally change the entertainment industry.
Still, you may not recall its influence because the first version of Napster had a relatively short life.
Soon after Napster launched on June 1, 1999, the recording industry sued to have it shut down.
Over the ensuing months as Napster fought for its life in court, consumers continued to rip CDs and put tracks onto their computers and onto the file-sharing network so others could download them.
Napster grew from 20 million users in 2000 to an estimated 80 million users at its peak, The Guardian reported.
'Napster wasn’t just a file-sharing service; it was the infinite digital jukebox. And it was free,' author Stephen Witt wrote in the 2015 book 'How Music Got Free: The End of an Industry, the Turn of the Century and the Patient Zero of Piracy.'
As Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of Napster, we look back at the creation of the controversial file-sharing service, the impact it made and where the brand stands today.
Paving the way for streaming
After Napster shut down in July 2001, the company went into bankruptcy and reemerged as a subscription service in 2003 after being purchased by software maker Roxio.
Tumblr media
By then Apple had opened its iTunes Store for consumers willing to pay for tracks and albums.
Record industry attorneys were left fighting newer, harder-to-shut-down illegal networks for sharing music freely.
But none captured the zeitgeist to the extent of the original Napster, which reset consumer expectations for music – and, eventually, movies and video games.
Digital downloads and music streaming services – from Amazon Music and Apple Music to Deezer, Pandora, Spotify and Tidal – were all foreshadowed by Napster, says Ken Pohlmann, professor emeritus at the University of Miami, an electrical engineer and author of 'Principles of Digital Audio.'
Tumblr media
'The same online distribution model paved the way for the creation of video streaming' and services such as Netflix, he said.
Founding and lawsuits
Shawn Fanning began work on what would become Napster as a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston.
Tumblr media
The Napster software, when downloaded and running on a personal computer, allowed users to search through millions of M P3 song files on other people’s PCs that also had the software.
All the users could download songs from each other’s computers.
'It was something that just provided a better way … a more reliable way and fun way for people to share music and see each other’s music collection,' the Napster co-founder said in an interview with the BBC, first broadcast in 2011.
Napster got its name from Fanning’s nickname he earned as a result of his hairdo.
Tumblr media
Amid the hubbub, Fanning would wind up on the cover of Time magazine and Napster would grace Newsweek’s cover, too.
But the recording industry had a different opinion of Napster, decrying how the network allowed users to distribute music anonymously, which went beyond the typical 'fair use' of sharing copyrighted work with friends if you weren’t profiting.
'A safe haven for piracy,' is how the Recording Industry Association of America described Napster in its lawsuit alleging copyright infringement, which was filed in December 1999, as detailed in 'All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning’s Napster' by Joseph Menn.
Tumblr media
The RIAA’s suit sought $100,000 for each copyright-protected song shared over the network, or about $100 million, The Wall Street Journal reported at the time.
While some musicians supported Napster and wanted labels to embrace a subscription service, other artists were more aggressive at voicing concerns about Napster’s evils.
Among them: Rock band Metallica and record producer and rapper Dr. Dre, who filed their own copyright infringement suits soon after the RIAA filed suit on behalf of the record labels.
‘Unique opportunity in history’
A federal court disagreed with Napster’s contention that users were simply space-shifting their music, because other users could download files they didn’t own previously.
Napster paid $26million to settle separate suits filed by music publishers and songwriters, but buckled under the court’s decision in the case brought by the record labels and filed for bankruptcy in June 2002.
Meanwhile, the recording industry began suing those sharing and downloading music.
Eventually about 17,000 were sued, 'all just average individuals,' said Witt, who is also an executive producer on 'How Music Got Free,' which is based on his 2015 book.
Tumblr media
The team at Napster wanted to make a deal with the record industry, Napster co-founder Sean Parker told The New Yorker in 2014. 'Napster had been this cultural revolution, much more than it was ever a legitimate company,' he said.
'We said, ‘If you shut down Napster, it’s going to splinter, and you’re going to have a Whac-A-Mole problem on your hands, where you’re fighting service after service and you’re never going to get all those users back in one place.’ And that’s what happened,' Parker said.
USA TODAY was unable to reach Fanning and Parker for this story.
Now a subscription service
Napster is still playing tunes, but as a subscription service now, although it has only a small fraction of the subscribers of dominant competitors like Apple, Amazon, Spotify and YouTube Music.
Many still think the brand has promise.
It has changed hands several times, including being owned by Best Buy in 2008 and folded into the Rhapsody music service, which acquired it in 2011.
Tumblr media
It’s currently owned by a privately held consortium headed by Hivemind Capital, an investment firm focusing on digital media, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
Tumblr media
Hivemind acquired Napster in 2022 from virtual reality company MelodyVR.

The "Video Games" vixen tells us how she's dealing with the sudden fame and what's next for her music.
Ever since her passionate singles "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" got Lana Del Rey buzzing this past summer, music journalists have gone to great lengths to try and figure her out—with inconclusive results. Lana popped up with a DIY aesthetic, then surprised everyone when it was revealed that she has the support of a major label machine in Interscope. Some love her because her music is awesome. Some hate her because they feel she's manufactured, Trojan Horse-ing her way into the scene.
If you ask Lana to describe herself, or her purpose, she's not much help either. "I don't even have that much to say!" she proclaims over the phone, while stepping off the subway in New York. For a girl with an image that appears so deftly calculated, it's hard to tell if she's being sincere, or whether her coyness is all part of the act.
And really it's this act, her penchant for Old Hollywood cinematics, killer fashion, and dramatic tales of heartbreak, that has us mesmerized. We care about her, just as much, if not more, than her records. Where did this girl come from and why is it so fun to watch her? Lana Del Rey finally opens all the way up to Complex, from the authenticity of her much-discussed lips, to how she really feels about those Internet haters, and the sound of her upcoming debut, tentatively titled Born To Die.
You moved from Lake Placid to New York City seven years ago in search of a career in music. Now you have one. How did that happen?
Just going to open-mic nights and things like that. It was mostly in Brooklyn. It was a folk scene. When I was 19, I signed to an independent record label. I was the only act on their roster, and then that record was shelved. After that, I still wanted to sing, but I started focusing on being an active member of my community. It’s only in the last three months that I’ve had any attention.
You really came out of nowhere. Did you have a relationship with anyone at Interscope before your rise in popularity this summer?
No, I had never met anyone in that capacity. I had gone to record labels in London a year and a half ago and showed them my songs, but no one was interested. I hadn’t met any of the people that I’m signed to now. I know lots of people are wondering about the deal. [Laughs.]
Yeah, when I first heard “Video Games” in July, your record label was mentioned.
Well, I wrote that a few months ago with a composer called Justin Parker. I got a publicist a few weeks ago. I signed my deal a few weeks ago. I’ve had a very diligent manager for the last two years. In terms of assistance, I haven’t had a thing, which is OK. It’s nicer to have help.
No help with your videos? The editing is great.
No, I found and edited all of those clips myself. In the last four weeks, I’ve had to hire copyright specialists to reach out to people to ask for approval for those clips, but I found them ten months ago by searching keywords on YouTube. It’s not like the videos are that good. I’d rather them not be up, but whatever. They’re fucking weird. It’s not like I wanted the videos to look that way; it’s just what I was working with at the time. I’m not sure it’s a perfect representation of what I would have chosen if I’d had more money. [Laughs.]
Well, it’s worked out for you.
Yeah, you’d think so, but there’s definitely a backlash to it that I’m starting to see now. But it’s fine.
Anytime I talk to someone who’s facing backlash, it’s always “Whatever” or “Haters are going to hate.”
I don’t feel that way. I’m not that cool. I feel like I want to fucking kill myself. It’s miserable.
What bothers you about the criticism?
I’m just not interested. Music is secondary to me. I wish I could go back to normal. I’m a really quiet person. I always have been. It’s hard when you see a lot of things written about you. It’s not what I had in mind.
Yeah, there’s a lot of speculation about your lips.
I can tell that’s going to be a fucking problem. I didn’t sign up to be famous, I just wanted to sing. It’s so annoying, but what am I going to do?
Are your lips real?
I haven’t had anything done at all. Anyone who’s known me will tell you that. I’m sorry, but I was living in a trailer park for a few years. I didn’t even have enough money to buy Cocoa Puffs. It’s not like I crawled from under the bridge and got surgery. I’m quite pouty. [Laughs.] That’s just how I look when I sing.
How else has your life changed since your music took off?
It’s just been a lot of moving around, working with a lot of different producers trying to get the sound of the record right. I have like four songs that I think, sonically, are really good. The record’s written, but it’s not produced. I haven’t gotten to fix anything up yet. I’m still living between a million different places. But it’s nice not to be trying to survive on the street. [Laughs.] That’s good. I’m glad that I’m safe and not in any dangerous regions.
Where are these million different places?
I’ve been living in London off-and-on for the last year and a half. I started going over there to work with different producers. I never expected to end up there, but I’ve been spending a lot of time there. I go to Glasgow in Scotland and I go see my friends. That’s really fun, but there’s a lot of other things. My life hasn’t been about music for a long time now. There’s a different side of my life and I don’t really talk about it.
So, you’re 25? That’s what’s mostly out there.
Yeah, I’m 25.
When do you turn 26?
June 21st.
Who was it that broke your heart?
The songs are about two people that I couldn’t hang on to because they got in trouble and had to leave. When you’re an introvert like me and you’ve been lonely for a while, and then you find someone who understands you, you become really attached to them. It’s a real release.
I’ve seen you say things on Twitter like, “I still think about you.” Do you feel like you were supposed to be with one of them?
No. In this particular case, I know that I wasn’t supposed to be with that person, but I was still really lonely. It’s so hard to be alone. I think you know in the back of your mind when you meet someone that could be the right person. I think you know. It’s rare.
It seems like you play up your retro sex appeal intentionally.
Most of the songs are about heartbreak, but maybe the videos and the pictures have added to that perception. They are quite vamped up, aren’t they? [Laughs.] I have fun with it all, but music and taking pictures are not my end-all, be-all. They’re fun, but they’re not important to me. The most important thing, obviously, is the record. I just hope I can create that sonic world that I have in mind.
Who are you working with?
My best friend, who is a film composer in California. He’s been working with [Kanye West producer] Jeff Bhasker and [Kid Cudi producer] Emile Haynie, who are more in the hip-hop world, and we’re creating a really good thing. I don’t think it’s going to be an easy road, but for me, it’s going to be about the songs.
People have high expectations for your album. Are you feeling the pressure?
I don’t feel pressure, but I do feel nervous. I’m not used to having a lot of people hear my music. When you don’t have a lot of people listening to your music for a long time, you start making it for yourself and it takes the pressure off. I really like the record. Of course I hope people like it, because I don’t want to deal with any drama.

Not Taking Pictures of the Sistine Chapel
By Merlin and Rebecca, 26 March 2011
You can take pictures all throughout the Vatican Museums, except for inside the room that every one of the 4.5 million annual visitors are most likely there to see. I figured it wasn't allowed for security purposes. To keep the flow of traffic moving. However, it turns out that Nippon TV, a Japanese television company, funded the restoration of the chapel's frescoes in the 80s in exchange for exclusive photographic rights. Any book, postcard, print, etc wanting to depict the Sistine Chapel has to buy the copyright from Nippon TV. Talk about a good investment.
Tumblr media
Signs like this were everywhere leading up to the Sistine Chapel. Be quiet. Don't fall down the stairs. No photography. Good thing they include that second one, because if someone actually did fall down the stairs, there's no way people would be able to remain silent - or refrain from taking pictures. This picture was taken right before entering, the closest our photo memories would come to capturing the famous work. Or so we thought.
Tumblr media
We've seen a lot of rule-breaking in the Vatican. Shorts, miniskirts, flash photography in the Basilica, photography of the Papal tombs. On our tour of the Excavations beneath St. Peter's (which was absolutely amazing), photography was prohibited. Yet, the tour in front of us each took turns flashing away at the box of Peter's bones. In the Sistine Chapel, though, it was particularly egregious. Guards just sat or stood there, not saying a word.
Tumblr media
Just how lenient are the Vatican security guards? Well, just look at these people! Carla, our garden tour guide, told us that the man who attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II was put in jail only because St. Peter's Square is technically under Italian jurisdiction. Had the crime taken place under Vatican City law, he would have just been forgiven and set free. That may have been an exaggeration... but I am inclined to think it wasn't.
Tumblr media
Obviously, I decided to break the rules, too - but focused only on the tourists and not the work. It felt a little more honest that way. Plus, it's not like you need my photo to show you what one of the most famous works of art looks like. By the way, back when the pope was striking the copyright deal with Nippon TV, he apparently gave NBC a shot at it, too. They foolishly declined. How this fact hasn't popped up in an episode of 30 Rock, I'll never know.
End of article.
-
A message from nothingnothingaaa blog:
It is unclear over ten years on from the original writing of this article how lax or not these rules are now. Visit the chapel at your own risk, regarding your opportunity to photograph (or not) the famous ceiling.
As Mental Floss notes on their 2014 article:
"Yes, despite the rules that encourage quiet contemplation of the fantastic, eye-popping art that adorns nearly every inch of the walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, visitors to the chapel will find their experience peppered with terse shouts of “No photo! No video!” from security guards.
The “No photos! No video!” rule remains in place for the Sistine Chapel (though as some recent visitors can attest, its enforcement isn’t exactly strict). Given the damage that can be caused by thousands of camera flashes going off in the chapel each day, it’s no surprise that Vatican officials decided not to end the ban when Nippon’s contract expired.
After all, the chapel houses some of the greatest art in the world—and a gift shop stocked with souvenir photos."

The blessing/curse of the BiblioCommons library system is that yes, it's fun to be able to keep a record of your checkouts (even if you have to do so manually), but also makes it suuuuuuper easy to see at a glance what's been weeded, and that is never good for my heart.
Because I clearly have too much time on my hands today, as of August 2023, here is the list of what's disappeared from my checkouts of Feb. 2020-March 2022 (when I lost my card/switched to using husband's so I wouldn't have to memorize a new number for Libby, and didn't want to clutter his account with my records) (I do have my own card back now, fyi):
listed in no particular order; year given is the edition's publication year, which is often the same as copyright year but sometimes more recent
Fiction
The Map of Lost Memories - Kim Fay (2012) -- was still on my TBR 👿
The Visitors - Simon Sylvester (2015)
The Swiss Affair - Emylia Hall (2014)
The Dragon Book - various (2009) -- collection of short stories; I'm pissed about this one because it includes a Tamora Pierce story about Daine/Numair/Kitten
YA
The Rules - Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguié (2015)
Bitter End - Jennifer Brown (2011)
Lucky T - Kate Brian (2007) -- tbh it was a miracle that one lasted as long as it did and I know it (never did get around to reading it though)
The Traitor Game - B.R. Collins (2008)
Juvenile Books
The Meaning of Maggie - Megan Jean Sovern (2014)
The Forest Has Eyes - Bev Doolittle (1998) -- dammit, coolest picture book
Letters to Seabiscuit (2003)
Nonfiction
Life at Home in the 21st Century: 32 Families Open Their Doors - Jeanne E. Arnold (2012) -- unsurprising because chunky coffee table book, but man it was cool and fun to look at
Cats in the Belfry - Doreen Tovey (2008)
Roses Round the Door - Doreen Tovey (1982 -- or so the record says but I think it was a bit more recent, maybe also a 2000s edition)
Audiobook on CD
Fish in a Tree - Lynda Mullaly Hunt (2015)
Home in Carolina - Sherryl Woods (2010)
DVD
Childhood's End
TAKEAWAY:
So it's actually not as bad as I thought it might be; this represents only 8% of what I checked out in that time period...but we'll see how it compares the longer I track this stuff.
That said, for all the final-weeds I have managed to get lucky with finding, including some books I really loved, I did not see a single one of these on a sale cart / in a library sale, which is annoying because there are only a few of these that I wouldn't have snapped up. Book fairies! I can't really complain because you do still tip a lot of treasure into my path, but also, COME ON.

Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit
The world is full of people who played for years but cannot hear 5 notes and play them back without first fumbling around for a while. all these things are fine, but they don't really develop your ear as thoroughly and directly as you want and need. Practicing scales, trying to copy songs by ear, music theory, etc. The truth is that yes, you can dramatically develop your ear and your playing skills to a dramatically higher level, but you need to do three things: I wasn't born with a Mozart brain, but there must be a way to learn! How can I learn? HOW? I want to be able to play anything I want, anything I hear or think, naturally and effortlessly, without mistakes and hesitations. In fact, do you ever get angry about it? Do you ever think like. If you play any instrument and you want to improve, you probably appreciate how useful – and how enjoyable – such a skill would be! and then play it back without mistakes – right on the first try? Would you like to be like that? Would you like to be able to listen to a melody, lick, bass line, etc. In other words, would you like to be a play-by-ear master?
