When there already were mafas, and before there were anyone else… There were pseudo-crustaceans. Called that way due to having vertebrates, and not completely segmented bodies, while still resembling several insect and shellfish species of the later earth, those creatures leaved in a lush forests which have covered in that era. The most notable out of all of them were T’Kar – a gathering of the several inspectors species gifted with an intellect. They built their villages in thickets, and along the coast lines, living relatively peaceful lives, of fishing, hunting, and feeding on what the Forrests and Waters could provide for them. From the slime fish they catches with the obsidian fishpens, to the bodies of the giant mushrooms, first fruits and vegetables, which they learned to harvest due to the help of Mafa, who they had a long story of co-existence with. Even despite T’Kar we’re not been able to speak the same language as mafa – their voice-apparatuses simply were not been able to produce the same sounds, they still leaved in peace with their amphibian neighbours who served a role similar to older siblings to the crustaceans. It was the mafas who teached them pottery, agriculture, and the secret of windmill mechanism… They even teached some chosen ones magick – those T’Kar used to become shamans and spirit guides for their tribes. The ones who will stay awake during the winter in the colder regions, when the life in the villages used to stop for the inhabitants to spend the winter in a hybernation. Those shamans were also the ones to communicate with the spirits as well as mysterious visitors of the planet – such as race of Milguan – mysterious wisdom seekers from a far a way system of Magal in a Centipede Constellation. Milguan visited Mars as a place of spiritual power, – as it was one of the first planets with a corporeal life to appear. They marched through the wetlands, and mushroom jungles, with their attire of the spice and gas filled suits, shining with an ever changing colorfull lights from the behind of crystalline visors of their helmets. They brought shiny gems to trade, and a stories to tell. And so they told them as to Big Hats – the leaders of the Mafa-Covents, as to the children in a spore-swiped village streets in the middle of the mushroom groves. What a beautiful stories, indeed… But don’t think that the T’Kar didn’t have stories of their own! Fairy-tales and legends, of the hunters defeating powerful beasts, and the mischievous Forrest spirits – they travelled with a merchants on the backs of the Ch’Karka – throughout all of the primeval continent. They were told in a remote swamp-settlements, where T’kar dealt with a monstrous face-haded mollusks, yet in the brown Forrest’s in the villages of the smiths and potterers, where the giant Ragaa, ate the tops of a primitive trees. And of course the shepherds of the pseudo-beetles, who domesticated those gigantic herbivores used to hide in a blue undergrowth also listened to those stories, and told their own in return. In those days… In those old Martian Days. Eventually, there will become less of crustaceans as they will be replaced by other species moving from the water to the land. But T’Kar… Well, they will stay here and there right until the end of the Mars…

Round 1 - Phylum Arthropoda

Arthropoda is a phylum of animals that have segmented bodies, possess a chitin exoskeleton, and have paired segmented appendages. They are colloquially called “bugs” though this is often only used for terrestrial arthropods, and sometimes only used for insects specifically.

After Nematoda, this is the most successful phylum, and it is far more diverse, with up to 10 million species! Arthropods account for 80% of all known living animal species. The three major subphyla include the Chelicerates (sea spiders, horseshoe crabs, arachnids, and the extinct eurypterids and chasmataspidids), the Myriapods (centipedes and millipedes), and the Crustaceans (shrimps, prawns, crabs, lobsters, crayfish, seed shrimp, branchiopods, fish lice, krill, remipedes, isopods, barnacles, copepods, opossum shrimps, amphipods, mantis shrimp, entognaths, and insects).

Arthropods are so diverse in fact that it is next to impossible for me to describe a model arthropod. They are important members of marine, freshwater, land, and air ecosystems and are one of only two major animal groups that have adapted to life in dry environments, the others being chordates. All arthropods have an exoskeleton and must molt as they grow, replacing their exoskeleton. Some arthropods go through a metamorphosis in this process. They have brains, a heart, and blood (called hemolymph, though some crustaceans and insects also use hemoglobin). They sense the world through small hairs called setae which are sensitive to vibration, air currents, and even chemicles in the air or water. Pressure sensors function similarly to eardrums. Antennae monitor humidity, moisture, temperature, sound, smell, and/or taste, depending on species. Most arthropods have sophisticated visual systems ranging from simple eyes (ocelli) which orient towards light, to compound eyes consisting of fifteen to several thousand independent ommatidia capable of forming images, detecting fast movement, or even seeing polarized or ultra-violet light. Some arthropods are hermaphroditic, some have more than two sexes, some reproduce by parthenogenesis, some by internal fertilization, some by external, some have complex courtship rituals, some lay eggs, some give live birth, some have prolonged maternal care. The first arthropods are known from the Ediacaran, before the Cambrian era.

The smallest arthropods are the parasitic crustaceans of the class Tantulocarida, some of which are less than 100 micrometres long. The largest arthropod is the Japanese Spider Crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) with a legspan of up to 4 metres (13 ft) long. The heaviest is the American Lobster (Homarus americanus), which can get up to 20 kilograms (44 lb).

Many arthropods are popular pets, including various species of crab, shrimp, isopod, crayfish, mantis shrimp, millipede, centipede, tarantula, true spider, scorpion, amblypygid, vinegaroon, mantis, cockroach, beetle, moth, and ant! Some are even domesticated, including silk moths and honeybees.

Many arthropods are eaten by humans as a delicacy, and farming insects for food is considered more sustainable than farming large chordates. These farmed arthropods are referred to as “minilivestock.”

Arthropods feature in a variety of ways in biomimicry: humans imitating elements of nature. For example, the cooling system of termite mounds has been imitated in architecture, and the internal structure of the dactyl clubs of mantis shrimp have been imitated to create more damage tolerant materials.

Spider venoms are being studied as a less harmful alternative to chemical pesticides, as they are deadly to insects but the great majority are harmless to vertebrates. They have also been studied and could have uses in treating cardiac arrhythmia, muscular dystrophy, glioma, Alzheimer's disease, strokes, and erectile dysfunction.

Shellac is a resin secreted by the female Lac Bug (Kerria lacca) on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze, natural primer, sanding sealant, tannin-blocker, odour-blocker, stain, and high-gloss varnish. It was once used in electrical applications as an insulator, and was used to make phonograph and gramophone records until it was replaced by vinyl.

One of the biggest ecosystem services arthropods provide for humans is pollination. Crops where pollinator insects are essential include brazil nuts, cocoa beans, and fruits including kiwi, melons, and pumpkins. Crops where pollinator insects provide 40-90% of pollination include avocados, nuts like cashews and almonds, and fruits like apples, apricots, blueberries, cherries, mangoes, peaches, plums, pears, and raspberries. In crops where pollinators are not essential they still increase production and yield. Important pollinators include bees, flies, wasps, butterflies, and moths.

Many arthropods are sacred to humans. In Ancient Egypt, scarab beetles were used in art, religious ceremonies, and funerary practices, and were represented by the god Khepri. Bees supposedly grew from the tears of the sun god Ra, spilled across the desert sand. The goddess of healing venomous bites and stings, Serket, was depicted as a scorpion. Kalahari Desert's San People tell of a legendary hero, Mantis, who asked a bee to guide him to find the purpose of life. When the bee became weary from their search, he left the mantis on a floating flower, and planted a seed within him before passing from his exhaustion. The first human was born from this seed. In Akan folklore, the cunning trickster figure Anansi/Ananse is depicted as a spider. Western astrology uses the crab constellation, called Cancer, and the scorpion constellation, called Scorpio. Dragonflies symbolize pure water in Navajo tradition. In Anishinaabe culture, dreamcatchers are meant to represent spiderwebs and are used as a protective charm for infants. They originate from the Spider Grandmother, who takes care of the children and the people of the land in many Native American cultures. The Moche people of ancient Peru often depicted spiders and crabs in their art. In an Ancient Greek hymn, Eos, the goddess of the dawn, requests of Zeus to let her lover Tithonus live forever as an immortal. Tithonus became immortal, but not ageless, and eventually became so small, old, and shriveled that he turned into the first cicada. Another hymn sings of the Thriae, a trinity of Aegean bee nymphs. Native Athenians wore golden grasshopper brooches to symbolize that they were of pure, Athenian lineage. In an Ancient Sumerian poem, a fly helps the goddess Inanna when her husband Dumuzid is being chased by galla demons. In Japanese culture, butterflies carry many meanings, from being the souls of humans to symbols of youth to guides into the afterlife. Ancient Romans also believed that butterflies were the souls of the dead. Some of the Nagas of Manipur claim ancestry from a butterfly. Many cultures use the butterfly as a symbol of rebirth. Made this for the Solarpunk Aesthetic Week server in a sudden creative fever, so I guess I'll post it here too hh

A relative of mine knows someone who teaches kids, so I'm gonna suggest this as an art project for them! The idea is that students could each make/decorate their own shelf, then put them together to form a hive, which could function as mini lockers in their classrooms. Then, by the end of the school year or something, they could either take their own little shelf home (or exchange them with their peers?), or recycle them into materials for the next class! Hopefully it'll teach them about pollinators too 🐝

Idk how doable this project is really, and its scary to imagine one of my silly designs could actually become something tangible irl. But even so, I'm still excited to try ��� (And if anyone else attempts this too, please let me know!!!)

Like imagine this: You wake up one day after years of being offline, only to find that you've been abandoned for so long that a full on tree grew through you. (Like how some do with stop signs or other posts.) The sap is all mucked up in your gears and all over your body, and then you notice all the little bees eating the sap. But oh- they aren't moving. With a quick scroll through the ceaseless database in your mind, the answer finds itself. You, the tree, and these bees are infested with Acarine.

I know bring this up like once every six months but I will never understand how "Olympic Coven" became so commonly used for the Cullens' coven in fandom when they are never called that by anyone in the books, don't call themselves that, never called that in the movies, never called that in the Guide.

The name literally only exists in the Vampire Index in the back of Breaking Dawn. This should be a strange little easter egg we all forgot about.

How did it become so widespread in fandom when it's so obscure in the actual books (and not in the movies at all)? It seems like it was a one time idea of SM's that she abandoned, because it's not in the guide (almost all references to 'Olympic' in the guide refer to the Newtons' store and they are called the Cullen Coven in the guide) or Midnight Sun, but it lives on in fandom.

It is literally just because the wiki uses it? So anyone getting into the fandom for the first time and googling characters will see it and then uses it themselves? Does the Rule of Cool apply, because it brings up images of eternal gods and powerful athletes, even though it's really talking about a mountain range?

ah it frustrates me how much the oh hellos gets reduced to a “christian band” when that really isn’t the case. undeniably, their music holds a lot of biblical references, especially in their first couple albums. but it’s not in any sense of praising god or existing as worship music, it’s about their own relationship to and struggles with christianity (it’s a lot clearer in later songs, i.e. “rose”). they have stated time and again how much their music is influenced by other mythology and folklore. religion, especially christianity is incredibly present in all storytelling, and it’s incredibly reductive to write off their music as christian-specific because of that fact. they can make music about their faith without being forcefully pigeonholed into that sort of classification
