I think I’m on Shima’s side

After reading chapter 62, I’m starting to think that Mukai scolding Shima with regards to Mika is unjustified.

The things is, Shima was very clear in his rejection of Mika. He was kind, but clear. So I don’t think it’s fair to say that he should have to walk on eggshells around her just to spare her feelings. He shouldn’t have to worry about people looking for double meanings in his words. Him saying no once should be enough.

And Mika was his friend before she confessed, so it’s not unreasonable of him to invite her to his field trip group. If she was hurt from the rejection and needed space, that’s something she should’ve clarified to Shima— because otherwise, yeah, how is he supposed to know? Or she could’ve just rejected his offer herself. Mukai thinks Shima was callous in asking her, but he wasn’t. Shima was just trusting that his friend *respected his rejection* and took it at face value.

But you know who Shima hasn’t rejected outright, who he’s been dancing around for a while now? Mitsumi!!

Mukai’s and even Mika’s worry about Shima’s impulsivity and thoughtlessness about other people feelings apply way more to his and Mitsumi’s relationship than his and Mika’s (which is something I think Mika realizes more than Mukai). Shima knows— or knew, at least— that Mitsumi likes/liked him. And he went along with their breakup but he never really gave his own input. He was never clear with what he wanted with Mitsumi the way he was with Mika.

But now, he’s asked her on a sort-of date in Kyoto. Mitsumi herself doesn’t even know what to call it because he hasn’t made it clear at all!

So I think during Kyoto, if he still doesn’t make up his mind about what Mitsumi means to him and what exactly he meant by asking her out, it’s going to crush her, and he will have to face the fact that his impulsive & avoidant characteristics hurt others (Mitsumi).

Or!! He’ll finally get his head out of his ass and be brave enough to say he likes her with his whole chest. We shall see.
