Hello hello, to all interested participants in The Light at the End! This will be a Fan Zine dedicated to Arkane Austin, in celebration of Dishonored, Prey, & Redfall. There's one week left to apply to participate! Link to apply is here.

Our projected timeline is as follows:

June 28th - Applications Close (11:59pm EST) June 29th-July 1st - Participants Chosen, Acceptances Sent July 31st - First Check-In (Sketches, Drafts, relevant progress check) August 31st - Second Check-In (Mostly-completed work so the zine can be arranged) September 30th - Finished Pieces Due October 31st - Release Day!

One question we've gotten a lot is regarding Dishonored, so to clear it up here, this project will focus on the first game in the series only (Dishonored 2012 and its DLC). The Austin and Lyon teams collaborated on the whole series, but the spirit of this zine is more about the Austin team and their foundational work <3

Sooo, I’ve been watching esport type event streams for Excel (shut up, yes I’m a huge nerd) and I had a crazy idea…

Would you guys be interested in a livestream writing event? Maybe we could gather prompts then we have a 15 minute sprint to write something for it? Sharing our screen as we write, so people can watch the creative process live as it unfolds? Or maybe doesn’t? Just a blinking cursor 😬

Would anyone actually be interested in such a thing? Either as a viewer or an a contributor?

I’m NOT envisioning it at a competition, more of a communal experience. I don’t know. This is probably a spectacularly bad idea 👀 I likely just need sleep and to crack on with my WIPs lolol 😣😂🧡🧡

Just checked out your Ken Penders myths post. You think after learning all this stuff about how some stuff is misunderstood or exaggerated about him that you might have a more softened view of him than you might have had previously? Maybe even think that his large hatedom is misplaced? Seeing all that makes me feel less mad since it looks like he didnt go out of his way to fuck Archie or anything.

i definitely think the hatedom around penders is exaggerated, yeah. some of the shit people will say about him is wild, and i've tried (in vain) to correct people where i can. people get the facts of the lawsuits wildly incorrect and make it sound like archie never did anything wrong. people also take all sorts of shit out of context to try and paint him as a Literal Actual Child Predator for wanting to write typical dumb teen soap opera drama with sonic characters. people are just always frothing at the mouth looking for any excuse to dunk on him

that being said, i still think he's a weird asshole who never misses a chance to rile up reactionary nerd hate campaigns against any other sonic comic contributors he's perceived as being against him, particularly ian flynn. and also he still does shit like tracing the work of other artists, or threatening legal action because the sonic movies depicted knuckles as having a dad, which is an idea he thinks he owns. so some of his negative public image is definitely deserved. but i also have to pity the guy

Henry's royal house is 'Hanover-Stuart' - implying he comes from the House of Hanover

but the last Hanover monarch was Queen Victoria. Her children inherited their father (her cousin's) house- Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. After that the British line of Hanover effectively ended

So the persistence of the name then implies that in the Red White and Royal Blue universe, Queen Victoria - who we know exists as a Queen in universe because of the food fight joke- was either succeed by a much more distantly related Hanover- implying her children either didn't exist or were somehow removed from the line of succession (hello new fictional civil war of 1901), OR it implies that Queen Victoria somehow, in 1840- changed the entire system of patralineage into a matralineage so her children would inherit the Hanover title. This would then in turn imply that the female line would have to be acknowledged as the stronger claimant to the throne meaning the heir to Victoria's throne would NOT have been Edward VII, but instead Victoria's first born- a daughter also called Victoria (hereafter referred to as V2 for clarity).

But in real life V2 went on to become the empress of Germany and the mother of the last German Kaiser - you know the one who was CREEPILY almost incestuously obsessed with his mothers hands and who ALSO LARGELY CAUSED WW1 BY MAKING 1910s GERMANY AN EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE MILITARY POWER TO RESOLVE IS DADDY ISSUES?! But if in RW&RB V2 never became the German Empress, she never would have had Wilhelm II, and would instead have married a man of lower station and went on to continue the Hanover line in England, meaning there would be no Willhelm II - whos infamously erratic and hostile foreign policy led to the destabilization of Germany's position in Europe and was likely the main contributor to the reactionary foreign policies of other European powers that then caused the beginning of the conflict that became WW1.

SO IN RW&RB, IS THERE NO WW1?!

and that's not even getting into the Stuart of it all - a Royal line that ended IN 1714 AND WAS THE WHOLE SOURCE OF THE JACOBITE UPRISINGS. like if the Stuart line continued in the name, that implies that instead of it dying out with Anne, and the distant relatives of James II then forming the Jacobites to reclaim the throne, they somehow wove them back into the family tree?!

So were there no Jacobite Uprisings in RW&RB?

Is that why Henry is able to be styled as Prince of Wales, despite him not being the Crown Prince- because in this universe with the Stuarts still part of the royal family the Crown Prince's seat now becomes Prince of Scotland, also implying that Scotland has also now become a principality rather than a kingdom?! And how did the Stuart line stay in? Did Victoria NOT marry Albert, but instead marry a Stuart? But no, because the last Stuart was literally a fatherless priest who died 20 years before she was born, and the V&A still exists in universe, so Victoria still definitely married Albert. So did V2 get married off to some distant Stuart (most likely Francis V of Modena)? IS SCOTLAND A PRINCIPALITY NOW?! WHO CAUSED WW1?! WAS IT BECAUSE OF THE FICTIONAL BRITISH CIVIL WAR OF 1901?!

How is the English version of Twisted Wonderland Different? (Cater)

In Cater's labwear vignette he explains that he has "make it cute" burned into his brain due to the influence of his overbearing older sisters. 

One of the ways this manifests is how he is often describing the people and things around him as "cute." 

This character trait comes up on both servers, but not as often in the English-language adaptation where it is sometimes rewritten or removed.

Cater is portrayed as something as a flirt from early on in Book 1 when Trey has to tell him to calm down.

This trait carries over into a vignette where Cater talks about how Epel must have a beautiful older sister ("If not, he always has a mother"), which was removed from EN.

Also removed from the English-language adaptation of the game was Cater's line about wanting to date Vil, and Vil responding that he is too expensive for Cater to afford.

Original Cater: For a moment there I think I even wanted to date you ♪

EN Cater: Is this even real? Am I dreaming?

Original Vil: Yes, yes. That's a lot more expensive than the cost of a single photo, so prepare yourself.

EN Vil: Yes, yes. You should feel lucky there is no price for dreaming of me.

Original Cater: Don't I know it. I bet there is a lot of time and money involved in preparing even a single gift when you're dating Vil-kun.

EN Cater: Don't I know it.

Original VIl: If you're not prepared for that, then stop with being ridiculous and take your seat.

EN Vil: And since you could never hope to afford taking a photograph with me, stop with your jokes and take your seat.

English-language-Cater can be rather curt with Trey, calling him a nerd and telling him to stop nagging, but these are both lines that don't exist in his original dialogue and were invented for the English-speaking audience. 

While he does call Trey a “demon vice housewarden” and a “black-hearted brute” in the original game, he does not tell Trey that he is “no better than Riddle,” which was an addition to his English-language dialogue.

Cater expressing concern for a post-blot Riddle in Book 2 was changed to "Don't be a hero, man!" on EN.

Cater reprimands Trey in Book 1 for hiding the fact that he had independently discovered Cater's dislike of sweet food, as Trey hiding his thoughts was such a big contributor to Riddle's overblot.

On EN this was changed to Cater reprimanding himself, instead.

Honorable Mention: Cater's siblings changing from two older sisters to zero.

This has since been corrected on EN.

What the English-language game has changed to “teeth,” was originally "yaeba," which means, “snaggle tooth.”

It is mentioned in the game guide that “Cater is a yaeba character,” which is why it might sometimes look like he has a fang.

There is a lot of room for misunderstanding in a game where fanged characters tend to label someone as fae or a beast-person, and I have been asked before if there is secret JP-server information where we learn that Cater isn’t human, be cause of card art where he seems to have fanged teeth. But he doesn’t!

That is possibly why this line is here (in the original game): in order to clear up that misunderstanding.

In an EN-server dorm uniform homescreen line, Cater says “I should start wearing our dorm uniform”.

This is the opposite of what he is actually saying, which is that the player is the one who should wear the uniform. While it might have been intentional, it is also a pretty easy mistake to make.

This is because, most of the time in Japanese, we don’t use subject pronouns at all.

Here is a breakdown of what Cater is literally saying:

There is no “I’ or “you” at all―this is very common in Japanese. Everything is communicated through context.

So how do we know that the English translation changed the subject pronoun if there isn’t one to change?

Because of the the verb form! He is specifically saying “着てみる?” (kite-miru) as in “try wearing something never worn before, for the first time?” The form of the verb “みる” being posed as a question, in particular, is what tells us that this about the person he’s speaking to rather than himself.

This verb flexibility is a large part of why pronouns and subjects often get dropped from natural conversation, for being unnecessary.

There is also “かも”(kamo), for maybe/possibly/etc, which is the last word after “look good” in the second sentence of his actual line but was moved to the start of his first sentence on EN.

The same words have been put in a different order, completely changing the meaning.

(“kamo” in this context is the short, informal form of “kamoshirenai”, which itself is the less short, informal form of “kamoshiremasen”, for the curious ♪ (it also means ‘duck’. How do we know Cater isn’t talking about ducks? Context!))
