ᓂᑐᐦᑕᒧᐏᐣ nitohtamowin, the act of listening (red breasted merganser)
2024
hand quilted scrap fabric and seed beads
as i worked on this piece at my home on the colonially occupied land of my native ancestors i thought about the words of palestinian poet marwan makhoul;
In order for me to write poetry that isn’t political
I must listen to the birds
and in order to hear the birds
the warplanes must be silent.
the colonizing genocidal power that continues to lay waste to my people, keeping us poor, unhoused, and sick is the one of the powers contributing to the genocide of palestinians. Indigenous liberation is intertwined globally, land back for me means land back for us all.
Métis (Otipemisiwak) demand a free Palestine.

fascinating to watch how hozier speaking Irish in his new music is making some people: 1. fetishise him further and/or 2. make 'fun' jokes about gaeilge/gaelic/'''garlic'''' bc like. babes. i can guarantee you neither of those actions are separable from the lingering impacts of colonialism.

In addition to ppl misconstruing what Indigeneity is, they're also doing the same with "colonialism". "White people are Indigenous to America if they were born there so they can't be colonizers", "zionists can't be colonizers because they're returning to their homeland" i don't think you know what colonialism is or how it works.

Selected works of Firelei Báez (b. 1981, Dominican-American) as seen at an exhibition of her work at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art. Her work explores colonialism, female power, folklore and myth, struggle and renewal. She often paints overtop historical source documents like maps and architectural plans. From top to bottom:
1. Tone tonal time (or an economy of care), 2024
2. Untitled (Terra Nova), 2020
3. Untitled (Temple of Time), 2020
4. Madeleine (rupture rapture maroonage), 2022

I'm not saying that the US' "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" attitude started because of false advertising by the London Company and John Smith, but also it definitely started because of false advertising by the London Company and John Smith.

But it was partly from colonial adventure stories like Mary’s that science fiction was born. From the beginning, science fiction drew on Westerns and exploration stories. [...] Even now, much of science fiction is about travel and hardship, technology and “magic,” contact with the alien, outposts on the frontier. The first time Alice saw Star Trek, she recognized it at once as a story about her childhood. But science fiction also has the power to rewrite the colonial narrative. It can acknowledge and even celebrate cultural confusion, bring human and alien together, change the intentions and the endings.

I/we live in a society where every week is critical, a society where crisis is chronic, a society that makes crisis chronic. Confronting this harsh reality is often too hard for me to endure. Walter Benjamin provided some comfort on this point when he wrote, `the state of emergency is not the exception but the rule’.
I am dreaming of the days when I will be able to manage my own time and space, when I will be more imaginative and caring. I wanted to open up a new space of reflection that breaks away from the closed circuit in which a sterile language is merely reproduced over and over again. I wanted to write a more dialogical text than this. Indeed, I want to know who are the time managers that make my life so hectic.

thinking about how people don't understand the purpose of the Abject in tender is the flesh. yes it is disgusting it is grotesque the protagonist is complicit on a mass scale level in violence that's the POINT it is thematically about systematic violence and the human role in it. you don't have to like it, in fact you can hate it it's a personal literary preference but I'm begging people to understand that.
