Soul Society Tattoo Artist AU Meta That No One Asked For: Who Killed Kaien Shiba?

So, you may have noticed Kuukaku and Ganju making an appearance in my most recent Soul Society Tattoo Artist AU comic. That was pretty much planned from the beginning, along with the next one, where they end up doing Renji a pretty significant solid, which got me thinking, how did Kaien’s death play out in this universe, and what role did (or didn’t) Rukia play in it?

See, the fanfic part of this AU (which I know you haven’t seen yet, I’m working on it) opens with Rukia trying to get a dirtbaggy tattoo to piss off Byakuya. Unlike canon Rukia, who entered the Academy barely literate and scrabbling to figure out social norms, this Rukia was adopted by Byakuya as a child, and raised with all the personal attention and high expectations that Byakuya would have given to the younger sibling he never had. Rukia is basically the star of the Academy, and Byakuya already has her twenty year plan to Squad Six vice-captain all mapped out. Except... Rukia’s doesn’t sit comfortably in her nobility. She doesn’t want to uphold the honor of Soul Society and drink fancy wine, she wants to protect people and do good. Mostly, she wants to join Squad 5 with her friends (lolololololol). 

Meeting Renji is a seismic shift for her-- she’s never met another person who questioned their own duty to society as much as she has, and through her association with him, she comes to realize that just because she doesn’t like her privilege doesn’t mean she should try to discard it. So, she ends up joining Squad 6 after all, with the goal of bringing a sense of social consciousness to the elites of the Gotei. 

I had all of this figured out, pretty much off the bat, but it raised a couple of questions, namely 1) how does Rukia end up on the Living World mission where she meets Ichigo, and 2) who went with Ukitake to witness Kaien losing his fight with Metastacia? What if, I said to myself, what if the answer to #2 was...no one. Ukitake is an immensely strong and ancient captain, and I think that he could have taken Kaien/Metastacia down, but at great cost to his health. 

This entire incident is an enormous blow for Squad 13. They’ve lost their Lieutenant and Third Seat, as well as the entire unit that was slaughtered by Metastacia (it’s unclear how many people this represents, but in the anime Metastacia-possessing-Miyako goes through the squad a murders a significant number of people as well). Their captain is effectively disabled for who-knows-how-long. There is hushed talk that Ukitake is going to be replaced (but by who??) or Squad 13 possibly even disbanded. The squad is roundly seen as bad luck, and people are filing transfer requests right and left.

I’ve always headcanoned Ukitake as a family friend of the Kuchiki, and I can especially see him and Hisana getting along. I think Byakuya would have been friendlier with Kaien and Miyako as well (I always make Byakuya 1000% more friendly with everyone in AUs where his wife doesn’t die...which still basically only brings him up to “will tolerate their presence at dinner parties” but anything is an improvement) and I think Rukia may still have done a bit of training with Kaien, since elemental swords run in the Shiba family.  

Rukia, who at this point is Third Seat at the Sixth, and basically shadowing Shirogane in the interest of replacing him, decides she can’t allow this to stand, and begs Byakuya to allow her to transfer to the 13th in order to help hold things together until Ukitake can get back on his feet. More than anything else, this has huge symbolic value: the Kuchiki princess and Byakuya’s personal protégé, delaying her own vice-captain’s exam to go do the paperwork of three people at a squad that’s in shambles, because that’s how important she thinks Captain Ukitake is. 

It works, it stops the hemorrhaging. Byakuya doesn’t like it, but he and Rukia have come to an understanding that her continued role as stand-in Kuchiki heir hinges on him respecting the things she feels she needs to do. She also ends up taking quarters at the Thirteen, which allows her to get some degree of freedom and also allows her the chance to surreptitiously spend some time in Rukongai with Renji, which is good, because she’s so busy now that she’d hardly get to see him otherwise. (Renji, for his part, is extremely proud and supportive of her choice)

When the comics part of the story picks up, Ukitake is doing much better. Rukia has passed her vice-captain’s exam and is on the cusp of transferring back to the Sixth. Ukitake wishes like Hell he could keep her, but he knows Byakuya has been patient enough. Just for old times, he decides to send Rukia on one last deployment, just a few weeks in the World of the Living, since that’s a thing she’s not likely to get to do once she’s an assistant captain. After all, what could go wrong?

You didn't know you could be this compliant. You didn't. But Light did.

As you both layed in bed, naked, Light holding you to his chest, rubbing soothing circles on your belly, you both had different train of thoughts that were ultimately going to reach the same station. You were thinking about how you had become so... docile? Had you been in confinement for too long? Was Stockholm syndrome kicking in? Was it because of the guilt of not being able to stop him? Or was it because Light killed everyone you cared about?

You had tried to play his psychological games. But you lost. You had managed to get a hold of the Deathnote, and you were going to write his name in but he caught you and broke your fingers. You then tried to play along; you came up with a good system for who to kill. You would do extensive research on each person, serving both purposes: to see if the person truly deserved death and to slow Light down. But you later found out that your efforts didn't matter. He was killing people on a whim and he was having someone else do it for him. Misa Amane. She was quite famous. And pretty too. You didn't know why Light would use you for intimacy, both in and out of bed, when he already had a willing participant.

For every mistake you made, no matter how little, Light would punish you by killing people you were even remotely associated with. Your family, friends, everyone was dead. And judging by the content look on his face, L was going to die soon too. Hopelessness. Maybe that's why you have become like this.

"I love you." Light said, pressing a kiss to your temple as he snuggled you more. "You're so beautiful like this." You really were, in his eyes. Now that you don't fight him anymore, now that you understood that you belong to him, you're beautiful. Light liked you being so... submissive. But more than that, he loved the look of complete defeat in your eyes, the realisation that you only have him in this world now. No ones going to come for you. No one could; only he and Misa knew about you.

"What's next?"you managed to ask him. Whats next on his list of impending doom? He hummed, before replying, "Well, soon all obstacles in my way are going to be removed. Once that happens, I'll become the ruler of the world. And then, I'll get rid of all the filth in this world." You closed your eyes, asking "how? Do you have a new system of justice in mind?" Light gripped your chin, turning your head towards him. "I am the system, (Y/n). I am justice." You saw that crazy look in his eyes. You sighed, turning away from him, but Light suddenly flipped you over, straddling your waist as he leaned down. His hair tickling your face as he looked at you with possessiveness. "Dont look so gloomy, darling. I know you feel lonely when I'm not here, but soon you'll have a baby to keep you company." He said before kissing you passionately, biting your lips hard before getting off of you. "For now, Misa will keep you entertained." He chuckled before putting the cuff back on your ankle, and left the room.

Misa. When you first met her, you knew she didn't like you. She thought that you were trying to steal Light from him, that you were actually in love with him. She tried to attack you at first, but Light had pulled her out of the room and told her that he actually loved her and that you were just a part of the plan, a temporary plaything. And so Misa put up with you. Light would usually put her in charge of you; he had caught you trying to stab yourself with a nail filer after he had slept with you the first time. And now that you were carrying his child, he had to make sure you wouldn't do anything like that again.

Misa came in a few hours later, locking the door behind her like usual. "Hey, (Y/n)!"she chirped, as she skipped towards you. "I brought some stuff for you!"she told you as she dangled big shopping bag. "Hi, Misa. Whats in that?"you asked her, your voice monotonous. She put the bag down and started to uncuff your ankle. "You'll see! But first, let's take a bath." She helped you clean up yourself and the room. Once she was done, she sat you down on the bed and gave you the bag. You opened the bag to find clothes in it. Maternity clothes. You had barely started to show. You were a bit glad that you hadn’t started showing, because anything associated with the baby would make you remember the events that caused it. When you first realised that you were pregnant, you tried everything you could to get rid of it. You didn't want to give him another thing to hold over your head. But once Light found out, he became even worse somehow. He was glad he was having a child; and now he had to do everything to make the world fit for his offspring. He started handing out harsher deaths, killing off people who rubbed him off the wrong way. To you, he stopped being physically violent. But he did become more possessive of you. He wanted to know what you were doing, why you were doing it. He wanted to know if you had fallen in love with him; if you had finally decided to become his lapdog.

When Misa came to know about your pregnancy, she was angry. Not at Light, but at you. But Light manipulated her again. He told her that he didn't want her to have a kid because her body would get messed up. And he needed her as his right hand, and being pregnant would get in the way of that. Once the baby was here, they would raise it together, as if you were a surrogate. Misa bought it.

You knew Misa wasn't stupid. She was actually quite intelligent. You actually enjoyed her company. After Light would do his number on you, it would be Misa who would come to pick up the pieces. She would be the one to wipe your tears away and bandage you up.

You had tried to convince her to let you go, tried to even fight her. But she was too observant. She predicted your moves. She always knew when you were planning something. She saw right through you.

You thanked Misa for the maternity clothes. She had ordered you guys some food, your favourite. As you began eating, Misa looked at your belly, with adoration and envy? "Penny for your thoughts?"your voice brought her of her trance. "Oh! It's nothing. Just thinking about how much Light would love the baby. I cant wait for it to come!" She smiled. You looked at her, shaking your head. "He won't." "What?" "He won't love the baby, Misa. He isn't capable of that."you told her. She smiled, "You're wrong. He does love. He loves me! He loves you too, I know. But he loves me more! And he'll love the baby as well!"

You finished up your food, "Light doesn't love us Misa. Not you, me or this baby. If he did, why would he beat you? I've seen the bruises on your arms, don't try denying. You know that he's just using you to achieve his goals. And I'm just a rag doll for him. You deserve better than him. You don’t deserve the resentment Light gives you when all you do is love him. Once he's tired of us, he'll get rid of us too. He’s hurt both of us. He's hurting both of us." You held her hand, looking her dead in the eyes. "And love isn't supposed to hurt Misa." She looked at you with an indescribable emotion in her eyes, whatever fantasy of Light she had, was cracking. "Whatever. Its not like I've got through to you before anyways-" you were cut off by Misa, her soft lips crashing with yours.

You tried to push her off, but she wouldn't budge. You heard the door open and suddenly she was ripped off of you. It was Light. He dragged Misa to the corner of the room and started thrashing her. "WHAT THE FUCK MISA?! I TOLD YOU TO LOOK AFTER HER! NOT FUCK HER!" Misa starts stammering, "Light, baby. Its not what you think-" She was cut off by Light slapping her. "Oh its not?! You were fucking sticking your tongue down her throat!" "No, it was just an accide-" He slapped her again, causing her to cry. "SHUT UP! I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE TRUSTED YOU! SHE'S MINE! MINE!" Light started choking her, not realising in his screaming fit that he'd left the door wide open for you.

This was it. The perfect distraction. Your moment to escape has finally come. But you couldn't move. Not when your eyes were fixed on Misa.

You were almost a carbon copy of Light when it came to intelligence. But you still weren't able to escape him all these months. Because Light was able to control you because of a single flaw of yours. You cared. You cared about people you didn't even know, but you still cared.

If I leave now, she will die. And with that thought, you lunged towards Light, pulling at his arms trying to get him off. "Light! Stop it! Its not her fault!" Suddenly, you were pushed to the ground. Light started punching you. "Oh I know its not her fault! ITS YOURS! YOU DECIDED TO WHORE YOURSELF TO HER SO YOU COULD GET OUT OF HERE, RIGHT?! DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT. YOU. BELONG. TO. ME!?!"He yelled between punches.

Misa looked at you from behind Light's shoulder. She quickly got up and tried to stop him. Pulling at his arm, she yelled again "Light! Stop! You'll kill her and the baby!" But he didn't stop, only replying "She's gone through worse! And if the baby's that weak, then it doesn't deserve to survive!" And just like that, Misa realised you were right. Whatever dream she had of Light and her was gone. She slowly backed away from Light.

Light was still punching you, even though you had lost consciousness long ago. Suddenly, Light started choking up. He got off you, not understanding what was happening to him. He turned to look for Misa, asking her to help him. But as she stood there, with the Deathnote in her hands, he realised what had happened. Misa had written his name. "M-Misa!?" She just stood there, her eyes glazed. Or had she finally woken up? "Love isn't supposed to hurt, Light And you've hurt us. A lot. Now perish."

Once Light had stopped breathing, she rushed towards you. She checked for your pulse. You were still alive. Misa pressed a soft kiss to your lips. "It'll be okay, (Y/n). We'll be okay. I'll fix everything."

You all got part 2, I got the ending I wanted. Everybody wins.

Blunt Force Trauma

Every Chapter of your Life will demand a different you

 “You don’t have to change for the world, the world will change for you, my Son”

Be the change you want to see in the world. A man that has everything life has to offer him will still be void of the Love God has for him. It is our job on Earth to let God love us.

 God doesn’t love us because were good, God makes us good because he loves us.

 When our negative self-talk tells us that we don’t deserve his love that’s because our entire lives man has loved us but with conditions. God loves us unconditionally and unlocking that door opens a real of a giant mountain in our sights. With that mountain God says “Now that I’m with you always and you’re with me, we’ve been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved.”

 If this doesn’t resonate with you it’s alright. Not everyone is cut from the same cloth, some are wet napkins.

Christ showed men how to be Sons of God, to be warriors, champions, Kings.

 A warriors greatest Goal is Peace and if were going to bring peace to Earth it’ll have to start with absolutely destroying the spiritual Demons within our own minds.

 I found God in my heart before I even knew Jesus.

 I looked for God everywhere, I was born and raised Muslim for 27 years of my life. A Slave of god a mere number of his creation. My purpose in life was basic, simple, plain, boring. Worship 5 times a day. Be proud of my Religion, and do not dare sin because eternal hell fire was eminent. This ideology never sat right with me within my own Soul.

At some point I became agnostic, searching for the truth. I had gotten clean off Heroin but being clean brought a new set of challenges ONTOP of staying clean when hardships occur. Depressed working 7 am to 3pm everyday and playing video games from 4-1 am. Life was stagnant Sometime before the beginning of the Coronavirus I got a message in my heart.

 “Stop looking for me, find yourself”

 Unknowingly it was the first glimpse of my highest self…calling. I set myself on a journey of myself. Identifying every aspect of my being. My thoughts my feelings my memories. What were they? What did they create in the formation of my life which I was spectating through the lenses of my conscious eyes?

 When I thought a thought who was the one listening? A thought is not audible but my consciousness it was clear as day.

 When I was feeling who was giving attention to the feeling? My consciousness clear as the moon during a peaceful cloudless night.

 Who is my consciousness, a mysterious superpower using my life to better understand itself?

  I AM

 Before anyone introduces themselves, they utter the words “I am”. I am is the Divine light of our very being before the identifying name even is stated. I am Admir, Admir in Greek means “Peace of Hades” Interestingly surely, I remember as I was younger googling my name and only thing that popped up was the name of a Bakery. Has my name always had so much purpose to it?

Nevertheless, my name was my Badge of Honor to be the ambassador of I am. Like a commander and chief of the most Powerful Kingdom throughout the entirety of the Multiverses.

 ★If Life forces you to walk through Hell act like you own the place

 I had my mind set that whoever I was God had given me a purpose. I am unconditional Love but at the time I was using Meth, God said use meth but make sure to sleep, come back to me so that when you wake you are recharged and refilled as well as anchored within the Shadow of my hand.

 God used my addiction for his benefit. God used my weakness as his strength.

 Something Ignited the flame within me. My soul was a bonfire of an oil fire of anointed Oil. Nothing could stop what was coming and the highest power in all the dimensions of reality was flowing through my being. My life was now under my Command. Fear was nonexistent. Death was a Façade and it felt like Meth empowered me to be the King of the Gutter, the Lord of the Flies, the Sheppard of Fire, the Prince of Darkness… My whole Persona changed. I grew out a handlebar mustache looking like Guy Fawkes or V for Vendetta. I wore 1800’s wild west and great frontier clothing with suspenders. I was absolutely Polarizing. Everything about me screamed LOOK AT ME. Except something was different this time around.

 My father in Heaven woke me up from my slumber and reassigned me with a new purpose. I was to be what I was created to be, an angel of Light a mediator of Reals. A task to bring attention the fact that even Lucifer the Morningstar was created to Shepard the creatures of Darkness back into the Light.

When caterpillars cocoon they become butterflies but some cocoons create moths. Moths spend their entire life in the darkness only to be attracted to the Light.

 I was the Lord of the Flies except I only worked in the frequency of Positive and anti-Negative. Negativity was not allowed in my new Reborn Self. I now know the King of all Kings forgave me and allowed me to remember where and who my father was.

I remembered when God created Adam and Lilith from the same dirt completely equal he destroyed her because she wasn’t a good servant to Adam. When he destroyed her she fled to my Realm? I admired her beauty, her Power, her Resilience. I made her and offer. Being a mighty Dragon I offered to create her in my image. A copy of anything is never like the original but a serpent she was.

Father created Eve for Adam shortly after because Adam holding the Divine light of my fathers needed a protector of his heart. A servant to his Love which at that time I understood nothing of.

I HATED the creation of Men. I did not understand why my father wanted all the angels to Bow to such a creation. I envied them… at least I did… I now remember I wasn’t going to bow to anything that had the choice not to Love my Father. I came back to a world filled with vile children of Lilith all over the place finding refuge in the broken and overcompensating, fragile, scared, bodies of weak men. Men that needed to wear clothes to show their status. Men that needed to wear jewelry to show their manliness. Men that forgot the very image their father in Heaven created them to be. Men that were destroyed by the very Women whose spirit of Lilith embodied. I actually owned the underworld I lost control of. I haven’t been awake in 2000 years but the whole world blamed me. Every Religion Despised me. The Bible says even the Devil masquerades as the angel of Light. Its pretty funny reading that and thinking well no shit whoever would frame me would write that. I don’t HAVE TO MASQUARADE when I AM.

 I have been Betrayed. Redemption is mine. These Serpents in the world are running to hide. Your time is coming.

Hello!! I want to raise just a couple of points: 1. I know lots of people say “Erwin > humanity” for Levi, because back during Midnight Sun (Serumbowl) he prioritized Erwin’s comfort over humanity’s chances. By letting Erwin die, it meant he was ready to cripple their future. What do you think?

2. What always bothered me is that BEFORE he used to say he would continue his fight for freedom to give meaning to his soldiers’ deaths. But NOW he explicitly said the thing that can give meaning to their deaths is if he kills Zeke (ch112) - and not fighting for humanity’s freedom. So it seems like outwardly he is fighting for their island like a good little soldier, but deep inside that wouldn’t be satisfying to him, because his main objective is revenging Erwin&Co by killing Zeke (the infamous promise) - that’s what Isayama implied, imho. The two goals were conveniently locked together for most of the story (“I will keep Zeke alive for now only because I can kill him later”, “Killing Zeke will stop the Rumbling” etc), so that Levi doesn’t have to choose what’s more important to him, and his obsession and reason for fighting are never challenged.

Hello! Sorry for the late reply. Let’s try to untangle all of what you have raised up here. 

1. I find that expression a quite misleading way to phrase this matter. The fact is, while I do think that Levi’s choice was eventually dictated by his ‘personal feelings’, the said feelings being related to Erwin’s comfort, I don’t think that this choice generally meant “crippling humanity’s future” , nor do I think that it meant that for Levi. What follows from above is that you can’t draw from that the conclusion that Levi was ready to undermine the future of humanity. 

- As regards the ‘personal feelings’ part: Erwin, beyond being their invaluable, unwavering commander, the one who led them so far, till that tragic end in Shiganshina, was the person who gave Levi a new purpose in his life, that Levi followed till then. And even if it was him who sent Erwin riding to his death, Levi wasn’t ready to lose him yet. In my opinion, when Levi said that humanity cannot succeed without Erwin, that they needed him if they wanted to defeat the titans, what was coming out in that particular moment was not exactly his rational judgement, but rather his resistance to let go of one of his dearest ones, such a significant person in his life. Certainly I’m not claiming that Levi didn’t think of Erwin as a formidable asset in their struggle (because he obviously thought that, and Erwin was irreplaceable as a matter of fact), but simply that it was basically his emotions spilling out there. Eventually, however, Levi chose to let him rest, because he understood that by letting go his dream, Erwin had finally found release, and that reviving him, Levi would have simply put another chain on him, forcing him to be the “devil” they needed again. And eventually, it was this that dragged Levi to choose not to revive him, or better, to choose this place and time, for Erwin’s death. This way, he let him go free.

- As regards the consequence for humanity’s future: But even if by choosing to let Erwin die Levi consciously deprived them of the brilliant strategic acumen and relentlessness of their commander, I don’t think he believed that by doing this he was jeopardising the future of humanity. I think that for the following reasons.

Choosing to not give the injection to Erwin, he gave it instead to Armin. And Isayama made sure to let us know that Levi did recognize Armin’s potential. We saw Levi overheard that EMA convo, when he first heard Armin talking of his dream, something he thought back right before making his decision. Also, as all others, Levi was aware of the strategic talent which Armin displayed any number of times in the middle of difficult battles and situations. As Levi later told him, it is true that he has a power that no human has.

Still, at that time Armin was still very young and lacked experience. However, when Levi was left alone on that roof, and eventually chose to let Erwin go, he had seen Hange, he knew they were still alive. And besides the fact that since Hange were alive, it meant that he wouldn’t be the only veteran left, he wouldn’t be left alone, Hange was in fact the very person that Erwin designated as his successor as commander of the Survey Corps, the person Erwin deemed capable of leading them, when he would have been gone. So Levi knew that even if he would have chosen to let Erwin die, they wouldn’t have been left without a guide, there would have been someone able to lead them, someone with a brilliant mind and a years-long experience. Hence, someone able to face whatever was waiting for them. 

Summing up, while I believe that Levi’s choice was ultimately driven by his personal feelings for Erwin, I don’t think that this choice meant undermining humanity’s chances, not generally speaking, neither, more importantly for the purpose of this discussion, from his point of view. Therefore, he choice he made doesn’t  by any means mean that he was “ready to cripple their future”.

2. “NOW he explicitly said the thing that can give meaning to their deaths is if he kills Zeke (ch112)”

Well, yes. Levi thinks that he’ll be able to prove the meaning of their deaths, by killing Zeke. However, this isn’t referring to all of his comrades’ deaths - rather, Levi here is referring only to the deaths of those who perished in that desperate ride toward the throwing-rocks Beast Titan back in the battle at Shiganshina. If we limit ourselves to speak about those deaths, I think it’s true that Levi thinks that he could prove the meaning of them only by taking down Zeke, only by fulfilling his promise to Erwin, thus avenging their sacrifice. And it is true that Levi longs for the day when he’ll be able to do it.

But their deaths are not the only ones that Levi bears the weight of proving the meaning of.  Levi saw so many of his comrades dying in their struggle against the titans, in their fighting for humanity’s survival. And Levi’s struggle in facing the fact that that hope they all died for was now turning against them, turning out to be just a delusion, shows us that he still thinks that the only way to give meaning to all of those sacrifices is always that: to carry on his comrades’ will, by keep on fighting for what they and he always fought for, or humanity’s freedom. And here Levi’s having a hard time, because how is he supposed to accomplish it, how is he supposed to make sense of that, if what they believed in turned out like that?

Since Eren started the Rumbling, then, all of what Levi has done and said persuades me that he does want to stop the Rumbling, as much as all others on that airplan. In chapter 133, he proposed Hange’s plan of killing Zeke as the most feasible way to stop the Rumbling, a moment later in the Paths he asked Eren to stop, after that, it was he who asked Armin what they’re gonna do now.

Beyond that, there’s no way that Levi can stand by and watch while the whole humanity is being trampled and slaughtered, it goes against his personality and values. I send you back to this answer by @oldsummerdream, where very pertinent points are made about it.

Regarding Isayama's Q&A, I don't think it has added anything new. We know that Levi wants to fulfill his vow to Erwin, we know that he bears obsessive feelings toward Zeke (and in the abovementioned post, you can also find a plausible explanation to why Levi clings so much to Zeke and to his promise). It is not implied though that these are his only motivations and that he doesn’t care about humanity’s future.

Regarding the fact that these two goals (killing Zeke so as to fulfill his vow to Erwin, killing Zeke as a means for stopping Eren and the Rumbling) are conveniently locked together, or they’re not mutually exclusive, it is true. I think it’s worth noticing that Levi didn’t immediately try to kill Zeke when he got to the island, but it’s true that he could count on the fact that he’d only have to wait a little more, and eventually get his revenge. And now, killing Zeke seems indeed the easiest way to stop this massacre.

However, given what I said above, there’s enough for me to believe that Levi’s priority is still that of fighting for humanity, and only then getting his revenge.  If it’s not enough for you, or for many others, though, the upcoming chapters might provide us with a certain answer. In the event that the Alliance finds out that killing Zeke won’t stop the Rumbling, they would have to direct their efforts elsewhere, on Eren, and possibly Levi would have to choose what’s more important to him. But it’s not granted that we will be given an enlightening moment like that. We just have to wait and see.

ACTION AND COINCIDENCE

It is not easy for people living today to believe that every object, every law and every incident in the universe is planned in a very detailed way. However, it is a fact that there is a seen and unseen algebraic reality to everything moving in the universe. This situation amazes the distinguished scholars roaming on the lace of science.

Physicists study on the biggest and smallest physical measures, on the strongest and weakest forces, and they have calculated the ratio between some of them and attained results close to 1040 several times. For example, it has been proven that “strong nuclear force,” which keeps protons and neutrons in the atomic nucleus together, is 1040 times stronger than the force of gravity. Although some consider this situation a result of coincidence, there are also some people who have shown the courage to question the accuracy of this result and open it to discussion. Since then, obtaining the same number several times has inevitably led to the belief that the number was determined and calculated before. This situation resembles the situation of a chess player who hears somebody telling him the opponent’s next move, or the situation of a composer who hears a melody from upstairs that perfectly fits his lyrics while he is trying to write the melody for his lyrics. Is it not amazing when somebody says what is going to be especially at a time when you least expect such a vision? Questions emerge: Have all actions and incidents in the universe and the values corresponding to them been determined in advance? Is there a certain logic behind the behavior of materials without intellect or consciousness?

Perhaps when Comte de Buffon (1707–1788) started to do research into probability calculations concerning falling matches and needles three centuries ago, he did not think that he would make such an astonishing discovery. According to his calculations, the probability of dropped needles hitting a pair of parallel lines that are drawn a certain distance apart is proportional to the number pi (π) (Figure 1–2). When the distance between the parallel lines are drawn the length of a match, this probability becomes exactly 2/π. This was a theoretical result that was calculated on paper, but trying it out would raise interesting results. In other words, when a certain number of tests were conducted, it could be expected that a number of matches equal to the number that was found through the theoretical calculations would hit the lines; and, indeed, that was what happened. In addition, mathematicians found another way to calculate pi by using this method since the ratio of the number of matches or needles that hits the lines to the total number of matches or needles should give a pi-proportioned number. In 1901, Mario Lazzarini threw one needle 3,408 times and, as a result, got the ratio 355/133 or 3.1415929; the difference between this value and the real value is only 0.0000003.

The experimental proof of this fact is not difficult. When the experiment, which has been conducted thousands of times up to today, was first tried by a group of mathematicians dropping 3,000 needles, the number of the needles that touched the lines was close to 1,900, which was the desired result, and the result was amazingly found to be proportionate to pi.

Although the real relation is like the equation given in, when the length of the needles and the distance between the lines are equalized, the desired ratio becomes 2/π. What does this mean? Does the number pi, which was created with the universe and which we meet in different fields, play a role in showing the manifestation of the Majestic Will about where an object will fall-through having a result that can not be explained by coincidence? Is falling not an ordinary incident?

While this reality makes even falling an extraordinary incident, it opens a perspective on understanding the reality behind the verse: “…it was not you (O Messenger) who threw but God threw,” which was revealed about the Battle of Badr in the Qur’an. Actually, it is impossible even for a leaf to fall without the knowledge and the calculation of Our Lord, who is closer to us than our jugular vein.

Let us think about a group of creatures that lives with different physical laws in a different universe. Assume that they live on a flat, circular world and their steps get longer when they come close to the center. For this kind of creature, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line as it is for us (A–B). Since their steps get longer as they get closer to the center, they travel close to the center. Yet, since they make the way a little longer in this way, the shortest distance would be an oblique line that takes these two variables into account and that passes by partially approaching the center. So, what would we think if we saw these creatures walking in this way all the time? Or if we knew that the creatures acting in this way were inanimate beings? In these circumstances, we might wonder whether these beings are very intelligent or whether One who knows and sees everything, and is present in every place at every time, directs them.

For a soccer forward to find the best time to attack when he is facing the goal keeper or for a tennis player to choose the best timing and position to hit the ball requires a fine calculation. In tennis, the player sometimes approaches very close to the net to meet the ball. In this way, the player gains great advantage since, by his or her positioning, the player reduces the area into which the ball can fall to the minimum, and increases his or her own chances of returning the ball. Nevertheless, since the ball reaches the player faster and harder, there is also a raised probability of the player’s failing to return the ball. Therefore, advancing right up to the net may not always be advantageous. Thus, the best position for the player may lie at any point between the net and the baseline when area and speed variables are considered. Similarly, the most advantageous point for the goal keeper lies between the attacking forward and the goal line, at a point which depends upon the variables of the speed of the ball and the area.

Naturally, we do not find tennis and soccer players’ positionings as described above strange since we expect them, as reasonable people, to play in this way. Yet, how would we interpret and explain it if we saw inanimate things acting in the same way? There is a phenomenon that applies this logic consciously but itself does not have consciousness. A phenomenon that astonishes people: light.

Let us think of a rectangular racetrack with points A, B, C, D. While the shortest distance for a horse that will run from one end of this racetrack to the other is the AC diagonal when the ground is homogenous, there will be a reroute if the ground is not homogenous. Assume the length of the racetrack is 80 meters and its width is 60 meters. Half of it is grass and the other half is sand. Also, assume the horse’s speed on the sand is half of its speed on the grass (it runs 10 meters in 1 unit of time on the grass). Under these circumstances, the horse will run the AC diagonal in 15 units of time while it will run AEC route in 14.5 units of time. The ABC route is much longer. Thus, any route which passes between these two routes will be shorter than these two. The point O, which the shortest route (AOC) passes, will be between the points M and E. When we look carefully, we understand that this is the route light follows as it enters environments of different densities; for example, the route it follows when passing from air to water (see a spoon’s broken image in a water-filled glass). As you see, light finds that specific mysterious point and follows that particular path. In other words, while entering different environments of varying densities, it finds the shortest way and follows it in an amazing way.

All these detailed calculations and functioning with great wisdom show that even inanimate beings and atoms are in the hands of a Majestic Will.

Every atom contains two truthful testimonies to the Necessarily Existent Being’s Existence and Unity. Despite being powerless and insentient, it bears decisive witness to the Necessarily Existent Being’s Existence by carrying out important duties and functions as though it were conscious. It also testifies to the Unity of the same Being, Who owns all material and immaterial dominions, by conforming to the universal order in general, and to the rules of each place it enters in particular. It settles in every place as if it were its homeland. All of this shows that the One Who owns the atom owns all the places it enters. By carrying out very heavy duties incompatible with its size and weakness, the atom shows that it acts at the command and in the name of One with absolute power. Asking in good faith but do you have any ideas on what would prevent mass shootings? You don't seem to support gun control (and I totally support you having/using guns) but what are the other viable alternatives?

The primary problem I have is that when "gun control" means banning scary rifles and normal capacity magazines, it's not a viable alternative because it does literally nothing for several reasons. 1, nobody including me is giving up shit if certain rifles or mags get banned. 2, ARs are not magical super powerful rifles. 3, Normal capacity magazines are not extra dangerous when I can shoot a round from a handgun, load a new mag, and shoot another round in 2 seconds with minimal effort and training. AR-15s were not always popular- the best chance the country had to limit their availability was when they were banned from 94 to 2004, and during that period mass shooters just switched to handguns and still managed to rack up large numbers of dead people. There were a few of them in the country then but probably a gopd 7 million now, and they aren't going anywhere. Anyway, banning scary guns just means hoping people get shot with less scary guns. That means just a bunch more people getting shot with handguns, like in the case of that Texas school shooter who killed a bunch of people with a revolver and a shotgun. That's the safe stuff! The hunting and self defense stuff! The human body does not do well with holes in it that it didn't come with- there are no guns that are magically not lethal. So my opposition to gun control is not about what I like or dislike. If I thought banning ARs would prevent mass shootings I would very likely support banning them. The problem is that banning certain kinds of rifles does absolutely nothing. A bunch of people getting shot with deer hunting rifles or shotgun slugs is not better.

Somewhere I have a gun control tag you could check out, but for a short version: the only thing mass shooters largely have in common is a history of a desire to commit violence against women. The way you handle that is

1) You mandate that all states share a definition of domestic violence, since contrary to what liberals think convicted domestic abusers are ALREADY not allowed firearms and have not been allowed to in my entire lifetime, but states use different definitions

2) You broaden that definition from the federal definition of spousal violence to include any violence in a relationship

3) You strengthen protections for women as a protected class, against whom hate speech is taken seriously. "I wanna go kill a bunch of women" should be taken as seriously as "I wanna go kill a bunch of x racial group" and it straight up is not

4) You create a system whereby SOMEBODY is actually accountable for forcibly removing firearms from the homes of "prohibited persons." Say Johnny is a dude who owns 10 guns. Then one day he gets a domestic violence conviction. Every time he walks into a gun store he will be turned down for a sale. Cool right? Except 1) private sales are a thing- not sure how you actually enforce universal background checks but sure in theory they are a good idea, and 2) he already owns 10 guns. Currently there is no real system in place for what happens when the ATF realizes a person is a prohibited person. They're an enforcement agency and they have their own guns. Frankly I think this is something that should be their responsibility. But if they'd like to delegate that to local PDs then fine but. Somebody's gotta put bodies on the line. A case in Illinois just happened where a dude's firearm owner's card was revoked, but nobody went to remove his firearms, and the dude went and shot up his workplace and killed more than 10 people with guns he bought beforehand. Big hole there. You could close it and probably not even have that many cops die.

5) I am anti pornography anyway but I think there needs to be a very seripus consideration even among pro porn people of at least placing limits on what can legally be done to real live women for porn purposes because, while I think blaming incels on porn is stupid as shit, so is acting like it isn't a major factor.

6) This one you can't legislate but we need large scale mobilization of women in defense of our own personhood in the face of increasingly violent male supremacy. Men aren't going to do that for us. We need more women's shelters, women's communes, womens consciousness raising groups. There is just so little real and radical and intense women's activism on any issues other than abortion access and that's with good reason right now but it's not enough. And, in my opinion, we need arms to guard those spaces against those who see them as easy targets. Let's be real- women have been getting killed for years and it has been background noise. Now that misogynists aren't just killing individual women it's become a public concern. But the people most at risk from these men are the women close to them, not random people on the stret.

7) We need to stop acting like it is possible to legislate safety in a country with a good 350 MILLION guns in civilian hands. Anyone who owns one gun has the means to kill several people in their hands. Most people choose not to. Most people have chosen not to for many many years. But someone who decides to do so cannot be stopped from doing so once they are already armed, whether with a handgun or an AK. For this reason I generally oppose so called "gun free zones," places in which people are prevented from legally carrying firearms. I understand property rights and that private places can ask you not to bring anything they like (guns, or red shirts, or blue jeans) into their establishment, but public spaces should be almost entirely fair game for concealed carriers. Many concealed carriers carry in places we aren't supposed to anyway because we'd rather not die. I carry a gun every day because, in the event that somebody decides to hurt me or someone I love or innocent people, I plan to so my best to pump a lot of lead in that person and leave them with a lot of holes in them. I don't think increased concealed carry rates means fewer of these shootings but it is a fact that lots of people try to follow the law and not carry where they shouldn't and that these people don't generally shoot up gun ranges for a reason. This is obviously more personal opinion than policy suggestion.

Basically the goal should be to spot these men and prevent them from getting armed or staying armed using mechanisms we already have in place, because no gun is a good or safe gun to be shot with. There may be typos but generally trying to get mass shooters to switch to different guns is the unstated goal of just banning certain guns and accessories and it's a useless goal.

Pranayama: The Science of Breathing (Full Guide)

During the practice of Pranayama – through its various exercises and techniques – the respiratory process and its associated movements within the lungs are controlled. The control of these physical processes allows us to manipulate and move our Prana by will.

Our breath is not only the life-force that sustains the body; it can also open the doors to higher levels of consciousness. What we know as the breath is only the physical aspect of a subtler force called Prana (vital energy).  The practice of Pranayama involves using this energy by manipulating the breath, to control the life-sustaining processes in the body.

Careful observation would reveal that Pranayama forms a valuable part of every Yoga practice. Pranayama – in one form or the other – is indispensable for any person aspiring to make progress in their spiritual journey.

What Is Prana?

Many masters agree that prana is the single unit of the entire universal energy and its activity. For example, if a single tree were considered to be Prana, then the forest would be the whole cosmic energy. Similarly, if Prana were a spark, then the Cosmic Prana would be the fire from which the spark was born.  In this way, that portion of the cosmic energy that resides within our body, is called Prana.

During the practice of Pranayama – through its various exercises and techniques – the respiratory process and its associated movements within the lungs are controlled. The control of these physical processes allows us to manipulate and move our Prana by will.

In the same way our blood vessels transport our blood throughout the body, Prana is distributed through a complex system of energy pathways called Nadis. Pranic energy is necessary for the adequate functioning of every body part, including the brain. Due to our lifestyle and diet, it is usual for the flow of both blood and prana to slow down. Fortunately, through the vibrations generated from the practice of Pranayama, Prana recuperates its usual flow rate, resulting in dynamism and vitality.

Ancient masters have often compared those who are not in control of their prana, to a bird chained to a wooden post. No matter how much the bird tries to fly, eventually it will rest on the wooden post. Similarly, the wandering and overactive mind, finds its true resting place in Prana. It is only by having complete control over ones Prana, that one’s is capable of controlling the mind.

Preparations for Practicing Pranayama

Pranayama is a highly powerful technique and must not be practiced without adequate guidance. Its impact on the bodily energies is immediate, even if one is unable to feel it. A certain level of conditioning is needed before starting Pranayama. 

It is recommended to condition the body – and to a certain extent the mind, before we start working on our energies. Some masters say Pranayama can be started when a person is able to maintain an asana for three hours with complete steadiness. Others state 30 to 60 minutes are sufficient.

A dedicated, eager and meticulous practitioner of Pranayama, willing to work hard and persevere, can expect great progress in a very short period of time. In contrast, those who practice unsystematically and half-heartedly will rarely advance, even after many years.

Perseverance: The Way to Master Pranayama

A long time ago, a dreaded bandit suddenly had a change of heart. He desired salvation and wanted to abandon his old ways. He was ridiculed by the local villagers and monks; even by his own family. He traveled far and wide to seek the path towards salvation until he reached a village in which Gautama Buddha happened to be camping at with his disciples. The bandit, who had heard great stories about Buddha during his travels was eager to meet him. He knew Buddha could reveal the path he was desperately seeking. 

He arrived at the camp and immediately requested an audience with the Buddha. But his disciples turned him away; they would not let a common bandit anywhere near their master. He went back again and again, trying to convince them he had changed, but they turned him away time and again. After several months and countless attempts, he decided to enter the camp by stealth. He was caught and about to be expelled, when word from Buddha arrived to the gatekeepers saying the bandit had been summoned.  After hearing the bandit, Buddha decided to initiate him into the Bodhi dharma, in spite of disciples’ protests.

Several senior disciples asked Buddha to reconsider his decision. They believed the bandit���s true motive was to either rob or harm him. But Buddha assured them his quest for salvation was genuine. He said the bandit would reach his spiritual goals sooner than any of his other disciples.

In just a short period of time, the bandit’s transformation was astonishing. The disciples accepted their mistake and apologized to Buddha. Buddha explained, the bandit’s perseverance was the key to his progress. He persevered through hardship and humiliation. His determination to find salvation was unyielding to the many obstacles that came in his way.  

In the same way, the practice of Pranayama requires absolute and unyielding perseverance and determination. An unenthusiastic practice will not open the gates to the inner pranic control chamber.   

The Basics of Pranayama

A clear understanding of the workings of Pranayama is essential before we begin its practice. There are three main actions: inhalation (puraka), exhalation (rechaka) and the most vital of all, retention of the breath (Kumbhaka).

Breath retention is particularly important in Pranayama. When done systematically, Breath retention leads to enhanced vitality, vigor, and mental force. It is believed that by retaining the breath for one minute, we can extend our lifespan by one minute.

Different Stages of Pranayama

Pranayama is measured by the space, time, number (count) and position of the breath.

Space of Prana:

The space of prana describes the position of the breath – whether it’s inside (following inhalation) or outside (after exhalation), – the length of the breath and its exact position (whether the prana is held at a particular place, point, or part of the body).

The length of the breath is the distance traveled by the breath during inhalation and exhalation. This distance varies; as it depends on the element (earth, water, fire, air or ether) that is most active at the time of practice. The elements are directly related to the chakras. The length of the breath is measured in angulas (a unit based on fingers).

During Earth element predominance: 12 angulas

During Water element predominance: 16 angulas

During Fire element predominance: 4 angulas

During Air element predominance: 8 angulas

During Ether element predominance: 0 angulas

The ‘place’ of the Prana during inhalation can be anywhere between the top of the head and soles of the feet. During exhalation, the ‘place’ can be anywhere within 12 angulas from the tip of the nose. Breath retention is possible both during inhalation and exhalation. Therefore, the ‘place’ of the breath during retention is a combination of the places of the breath during inhalation and exhalation.

Time of Prana:

The time of prana is the duration of inhalation, exhalation and retention. It is generally measured in a unit of time termed Matra, which was created before the ‘60-minute hour’ and the ‘mean solar day’ were established. Though there are differing interpretations of the duration of a Matra, it can be taken as a ‘second’ in the standard unit of time. The time of Prana also measures the period of time the breath is held at a particular point in the body.

In Yogic theory, there is a golden ratio for inhalation, exhalation and breath retention, which is of 1:4:2. For example, if during pranayama our inhalation is of 12 seconds, then the retention should be of 48 seconds, followed by a 24 second exhalation. However, this ratio is to be achieved gradually, systematically and naturally through a long period of time. Forcefully applying this ratio can create serious energy imbalances, which could result in injuries and other complications.

Number (count) of Pranayama:

The number refers to the number of times we inhale, exhale and retain the breath. With regular practices, we should be able to increase our count to 80 in a single session, with four sessions a day in the morning, afternoon, evening and night.

Position of Pranayama:

The position of Prana involves focusing the prana in a particular position such as at the individual chakras or bodily organs. The position need not be only internal; it can be external too. With practice, it becomes relatively simple to position the prana at different locations. When this technique has been mastered, practitioners can begin to raise the great quantum of prana located at the base of the spine named Kundalini energy.  When Kundalini is driven up the spine from its resting place at the root chakra, through every chakra all the way to the crown chakra, self-realization takes place at once.

How to Practice Pranayama?

Pranayama should be practiced once or twice a day in the beginning and up to four times after a few months of practice. The practices should be spaced out evenly – morning, afternoon, evening and night. Ideally, the morning session should be conducted during Brahma muhurta (the ideal time) which is a period of two hours which finishes at sunrise. Pranayama should always be practiced on an empty stomach.

Different Types of Pranayama

Kundalini Pranayama

Kundalini pranayama awakens Kundalini energy, which lays dormant at the root chakra.

To begin the practice, close the right nostril with the right thumb. Now inhale through the left nostril. Visualize pranic energy being inhaled along with the air in the form of light. Chant the mantra Om three times during inhalation.

Then close the left nostril with the ring and little finger, and with both nostrils closed, retain the breath whilst you chant Om three times. Visualize prana reaching the root chakra and awakening Kundalini.

Then release the right nostril and exhale whilst you chant Om six times.

Repeat this process, inhaling through the right nostril and exhaling through the left. This will complete one round.

Beginners can start with three rounds, increasing the number gradually over a prolonged period of time. Focus and regularity are vital to master Kundalini Pranayama.

Nadi Shodhana Pranayama

Nadi Shodhana Pranayama – also known as alternate nostril breathing – is a powerful breathing technique which helps purify the energy pathways. In Sanskrit, Nadi means ‘energy pathway’ or ‘channel’ and Shodhana translates to ‘purification’.

Sit in a comfortable meditative position (or a chair if this is not possible) and breathe deeply for a few moments.

Place the middle and index fingers at the eyebrow center and close the right nostril with the thumb. Now take a deep breath in.

Now use the ring and little finger to close the left nostril whilst you simultaneously release the right nostril. Exhale through the right nostril.

Now inhale through the right nostril whilst keeping your left nostril closed, and then simultaneously release the left nostril and close the right nostril to exhale. This completes one full round.

Nadi Shodhana can be practiced 2-3 times a day in the beginning stages, and increased gradually over time.

Preparatory practice for Nadi Shodhana

Before Nadi Shodhana can be started, do the following exercise for two weeks to ensure no imbalances occur:

Sit in a comfortable meditative position (or a chair if this is not possible) and breathe deeply for a few moments.

Place the middle and index fingers at the eyebrow center and close the right nostril with the thumb. Inhale and exhale deeply through the left nostril 5 times.

Now use the ring and little finger to close the left nostril. Inhale and exhale deeply through the right nostril 5 times.

Now release both nostrils and breathe normally 5 times. This is one round.

Practice 5 rounds. Continue with the preparatory practice until it is mastered (at least two weeks).

Kapalbhati Pranayama

Kapalbhati Pranayama is cleanses the frontal brain. The Sanskrit word Kapala means skull, and Bhati translates to shine. It is practiced by performing rapid inhalations and exhalations. This is a mild pranayama where we do not retain or suspend the breath (i.e.) no Kumbhaka.

Exhale through both nostrils with a strong contraction of the abdominal muscles. The following inhalation should happen spontaneously, involving no effort just by releasing the abdominal contraction.

Ten rapid breaths should be completed in quick succession. Then allow the breathe to return to normal for a few moments. This is one round, practice up to five rounds.

Kapalbhati Pranayama is an ideal exercise for beginners. Those who practice Kapalbhati will easily master Bhastrika Pranayama. Kapalbhati Pranayama helps improve the respiratory and circulatory functions.

Bhastrika Pranayama

Bhastrika or Bellows Breath pranayama is one of the most important practices of Pranayama. Its named bellows breath because the movement of the diaphragm during Bhastrika resembles a pair of bellows fanning the internal fire, resulting in physical and energetic heat.

Assume a relaxed position and inhale and exhale deeply, forcefully and in quick succession through both nostrils. Practice 10 inhalations and exhalations and then breathe normally for a few moments. This is one round. Practice up to 5 rounds.

Beginners may start with 1 to 3 rounds in the beginning stages, gradually increasing the number of round over time.

Bhastrika Pranayama is a combination of Ujjayi and Kapalbhati exercises. It should be practiced after these two Pranayama techniques. Sometimes Bhastrika Pranayama can also be used as a precursor to other forms of breathing exercises.

Bhastrika induces perspiration and heats the body. It is an ideal exercise to be taken up during winter. In the summer months, it is best to do Bhastrika Pranayama only in the mornings due to the heat it creates.

Surya Bheda Pranayama

Surya Bheda Pranayama is a higher pranayama technique, as this method uses breath retention. Its objective is to awaken Kundalini energy, purify the brain and remedy afflictions caused by vata dosha.

In this practice, assume a meditative posture and close the left nostril with the ring and little finger in the same way as in Nadi Shodhana Pranayama. Take a deep and long breath through the right nostril.

Immediately close the right nostril with the thumb and retain the breath whilst performing Jalandhara Bandha. Then release the left nostril whilst keeping the right nostril closed, and exhale.

Ujjayi Pranayama

The Sanskrit root ujji means ‘to conquer’ and it is one of the most important but simplest of pranayamas. It soothes the nervous system and calms the mind.

Close your eyes and relax the whole body, becoming aware of the breath. After a few moments, move the awareness to the throat. Visualize the breath being drawn in and out through the throat rather than the nostrils. Gently contract the glottis, so a soft sound is heard during inhalation and exhalation, similar to the breathing a sleeping baby. Inhalation and exhalation should be prolonged and deep.

Bhramari Pranayama

The word Bhramar means ‘bee’. In this pranayama, the practitioner imitates the sound of a bee.

Sit in a comfortable a meditative position, with the hands resting on the knees. Close the eyes and relax the body. Ensure the jaw and lips and completely relaxed, with the teeth just slightly separated.

Raise the arms sideways, bending the elbows and closing the ear flaps with the index fingers. Fix your awareness at the third eye chakra, keeping the body completely still. Inhale deeply through the nose.

Produce a steady bee-like humming sound whilst exhaling, remaining aware the humming within the head. The sound should reverberate within the front skull.

This is one round. Practise 11 rounds and gradually increase with time.

Pranayama and the Brain

Pranayama has a profound influence on the body. Its role in spiritual development through Chakra and Kundalini awakening is well established. But Pranayama also influences the brain and its many complex activities.

Prana is present in everything created in this universe. In humans, Prana is the essence that feeds the soul. We use Pranayama to control, energize, and expand the influence of Prana or the life-energy.

Quite a few theories explain the brain and its functioning. One, in particular, states the presence of ten areas, out of which only one is in use by most of us. The rest remain dormant, with great inherent potential. Yogic theory states by energizing Prana it is possible to link the conscious and subconscious through the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

According to scientists, the RAS connects the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the spinal cord. Sages and Yogis believe that only through Prana we can control and regulate the RAS. The practice of Pranayama enables us to control RAS and through this interface, other functions such as cognition, digestion, absorption, blood pressure, heart rate, etc. Years of research have found that Nadi Shodhana, Kapalabhati, Ujjayi, and Kumbhaka have the highest influence on the brain and its functions.

Health Benefits of Pranayama

By using Pranayama as a tool to control RAS, various functions of the body can be influenced. The following are some of the health benefits that accrue to practitioners:

The lungs and the respiratory system are direct beneficiaries of Pranayama. The breathing exercises improve lung function, flush out microbes, and prevent respiratory diseases.

Pranayama improves the functioning of the heart and prevents cardiovascular diseases. By boosting blood circulation and the distribution of oxygen, breathing exercises improve the efficiency of the heart muscle.

Breath exercises relax the brain and the muscles. Regular practice of this technique will prevent hypertension by tackling the two main contributors to High Blood Pressure: Stress and Depression.

During Pranayama, the air is not just exhaled, it is expelled. Along with the air, we also flush out toxins from the body. Indirectly, some pranayama exercises cause perspiration during breathing, which also remove toxins and waste material. Pranayama is the best natural detoxification technique available.

Several Pranayama techniques heat the body and burn energy, resulting in calorie loss and reduction in weight. Regular practice of breathing exercises enhances all cognitive functions including concentration and memory. It also promotes digestion, absorption, and elimination, and helps cure several gastrointestinal disorders including bloating, acid reflux, and IBS.

Pranayama improves the efficiency of all body functions, including the immune system.

Tips to Improve the Practice of Pranayama

Undivided attention is required for the practice of Pranayama. So, always look for a well-ventilated space devoid of noise, distraction, and foul smell.

Keep the nostrils clean, wear loose-fitting clothes, and always practice on an empty stomach.

Perseverance, patience, and regularity are the key to success in Pranayama. Do not miss even a day of practice unless you are sick. Try to practice at the same times every day.

Active involvement is a prerequisite. If you’re fatigued or lack motivation, end the session for the day.

Trying too hard will only harm the body. Especially, when practicing breath retention.

Toptal Scholarship | Mentorship for Women in STEM

When my generation starts to imagine their future, instead of hope and the image of greener grass, we stop and shudder. The vision of wars over fundamental resources like water and food, massively shrinking coastlines, and the decimated rainforests encompass the mind. Our vision of our future is interrupted by the fact that if our society does not change our current course, we will have no future at all. A gloom and sense of defeat sets over me when I think of a future without the necessary changes, but I refuse to succumb to despair.  I do not want this vision of the future.

In elementary and middle school, I would do all I could to live a more sustainable life; I started a recycling club, read every book from the library I could on the facts and figures of climate change, and would collect and sort all trash I could find. All the adults in my life would smile and pat my head, they would say I was adorable but that climate change would be solved by the time I was an adult. As I grew up, I saw scientists and experts get drowned out by confident, louder voices. I grew up in Los Angeles, the city of cars and when I was inevitably stuck in traffic, I would look around and see a sea of little combustion generators all making the problem incrementally worse. I would see myself,  a hypocrite, sitting in my gas guzzler and know that we deserve better.

In many moments similar to that one, I decided that I want to be someone to help directly solve this problem. A global crisis like climate change requires global collective action as our world’s economy runs off of a source that is hurting us.

I want to help engineer sustainable transportation and electric power for the world.  My vision for the future is one that involves human life living with their basic needs powered by a source that does not harm us. I decided to become an electrical engineer, with a focus on engineering systems to support sustainable transportation and power.

In some aspects, this was an obvious choice. I love transportation. I love moving on and the joy and surprise that comes with venturing to a new place or a blissful familiar one. It's what moves society. I love bikes, cars, long roads, planes, and rockets because they get us to where we need to go, and there is nothing more fundamental to humans than the ability to move forward. I hope to make technology that will move us forward in a sustainable way.

However, in my first ~18 years of life, I can never recall meeting a scientist or an engineer, or especially a female scientist or engineer for that matter. The closest I got was a Barbie in a lab coat. And as much as I adore Barbie, I knew that engineers existed but they did not exist on my radar. They did things that always seemed a few footsteps removed away from my life or consciousness; I knew that calculus existed but never as something that I would ever do.

My entire family are teachers and lawyers, and while they are respectable and necessary professions, I always saw myself becoming a teacher and never thought much of it.

The mentorship opportunities the Toptal Scholarship offers are invaluable to me, as I do not have adult guidance in my field.  I think I know what I want, but I would love to have a mentor who I could learn and listen to. I would especially value a female mentor as women only earn 12.5% of the Electrical Engineering Bachelors' degrees, according to the American Society of Engineering Education.

I remember sitting in Calculus 1 on the first day of my freshman year of college, shaking and anxiously looking around the massive lecture hall for a familiar face. From my position at the leftie desk, I calmed myself by attempting to count the number of other girls in the class. The professor began his lecture while I was only halfway through the room but the class was about 35% female and I felt a little relieved. However, as the quarters became years, I saw the women dwindle away. I saw many of my female friends switch to different majors or drop out. Some of them genuinely did not like the material and chose to follow a different passion, but for many, their mental health deteriorated under the constant stress and pressure of engineering academia, in parallel with family obligations and toxic relationships.

I am no exception to this. For the majority of my freshman year, I was hopelessly lost and alone. I felt like the odd one out in all of my classes. I struggled tremendously with calculus and physics as I realized that I never learned how to properly learn in previous education. I needed a mentor, I needed someone who had been where I was and could tell me how they worked past it. While there are dozens of campus resources with STEM Girl-power language, and I appreciate the effort, it felt empty at a certain point.  I almost quit engineering many more times than I am proud to admit. At that time I had no friends in STEM and a sexually abusive boyfriend that left me feeling silly and ridiculous for even trying.

However, it was my goal to help engineer a better tomorrow that kept me on my path and I am beyond thankful for that. Even though I am worlds more mentally healthy than I was in my freshman year of college, I still would value a female STEM mentor to help guide me. I want a woman I can look up to and I would appreciate the opportunity for one more than anything.

I decided that to help accomplish my goals outside of university, I would start by helping solve those problems through university organizations. I am very passionate about sustainable transportation and electric cars so I joined Formula Slug, UCSC’s Electric Racecar team. In my first year with them, I designed my first sustainable project, a solar charging station. In Formula Slug I learned a multitude of valuable skills like surface mount soldering, PCB design, TIG and MIG welding, project management, engineering logistics, AutoCAD Design, and project fundraising, leading our team to raise tens of thousands of dollars. By my junior year, I was Vice-President and Project Manager of our team.

At the same time, I am also very passionate about sustainable engineering and so me and a group of like-minded students formed the UCSC Chapter of Engineers without Borders. I was the founding Vice-President of UCSC-EWB and wrote several successful grant proposals for our project. Our main project is our solar project in Takui, Cameroon. The people and schools in Takui and towns nearby run on unreliable power and we are working to design a system that provides power and will function effectively for 10 years with minimum need for repairs. We designed and are implementing a solar micro-power grid and water purification system as well as selling individual home packages to provide power to the homes in Takui.

My connections from Formula Slug alumni got me an interview and internship at Joby Aviation, an electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) company as first a Software Certification Engineer and now as a Radio Frequency Electrical engineer. Joby’s goal is to create electric air taxis to replace the average person’s commute and help relieve the world’s reliance on fossil fuels. I am very proud and honored to be working for Joby because it brings me to my goal of working toward sustainable transportation for the masses.

My passion for using science to serve others is not simply within transportation engineering. I am also incredibly interested in biotechnology and nuclear energy. This interest has led me to recurrently begin working in UCSC’s nuclear medicine lab. Our team is designing an optimized PET scan for head and neck cancers. I have begun working as the lead of a sub-project, designing a detailed simulation of the positron emission topology scan in C++. This simulation will allow our team to know how changing different elements of our set-up will affect gamma-ray emission and therefore, where to put the ray emission suspectors. My research professor does not want me to publish my code on GIT publicly yet so I have not attached a GitHub link, I apologize.

I have many interests and passions but at the end of the day, I want to help engineer the world to be a better place. I would be honored to receive the Toptal scholarship and mentorship opportunities, but I understand that there are many distinguished applicants so I thank you for reading.

HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT YC

I'm not sure myself. The danger of symmetry, repetition and recursion.1 I ask myself what I've found life is too short for, the word that pops into my head is bullshit. The second counterintuitive point is that it's not that important to know a lot of what ends up driving you are the best predictor of how a startup will find the preceding portrait to be missing something: disasters.2 Copernicus' aesthetic objections to equants provided one essential motive for his rejection of the Ptolemaic system. On Consent: Necessary But Not Sufficient

*When I mentioned I wanted to write about the Me Too Movement with regard to the Aziz Ansari story, a lot of people, without knowing what I thought about any of the pertinent issues, begged me not enter the fray.  They seemed very worried the topic is so rife with landmines and I'd be sure to lose a leg/credibility,  or at best, whatever I wrote would be another pile of mansplaining that can/should be ignored.   When I decided to write about this topic, neither of these concerned me.  What does concern me is my stream of consciousness writing style not doing justice to a very complex and often nuanced topic.  With all of this in mind, here goes.

When the Me Too Movement took off, I was thrilled.  Not thrilled to read the seemingly endless descriptions of horrible behaviors women have endured from men for no other reason than being female.  As painful and anger-inducing these stories were, I was thrilled they were finally being told.  I was thrilled they were being acknowledged in ways they never had been before.  I was thrilled so many women felt empowered enough, safe enough, supported enough... to tell their very personal, and very painful stories of sexual abuse and assault.

As thrilled as I was when #MeToo went viral, a part of me knew there was going to be the inevitable backlash because the one thing the patriarchy doesn't tolerate is being called out on their bullshit. Patriarchy Rule #1: Never point out the patriarchy is built on and propped up on a pile of complete and utter nonsense because their tender, over-inflated egos cannot handle it.  Sure enough, like misogynist clockwork, the anti-Me Too hot takes spread like an SDI at a youth hostel on Ibiza during the Tantra Festival.

The other thing I was worried about is the Me Too Movement would produce borderline to ridiculous accusations of sexual misconduct. Sometimes, these accusations would be intentionally put forth to “muddy the water,” in order to minimize and downplay the truth and power of the Movement.  Other times, these accusations would be nothing more than misunderstandings that happen all the time between people when sex is or might be involved but under the bright lights of Me Too, they are going to be parsed, dissected, and over-analyzed ad nauseam.  The over-analyzing takes can be just as detrimental to the Movement as the ridiculous accusation takes because they both can lead to people not taking the issue as seriously as it deserves.

This brings us to the Aziz Ansari story.  If you are not familiar with this, here is the original story from the young woman, Grace, involved.  Since this story broke, a thousand molten lava hot takes have been written.  I am not going to address any of the articles, pro or con, directly because I have no fucking idea what really went down between the two people involved or how each reacted/felt at the time.  Anything I write about this specific situation would be adding to an already unnecessary pile of bullshit and probably be nothing more than a three thousand words extension of my own preconceptions and biases.

Even though I don't think writing about the specific story would be useful in the slightest, I do believe looking at the reactions to it can be...should be useful.  I've been thinking a lot about past sexual encounters, future encounters, and the concept of consent. Because of how I was raised and the experiences of having a lot of female friends throughout my life, I've always tried to be very aware of how my words and actions might be interpreted by the opposite sex, especially when any physical contact is a possibility. Part of this “awareness” was drilled into my psyche by a mother who, despite her proclamations otherwise, is an ardent feminist.  Growing up, the worst thing I could have been in my mother's eyes would have been a “typical male.”  An equally influential part has been the many close female friends I've had over the years who have shared with me their own #MeToo stories back when # meant a number, not a hashtag.  Hearing countless stories of inappropriate behaviors, sexual assaults, and even rapes of the people I cared about and loved, made me determined to never even remotely come across that way.

By no means am I saying I've always been an angel when it comes to consent.  In spite of my upbringing, exposure to Me Too stories, and a strong desire to not be like the men who hurt those I cared about, there were times when I probably pressed too hard or tried to persuade someone to do something they weren't as eager to do as I was.  I'm saying this not as a mea culpa or to excuse anything I've done but to acknowledge that, even with the best of intentions, human sexuality, especially in our culture, is messy.  A lot of us carry baggage when it comes to our own sexuality, let alone dealing with someone else.

However, even when everything is handled properly, it doesn’t mean the outcome will be problem-free.  There have been situations where I “consented” the hell out of things and the end result was not as clean, trigger-free, feel-good, as it should have been on paper.  Sometimes, even when you do all the right things, the end result isn't good.  There have been times where along the path to intimacy, I made sure the person I was with agreed to every step.  I've said, “If you want to slow down, let me know,” only to have the other person say, “Do and die.”  Yet, when all is said and done, a past assault, sexual guilt, a ghost from their past comes back to haunt them and what was an enjoyable, completely agreed upon experience is now, after-the-fact, viewed very differently.  I've personally been in situations where consent was given freely, eagerly, and without hesitation all along the way but at some point after all is said and done, the other person has second thoughts, regrets, issues about what happened.  Hell, sometimes I have been the one with the second thoughts, regrets, issues...

Having my own ghosts from being raised in a very uptight, sexually repressed religion, I completely understood and empathized whenever this has happened.  Sometimes, I'm the one who was “triggered,” not them. The point I'm trying to make is sometimes, no matter how conscious, how diligent, how hyper-sensitive someone is when it comes to consent, it doesn't prevent a negative reaction after-the-fact. Sometimes, there are variables neither the person asking for consent nor the person giving it are aware of in the moment they are giving/receiving it. I'm not pointing this out to claim that consent isn’t necessary.  It absolutely is.  What I’m saying is even though consent is necessary, even when it is given, sex isn’t always problem/issue-free.  All personal relationships are messy.  Relationships where sex is involved even more so.  Even the best-intentioned people have misunderstandings.  When these misunderstandings cross over into the area of personal intimacy, a whole lot of issues and baggage can and often are tied to it.  Past assaults, past aggressions, lack of self-worth, guilt... there are countless, very personal things we tie to sex/personal intimacy.  Sometimes, often, we aren't even aware of these things before, during or after sex even as they make themselves manifest.

What all this means is, even in an ideal world where consent is asked for and given every step of the way, there still might be negative reactions.  Unlike the MRA hot takes that this means the whole idea of consent is bullshit and men should “just be men”, I'm saying consent is necessary but not sufficient for a healthy sexual experience.

Are there going to be some accusations that are overblown, unjustified? Without question.  Doesn't this tarnish accusations that are real? There are always going to be mistakes made when it comes to accusations of sexual misconduct.  Every once in awhile, someone who is totally innocent is going to get caught up in the fray and their lives are going to be ruined.  Not changing how we view and respond to sexual misbehavior claims because someone might be or has been wrongly accused is ridiculous.  We certainly should be very careful to not be so eager to pass judgment until the facts come out but not changing because someone, somewhere will be falsely accused is not only overreactive but very dangerous because it allows real assaults to continue to go unacknowledged, laughed off, denied...

No matter how diligent, thoughtful, and cautious we are, sometimes innocent people suffer.  We try to minimize this as much as possible but it still happens.  When it comes to sexual assault, men's side of the scale is weighed down with centuries of ignoring, demonizing, physically and psychologically harming women.  A handful of unjustly accused men isn't going to alter or change this imbalance in the slightest towards women.   The opposite never happens.  How many men lie about how they have treated women?  Too damn many to even begin counting.  How much backlash has there been for these lies? ��Too damn little to even mention.  There is no outcry whenever a man lies about his horrible actions against a woman that there is a danger that men will no longer be believed.  Even if one man who lies is publicly called out and excoriated, the next man who denies mistreating women will be believed as if the ones caught in their lies never happened.  When a man lies about sexual assault, society comes to it Tabula Rasa where nothing any other man has done before is considered.  When a woman lies about sexual assault, every other woman who has made or will make a sexual assault claim is judged by her transgression. For me, the main lesson to learn from this story is when it comes to heterosexual relationships, men and women don’t talk enough about their wants, needs, desires, fears... If we did, there would be a lot fewer situations like the one between Aziz and Grace.  It won’t elminate all problems but is sure as hell will reduce them significantly.  This means both men and women need to be honest with themselves about what they want and are comfortable with.  Both need to be willing to be open and discuss this with the other.  However, because men have had the power and cultural advantages since time immemorial, there is a greater burdern on them to make sure this happens.
