Thoughts on what general audiences can do for the WGA and SAG strikes

I've read up a lot on the strike situation these past weeks because I'm someone who consumes A LOT OF media content. The strike will affect my daily life and I'm a curious girlie when it comes to show biz rules. So here are some of the takeaways I wanna share with my fellow audience:

1. Understand the strike

The strike is happening for 2 major reasons:

1.) The studios are refusing to pay the creators/actors residuals on streaming services.

This makes it hard for the majority of writers and actors to make a living by doing their respective jobs. They used to rely on residuals from old projects (DVD and blue-ray sales, renting, etc.) to pay bills. That's just not happening today.

To try to get out of paying residuals, the major studios started this trend this year to take old and new shows/movies off their streaming platforms and use them as an excuse for a tax write-off. Disney did this last month and got a 1.1 billion tax write-off. They can currently do that without consulting the people involved AT ALL, taking away their livelihood without warning.

2.) The studios want to retain the rights to use AI writing and performing.

In the negotiation with SAG, they proposed a plan to pay actors only one day's wage to use their AI image FOREVER without paying them ever again. And the actors wouldn't have a ground to argue that. This is straight out of Black Mirror Season 6 Joan is Awful. Netflix is really writing its own villain origin story right now.

So what would happen if the workers budge and give up mid-way?

They'll end up losing their means to survive and have their images stolen. So striking for a few months is definitely better than starving indefinitely.

What's happening right now?

Right now, no projects fiananced by AMTPT companies can film with SAG members or develop with WGA members, which means only a very small percentage of all Hollywood productions can still happen. (More to come about this.)

With finished projects, if they're being released in the next few months, they're going to be released without any promo from the actors. They can't take part in interviews, premieres, fan events, or even post about their projects on social media.

2. Help with the strike.

Now that the double strike has officially happened, what's the best outcome for the workers and the audiences?

If you're just a casual entertainment enjoyer:

Cancel the streaming services not essential to you. The studios are going to panic more when they start losing even more money.

If you're a fan of a fanchise/upcoming blockbuster:

Flood the companies behind it, demanding them negotiate with the SAG and WGA on their own and agree to a fair deal. Threat not to support the projects unless it's settled fairly.

These studios with upcoming big-budget movies are bleeding money and panicking right now, any added pressure is good.

If one company buckles, the others would follow suit.

If you have money to spare: (Congrats on being rich, btw!)

Donate to the unions and support the ones with lower income in the first place, they'd be struggling with bills if the strike goes on for too long.

For everyone:

Call out big studios who are still planning on filming projects during the strike.

Please note there are exceptions to the strike rule:

1.) Foreign productions.

Please note an actor has to be part of the foreign union to work on these. Some of the foreign unions are still in meetings to decide if they'll allow US companies to work with their members, the most notable ones being the UK one and the Canadian one. Fingers crossed they don't fall for the deals the US studios are offering.

2.) Indie productions.

Indie companies can make their own deals with the workers since they're not included in the overall deal. So a very small amount of US projects can still happen. Make sure a project doesn't fall into this category before calling them out for scabbing.

That's about it for now. I might add more later in the replies if I think of anything.

I’m not enthused about the trend of calling out a refusal to eat food with MSG specifically as racist. I mean, I’m sure that is a significant driver a lot of the time. But, I’m well familiar with a group of people that’s weirdly careful about what they eat: a lot of chronically ill people are that way. Because you get wonky symptoms now and then and there’s like five things that might be triggering your last episode and you don’t know which one so you just avoid all five, because your symptoms suck. This generates a lot of false positives of course, but you do it because, again, the symptoms suck.

So who’s going to be hurt by the idea that avoiding MSG is racist? Yeah, a lot of people who already don’t get believed about their illness(es). Awesome.

the social justice internet sphere really likes to pick on very specific things. But not being weird about MSG doesn’t mean you’re not racist, and being weird about MSG can coexist with being not racist in other ways and/or actively anti-racist, in the same way that eg just not liking to eat Chinese food can coexist with being not racist or anti-racist.

You can avoid Chinese food and get really pumped up about Everything Everywhere All At Once (congrats on the awards btw.) You can avoid Chinese food and show up at Stop Asian Hate rallies. You can personally not like Chinese food and simultaneously have let your friends know early in the pandemic that Chinese restaurants were being hit particularly hard by COVID due to misinformation so it’s good to support them, and it’s possible to go out of your way to support Asian owned businesses of other sorts. It’s possible for students to push for their schools to have Asian studies courses and to talk about how incredibly fucked up (us-specific) the Chinese Exclusion Act was and (us-specific) how incredibly fucked up the WWII Japanese internment camps were. It’s possible for parents of young kids to push for their kids’ teachers/day care teachers to include stories that have Asian characters and to celebrate Asian holidays, like lunar new year. It’s possible to advocate for your county to have voting materials available in whatever Asian languages immigrants speak where you live and to push for interpreters available at hospitals and other places that people need public services. If you know people (family members? Coworkers?) who sometimes do things like complain about people at the grocery store speaking to each other in a language that’s not English, or talk about “immigrants taking over the country”, you can respond however you think is appropriate — education/persuasion for people who seem persuadable, “I’m not going to stand around listening to your bigotry” for people who aren’t.

And that’s not getting into when people of Asian decent are affected by Islamophobia, there’s a lot going on with that too.

Racial justice is so much bigger than what you think it is. It’s not about harassing people for weirdly specific things that just aren’t by themselves that big a deal. Like, yeah, sure, you know someone who’s being weird about MSG you can follow the “responding to random bigoted comments” script; if you know this person is racist in many other ways and they’re not going to change, and you’re not in a position where you need to be on good terms with them, you can leave or do your best to shut it down; if they seem basically chill but ill informed you can have a dialog with them. But I suspect a lot of this isn’t actually motivated by anti-racism, it’s just bog standard “I want someone to feel superior to” bullshit and that’s always kind of fucked up and in this case I can see the potential for splash damage onto a different marginalized group.

I mean we already get some people who will deliberately feed someone with food allergies the thing they’re allergic to just because, and it’s a lot worse when you think a food is triggering specific symptoms but it’s not a recognized food allergy. There are a lot of people who do actually have adverse reactions to random food things that are innocuous to most people, and who have nothing other than their own experiences to prove it. It seems not completely impossible that there are some people who do actually have adverse effects from MSG, in the same way that some people really do have adverse effects to gluten or how some people benefit from a low FODMAPs diet or, idk, there’s a lot of random food things, everyone’s body is different, some people are allergic to pineapple I mean. And it seems pretty much a guarantee that some people have some reason to believe that MSG is harming them even if it can’t be conclusively shown one way or the other. So bringing racism into it is just kinda undermining people’s ability to manage their health by making educated guesses about “hey I felt this way and this is what preceded it, maybe there’s a connection here.”Again yeah that process gets a lot of false positives. But managing chronic illness sucks balls and sometimes you just have to take guesses. I went off birth control because I had some reason to believe it might help, and I was like 90% sure that was just random bullshit (there is a lot of random fear monger if around hormonal birth control as being unnatural) but it did actually make some of my symptoms better. So. Sometimes things that sound like random bullshit (or seem likely to be based in a racist motivation) actually aren’t. When it’s not your body you should be careful about judging other people.

I have no idea if I will be able to be able to relay all I am experiencing adequately, but here goes nothing. At any rate, I’m better at writing after putting thought into my words. TLDR is at the bottom, but I appreciate anyone who reads through this whole thing. But I understand skipping to the bottom or just skipping me altogether.

Tomorrow, I will see this rheumatologist who I started seeing this year. I got the blood work done for her again. I don’t know how many times I’ve had my blood drawn this year, but the lady who gave me my CT Scan with Contrast back around (May??) said my left arm was tough to find a vein in because the skin was getting tougher and the veins were showing signs of hardening with like scar tissue. But I think she was just struggling, tbh, because the guy I go to for my bloodwork, who practically knows me at this point, can get the vein on the first go with minimal bruising (usually.) I didn’t bruise this time too badly, anyway. So once again, another complete metabolic panel, and for the 50th time this year (a bit of an exaggeration, but every blood test has this one, and I’ve had my blood drawn a lot this year), I had C-Reactive Protein tested, too. Sedimentation Rate made a reappearance and is now being monitored with the C-reactive protein (I guess.) The SedRate was high in Spring/Early Summer but has since normalized. Unfortunately, the C-reactive protein has remained high and has left the 30s. Congrats to me! C-Reactive Protein is 44-49 (I had another recent blood draw from my primary doctor, which was 49 then.)

Anyway, let’s quickly break down my blood results, which, according to Labcorp, are abnormal.

The first runner-up is RBC or Red Blood Cells. Technically, this is normal at 5.26 x10E6/uL but becomes moderately high at 5.29, so I feel I am pushing it. However, the good news is that hemoglobin is normal on the lower end of the halfway marker for the normal range, and Hematocrit is on the higher end for Normal. So this probably won’t mean anything to my doctors, who have yet to figure out why my C-reactive protein is high and going up with my symptoms worsening. There has been no real concern about diagnosing me or no big rush, anyway, and no treatment, of course, because how could there be any treatment with no diagnosis? So let’s just keep ordering the ambiguous CRP test and see where that gets us, right? (Sarcasm.)

Anyway, the next one that caught my attention: MCH is low at 24.7. Otherwise known as the average amount of hemoglobin found in the red blood cells in the body. This is not unusual for me, actually. My MCH and MCHC seem to like these low values. What I find strange is that they like these low values while my ferritin and hemoglobin tango in the realm of “normal.” MCHC, btw, is at 30.2 and is the average weight of hemoglobin based on the volume of red blood cells. A low MCHC value may be a sign of anemia or other conditions.

Ready for the next confusing thing concerning my red blood cells? My RDW is moderately high at 15.6, which isn’t unusual either, technically, since with these blood tests over the past five years, it has been staying around there. (Although so have my symptoms, albeit a milder form of them that wasn’t debilitating.) The RDW test measures the variation of size and volume of the body's red blood cells. Typically, red blood cells are relatively equal in shape and size - however, red blood cells can have a distorted shape or be smaller or larger than normal due to some health conditions and diseases. Low RDW values generally do not have clinical significance. Other than that, things were fine. However, some of the tests for liver function, damage, and disease are showing that I am starting to trend up. In other words, I am working my way toward liver damage or something with the gallbladder or kidneys. But it was no surprise since the CT scan revealed evidence of fatty tissue on my liver. But I’ll see a new primary doctor at the end of the month and await the dismissal of everything I am experiencing in favor of “Have you just tried losing weight? Or how about we staple your stomach at a young age even though eating isn’t your problem?” I’m not holding out hope for this new resident. The old one wasn’t very helpful, nor was the one before that. And on it goes. I am in my mid-twenties and can’t keep up with those my age because I am so sick. But sure, it is all the fat. Never mind the fact that the weight came after the symptoms started. I was always plus size, but I miss being XL. I want to be XL plus size again. I want to be able to live ffs. Let me be 100% clear: I am not fat-shaming or saying people larger than XL can’t live a normal life. They can. There are plenty of people larger than me who can outpace me. It’s just I have body image issues, and the weight is a detriment to me getting doctors to fucking listen. Or wear certain graphic tees that don’t run in my size. But, ya know, choose your battles or whatever.

And that’s why I’m screaming into this void. Because I want to live, but my body doesn’t, and it is absolute bullshit. It is such a sick fucking joke that growing up, I dealt with depression, no support for my autism, trauma, bullying, and wanting to die. And then, I get all healed and better. I have a will to live; I work on improving myself and growing. I want to go out in the world and contribute. But then my body becomes a new prison, and this time, I am absolutely held against my will because I can’t do anything to fix it! I don’t know why my abdomen is having digestion issues, cramping, bloating, and tenderness. I don’t know why I am dealing with costochondritis again and feeling my ribs in my body because I can feel the sting and the stab of the inflamed cartilage. I don’t know why my left leg is larger than my right. I don’t know why my neck and shoulders or my knees hurt. I don’t know why I am so unbelievably fatigued and why I also have a general feeling of just being ill. I don’t know why it hurts when someone applies the faintest pressure anywhere on my body. I don’t know why lying down to sleep, especially on my left side, makes my vagus nerve act like a little bitch so that I think I’m about to throw up right when I am almost asleep, and then I have to breathe calmly to calm it down as I feel the tingles of the nerves go down each arm. I can’t even walk for long without pain, my hip clicking, and the sickness in my gut reaching such an unbearable point of discomfort. Not to mention the costochondritis is making it really fucking hard to walk right now.

Because of all that is going on with my gut, vagus nerve, fatigue, and total body tenderness and aching, the last thing I needed was my rib cage to protest being a part of this body. I actually don’t eat that much now. I’ve always been a grazer. Lately, however, my grazing foods have also made me feel sicker. Eating makes me feel sicker. Water makes me feel sicker! My gut absolutely wants no part in what helps it to do its job. Which is, you know, FUCKING FOOD. I recently went on a trip to North Carolina and couldn’t do all the things I wanted to do because I was so ill.

So, let’s summarize what all this means. The TL;DR: I can’t fucking eat. I can’t fucking sleep. I can’t fucking breathe. I can’t fucking move. I can’t live my life to the fullest or go and do things I want to do because all the shitty and chronic sensations are building up and taking their toll. I can’t even get upset or excited or jump up and down, scream, or cry. That would make everything flare up. I think about killing myself several times a week despite not actually wanting to die. (So I have high doubts I will act on it, but at the rate my body is falling apart, I don’t know if I can say the same for it.) And doctors have no fucking idea what is going on, and I am so sick and tired of being SICK AND TIRED.

Really feeling Geralt's rage here. Need me a magic cure, man, because I cannot keep going on with this shit.

This is based on my theory that every game round played in South Korea was an actual loop that Penelope went through. After all, you have to have regressed a particularly horrifying number of times for your soul to shatter into irreparable pieces.

We're starting off by approximating the number of people who played "Daughter of the Duke - Love Project". In total, the SK gamer population is approximately 35 million, with 73.4% to 75% of the players being female. A bit of early multiplication shows that the number of female SK gamers is approximately 26.25 million.

I wasn't able to find a percentage for the number of South Koreans that play popular otome games, but I'm going to hazard a guess. In South Korea, 31.7% of the population are single households.

That means at least that percentage of people play romance genre games. I'm gonna be generous and move it up to 60%, just because you're in a relationship doesn't mean you can't play video games. Also, we have to keep in mind the teenagers who play these types of games.

Now, for more speculative calculations.

The clock in chapter 1, when Siyeon starts hard mode, is shown to be at 1:10 AM. The clock shown at the end, when Siyeon falls asleep, also the fact that she said "dawn was approaching", means that she stopped at approximately 6:34 AM. The time elapsed in total was 5.4 hours, also 324 minutes. 324 divided by Siyeon's number of attempts, 76, has an average of 4.263 minutes per attempt.

Seeing as Siyeon beat normal mode on all five routes on her first day, especially considering she's not much of a gamer type, we can surmise that people started playing Hard Mode on the first few days after release.

I will be basing "Daughter of the Duke - Love Project" on Mystic Messenger, one of the most popular otome games. Looking at the game on Google Trends and narrowing it down to South Korea, the game's popularity peaked two months after its release.

Using this comparison, we can speculate that "Daughter of the Duke - Love Project" has come out for approximately 2 months at the time of the first few chapters, especially since Siyeon's friend said that "It's the game that's all the rage now", and that it had been in all the ads.

Digging a little bit, some people online say that they play visual novels(which "Daughter of the Duke - Love Project" can be classified into) for 2-5 hours per day. I'm going to give an average estimate of 3.5 hours.

In summary. Multiply the number of female SK gamers by the estimated percentage of otome game players. Then, multiply them by 3.5 hours, which is 210 minutes. That's the daily average. Multiply that by two months, give or take, for the amount of estimated time for "Daughter of the Duke - Love Project" to reach peak popularity.

Take that number, and divide it by the average number of minutes played for each loop. In the end, add 76 for Siyeon's attempts. Round that up to a whole number. 4779304.

If we were to calculate, og!Penelope would've gone through 4.779304 million loops. Round that up to 4.8 million.

My two original, random-generated numbers(500 - 50 million) were 4.2 million and 5.6 million. I would say that it(the calculated number) is a pretty conservative number in between the generated ones.

HI IT’S ME AGAIN I JUST FINISHED S5 IT IS A BANGER

i have A Lot to say about this one because it’s very really good

i looked at the cast credits only on episode 10 and promptly found out that morro and lloyd have the same VA (at least in the dub i watched lmao). congrats julien haggege on the range because i geniuenly had no idea

SOOOO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT.

ok let’s start with what a great kickoff episode 1 was. everything went batshit RIGHT from the start. i love the scene w the possessed museum guard posing with a hammer behind lloyd. i loooooove how much they leaned into the whole ghost shit and horror tropes with morro’s introduction and lloyd just getting fucking possessed.

morro has like, more.. menace? than the previous villains (as much as any of them can be menacing for having little lego faces) because of his first appearance and also just. again the lloyd thing.

which is DELICIOUS btw to just take lloyd out of the team dynamic after he’s been so throuroughly integrated into it. holy shit man. it’s sooo good how the main four have to struggle without lloyd and how they each try to be the leader and fail horribly at it.

how this is resolved is great too!! the four of them work best without a leader. after cole gets turned into a ghost (also holy shit they really just did that), they kinda just stop picking fights over which of them is better and just stay a team. this is reflected beautifully in the episode 8, grave danger, where each of them takes charge when it’s best for them to do so. zane decodes the patterns on the doors, cole gets everyone to give up and fall, jay spots the light in the ground that gets them out of the labyrinth, and kai makes the final call to rescue lloyd. that’s some good shit.

ALSOOO this season is so good to nya!! i heard abt morro and nya’s water ninja thing and cole being ghosted on my ventures through the ninjago tag, but i didn’t expect it to be... all the same season. i did not.

i like a looot how nya’s weakness got cast here, because she’s always been just. good. at everything. and THAT’S HER WEAKNESS IT’S GIFTED KID SYNDROME. if she can’t get something right first try she gives up and that is an accurate weakness for her to have without betraying the strength she’s had throughout the show. she’s soo set on being a samurai that she Cannot fathom being a ninja and she has to get over herself. it’s so good. i like that one scene after cole gets ghosted where the two bond a bit over how their lives got turned upside down suddenly at the same time, and i also liked how she picking up on ronin’s laidback nature (which wu calls a bad influence) is actually what helped her out. she needed to take things less seriously so she can allow herself to fail without getting frustrated. THIS SEASON IS SO GOOD TO NYA FR.

ANOTHER THING ABT NYA i love how her development kinda mirrors like, the boys in season 1, with how everyone’s harping about her true potential, because that’s where she’s at, elemental powers wise. she is at her own personal season 1 right now, and it’s treated as such. sooo poggers. she had a lot of moments where she got held back by wu again (a recurring trend prior boooo wu) and she always had frustration at this (the only reason i accepted this) so i love love love how it’s SHE who sinks the. preeminent? is that the english name. (german dub calls it the Ur-Evil because it likes being stupid like that). it’s soo cool nya you’re cool again after s3.

THERE’S JUST. A LOT OF SEASON 1 PARALLELS IN GENERAL LIKE. morro’s obsession with being the green ninja is exactly like the boys in s1 and esp kai i think. like in s4 we saw that he’s still not entirely over that jealousy so morro feels in a way like a bad end kai even though he’s mostly played as a foil to lloyd. abandoned by fate vs chosen by destiny ysee ysee.

i get why so many people like him he has a LOT of potential esp since like his past connection to wu is just. haha wu you fucked up my man.

it SLAPS how morro just kept lloyd for Eight Whole Episodes. all ghosts can do possession and SOME of them do but for the most part it’s Just Morro who does which makes him stand out and the ninja not wanting to hurt lloyd in fights is fun. adds to him being so Goddamn Angry all the time. again same VA which i

morro as a villain also really adds to the whole theme of this season which is teamwork (as it often is) but this time in particular it’s how you can’t do everything alone. morro has his goons yeah but he ultimately is a loner and that’s capped off by him refusing to take wu’s hand in the final episode and going under. sayonara my man.

teamwork as the theme also came on strong again with (gestures at the main four struggling without lloyd and only moving forward once they work as a unit without a set leader). and maybe how ronin only manages to truly save his soul once he starts supporting the ninja without ulterior motives.

ronin was a rlly good supporting character imo! i think it’s funny how he’s introduced as having a past with the ninja who hate his guts meanwhile i’m going “should i know who this guy is?????” he’s not a bad guy necessarily just greedy but then the reason for him being greedy is introduced (sold his soul to a ghost and is trying to buy it back) and like it’s cool how his arc ends with him dumping all his money over morro’s head. it’s cool! also again his lil thing with nya which i’m sooo happy isn’t played romantic. nothing in this season is played romantic actually even that one scene i talked abt with nya and cole i’m so glad. love triangle is WELL AND TRULY DEAD AS IT SHOULD BE. let nya exist without a romance subplot for a season so epic so pog.

is it just me or did the lighting in the animation get wayyyy better this season? i was rlly impressed with the lighting on some shots this season which i haven’t been before. it’s way more realistic and when i first saw the waterfalls in nya’s training area i was stunned by the water physics in this. generally this season just looked really good by ninjago standards.

the set design was good too i liked the different locations. the ghost aesthetic clichees carried this i like that. wang’s house or the city of stiix or the cloud kingdom all vry cool good looking sets. i love how ham they went with the aesthetic too like also sound wise. the ost on this season is BANGER i love the remix for the intro. welcome to scooby doo: masters of spinjitzu.

MORE SEASON 1 THINGS I WANNA TALK ABT. there were some nice callbacks to the pilot eps i appreciated like the guys visiting the caves of despair where they found the scythe of quakes in the pilot. like if you didnt watch the pilot you’re not missing anything but if you did then you know and it’s nice <3 also hello morro’s skeleton. in any other show discovering a ghost’s corpse would be shocking but with the lego skeletons it’s just kinda goofy. it’s very goofy.

another callback i loved is in the final episode!! because morro tried to ditch lloyd in the underworld which is an amazing callback because it’s so thematically appropiate with the whole s1 parallels and that being where garmadon was sealed in the pilot and lloyd being ykno that guy’s son and the object of morro’s envy. it’s vry cool.

some cute things in the final two eps!! lloyd wearing his dad’s robe!! that’s so cute what the fuck!! i’m gonna gloss over the logistics of that just for how cute it is. previous cute thing is kai actually wearing the headband cyrus made for him even though he was bummed out for not getting a mech. everyone crashes their mechs and kai’s the one getting real utility out of his gift it’s cute. i thought the scene of ronin hanging out with skylor was also cute because like. skylor was in a veeery similar position to ronin where she betrayed the ninja for stupid selfish reasons but turned a new leaf and her giving him tea on the house is nice full circle stuff because her extending forgiveness on behalf of the ninja is what motivates ronin to go back and help out in the finale. and it’s tea specifically too because of the wu’s tea house subplot. that’s just so nice.

I DIDN’T EVEN PROPERLY TALK ABT GHOST COLE YET BECAUSE. THAT SURE HAPPENED. like i KNEW it was gonna happen cuz spoilers cuz i jzst wanted to look at fanart but. dang that’s kinda funny. like there is cole expressing sadness over it with the twice mentioned nya scene and many points where he tries to grab someone and fails but i think it’s nice how it’s not all bad and if he hadnt been a ghost then nimbus would’ve def killed the ninja right. i love how cole regularly like... forgets he’s a ghost. he forgets he can walk through walls and stuff now and possess things like ykno a ghost because it just kinda feels. in character for him to forget once he figures out how to make himself tangible. it’s funny. my favorite is in the ice labyrinth where he throws himself through a wall and slides across the floor to knock morro over.

he and kai got a lot of milage out of both being afraid of water this season. real bonding moment to make the guy who cant swim and the guy who will be vaporized if he touches water consistently the ones closest to water. kai gets a new gimmick to be grouchy about every season and i love that for him <3

talking abt kai again actually. love how he’s the one who ultimately saves lloyd and cheers on nya bcuz he’s. their big bro. he’s the first person who vowed to protect lloyd and by god he’s STICKIGN to that. i love that.

okay i think that’s everything i wanted to talk abt here. this is def my longest season review so far. because this season just SLAPS i understand now. i understand. this season fucks.
