“Laia, there's something I need to talk to you about,” Misa began, her voice soft yet resolute.

Laia looked up from her phone, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “What is it, Misa? Is everything okay?”

Taking a deep breath, Misa forged ahead, her words laced with unwavering support. “I've noticed how you look at her.” Misa didn't pronounce your name, but Laia knew exactly who Misa was referring to. “Laia. It's obvious that you look at her differently than you do at me, or at Jenni, for example. And I think it's time you tell her.”

Laia's heart skipped a beat at Misa's words, her cheeks flushing with a mixture of embarrassment and longing. “But what if she doesn't feel the same way? What if I make her uncomfortable? I don't want that. She's been my friend since we were kids. I don't know what I'd do if—”

Misa reached out and took Laia's hand in hers, her gaze steady and reassuring. "Laia, love is worth the risk. And if she truly cares about you, she'll understand and appreciate your honesty. You owe it to yourself to speak from the heart and finally be your truest self when you're with her. I've noticed how you remain less physical with her to prevent making her uncomfortable, or how you look at our other teammates when they hug her. Or how you get tense when she gives you a playful tap on the back of your head. Either way, I'm going to be by your side, whether you end up crying from sadness or from happiness."

Moved by Misa's unwavering support, Laia nodded, a newfound sense of determination coursing through her veins. With Misa by her side, she knew she could face whatever lay ahead.

The following day, Laia finally worked up the courage to confess her love to you. With shaking hands and a heart full of hope, she finally poured out her feelings in a moment of vulnerability and truth.

Pairings: F!Tav / Halsin Tags: N/A unless you count a bear popping a boner Word Count: 422 Summary: Scratch is missing. Halsin uses his bear to find him. Utter fucking shenanigans ensue. A/N: BAAHAHAAHAAHAHAAAHA Here's more of Blood and Honey from somewhere around chapter three. With Tav upon his back, the pair wandered away from the party and deeper into the forest. 

“Scratch! Here boy!”

Halsin growled, the rumble of it vibrating her bones. “Best to not,” He cautioned. “We do not know what hunts tonight. I will sniff him out.”

“Don’t you need a lock of his hair or a favorite toy or something?”

“Normally yes,” He answered. “But I don’t think I need to. This creature must be special to you for you to be so saturated with his scent. Did you raise him from a pup?” 

“I…no. I just met him a week or so ago.”

Halsin the Bear still had most of the faculties of Halsin the Elf. He could think and reason and plot and scheme. But the bear parsed the elf’s complex mortal emotions through a bear’s simpler lens. Therefore the admiration he felt at Tav’s devotion to her companion didn’t translate fully and came through as only the bear could make sense of it.

Hunger. 

And not the belly-filling kind.

On his back, Tav shifted and Halsin was made keenly aware she was sitting astride him.

Oak Father preserve me…

Halsin sniffed the air and did his damndest to filter Tav out. The bear noted, rather nonchalantly, that her scent told him she was young, healthy, and very fertile. 

Halsin snorted, hoping the action would expel that particular smell from his nose.

“Everything okay? I must smell terrible covered in all this mud, huh?”

“It’s not great,” he lied, realizing belatedly he just told a beautiful woman that she stank if only to avoid admitting to said beautiful woman that he could smell her ovulating and that it was driving him to distraction.

Halsin, if you don’t locate this dog right now!

“Sorry,” Tav muttered sheepishly. “I feel foolish even asking for your help. You’re an archdruid, it’s kinda beneath you to go looking for lost dogs.”

“It is precisely because I am an archdruid that I am duty-bound to assist. Finding lost dogs, especially ones so loved, are well within my charge.”

“Thank you,” Absent-mindedly, Tav reached forward and scratched behind his ears like did for Scratch and Kanid before him. The pleasurable sensation nearly dropped Halsin to his knees.

“Please, do not do that again!” He growled.

Tav snatched away. “I’m sorry!”

Tav wiggled, trying to get down from his back, rubbing her crotch against him, stirring up more of her pheromones as she blubbered apologies. “I’m so sorry! I totally forgot someone was in there!”

“Don’t move, do not…stop…Tav please…”

Suddenly, the bear scented blood replacing the hunger that made his loins ache with a new emotion.

Rage.

A/N: Now that I've better fleshed out a thornier section later in the fic, I have a feeling more snippets from earlier parts of the story will come at a decent clip. Tickletober Day 2: Drawn On

Fandom: Our Flag Mean Death

“Ehehehed!”

Stede couldn’t help but squirm against the ticklish point of the quill Ed was using on his ribs.

“You’re the one who said you wanted a “tattoo” and asked for my help, mate.” Ed tried to speak as evenly as possible.

“B-buhut you’re the one whohohoho s-suggested draw-ahaha! D-drawing it on my rihihihibs!” 

Ed couldn’t help but smirk and let out a smooth chuckle at that. “Okay, so maaaaybe I suggested drawing it here on purpose...thought it would make it more interesting. You’re just too ticklish for your own good, Stede!” 

Stede’s face flushed red at the teasing confession. Oh, this bastard. The tip of the quill was sending tingly zips all around the side of his ribcage and the affirmation of Ed knowing his ticklishness and also wanting to reduce Stede into a giggly puddle was too much. He had been trying so hard to keep his arms in place and not move too much in order to not mess up Ed’s drawing for him, but now that was being thrown out the window.

“Nahahahaa Ed!” In a playful attempt to stop him (not that he really wanted to), Stede started batting at Ed’s hand holding the pen. The tussle didn’t last long, however, as Ed was easily able to grab Stede’s wrists and pin the offending hands under his knees.

“Now, now, Stede...,” Ed tutted, “can’t have you trying to mess up an artist’s work! I wasn’t quite finished yet...”

Stede squealed as Ed brought the tip of the quill back in contact with his skin and began diverting course of his original drawing (a bow and arrow heart with “Ed” written in the center, of course) and started snaking it down Stede’s side.

“I think we need to add a little something here!” Ed then circled down to the jut of Stede’s hip. “And down here...oh!” Ed jumped the quill over to Stede’s other side. “You know what? We can make both sides match! And, hey! What about something here?”

Ed’s sudden movements all around his torso had Stede shrieking and gasping in surprise and his hips bucked with each new spot. But, if he was being honest, he was loving every second of it.

Ed smiled down at Stede, completely basking in the giggles and high pitched squeals as he used him as a canvas. A very ticklish canvas. Although, it wasn’t long before Ed was laughing along with him and setting the quill down to dive in with fingers and tickle Stede in ernest, “tattoo” forgotten.

I am told that today (April 17) is one of various suggested birthdays for Bruce. I'm not sure what the most canonical/plausible date is, but it's as good a day as any to read an old Batman issue that I picked up at an antique store quite a while ago. I keep forgetting I own it and only just read it tonight.

So...story time! Featuring Batman #422, August 1988.

Disclaimer: This story deals with some heavy topics, including murder, rape, violence, and prostitution. You have been warned.

This story, titled "Just Deserts," opens with an unexpected narrator, one Karl Branneck. He and his friend Vito Procaccini have just received a visit from Batman, and Vito is freaking out. Batman clearly suspects that these men are the "Dumpster Slashers" who raped and murdered ten women, so what will they do?

Branneck is unconcerned, except about the possibility of Vito's confessing to the crime. But he has a plan, which he won't detail to his partner, and he goes to detail his disgustingly misogynistic reasons for commiting these crimes.

The juxtaposition of Branneck's painting his crimes as something noble alongside Batman describing the horrific details of the rapes and murders and vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice is chilling.

Observe Robin (Jason) in the lower left panel above as Commissioner Gordon reminds Batman that he must work within the confines of the law. Jason is clearly unimpressed with this conversation, although he remains silent throughout.

Batman promises Gordon that he will do nothing out of line, that "I know the rules of the game," and he and Robin head out to trail the murderers, who have split up on the way to their meeting place.

Branneck is confident that he can shake Batman off his tail, although he has a moment of being unnerved by the sight of a woman who has been following him recently, silently staring at him. But he shakes this annoyance off and proceeds to lose Batman before descending into the subway.

He and Vito discuss committing one more murder, and when Vito asks who the target will be, Branneck pulls out a knife and stabs him to prevent the possibility of his confessing the crimes. Branneck is eager to continue murderering women, and he's determined to let nothing stand in his way. He leaves Vito's body on the subway tracks, where he believes that it will be too destroyed to identify the actual cause of death and it will have to be ruled as accidental. Telling himself that he's "home free," he hides the murder weapon under the floor boards of his apartment and goes out drinking.

When he returns, the floorboard is up, and Batman is waiting for him, holding the knife. Turns out Vito rolled himself off the tracks before actually dying, the train missed him, the cause of death was evident, and the knife is full of evidence sure to convict Branneck.

Three months later, in court, Branneck's lawyer contends that since Batman obtained the murder weapon, it was acquired illegally and thus cannot be used as evidence. The judge reluctantly agrees, the jury doesn't have enough evidence to convict, and Branneck gets off scot-free.

As he leaves the courthouse, gloating, he sees Batman and Robin watching him from a nearby rooftop, ominously.

Branneck plans to move out of Gotham City, but at the sight of the woman who had been following him earlier, he decides to commit another murder. He goes out and legally purchases a new knife and waits for the right time to strike.

Meanwhile, Jason goes after a pimp who is beating and trying to kill a prostitute for taking the night off because she doesn't feel well. Indignant at this injustice, Jason gets violent with the man.

Until Batman catches him and pulls him away, taking issue with Jason's apparent intent to kill the man. Jason doesn't see things the same way--wouldn't it be better to kill someone who has done evil things? Bruce doesn't further the discussion, but he has private concerns about his boy.

As the radio reports that Batman and Robin are occupied with a counterfeiting ring, Branneck sets out for his next murder. He corners the woman and tries to shove her into the back of his van, telling her that they're "going to party." "Like hell we are!!" she replies and pulls out a knife and slashes his throat.

Branneck stumbles around in disbelief, applying demeaning epithets to the woman, and having a vision of the ten women he killed surrounding him, reminding him of his crimes.

Branneck's last thought before he dies is "What did I ever do to deserve this?"

It doesn't take long to identify not only his body but the woman who killed him. She is Judy Koslosky, sister of Branneck's second victim, and she has been trying to get justice even before Batman took on this case. Her strategy was to get Branneck to target her as his next victim so she could get close enough to kill him.

The police are surprised by how unremorseful she is, but she contends, "I didn't kill a man. I put down a mad dog."

Bruce and Jason discuss this afterward. Jason agrees with Judy--that the right thing and the legal thing aren't always the same. But Bruce disagrees. He believes that no one can be above the law and that order is necessary for justice. Nevertheless, he has some sympathy for Judy's view. And that's how it ends.

The "Bat-Signals" letter page is entirely in reference to a storyline I haven't read, so I can't comment on it.

This issue is interesting because of the themes that it sets up which would continue to be expanded upon throughout the rest of Jason's time as Robin. He and Bruce are having ethical differences. Is it ever right to seek justice outside the law? Is it ever right to resort to violence or killing to avenge a wrong? What if the person in question did something really, really evil--is it ever right then? Two issues later would come the infamous story in which Jason may or may not have pushed a rapist with diplomatic immunity off a balcony. Four issues after #422, the "Death in the Family" arc would begin.

Jason's disagreements with Bruce do not occur abruptly; they're part of a slow buildup of frustrations, and this story is a piece of that.

What's the right answer? I appreciate that the narrative doesn't answer that. It leaves the reader to consider the question and reach a conclusion independently. This isn't a soapbox; this is an invitation to think over a complicated issue. And for this, I think I will remember this story for a while.

Confession is the telling of our sins to an authorized priest for the purpose of obtaining forgiveness. (Proverbs 28:13)

We must confess our sins because Jesus Christ obliges us to do so in these words, spoken to the apostles and to their successors in the priesthood: "Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." (John 20:22-23)
