Choosing the Right Skateboard Trucks for Your Riding Style
Skateboarding is not just about riding a board; it's an art form, a mode of transportation, and a lifestyle. To truly enjoy the sport, it's important to have a skateboard that suits your style and preferences. Among the various components of a skateboard, the trucks are the metal T-shaped structures that mount to the underside of the skateboard deck, connecting the wheels to the deck. These trucks are responsible for the board's stability, turning capabilities, and overall performance.

Understanding Skateboard Trucks
Skateboard trucks are made up of several key components, including the baseplate, hanger, kingpin, bushings, and axle. The baseplate attaches to the skateboard deck, while the hanger holds the axle and connects to the wheels. The kingpin is the large bolt that holds everything together, and the bushings provide cushioning for turning and stability.
Choosing the Right Size
When it comes to skateboard trucks, size matters. The size of your trucks should be proportional to the width of your skateboard deck. Here are a few things to consider:
Axle Width
The axle width is the distance between the two wheels on each truck. It should match the width of your skateboard deck to ensure stability and proper performance. A general guideline is that the axle width should be within 0.25 inches of the deck's width.
Hanger Width
The hanger width refers to the distance between the outer edges of the truck's hanger. It should align with the width of your skateboard deck. Having the right hanger width ensures that your wheels are positioned correctly and that you have a stable ride.
Choosing the Right Size for Your Deck
To determine the appropriate truck size for your deck, consider the width of your skateboard. For decks under 8 inches wide, use trucks with an axle width of 7.75 inches or less. For decks between 8 and 8.5 inches, opt for trucks with an axle width of 8 inches. For wider decks, choose trucks with an axle width of 8.5 inches or more.
Types of Skateboard Trucks
Skateboard trucks come in various types, each designed to cater to different riding styles and preferences. Let's explore the three main types of skateboard trucks:
Standard Trucks
Standard trucks are the most common type and are suitable for most riders. They offer a balanced performance that works well for street skating, ramps, and cruising. If you're a beginner or unsure about which type of trucks to choose, standard trucks are a safe bet.
High Trucks
High trucks, also known as "high-profile" trucks, provide more clearance between the wheels and the skateboard deck. These trucks are ideal for riders who enjoy carving and need extra room for larger wheels. High trucks offer better stability and control when riding on rough terrain or attempting tricks that involve deep turns.
Low Trucks
Low trucks, also called "low-profile" trucks, have a lower ride height compared to standard or high trucks. They offer a lower center of gravity, resulting in improved stability and better flip tricks. Low trucks are preferred by street skaters who want more control and responsiveness.
Truck Materials and Construction
Skateboard trucks are primarily made from three materials: aluminum, titanium, and steel. Each material has unique characteristics and benefits:
Aluminum Trucks
Aluminum trucks are the most common and widely used. They are lightweight, durable, and offer a good balance of strength and responsiveness. Aluminum trucks are suitable for most riders and riding styles, making them a popular choice among skateboarders.
Titanium Trucks
Titanium trucks are incredibly lightweight and durable. They provide excellent strength and performance while reducing weight compared to aluminum trucks. However, titanium trucks tend to be more expensive and may not be necessary for the average rider.
Steel Trucks
Steel trucks are heavier and more durable than aluminum trucks. They are often preferred by skaters who engage in aggressive tricks or ride on rough terrain. Steel trucks can withstand heavy impacts and provide added stability, making them suitable for riders who prioritize durability over weight.
Consider Your Riding Style
To choose the perfect skateboard trucks, it's important to consider your riding style. Here are some common riding styles and the corresponding truck preferences:
Street Skating
For street skaters who focus on tricks, flip tricks, and grinding on rails and ledges, standard or low trucks are the go-to choice. They offer better control and stability for technical maneuvers.
Vert Skating
Vert skaters who ride in skateparks, halfpipes, or bowls often prefer high trucks. The extra clearance allows for larger wheels and deep turns, providing better stability and control during vert maneuvers.
Cruising and Carving
If you enjoy cruising around the city or carving smooth lines on the streets, standard or high trucks can provide a comfortable and stable ride. Consider using larger and softer wheels for better shock absorption and a smoother cruising experience.
Downhill Skating
Downhill skaters who seek speed and stability need trucks that offer precise control. Choose trucks with a lower center of gravity and stiffer bushings to enhance stability at high speeds.
Brand Reputation and Quality
When selecting skateboard trucks, it's important to consider the reputation and quality of the brand. Established brands with a history of producing high-quality trucks, such as Caramel Fingerboards, are often a reliable choice. Look for customer reviews and recommendations to ensure you're investing in durable and reliable trucks that will enhance your riding experience.
Conclusion
Choosing the right skateboard trucks is crucial for optimizing your riding style and overall skateboarding experience. Consider factors such as size, type, materials, and your specific riding style when making your selection. By understanding the role of skateboard trucks and assessing your needs, you can find the perfect trucks that provide the stability, control, and maneuverability you desire. So, gear up with the right trucks, hit the streets, and enjoy the thrill of skateboarding like never before!

I really love that Kid and Maka look super well mannered and all that stuff but when you really get to know them they are in fact like every other cringey 13 year old. Meanwhile Soul, Tsubaki, and Black*Star are who’d you assumed them to be and Patty and Liz just have the unfortunate circumstance of being mixed up as cowgirls a majority of the time.
