Explosions rumbled and heat swelled behind him, but Wriothesley couldn’t afford to look back to make sure that the Iudex was still standing. He barely had the time to think, legs pounding, arms pumping, driven by instinct alone. Close enough now to see the smoke curling from the holes in the Ruin Guard’s back, his hands curled into fists, encased once more by his trusty boxing gloves. All that mattered was that he put this thing down for good.

Suddenly water gushed from beneath it. Kicking up dirt and grass, Wriothesley skidded to a stop and squinted against the spray. A smirk crossed his lips. Of course, he didn’t have to worry about the Iudex.

”Just the opening I was looking for!” He called, stepping forward with his left foot, and striking out with his right fist. Frigid air blasted from the glove’s exhaust vents as a wall of cryo shot ahead, instantly freezing any water it touched, encasing the ruin guard in sharp spikes of ice before it could hit the ground. He sprinted to close the distance, knowing he only had a second or two to make it count.

Left jab. A crack fissured in the ice. Right fist smashed down right on top of it, shattering the icy prison with such force that metal folded and in an arc of sparking wires, the automaton finally collapsed into a useless heap. Panting, Wriothesley shook his arms out, gloves disappearing into thin air, and cautiously stepped closer. The machine whirred and groaned, its eye flickering, its bent limbs scrabbling weakly for purchase, until it finally sighed and went quiet.

Wriothesley wicked the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. The valley was unnervingly quiet in the wake of so much destruction. Not even birds sang from the distant trees.

“That’s the last of ‘em.” Glancing over his shoulder, relieved but not surprised that Neuvillette waited some distance behind, evidently unharmed, Wriothesley turned back to cross the ravaged field over to him again. As harrowing as the experience had been, excitement glowed on his face. One might be able to guess how he’d won so many scars over the years.

“Not bad, Monsieur Iudex,” he said a little cheekily. Who else would compliment Fontaine’s leading authority as if the power he wielded was a surprise? Wriothesley liked to balance the serious with the light where he could, especially when threat of life was no longer an issue. Still catching his breath, he set his hands on his hips and surveyed the damage. Streaks of churned earth, burnt grass, crumbled cliffs, toppled trees, but nothing permanent, and no one had died.

“Shipments should return to schedule now. Do you have any idea where these things might’ve come from?”
