My taste 3x3x3 because I find it fun

I drew this on July 7th. Summer has started, on June 21 to be precise, and it's certainly time for sports, and this year the Olympic Games are coming and it's time for games and sports. I started with basketball, more precisely with basketball 3x3, where it is played in three players as one team and I drew my favorite characters that would surely play as good basketball players as one team. Louie Duck, Gosalyn Mallard and Max Goof as teenagers are great at basketball and seemed like a team in my version and that's why I drew them. Yeah, I haven't drawn Max Goof in a long time so I drew him combining from Goof Troop and a Goofy Movie and where he's pretty tall and the same age as Louie Duck and Gosalyn I drew in my Quack Pack version. My only apology is that it turned out a little bad, I was in a hurry. And that I drew them all together to have blue eyes, even though I know Gosalyn has green eyes. I did it for my own reasons. I hope you like it.

All the while he was in teen titans and young justice. His best friend died. He did cloning experiments? He watched Santa die?? He traveled the multiverse several times? Stephanie was pregnant at some point? He dated so many girls? His future self is evil and loves to psychologically torment his present day self? He’s gunbatman?????? He was trapped in a 3x3 cell for months and everyone assumed he died and moved on??? His boyfriend is in a cult???

When did you have the time Tim? When?

I know this timeline isn’t 100% accurate but it is the history of at least 3 comic runs told from memory

Sure. I'm going to be answering @slugcat-in-gundam's ask too because they sent it at a similar time with a similar question:

I use GIMP for all image editing, besides occasional Lunapic.com usage. I did an FAQ on this on another gimmick blog a while back but I do different things here sometimes so I'll redo it anyways.

I got a higher quality version of your picture so the compression will be more noticable:

All the compression done on this blog favors aesthetics over functions, which is why there's extreme dithering on everything: dithering isn't really something that's used at all anymore but I like how it looks.

The main process is really just scaling the image down with linear interpolation to something between 64-256 pixels on the short side, and using Gimp's feature of letting you clamp an image to indexed colors, specifically with Floyd-Steinberg dithering on. If there isn't dithering, the picture will look like this:

Then I just check the sizes they export at and post the image and that's it.

If I want to make the image comically small and impossible to discern, I'll keep it as a jpeg and turn the quality way down at a tiny size:

Which will end up looking like this.

There are other techniques used sometimes, mainly on the #win98 pictures and #gba pictures.

With the win98 pictures, I scale them down to 320x240 or 160x120 every time and clamp the colors to the windows base palette, usually saturating the image before since the dithering doesn't look great otherwise. Look how this picture looks without vs with extra saturated colors:

I forgot to mention before so I'm just jamming it here, but I'll also replace text in the font 3x3 mono if it's too small to be readable to keep the image legible sometimes. You'll notice this being done with fine print and watermarks sometimes:

Lastly, with the GBA pictures, it's about the same process but I just clamp the colors down to a number that the dithering is noticeable while the image is at the gba resolution. I never noticed until making this tutorial, but there's a positioned option for dithering too which I'll probably start using for these gba posts.

The Bad Shipping Fic Bingo!

What is a fic bingo?, you may ask. Well, you will receive a bingo card. Instead of numbers, there will be prompts or ships. Your goal is to include as many of these as possible in any fanfictions you write, mark them off and maybe even get a bingo!

There is no limit to how many fics you can write, or how many prompts should appear in each fic. Don't take it too seriously! How did you learn to do comic formatting? Did you follow a tutorial? Or are you more self-taught. Do you use comic book page templates or no?

Self taught. I have no formal art schooling. I like to read a lot of manga and enjoy when the pages are like pictures in their own right, and the panels help draw the readers' eye. I like to make them part of the story, too.

I draw everything in Procreate on my iPad, so the base is eyeballed from page to page. If I need a page that isn't the standard 3x3 blocks of stuff happening, I draw the art and characters without any panels, then draw the panels after everyone is in place for those wacky, dynamic panels.

Onyx did cut right through one of the panels in episode 3, too. Utterly destroyed them, and then weird stuff started happening to the format. All depends on how Onyx is feeling, I guess.

Gonna share how I set up my comics. After writing a script--which is mostly dialogue, character actions and visuals, rarely 'properly' formatted or broken up with page length or lay out in mind--I do 'thumbnails' which are really just doodles of whatever size that get the 'jist' of each beat of the script. I don't think about page layout at this stage, either, I'm just worried about capturing roughly what I had in my head when I was getting stuff written out.

Then I take the thumbnails and scale them down and start constructing pages out of them. There's a LOT of ways you can format a comic, but I stick to a rough 3x3 grid layout as, like, the most busy I'm willing to make a page. This is what I mean;

I can use UP TO 3 horizontal frames interrupted UP TO 3 times vertically for a total of 9 frames per page. For hanahaki, it was a 2x2 grid for simplicity. Really, cannot recommend enough, if comic layout intimidates you, throw it away. Limit yourself to a simple grid and don't deviate. Your story only needs complicated layouts if you decide it does. Anyway, with that template in mind, I start plugging in thumbnails and giving them frames.

here I stopped at 5 pages bc who knows, my brain might implode and this project may die, so we're starting small.

The next step is to copy over the thumbnails and resize them for a full page. The last step of layout is putting in my rough estimates of where the dialogue/narration will go;

bc if there's one thing that will fuck up a perfectly good frame composition, its realizing you have to put a fucking speech bubble in there. I try to be generous bc I prefer fairly large text for my comics--as I myself am Fucking Blind--and it can be a hell of a tightrope, esp when you intend to do a chatty, floaty head comics like me. This is another reason I prefer to keep that 9 frames limit on my layouts bc there's only so much space for those talky bits.

For hanahaki, I tended to cheat a lot so you'd get a lot of pages where the speech bubbles were way outside the bounds of the page, which has made formatting later a huge pain and I'm trying to be better.

Ultimately, you just don't want to cover ppls faces. Unless you do, for the storytelling of it all.

9/25, 9/26, 9/27/2009 Wheel Spins: Parent Bad :(, Captchalogue Lore, Dramatic Irony Verdict: ❌ NO LONGER RELEVANT ❌

Gonna say something controversial but true: Can Town needs more cans. WV keeps introducing non-can elements, such as ‘roads’ and ‘trees’ and ‘splodgy chessboard’ and it’s just not very can-focused anymore. It is still the most adorably charming way to deliver a major lore dump that I have ever seen, and so deeply cryptic.

WV visually talks us through the cosmology of Sburb in a very similar way to Nannasprite a few hundred pages ago. Of course, WV was listening to Nannasprite’s exposition, so could be recreating what they’ve heard – but it seems like they have extra information, too. This Nannasprite lore is the part of the comic I most often go back to and reread so I guess grandmotherly wisdom is real.

NANNASPRITE: One [orb] goes down, to a kingdom entrenched in darkness. The other, up, to a kingdom basking in light! (p.424)

These kingdoms basking in light and darkness are definitely the ‘luminous planet’ (p.702) and ‘ominous planet’ (p.704) WV draws, although Nannasprite doesn’t mention any moons, and WV is certain of these. The ominous planet is ‘beyond an impenetrable veil of darkness’, which is what John sees when he gazes into the abyss below his house. Presumably the luminous planet is something he will reach on his way to Skaia if he begins to build up through the gates – since the forces of light are charged with Skaia’s protection.

NANNASPRITE: [The Medium] is where we are now! A realm that is a ring of pure void, dividing light and darkness. (p.421)

The four planets without satellites WV draws (p.703) are part of the Medium – more specifically, I think that small parts of these planets have been transported to the Medium. The lower left planet looks like Earth being hit by a giant meteor, so, could the other three be planets that have been destroyed by Skaian technology in different ways? The red planet (Mars?) has been enveloped by a large gray dust storm while the colorful planet and the black planet (Venus and Mercury?) both have strange clouds in orbit. If the Incipisphere is a realm that’s not part of Earth or its flow of time, it makes sense that other planets would be affected by it too, and that other planets with intelligent life might try to draw on Skaia’s power if they discovered it. Four planets, and four screens on WV’s monitor.

I think Rose and Dave are definitely from the same Earth as John but I could totally believe that GG is from a different planet. Rose’s ‘So, shall I expect a green package dropped to my house via airmail from whatever screwball cranny of the globe you're tucked into?’ becomes a great line if GG is not from this globe at all. So, maybe WV figuring out how to view other screens on the monitor is our lead-in to actually meeting GG and discovering what’s up with her.

NANNASPRITE: The Four Spires are situated above a throne, and these two thrones preside over the two respective Sovereign Powers! (p.424)

These Sovereign Powers must be the kings that WV detests so much. On this same page, the animation shows a chessboard – first a 3x3 with just the white and black kings, but as the orbs reach the spires of the light and dark kingdoms, the chessboard becomes a 12x12 (bigger than a standard chessboard) with a whole bunch of extra pieces, which roughly – but not perfectly – correspond to the pieces on an actual chessboard. This is the ‘stage’ that the forces of light and darkness duel on, and is clearly a place WV has either spent time in or spent time watching, because the chessboard is ‘the only logical pattern that occurs to [them]’ (p.697). So WV was in combat? Or possibly had someone close to them who was in combat, since they don’t seem designed for violence, and were forced to lose that person to this war?

NANNASPRITE: This is a war that the forces of light are always destined to lose, without exception! (p.424)

This line hits a little different after meeting WV. They would have won the war. Their side was fated to succeed, but something was important enough to them that they betrayed their king and their planet and voluntarily resigned themself to wandering in rags? I really think they have a more complicated history than we’re let in on right now. There’s a trope I’ve seen in books and movies where a child who has been through something traumatic doesn’t talk about it, but a teacher or carer figures it out through art the kid has drawn. I don’t know how based in reality this trope is, but I’m thinking about it in the way the ‘ominous planet’ is hidden behind pipes and coils of rope and massive messy smears of motor oil, compared to the lovingly crafted clouds of the rest of the scene.

Also, my can research paid off, because I am 99.9% sure that the mayonnaise (the only food from WV’s stash not found canned in real life) was put there so that they could make the ‘MAYOR’ sash. Planted because the (likely reader-submitted) commands ‘Clear out all the cans inside the purple machine’ (p.681) and ‘Become the mayor of Can Town’ (p.685) fit so well together. I kinda love the thought of three people’s brains in different places momentarily being on the exact same wavelength and creating this cute moment.

Short comics I drew for uni with my OCs – Plamena (with darker hair, her family immigrated from Bulgaria) and Sonya (lighter hair, was asked to help Plamena adjust) (translation/explanation under the cut, I didn't translate the comics themselves bc with some it's literally impossible)

These aren't in the order in which the tasks were given

1 – the task was to make a comic using 3x3 grid and static camera. Music is Baby Don't Dance by Mother Mother (see what I did there???)

2 – the task was to use sounds and a, like, more complicated grid that doesn't have a name. I hope it's obvious what the sounds mean, and the one speach bubble says "Well, at least it can't get worse" (I took some creative liberties with this translation)

3 – we had to draw 5+ iterations of the character in one space

4 – Had to use vertical/horizontal grid. It's just one person speaking, so monologue:

"Sonya, here you are! This is your new classmate, Plamena. She recently moved here with her parents from Bulgaria. Plamena knows the language pretty well, but she still needs some help to catch up with the program. And, well, you're always alone, it would be good for you to make a friend. You also happen to be the best in languages in the class. /next part is hand-written in white/ Can you help her with studying?"

4 – Oh boy, this is one of those impossible to translate. Let's start with the simple part, the task was to draw a dialogue and use different compositions to make it look less boring, and put it in a grid that goes in lines of the same height.

So, why can't I translate it? Bc this is an explanation of Bulgarian tenses by Plamena, who's native language is Bulgarian, for Sonya, who's native language is Russian, done mostly in Russian language (and compared to Russian tenses) except for several times when Plam accidentally starts speaking Bulgarian. Both are slavic languages written in cirrylics, so there are some similarities between them. Plamena's phrases in Russian are also spoken according to the way the same sentences would be structured in Bulgarian, and she avoids the forms of words that don't exist in Bulgarian. There are only three tenses in Russian, so when Plamena, after explaining three of Bulgarian tenses, says that she will explain the other six next time, Sonya is very surprised that there are that many. I don't know who my target audience is except for myself.

5 – this one is a sequel bc Bulgarian tenses deserve it. The task was to use frames that, like... go over/under grid. Anyway I can directly translate this one.

Plam: It's locked in here.

Sonya, after some time: What are you looking at?

Plam: Nothing.

Sonya: You sound suspicious, let me see!

The phone interface is in Bulgarian, the first result is Wikipedia. The search is "tenses in Bulgari-" (it cuts off)

Sonya: You don't understand them yourself!

Plam: Nobody understands them!

Moral of the story is I don't understand them.

6 – The last five are all one task to use five types of frame-to-frame transitions listed in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. Most are without dialogue, but the one that is... Yes, it's another untranslatable one. Ъ in Russian is a letter that doesn't have a sound and only affects the letters that surround it. In Bulgarian, however, it's a vowel with a very distinct sound. Here, Plamena tries to tell Sonya how to say it, but Sonya doesn't get it and gives her a million of completely different sounds. Again, I don't know who my target audience is except for myself. Well, here it also is everyone that I've put in Sonya's position over the years, they get it too.
