This is the first review I have made of a Marvel story. Historically I have been solely a DC reader and havent ventured into the Marvel universe. This all ends with the start of ComicStylings in 2017 as I read more broadly trying to hopefully engage with other readers meaningfully. With the start of a new run, Gamora #1 I thought this might be a nice little story arc to get stuck into. I enjoyed the character depicted in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I found her interesting and wondered about her origin story. . Ultimately however I came away from this first issue disappointed. I hoped, with Gamora the central focus this would allow time for serious character development, but their is none here. Nicole Perlman gives us a basic, worn out, old revenge plot as a means to get to a violent series of panels showcasing the characters fighting ability. . Small attempts are made to delve into her psyche but are on the whole very rudimentary in my view. The interaction with her 'sister' Nebula is similarly basic and even juvenile at times. I was left quite unsatisfied. . As for the art the rendering of the reptilian Badoon race is detailed and the attention paid here is commendable. However, their is a blue tinge to the majority of the panels which I find hard on the eyes and made for a difficult read. . There is an opportunity here to open up Gamora to new readers giving her real depth of character, taking us on a new journey with someone whom, I get the impression, has spent most of their life as an ensemble member and not a stand alone. However on that point I may be wrong, just an impression from a new reader. .
