Hey! :) I’ve really been wanting to get into reading comics but I have no idea where to start 🥲
Do you have any recommendations or references for how to start reading about different dc characters? I mainly want to start reading about batman and the rest of his clan but I want to branch out to other characters as well
hi!! i've gotten this question a lot and i'm so sorry it's taken me so long to answer all of y'all! but i wanted to make sure if i made a list, it would be with the best references i could find, and that it made sense for even a beginner
what i've found is that... there's apparently no right answer? mostly, you'll find people recommending you to start with their favorite collections, like Batman: Hush, etc etc. from what i've been able to tell, getting into comics is about choosing one that sounds the most interesting to you, and going from there. if you like the collection you've picked up, then someone will recommend another collection, so on. a lot of people recommend that you start with a certain character, someone that you really like. so if Tim Drake is calling to you like many... many people, then you can find a reading guide for him and pick and choose from a collection. like this one from this blogger that helped me. one of my favorite characters is Cassandra Cain (though I don't write her as often, which kind of happens when I really like a character?). she has a Batgirl run!! Batgirl #1. (((please note that this link takes you to readallcomics.com, which you should use an adblocker for if you want to use this website. however!! it is very different from readcomics.com))) look how cool she is!!
Tumblr media
however I personally like to try and read in chronological order because I don't like missing out on anything. in my search, i found an amazingly ordered, extensive website called comicbookherald.com
i started using this because they have a list in chronological order for many, many, many characters in the DC universe:
https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/
one of the very first options on this list is Batman (listed in alphabetical), and when you click on him, you'll find exactly what you're looking for:
https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/batman-reading-order/
Tumblr media
the links on the actual titles in the list will take you to Amazon to buy the comic, but there are other ways to find these comics either online (like seen above with Batgirl #1) or through your local library (recommended). if your library doesn't have them, you might be able to find them at a nearby one or you can ask the librarian how a request works. they'd probably be happy to get it for you (support your local libraries!!!) you might find that you prefer going to a comic shop, and that's great too
i also looked up the publication history of the Batman comics using Wikipedia, just to make sure that I knew what i was doing, and i started with the very first on the list: Detective Comics #27. this is Bruce Wayne/Batman's very first appearance.
i also found some helpful videos that i personally have tried to follow:
"BATMAN 101: A GUIDE TO HELP YOU START READING BATMAN COMICS!" by History of the Batman
"Where to Start Reading Batman Comics | Best Batman Comics for Beginners in Collected Editions!" by Near Mint Condition
the issue is that it's pretty hard to read all of the characters at once and stay in order, which means you'll probably want to stick to reading one character at a time and piecing it together like that. but if you're feeling brave, i'd cross reference the years and publication history and go by the order of when each character shows up: start by reading Batman, and when Dick Grayson appears, look up his list and see how the publication history looks, and i guess start trying to read them side by side? the same would go for when Jason appears, then Tim, etc etc. but this might be VERY difficult, so i am very much recommending beginners to start by reading Batman's and branch out from there
my personal favorite right now is Batman & Robin: Year One because Dick Grayson is in it and he's so cute here in his Robin days
edit: adding on this ask i got about hoopla

Webcomic Recommendation: Muted ♡
Tumblr media
Summary: "It has been thirteen years since the mysterious fire at the Severin family manor that killed Camille’s mother and twin sister, and the last thing Camille wants to do is return to her old home deep in the swamps of Louisiana. But she doesn’t have a choice. Deeply ingrained family tradition and Matriarch Athalie—Camille’s coldhearted aunt and head of the Severin household—demand it.
When the time comes for Camille to perform the demon-summoning blood ritual that every prospective matriarch in her family must complete, she is afraid of making a mistake. No matter how hard she tries to be a witch worthy of the Severin name, nothing is ever good enough for her aunt. Camille has practiced and practiced, but instead of the beat of demonic wings or the snap of talons, her blood calls forth evergreen vines and leaves. Terrified of what this might mean, she flees into the swamp.
But her failed ritual gives her something precious: time away from Aunt Athalie. Time to spend with her beloved familiar Toben and kindly cousin Silvia. And—unbeknownst to her—time to fall in love, discover the truth of her magic, reunite with long lost family, work through her grief, and solve the mystery of who killed her mother and sister."
Distributer: Ten Speed Graphic
Source: Webtoon
Creator: Miranda Mundt (@miranda-mundt-art )
Genre: Supernatural, Drama
CW: Contains themes of abuse, child abuse, and suicidal ideation
Status: Completed (125 episodes)
Personal Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️

Mind scans in 2021 show that Jean Grey's telepathy is a 7 or off the scale, meaning she has nearly infinite telepathic energy. Meanwhile, she is not even at the peak of her power yet and has been displaying high powers proving her place in the telepath range
At the same time, mind scans are the strongest evidence that Jean Grey is the most powerful telepath

How am I supposed to find indie webcomics? I’m up-to-date on a handful of them and love them all but I’m just not sure how to find new ones. Most searches for webcomics lead you to the mainstream sites.
I mean mainstream sites are fine in and of themselves if you're following the series you like there (especially if the creators of those comics are trying to opt into things like Ad Rev), but if you're wanting to find stuff outside of Webtoons and Tapas, here are some other methods to do so:
Random Webcomic - About as unbiased as you can get, literally sends you to the website for a comic it pulls at random. All comics in the roulette are user-submitted so for the most part, they're all still active or at least have live sites. Sometimes you'll find the odd broken link tho ;0
Top Webcomics - A collective of webcomics competing for top spots. Offers plenty of ad space where people advertise their comics whether or not they make it to the top of the voting pool. And has genre listings you can browse if competitive listings aren't your thing.
The Webcomic List - A collection of webcomics submitted by users that are then crawled by the site's bots to check for new updates. It has a list for most recently updated, but also sorts by genre. Definitely one of the most "old school" listings to exist.
SpiderForest - A jury-picked collection of webcomics. Once every year or two they open submissions where people can pitch their new or ongoing comics - if they're picked, they get a special listing and features on the site, and can either have their existing website affiliated with SF branding or have a new site created for them by the staff. It's all non-profit and it mostly serves as a community of creators and readers, they are not a publisher, but they offer a wide variety of titles.
Hiveworks - Similar concept to SpiderForest except they're an actual publisher so they offer even more benefits to their selected creators including print deals and merchandising, but as such they're way harder to get into. Their submissions have been closed for a VERY long time but they offer a wide array of comics that typically appeal to general-audiences (i.e. there are no NSFW comics AFAIK).
GlobalComix - A platform that, while not new anymore, has been making strides in competing with platforms like Webtoons and Tapas. Has a lot of Western-style comics but their library variety has been growing and I'm pretty sure they're planning on releasing an app soon (if they haven't already).
ComicFury - The final frontier of old school early 2000's webcomic platforms. Run by one guy, this site allows for full HTML/CSS customization, domain hosting, and all those fun little things from an era long gone by. The front page sorting is set to "Recently updated" by default so there's no algorithm bullshit, no editors playing favorites, just classic 2000's era reading.
As a final note, the best part about browsing for comics that have their own sites is that they usually include listings of other comics that are similar to their own. Sites like Tamberlane will often have roulettes of other recommended comics that you can sift through.
There are plenty other comic aggregation sites out there too, of course, but these ones should help you get started if you're looking for other platforms and archives that aren't subject to corporate scrubbing or picky algorithms. It helps decentralize the Internet just a little bit more and rejuvenate what made webcomics so amazing in the first place - independent ownership, accessibility, and unapologetic existence.
Enjoy! <3

how do you suggest getting into batfamily comics? i’m pretty new to the fandom :)
If you’re into the fun fluffy family stuff then the WFA webtoon and Dustin Nguyen’s Li’l Gotham are really good. Then if you’re a BTAS fan the Batman Adventures series takes place in that continuity. A lot of stuff when the CCA was active has that goofy fun batman content that is kinda day to day. Also DCs early like YA graphic novels like Oracle Rising, Poison Ivy Thorns, The Lost Carnival are good for if you want one-shot easy reads in their own universes.
Obvi there are the classic BATMAN stories that don’t focus as much on the family, but can contextualize and are good. So books like Year One, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Killing Joke, and Hush. Then there are more old school classic batfamily comics like Death in the Family, Under the Red Hood, Batman Inc, Batman Who Laughs, and City of Owls. For these, if you don’t have the patience to read, DCAMU has stellar animated movie adaptations.

A Simple Guide On How To Read The Incredible HULK
HULK Grey
Vols 1-6
• Goes over the HULKS origin

• The best origin for the HULK

Tales To Astonish
Vols 90-91

Incredible HULK
Vols 180-181
• Introduces Hulks rivalry with wolverine
• Also Wolverines first appearance
Peter David HULK run
Vols 331-467
• Foundational to the hulk
• Establishes Bruce’s mental health
• Establishes Bruce’s other personalities
• Most important Hulk run
Incredible HULK
Vols 472 - 474
• Revivals the truth about what happened to Betty
• Shows the rivalry between HULK and the ABOMINATION
Planet HULK
INCREDIBLE HULK #88-95
Giant Size Hulk vol 1
Incredible Hulk 96-105
• Shows that Hulk and Bruce can co exist
• Shows more tragedy from the HULK
World War HULK
Vols 1-5
• Sequel to planet hulk
• Shows how hulk is far from humanity
SKIP 1
Skip a lot because it’s kinda bad and there is a lot of creative choices that are just straight up not it. Frank Cho (the artist for most of the stuff I’m skipping) is a gross creep who over sexualizes all the female characters to the point of no return. All you need to know is that Red Hulk is General Ross and Red She Hulk is Betty Ross
SKIP 2
Civil War 2
This comic is straight ass there is no point in reading it except for the art maybe. All you need to know is that Hawkeye technically kills Bruce Banner and the hulk. Seriously don’t read this it’s annoyingly infuriating
Immortal HULK
Vols 1-50
• Most emotional hulk run
• Goes into everything from the hulks past
• Shows the horror and tragedy of the hulk while also showing the power of it
Phillip Kennedy Johnson HULK run
Vols 1-on going
• Newest HULK run
• Not going to say anything because it is new but it’s pretty much just more of immortal hulk but less ( that sounds like an insult but that’s actually a compliment)
