Context of the Columbiahalle concert venue

This page goes more into depth on the context behind the place itself as well as the event, which gives me more ideas for what I can try to communicate and what themes I can focus on. This overall has given me a range of emotions, themes and starting points to work on as well as remind me of an array of films, shows and hobbies which I have an interest in that remind me of the context behind this performance.

Researching into the event and the venue, it was opened in 1951 for American entertainment during the Berlin Wall, which gave me ideas for retro qualities which I can expand upon. With a capacity of 3,500, it has a sense of exclusivity and always being a source of entertainment and overall, it creates for people a source of escapism and energy.

Exploring Zedd’s concerts, his main focus is visually interpretating music visually to create a range of scenes of surreal environments which expands on the surreal feeling that I felt there which is a topic I am deciding to take further. It also expanded on the idea of sci-if which links to the Marvel franchise which I can explore in depth to get some more research. The motion for the lasers as well as the fast paced atmosphere is a key feature in his concerts. As well as looking at visual qualities, it is important to explore qualities of sound and motion of the special effects.

Researching into the actual designer of Zedd visuals, Mike ‘Beeple’ Winklemen is a graphic designer that creates digital artwork for a range of sources and has worked with a range of musicial artists as well as Zedd. Imagine this; being immersed in a concert full of a range of landscapes. And that is what Winklemen created. In Zedd’s True Colors documentary Winklemen stated that ‘What Zedd was looking for in a concept was that is is loose enough to allow a lot of different variation but, strong enough to tie everything together. He was looking for these sort of rooms, something that would give a 3-D depth to a flat 2-D space”, “They’re all seperate sort of worlds.” And Anton ‘Zedd’ Zaslavaski further elaborated on that with saying there is a “fire world” and then you are “in an ice world. Then a spaceship, underwater” and more. These surreal environments, give me something to expand on as well as focusing on the energy of the environments as well as the concert itself. These visuals are heavily exaggerated in colour, energy and context to enhance the energy of the concert with movement to the beat of the song to feel like you are travelling through them, to immerse yourself further.

Interview with Kostas, mentor of the EVS Volunteers and the coordinator of the Open Training at CABUWAZI  (interview by Aaron)

Kostas is since more than 10years one of the mentors for the EVS Volunteers at CABUWAZI, supporting their integration, guiding them on their learning path and helping out in every possible challenge. 

The Open Training is happening every Monday between 19-21h at CABUWAZI Tempelhof, Columbiadamm 84, Berlin - everyone is welcome to join and develop his/her circus skills in a nice atmosphere of a circus tent, supporting each other to learn, play and grow together

Why did you start the open training? 

We first started the open training in a squat 15 years ago, when the squat closed we wanted a space to continue training together. I approached CABUWAZI  to see if they were able to host the space and for a small fee we could use the circus tent to train.’

What effect has it had on the volouteers?    

‘It's a space to try out.. experiment with different circus disciplines or focus on your own discipline. It's a meeting point for the volouteers and other performers to share ideas or just catch up and socialise. A point of contact if anyone needed to talk about some issues they were facing. It's a fun social way to bring everyone together at least once a week, I think this is important for the volouteers to feel like they are part of a caring community.’

How can someone take this concept and implement it on their own?

‘The space is the most important thing, and then materials and a group of people who are motivated to do circus. If you have access to trainers ask them for advice and see if they would like to assist a session. Also a regular time every week is important so people know when it's happening.’
