Aug 2024 Week 4

Ongoing Series - Thai

Monster Next Door (Thai Thurs Gaga ) eps 5-6 of 12 - Extreme introvert dealing with a very hot, very drunk, very affectionate extrovert was an excellent experience all around. “I was drunk and talking out of my ass, but I wasn’t lying” maybe one of the world’s greatest confessions. How meta that he’s checking out the book of the story that he’s in. Carry on boys, very enjoyable, very Thai BL.

My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 12 fin - It’s cute. They are all very cute. I do like it when high school BL gives us a coming out sequence. I know it’s old-fashioned, but it’s a trope that goes with this particular setting really well, and I just like it when it’s done nicely. I’m not sure I needed it to totally dominate the final episode of the series. But it was fine.

I gotta say, Fourth is an absolutely outstanding actor. He really did knocked it out of the park in this last episode especially.

In conclusion:

It was fine and it was charming, but it was also a little lackluster. Thailand managed to take one of Japan's softest cutest most bonkers BLs in recent memory and make it softer and cuter and... dull. They did this by watering it down. JBLs almost always have an edge to them, even the rom-coms, by dulling the edge, MLMU lost a great deal of the sparkle and tension as well. What an office setting managed to mostly maintain in the consummate hands of TayNew felt somewhat lackluster when handed off to the next generation and a high school setting. Cherry Magic was a lovely reinterpretation, Mix Up was an amateur's watercolor rendition of a colorful oil painting. Am I being harsh? G4 tried their best, and Fourth turned in some outrageously good acting in the latter half. But the show? It was fine. If you like water colors and you haven't seen (and loved) Kieta Hatsukoi. 8/10

This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 fin - This was the first hint we got that the lead's relationship was anything more than sexual. And it was utilized for a breakup?! JJ and Wan's friendship is the best thing about this show. PWan selling JJ out to Methas was great. I was modestly delighted by the big fuck off ownership engagement ring. I admire a boy who likes to mark his territory with bling. I actually thought this was a decent final episode. If very rushed. I know, in general this ending was objectively weak, but I grinned the entire time, so I can’t really complain that much.

Final thoughts?

A story about a kid who infiltrates a cooking competition under false pretenses and then has to deal with the consequences when he falls in love with the head chef. The side couple is a poor little rich boy meets physical therapist (morality chain). The core friendships are excellent and the chemistry cannot be faulted across the (charcuterie) board. What this show lacks in substance it makes up for in health code violations. It was all chili all the time. Considering that the plot centered on betrayal but the romantic relationship never sweetened enough to balance that bitterness; one could be forgiven for throwing this one in the compost. But I got over all its weaknesses in flavor balancing for an ultimately satisfying meal, with a great dessert course. I've always loved spicy food. Plus the blooper reels were fantastic. 8/10

Addicted Heroin (Thai Tues WeTV) ep 2 of 10 - I like the side couple a lot. It’s nice to see that dynamic developed (as it wasn't in the CBL version). Of course, Thailand leans into a secondary couple, but I also like the super popular jock + geeky boy who couldn’t care less. You know what? I’m actually really enjoying this. And yes, I AM biased because it's August. (Wait, that could be taken several different ways this month. But you know what I mean.) Anygay, this is a lot softer than the original, and so Hero is much more of a pining character and less harsh. But I'm still enjoying it. I like the stepbrothers trope (we don’t get it very much from Thailand), and I enjoy the beats and pulses of this particular story. We will see if it derails into inconsequence and lack of conflict the way My Love Mixup did.

Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 11 of 12 - I’m enjoying this show but it should’ve been just 10 eps. It’s feeling bloated at this juncture. That said, I loved our little GL kiss. Very pretty. I also really like the bit with Sam and Yo flirting with each other. Sam trying to get Yo to call him P'Sam was fucking brilliant. And then slipping in all of those nongs. Delightful. Linguistic negotiation, it's what's for dinner... along with Sam's d**k apparently. I frankly did not think they would take this couple that far. So, thank you very much everybody involved.

Battle of the Writers (Sun YT) ep 4 of 12 - I do enjoy watching Yim freak out and fall in love all over again. The reality is still better for me than the fantasy parts, but it’s all fun enough. The magic mushrooms bit was odd. In fact, there is definitely a core tenor of ODD going on with the show. Which I’m accustomed to from Japan but I’m not really sure about from Thailand. Thus I remain engaged but suspicious of this BL.

I Saw You in My Dream (Weds Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - Yu wants to take his baby on a trip, gets thwarted by his younger brother. Ouch. I really do think it’s time for Ai to tell Yu what’s going on with his dreams! Drunken boyfriend bolster pillow is a fav trope of mine. As usual, I’m catching second lead syndrome. What? I liked the rich boy badminton player. And then he picked up a guitar. Oh well.

The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 8 of 12 - No one cares about the hets. He was jelly? Cute. Also kinda an arse, by hey this is BL.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

The On1y One (Taiwan Thurs Gaga) eps 1-2 of 12 - announced in 2023, high school, stepbrothers, and is reputed to be high heat. Based on a novel Mou Mou + the Your Name Engraved Herein team.

ARE YOU READY? I'M GOING TO NOT SO QUIETLY LOSE MY DAMN MIND

This is old-school BL and it’s bloody fantastic. Tsundere seme to beat all tsundere (smartest + tallest + bestest at everything but people) meets socially-ept cutie smart-ass protag.

They living together by end of ep 1 and start kissing by end of ep 2.

There is an Unknown quality to this, and that I love. Also, and ironic to say this while Addicted Heroin Th is airing, but this REALLY reminds me of Addicted. It’s so fucking good. I am all in on this show. Shut up while this eats my life.

Cosmetic Playlover (Japan Tues Gaga) eps 5-6 of 8 - Of course! The POV shift to the seme character at ep 5! How could I forget? Japan loves this beat! AND.... The running of the gays. And a use of a first name! So darling. Also some crazy great communication and conversation that is NOT a hallmark of Japan. Sahashi is so very possessive. I loved the switch that went on in his brain and the mania in his eyes when he thought someone else was interested in Natsume. I continue to love this.

I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 10 of 12 - I’m never going to like Maya. Sorry. And the leads were separated for most of this episodes so it was largely disappointing. I did like the insight into the way T sees the world, and sees the alienation of a disability and what it's dong to his friend. It’s very empathic. He’s such an appealing character in his obtuse bull-headed way.

Seoul Blues (Korea Fri? YouTube) ep 2 of 8 - It’s intriguing, and I'm happy to have anything from Korea on my dash. But, like Blue Boys, I’m not entirely sure if I like it or not.

First Note Of Love (Taiwan Mon Gaga) eps 3-4 of 12 - This may be Taiwan but I’m still in the "no singing" camp. I’m getting a slightly better chemistry feel off the leads in this episode. I’m not sure if they’re keeping it stiff because the younger character is under age or if it’s just that the actors aren’t there yet? (In other words is this a directing choice or a performance issue?)

Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 8 of 10 - I've finally come down firmly on the fact that it’s the uneven power distribution (in terms of interest and enthusiasm for the relationship) that I dislike about this show. Generally, I like a power dynamic differential, kinky and all that. But this particular dynamic, when it’s the weaker personality that’s so much more into the stronger one? I never like it, unless it engages a serious pivot at some point. (See My Personal Weatherman or Takara & Amagi.)

It's airing but...

Sugar Dog Life (Japan Sun grey) ep 3 of 10 - I was really loving this one but I can't find ep 3 anywhere so I guess I gotta wait it out. I hope I get to see it eventually.

4 Minutes (Sat Gaga) eps 1-6 of 8 - Gaga picked this one up so we can watch it there. If I have time, I'll get caught up and put it into rotation.

Thanks for liking them so much! Your words seriously made my day.

To be honest, I'm really terrible with recommendations, but I'll do my best.

While I do like BL, there aren't that much that are "wholesome" but if you're into fujo-bait/queer-coded anime, then I can give some recommendations (No particular order).

Hybrid Child (A BL series of OVAs made from the creator of Junjou Romantic and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi that revolve around dolls called Hybrid Childs).

Stranger by the Shore (A BL movie that tackles queer identity and a shocking twist on seme and uke).

Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East (Not BL, but seriously BL-coded; created by the author of Super Lovers; it's a supernatural fantasy story with an interesting premise and a good cast--though, there are some questionable things in the story)

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi (A BL anime about shoujo manga editors. This is my absolute favorite BL anime of all time, but it does get questionable).

Sasaki and Miyano (Probably the most wholesome BL about two boys falling in love over a shared interest in BL manga)

Whisper Me A Love Song (Got into yuri/GL lately, and this is the first one I watched. It's wholesome, but the anime can be a little funky).

Given (BL, has good plot. I wouldn't call it wholesome as a whole, but the relationship between Uenoyama and Mafuyu is really wholesome).

Buddy Daddies (Not a BL, but it does revolve around two male adults accidentally raising a four year old girl together and learning what it means to be a family).

Cherry Magic (Another wholesome BL that revolves around the uke receiving the power to read minds and learning that the hottest guy in his company has a crush on him).

Tadaima, Okaeri (The first omegaverse anime and the most wholesome. If you're into ABO, there's honestly not that much aside from heat and second-gender discrimination, but the main couple is already together and they're seriously a great couple and their son is a toddler but he's his own character too).

My New Boss is Goofy (Not a BL, but does feel queer-coded. It's just a cute office comedy about the MC and his extremely airheaded boss).

Opus Colors (Not a BL, but has a predominantly male cast. It's about VR art. It's pretty wholesome as it does containing a lot of singing and such)

A boss/employee office romance Vietnamese GL just dropped. It's called Sắc Màu Công Sở (Office Color?) and it has English subtitles. Production values are low, but far from the lowest for Vietnamese GL I have watched (a story for another day). The English subtitles are hard coded which makes them a little hard to read, but they are passable and there are also Vietnamese subtitles which of course I am thrilled about.

They actually have at least one other series on their channel so I’ll check that out.

Fun fact: The Vietnamese term for GL is ‘bách hợp,’ which means ‘lily,’ making it a literal translation of the Japanese ‘yuri.’ This is in contrast to 'đam mỹ’ (BL) which is I assume is a Vietnamization of the Chinese ‘danmei.’

What Did I Watch: #32

This week, what? Been drowning in work and Eid. But I'm back.

Step By Step was a nightmare and it was fucking good. Nightmare is such an understatement. It was thorough portrayal on being a corporate slave. That's why I called it nightmare. And a blessing.

For the longest we'd been served by half-assed representation about office workers. Before Step By Step, there was A Boss and A Babe, and I swear to God I should know from the title alone, this would be a complete trash. And also Bed Friend, where definitely the focus wasn't on the office. Too bad. I know the sex scene was the talk of the town, but well lemme emphasize once more, if you want to watch porn, just watch porn, instead of pushing porn onto contemporary show. Or at least if you take out the porn, it still makes a decent story.

Yet Step By Step is different. It was scary because how similar it was to my office life. I had this unsettling feeling while watching it. I don't think it was bad per se, but definitely that was something I don't want to repeat. Yes, this is written by someone who has been in the office, worked in the office and maybe get abused in the office. And for the love of God, thank you for its depiction of office love story that it's believable. Love in the office does happen very slowly, delicate (dude it'll involve HR at some point it has to be delicate), and full of understanding.

Such a good watch.

Skam-fication of Korean BL.

The Eight Sense is why we need Evak-coded characters grace our screen. The moment Jihyun and Jaewon met is a constant reminder that to me Skam will always be the greatest queer media out there. Because it was true to themselves. And heck, I don't think anything will ever get close to it, until now. Wow.

There was no necessary side couple. Weird filler. Every scene has its purposes and actually push the narrative. The characters did develop. Great cinematography and directing. Phenomenal acting by rookies??? And I had the loudest sigh after finishing it. Thank God for your mercy.

I got shredded in pieces, then stitched bit by bit, and the wound healed in the most pleasant way. I lived by angsty stories and beautiful resolve. From time to time, I wonder when will we get a story that it's just beautifully heartbreaking and still giving a sense of hope at the end of its run. Maybe it will take so many years and a great deal of trial and error until finally we're going to come across something like this.

And finally on a whim, I decided to watch La Pluie. No idea why. Perhaps because the color palette on it seemed soft. Or the idea of having to listen to your soulmate on the rain sounded too whack but somehow I was convinced of the world building that had been going on in the back. Plus, this little pulp never wasted any moment and I appreciate that. There are plots going on in the times when BL just having only vibes without substantial context.

My only beef for now, is the sound. The background sound was too loud, sometimes buried the surrounding sound that supposed to come out. Such as when they talked on the side of the road, I barely couldn't hear any cars or as simple as other people talks. It lessen the believability of this world.

Yet, it's still a good recommendation. Up till now it doesn't make my blood boil for having some stupidity shit that no one couldn't explain. Fingers crossed it could land smoothly. Well somehow it makes me think why I couldn't accept Oxygen but I could embrace this. Big question indeed.

There will be rants coming shortly....

I promised myself to watch Our Skyy then naaah. I kept thinking about the way GMM does things. I've never seen an entertainment agency that bad of handling the misbehavior of their actors. The very obvious way that the only thing they care is just making more money from shitty fan services and merchandises. To make more money from parasocial relationship that they build over time. I don't care if in real life the actors actually close or not. We suppose to don't care in the first place. It's their privacy, in which should not be trading commodities. It's fucked up. Our Skyy is a trading commodity. Well, it has always been trading commodities. But at least don't make that obvious. Dolls, blanket, snacks, it's not fucking smooth at all. I'm bothered. It's not helping the narrative. The narrative is already over. It is a walking ads. That's for sure. You're fucked when the dolls is the one taking over the discussion rather than the story. But well, these days who cares right? People need money, not some substantial storytelling. Not every production house can act like HBO right?

Once again I have opinions on new seasonal anime no one asked for!

Thoughts on the 14 new shows I tried under the cut.

Shows I'm Excited About

My Happy Marriage

It's an arranged marriage romance with magic, though there wasn't any magic overtly present in the first episode. It has these relatively subtle references to fairy tales that I really like and the animation is really gorgeous. Looking forward to this one!

Zom 100

An office worker is so burnt out that the actual zombie apocalypse is a fresh change of pace. The energy is great and the animation is gorgeous. I love zombie media that's aware of zombie media. I also really like the OP, which is the same group that did the OP for Yamada 999 last season.

Shows I'm Optimistic About

Ayaka

This show looks like the anime adaptation is a fantasy BL visual novel but is apparently an original IP. I dunno why the MC's dead dad's will banished him to a childhood of trauma off island only to return when he's just old enough to start dating but I hope it's so he can end up smooching some of these color coded magical boys.

Dark Gathering

It's spooky! I feel sorry for any ghost fighting show that's going up against the second season of Jujustu Kaisen but this one seems way more of a creepy comedy than an action show so hopefully it finds its own niche and excels there.

The Gene of AI

As someone with memory problems this first episode made me super uncomfortable! It's doing what good science fiction should do, which is using future tech to tackle uncomfortable philosophical questions, but it remains to be seen if it addresses them thoughtfully. I will say though that the idea of someone who loves me crying uncontrollably because the fact I forgot a new recipe for scrambled eggs means I'm not really the person she knew really hurt. I have genuine fears about my memory problems ruining relationships and seeing it done so ham-handedly feels bad. Definitely gonna keep watching though because at least it's interesting.

Helck

This is a fantasy anime about a big strong muscle guy who is trying to become the King of Demons. Even the first episode couldn't pull off any visual appeal so I have low expectations but I'd like to have a fun time cheering on our Conan rip off who's going off script by trying to join the side of the demons.

Noble Farmer

This is a series of shorts by and about mangaka Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame. She is the scion of Hokkaido dairy farmers and is passionate about her roots. The first episode felt like it was paid for by a dairy farmers association but Arakawa is so charming I don't even mind.

Undead Murder Farce

This show has great vibes and a fun premise. All the yokai and oni and such are being eradicated as part of the Meiji restoration. A couple of them are trying to survive and also solve a murder of sorts. The vibes are great but the animation is kinda mid.

Shows that Cater to my Bullshit Specifically

The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior

That name is awful but the Otome game villainess reincarnation micro genre is my jam. This villainess cries a lot and I'm hoping for a good time as all the people who were her enemies in the game fall in love with her.

Sweet Reincarnation

I love cooking shows and also fantasy stories so when they get smushed together I'm almost sure to have a good time. This feels like a less clever Ascendence of a Bookworm in a lot of ways. Person is killed by their specific interest falling on them, only to reincarnate into a world where the thing they love is very expensive and out of reach at their current status. So they simply use their knowledge of our technology to reorder society in a way that allows them to feed their special interest. This time it's a pastry chef who loves sweets instead of a librarian who loves books. His new name is Pastry.

Stuff I Tried That Didn't Make the Cut

Am I Actually the Strongest?

His sister is obviously the reincarnated Demon Lord. Looks boring.

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today

It's like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid without the charm or the sex appeal, plus the camera work is weirdly unsettling.

Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon

This one was also boring. It was one of the first shows we tried this season and I've already forgotten it for the most part.

Reign of the Seven Spellblades

Magic school with a 20% death rate, and one of the freshmen this season is a Samurai. I might watch a second episode if I have time to kill but there just wasn't anything really exciting in this first episode to get me past the Harry Potter but Edgier vibes.

Color is a sign of rebellion in Battery City. There is an acceptable level allowed, of course, but it’s the bright saturated neons that make the bright-eyed juvie kids stand out like a correction made in sparkly pink gel pen on Better Living Industries’ pristine records.

Colored stickers, specifically, go way back to when Better Living was still fighting off the last rebel efforts to stop them and juvies were confined to their schools’ detention halls instead of being out and about in the streets of The Lobby. Teachers used to put tiny color-coded dot stickers next to the name of a student with disciplinary problems to communicate things like the time the student would be in detention, why they’d landed there, if they had done anything like that before etc.

With the introduction of compulsory medication the “dot system”, as it had been dubbed, fell out of grace, no longer being used in learning facilities because it was no longer needed- the pills worked. Or at least so it seemed. In the next few years the social classes shifted, becoming more organized and having more rigid standards than at the beginning, which- among other factors- gave birth to our beloved juvie halls as we know them, if not even a little more daring due to Better Living’s cluelessness in how to deal with them.

In the end, the solution turned to be quite simple: the return of the Dot System. This time, however, it’d no longer be used in a class setting, but rather a City-wide scale by the S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W officers tasked with keeping the City orderly. Name registers turned into kids’ clothes or even faces and detention halls into vans taking them to a doctor’s office, to an evaluator’s office, to get their memory erased or somewhere much worse than any of the above. Nowadays, every juvie knows about the dot system, some even priding themselves in the sticker they’ve collected, flaunting them to show off or flag other kids like them.

It’s quite easy to remember what the dots mean, there’s six colors, each having their own meaning: yellow stickers are the mark of runaway kids, purple ones are for kids who are “deviants”- who don’t love or look or act like they’re supposed to-, green is for kids who break or deface things pertaining to City property, blue is for those BL/i thinks it can cure their rebellious outbursts by adjusting the pills they take, red is for rebel aid (which goes both ways and is a wider category than you ever think it is) and black for the kids who fight back against the ‘crows.

Despite BL/i’s strict policies about color, the Dot System still lives on as bright and incriminating as the day it first was introduced

GMMTV 2024 Part 1 - Hot Tops

I did this last year, so I guess I'll do it this year too even though I'm salty like the Great Lakes in Utah about not getting JoongDunk, release dates for the remaining 2023 shows, nor Midnight Museum 2. Even though I have questions like if High School Fremeny is gonna be queer and why GMMTV is determined to make Earth seem old (Ossan's Love, really?!), there was a lot that I liked about this lineup like . . .

#1 - ON SALE Peaceful Property

I don't know if this show is a BL or not or what its name is, but I don't care. I'm gonna watch the hell out of it regardless. After enjoying New in The Warp Effect act wild, then Tay in Midnight Museum (thug tears!) be unhinged, I'm excited to see them play to those strengths in the Thai edition of one of my favorite shows, Los Espookys, because we have the rich kid who needs the help of the poor ghost hunters. It looks like a funny (and heartwarming) take on los espookys, so I'll be scared, but it has color coding which makes it a HOT TOP for me. - For the Heart

Great was queer in Manner of Death. It was canon to me, so I followed him to Catch Me Baby where he clearly wasn't queer, but NetJames as the support were, so it was a win. In 2017, when a National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower wanted to extract classified government documents from her work computer, she sought refuge in the printed page. Maybe she thought physical paper would be safer from digital surveillance than an email. So she printed the documents at her office and then mailed them to _The Intercept_ , which broke the news with the headline, [_“Top-Secret NSA Report Details Russian Hacking Effort Days Before 2016 Election”_][2] on June 5th, 2017 at 3:44 p.m. eastern time. A few hours later, the US Department of Justice officially announced their arrest of Reality Winner, a former US Air Force officer and NSA contractor.

What happened? _The Intercept_ contacted the NSA on May 30th asking them to verify the documents. But by sending the scanned images that included each page’s wrinkles and folds, as opposed to retyping the information, the journalists shared more than they intended to: they sent the NSA the pale yellow tracking dots that are embedded in every piece of paper that is printed by a color laser printer. The dots form rectangular grids of rows and columns, with each dot’s position corresponding to the value of a date, time, or printer model. Together, the rows and columns constitute a machine-readable bitmap known as a machine identification code (MIC). MIC grids repeat across the page so that even if only a shred of a page is recovered, the MIC on that shred can still be decoded and traced. While [_neither_][3] the Justice Department’s nor the FBI’s statements about Winner’s arrest mentioned MICs, security experts strongly suggested that they played a role in helping the agencies identify her and, at the very least, corroborated other evidence linking Winner to the leak.

Winner’s case spurred a renewed interest in laser printer tracking dots and other techniques for embedding hidden messages in plain sight, also known as steganography. The development and deployment of these techniques comes out of a long-running secret relationship between governments and printer manufacturers in multiple countries. It sounds impossibly paranoid: every piece of paper that's printed by a color laser printer anywhere in the world is marked with invisible grids that make it possible for governments to trace when that exact page was printed and by what printer model. But in 2004, a Dutch journalist revealed the existence of the dots. In doing so, he sparked an ongoing arms race between privacy activists on the one hand and printer companies and intelligence agencies on the other.

### Printing Money

For as long as commercial printers and copiers have existed, their manufacturers have been enlisted by US intelligence agencies to help track down whistleblowers. In 1971, the grassroots direct action group, Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI, [_raided_][4] a small FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania and sent copies of the documents they found there—which first exposed the existence of COINTELPRO, the FBI’s notorious program for sabotaging leftist organizing in the US—to news outlets across the country.

At the FBI’s request, Xerox helped the FBI determine [_that the Xerox 660 was the specific make and model of the copier used to disseminate the leak_][5]. Xerox also provided the FBI with a list of customers who leased the 660, but ultimately “decided at the very highest level” to not cooperate further with the bureau, according to Xerox PR manager Gerald A. Mulligan. Xerox’s noncooperation stonewalled the FBI’s investigation. Even with over 200 agents on the case, the FBI never prosecuted anyone for the raid. Xerox’s stand against intelligence agencies would be the last of its kind.

As personal computers, printers, and copiers became more readily available, intelligence agencies sought deeper inroads with printer technology companies in order to combat what they saw as a growing threat of currency counterfeiting. Japan was the first government to require traceable codes embedded in laser printouts and Fuji-Xerox, the joint Japanese-American printing venture, developed the first iteration of tracking technology—the yellow dots—in the mid-1980s. Other countries, including the US, quickly followed suit. Although there was no law in the US mandating that printer manufacturers incorporate MICs into their machines, industry insiders reported that the US government and intelligence agencies made clear to printer manufacturers that the lack of traceable markings could make it difficult to sell their products in the country. Soon, every major manufacturer implemented their own tracking codes. Not a single one revealed this “feature” to its customers.

By the 1990s, the desktop publishing revolution was well underway and central banks around the world took notice. In January 1993, central bankers and banknote printers from the G-10 countries [_convened a steering committee_][6] called the Special Study Group 2 (SSG-2) to assess the threat of laser printers to currency integrity. A 1995 SSG-2 memo describes a system for tracing counterfeit banknotes back to a specific copier. The SSG-2’s next steps were to research “whether the technologies developed for copiers could also be used for scanner and computer systems”—with the goal being complete traceability for any given sheet of paper from any commercially available copier, scanner, or printer. A [_1998 SSG-2 report_][7] remarks on the success of the tracing system and notes that “manufacturers will continue to provide assistance in identifying specific copiers at no additional cost.”

Still, the details remained secret until 2004, when the Dutch journalist [_Wilbert de Vries_][8] [_broke the story_][9] of the tracking dots. In a brief article originally for the online IT publication Webwereld, de Vries cites anonymous sources with the Dutch Railway Police who confirm that they are using tracking dots to identify members of a counterfeit ticket printing gang. Privacy activists were appalled by the disclosure since the same technology that makes counterfeiting harder also subjects every single person who prints a piece of paper with a color printer—the vast majority of whom are not printing fake money or railway tickets—to non-consensual tracking. In the aftermath of de Vries’s discovery, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) condemned the practice of using tracking dots and [_began collecting data on which manufacturers implemented them_][10], including submitting FOIA requests to the US government regarding its involvement. Much of what we know about the history of printer steganography is due to their work.

EFF researchers were quickly overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the operation. They concluded that all major printer companies were implementing MICs in laser printers in some fashion. With the help of volunteers, they were able to decipher portions of the yellow dot tracking codes in use by a popular laser printer, the Xerox DocuColor. Each _row_ of the grid was given a numerical value of a power of two—so the value of the bottom-most row would be one, the value of the next row up would be two, the next row up would be four, and so on up to sixty-four. Each _column_ of the grid represented part of the printout’s date or time or the printer’s serial number. Specifically, columns 11 through 15 designated the printer’s serial number. So if column 11 had a dot in row 32, plus a dot in row 16, the first digit of the serial would be 32 plus 16, or 48. The dot matrices produced by other printers looked completely different. [_Canon, for instance, arranges their dots in a spiral._][11] Ultimately, Xerox abandoned their original grid pattern, making the EFF researchers’ decoding tools obsolete. Newer printers presumably use a different system to encode metadata in the dots.

Following the Dutch revelations, printer manufacturers scrambled to justify their invasive and secretive technology. Xerox, for the first time, publicly admitted to using tracking codes and spun them as a positive, consumer-friendly feature to enhance the security of their printouts. As a result, they found themselves under the scrutiny of the EU Commissioner for Justice, Freedom, and Security, [_who stated in a 2008 official memo_][12] that such tracking "may give rise to the violation of fundamental human rights, namely the right to privacy and private life.”

### Disrupting the Dots

I run an independent press based in New York City. After learning of the pale yellow dots, I wanted to know if I could find them in the books, magazines, and chapbooks I had made over the years. When I scanned the pages into the computer and inverted the colors of the scans, I found that nearly all of them had the simple arrangement of dots that bound me up within a global surveillance apparatus. One of our recent publications— _Salty Wet_ , a visual essay on political resistance in Hong Kong—was covered in Xerox tracking codes. I wondered if there was any way to remove them, or if being trackable was simply the cost of printing in color.

In 2018, a group of researchers at the Technical University of Dresden made a breakthrough to that end when they released [_DEDA: the Dot Extraction, Decoding, and Anonymization toolkit_][13]. Analyzing [_over a thousand printouts from over a hundred printers_][14], they developed an algorithm to detect and decode the tracking dots of four grid patterns that were used across eighteen manufacturers. Finally, there was a way for regular people to pry the dots out of the hands of corporations and intelligence agencies, and commandeer them for ourselves. The DEDA toolkit allows anyone to anonymize documents by removing the tracking dots at the software level, actively inhibiting the process and giving non-governmental entities the ability to disrupt their printer’s surveillance mechanisms. It also enables users to hijack the MICs for their own purposes by creating user-defined secret patterns. Seemingly innocuous blank sheets of paper could now be used to convey information between any parties—not just central bankers, printer manufacturers, and intelligence agencies—so long as each party had access to the decoding key.

When I set up the toolkit on my laptop, I found that the anonymization and user-defined pattern tools worked right out of the box. It was thrilling to be able to manipulate the corporate tracking systems I had never consented to and create my own MIC. But when I attempted to _decode_ the yellow dots on a piece of paper printed commercially from a Xerox PrimeLink C9065, DEDA came up empty. I tried another piece of paper from a smaller Xerox DocuColor printer and, again, DEDA found nothing, even after I had manually confirmed with a UV light that the page was marked with tracking codes.

Perhaps the toolkit is a victim of its own success. At the time, DEDA was a revelation. But security is not a steady state. The fanfare from the cybersecurity press that accompanied the toolkit’s release may have caught the eye of printer companies and intelligence agencies, and maybe they tweaked the encoding schemes they were using. It is also possible that the printers I tested use a MIC that hasn’t yet been catalogued by DEDA. According to the EFF, engineers employed by major manufacturers have hinted at the existence of a new generation of tracking mechanisms. It's been [_posited by researchers_][15] that tiny discrepancies in the spacing between words or even the kerning of letters could be used to encode information. But little is known about these alternative tracking measures aside from [_vague warnings by industry insiders._][16]

The rationale behind building surveillance mechanisms into laser printers laid the foundation for more far-reaching forms of surveillance that we encounter in our devices today. The modern internet is full of invisible tracking mechanisms that, like MICs, are marketed as beneficial at best and harmless at worst—as long as you have nothing to hide. Compared with the sprawling digital behemoth of the web, yellow tracking dots may seem trivial. But the efforts by intelligence agencies to keep tabs on printed documents are a grave, if obscure, threat to our privacy. And the history of those efforts reminds us that what might at first sound like a conspiracy theory is actually true: that in the name of preventing crime, government and industry collude in secret to track us all.

In regards to my report filed earlier this morning, it appears to Brandmeir that his encouragement and facilitation of criminal activities does not go unnoticed or unperceived by the matured student and one at the doctoral level.

It appears Brandmeir’s email has been duplicated in which duplicate copies are being forwarded to numerous persons. He refers to a DL-Blackholes and I am unware of that person being that I merely responded all to his email. I do not know this person but it is an indication that unauthorized persons have access to student’s correspondence and files violating privacy regulation, antitrust and monopolization statutes, and the oath of the government official. Since Brandmeir is unaware of the calibre of his conduct, I believe it is best that he sees my way of thinking via statutes and those violated.

(3) Nowlin's dissertation was retrieved from ProQuest's dissertation database and not the traditional database. In that my obligation and burden towards Columbia Southern University have been met as required and instructed; (4) It is inappropriate for my doctoral professor at my university to direct me to infringe upon other elements as vital Department of Education's resources and suggest identity theft as it is the only way to access additional dissertation databases not provided my university library. I am a legitimate student at Columbia Southern. Feel free to be as specific or generic as you like! I'm just very curious about the idea 👀

First, the premise of my Gym Bros BL, tentatively called

Flex Appeal

*I'm using the actors' names, but this is about their characters, not them. Force owns a gym. He has trainers Dunk, Joong, and Pond. Book and Phuwin work together at a food marketing company, so they eat a lot of snacks throughout the day. Phuwin wants to start working out and drags Book along. Dunk and Joong are super competitive, but it's all really them flirting with each other. Pond instantly likes Phuwin, but Phuwin thinks he is nothing but a meathead until he realizes Pond is super smart and kind. Book likes Force and starts bringing him tasty treats from the office during the workout sessions since he notices Force never leaves to eat properly. We could have cameos from other people who workout or companies trying to market their food. We could have Force trying to keep his business open, and Book helping him with marketing. WE COULD HAVE GYM QUEERS!

Now for the colors:

Dunk and Joong - Red Rascal and Green Guy. Dunk has the Red Rascal look aka beautiful. His character would always be up to some tomfoolery, and Joong as the chill Green Guy would always be down to join in on the shenanigans. I call them my troublesome tykes for a reason, and I think their natural personalities would easily lead to characters who are the matchmakers of the group too. Like constantly setting up situations for the other pairs to fall in love while unknowingly falling in love themselves.

Pond and Phuwin - Pond is a Blue Boy in this imagined series. He falls quickly for Phuwin and is devoted to winning him over. He is good with his hands and very intelligent when it comes to building, like say for props for an ad that Phuwin needs help with. Phuwin on the other hand is a Yellow/Orange Oddity. He is creative and works in the visuals area of the marketing department. He likes to talk and Pond likes to listen even if Pond doesn't understand it all. He wears glasses.

Force and Book - Give them the dark versus light dynamic. Force is a Brooding Boy, in black most of the time because his life has been rough, which is easy since it'll be black tanks, black shorts, black car. Yum. Then, Book is the Happy Human in his cream and white cardigans with khaki pants or some basic boy attire. Force will teach Book to take risks, and Book will open Force's heart!

Cameos:

Mix works at the company with Book and Phuwin, but he is a higher-up who we see three times. He mentions his boyfriend goes to this gym nearby, which gives the boys the idea to try it out.

Earth is the boyfriend who shows up occasionally at the gym. He never speaks. I just need to see his back tattoos.

Fourth and Gemini can play baby interns at the company who just randomly pop in with the wrong orders of coffee and the wrong mail for people.

Neo is an asshole from another rival gym who is a meathead and Phuwin's ex (see what I did there people who have been around since Neo x Phuwin?).

Louis works in the IT department, and we see him exactly once when Phuwin has to go ask for help with his work computer, and Louis notices an old picture of Phuwin with Neo on it.

Papang is the guy constantly getting hit on at the gym. It's a running joke throughout the show, but in the second-to-last episode, his HUSBAND shows up to drop off his phone since he left it at home, and it's revealed to be Mark, who appeared earlier in the season as an up-and-coming baker who the company is trying to woo, which is why Papang works out all the time since he loves his man's baked goods. Neither wears the ring because rings should not be worn when working out or baking.

Book convinces Mark to come out with a line of healthy after-workout snacks, Force is used as the model, and his gym sees a rise in customers since his gym is the only place to get these snacks, and EVERYONE WINS!

I have spent a lot of time thinking about my gym bros bl. I need it like I need air. These men are too built to let it go to waste. Film them in a gym. Just let the camera roll and half of the footage would be just them bs-ing with each other. It's a win-win for everyone involved including the audience.
