WELCOME BACK!!! That’s right fellow humans, it’s the second episode of
Bedtime Stories With PCE
And man did I enjoy writing this one, my sweet boys, Stan with the broken ribs and struggling with being hurt for the first time since running dry, his super awesome sponsor, Kyle w the solutions, Moose being the best lil cat ever, just!!!!! And this one is really important to me, because it is SMACK DAB in the middle of Broken Bottles From Apartment 2 after our beloved vet tech Stan gets kicked by a scared horse at work, setting the ball rolling for the rest of that story. Essentially I wanted to address more of his mentality following that incident, and to have y’all meet his AA sponsor! Iconic. Here’s
•coconut yogurt•
“Jesus, dude, that looks bad.”
“I’m-“ Stan cut off with a sharp *schh* as Kyle helped him the rest of the way out of his scrub shirt. “Fuck, I’m okay.”
Breathing fucking hurt. More than that, he was seriously bummed that not only was he on bed rest for two weeks (something that his partner would no doubt enforce with an iron fist), but he was gonna be stuck to paperwork once he could finally go back to work. And it wasn’t like he could quell the boredom by slipping away to the clinic for a few hours while Kyle was at his own job, because Wendy ran the front office and would not hesitate to rat him out.
“Baby, they’re only a little cracked.”
Kyle rolled his eyes and carefully helped him ease to a more comfortable laying position on the couch, gently resting one of the big ice packs they always kept on hand over his side. “Where’s your discharge shit?”
“Front pocket,” he muttered.
Kyle grabbed the papers and scanned them quickly. “Hairline fractures… bone bruising, sweetheart, how on earth are you breathing?”
“Carefully?” His partner didn’t seem to like that response. “Ky, I’m okay. You know how much worse it could’ve been?”
“YES! Yes, I do, Stan! Don’t fucking-“ his face softened. “Don’t smile like that about broken ribs, dude.”
“I’m not smiling about that; I’m smiling about you.”
“You’re hopeless,” Kyle laughed. “The hell am I supposed to do with your hopeless romantic ass when you say sappy bullshit?”
Stan might’ve been a little foggy from the pain. Maybe. “Aww, babe, C’mere,” he struggled to open his arms, which was annoying, yeah, but he wanted to hold Kyle.
“Dude, I am SO not laying on you.”
“Just a little?”
“No.”
Kyle went to read the paperwork again, fully ignoring Stan’s efforts to get cuddled. “Babe…”
“Your prescription should be ready, dude.” Kyle knelt down to kiss him. “Gonna be good if I’m gone for a few?”
Stan pouted, knowing damn well he was being dramatic, but not caring. “I don’t want it.”
“We went over this, sweetheart. You had a problem with alcohol, not pills. Is it just because you don’t like taking stuff anyway?”
“…yeah.”
“Okay.” Kyle kissed him again. “You’re sure?”
Honestly, he wasn’t. There were a lot of feelings coming up right now. Kyle noticed, because of course he did. “Stan, I know that face.”
Against his will, tears started trailing from the corners of his eyes.
“Oh, dude, I know.” Kyle took Stan’s face in his hands. “Look, I really don’t want you to hurt, okay? I know you’re emotional right now. I’ll give you your meds when you need them, and you don’t need to think about it. I can ask the pharmacy about the info too. Hon, we’re gonna know exactly what you’re taking, and you’ll be just fine.”
“I- I always heal fast.”
“You do,” Kyle assured him. “And there’s nothing wrong with needing a little help, okay?”
“Uh huh.” Yeah, he would call his sponsor. He needed to talk this out, with someone who got it. Kyle understood for the most part; he literally had a degree in psychology and had been firsthand through an eating disorder, which was its own form of addiction, but, well, specifics. “I’m- *hic*- gonna text Mark, maybe zoom into tonight’s meeting.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Kyle rose and ran his hand through Stan’s hair. “Ten minutes, hopefully.” He glanced at the corner and laughed. “Oh, poor thing doesn’t know what to do! It’s okay, Moose, c’mere, keep your dad company.”
Their cat slowly crept up to the couch, perching on the arm like a sentinel and making a cute little “mrrmm”.
“Good boy.” Kyle spun his keys once around his finger, and put on a serious face, staring down at Stan with one eyebrow raised. “Now, don’t you move.”
“Just stay where I can see you douse the lights.”
Kyle laughed. “You’re incredibly lame. I’ll be right back.”
That laughter seriously helped so much. “Okay, dude, you know where to find me.”
Moose had started purring, asleep next to him by the time Stan worked up the motivation to get his phone and send Mark a “yo I got the fuck kicked out of me by a horse I won’t be there tonight”. The old man immediately called him.
“Hey,” Stan answered, trying not to laugh at how fast that call was, because he knew that would feel awful.
“The hell do you mean, “hey”, Superman? How’d you get kicked by a damn horse?”
“Oh, you know.” Just hearing his sponsor’s voice helped. Some of the older crowd at AA had taken to calling him “Superman” too, which was objectively funny, and also comforting to hear, especially right now, when he was feeling vulnerable. “Went to give him an antibiotic shot, he got scared and bucked around, broke my ribs.”
“Christ.” He could practically hear Mark rolling his eyes through the phone. “Leave it to you. How ya doin’ with all of that? Gonna be able to come chair tomorrow?”
Judging by how much he was hurting, definitely not, even if Kyle would let him leave the apartment. “I was thinking I’d Zoom in. Will you, uh, do you think that’d work?”
Mark chuckled. “Well, I don’t know much about the video callin’ you young folks do, but I’ll figure it out. Might need ta get Laura to help me. She’s good with technology.”
Laura was a woman even older than Mark, who was not good with technology. Oh yeah, this was gonna be fun.
“Seriously though, kid, are you okay?”
Stan sighed. “It’s- I’m nervous,” he admitted. “About the feelings this is gonna bring up. We’ve talked about my coping mechanisms before, like how I like to move, when I start feeling down, instead of drinking? But I…”
“You can’t go for a hike or work out with busted ribs,” Mark finished. “I know being injured, havin’ to stay put, that’s a trigger for you. Like the bender you told me about in high school, after you broke your arm.”
“Yeah…” Not even Kyle knew how bad he had spiraled that time. He knew it had been bad, but not to the extent that it had gotten to. Getting hurt because of something he loved, combined with the timing and completely changing his career path senior year, all of that had led to a full depressive episode, complete with binge drinking and attempting to cut his cast off with bolt cutters. “I still could’ve been scouted in the spring,” he muttered dejectedly.
“But you chose to quit football,” Mark reminded him. “You’ve said you don’t regret that. You remember why you don’t regret it?”
Reaching up to pet his cat, the little creature who had been the driving force to him actually applying his degree, Stan was reminded that he really did like how his life was turning out.
“Yeah. I’m where I’m supposed to be, right?”
“Not for me to say, Superman,” Mark said. “You’re a damn good vet, and gettin’ hurt because of your job happens.” The smile was clear in his voice. “You’re more worried about the horse, ain’t ya?”
Stan once again had to force himself not to laugh. “Dude, he was scared. I was literally coming at him with a needle.”
“And what would you do if you were in his horseshoes?”
“Mark, dude, please don’t make jokes, laughing hurts like a bitch.” He checked the time. Kyle would be back home any minute. “Same thing, though. Ky’s gonna be on my ass about painkillers. That’s… uh, kinda why I needed to talk.”
“Hmm. I gotcha. You’re worried about the addiction potential? Combined with being home alone until you go back to work?”
Hit the nail on the head. Stan nodded, then remembered that Mark couldn’t see him. “Pretty much. I’m just… I haven’t been hurt this bad, since running dry. I’m not sure what to do to distract myself, honestly.”
“Alright.” Mark could be pretty straightforward, when it came to a course of action, a lot like Kyle. “You like them video games, right? And reading your fantasy books? Bet you got one downloaded on your phone right now.”
As a matter of fact, he did. “Uh, yeah, Atherton, I think”
“I don’t know what the hell that is, but you catch my drift?”
Moose had moved down to drape over him like a scarf, warm and little and soft. Sweet little guy; he always took care of his dads. And Stan had a support system. He’d be okay. “I’m picking up what you’re putting down, dude,” he said into the phone. “Distractions that aren’t physical, but keep me engaged, right?”
“And bingo was his name-o,” Mark confirmed. “Good to think of some that you can do when you’re my age, anyway. You ain’t gonna be Superman forever, right?”
“Dude-“ Stan heard the security door open, finally. Kyle.
Mark interrupted. “I know you got that whole thing about age, kid, sorry. I know you’re strugglin’ so how’s about we just focus on today. That boyfriend of yours taking care of ya?”
“Mhm. I’m pretty sure he just got home.” Yeah, definitely, because Stan could hear the voice of Sheila Broflovski through the door, and Kyle probably didn’t even have her on speaker. “Yeah, he’s home, and on the phone with his mom.”
“Uh oh,” Mark laughed. He had heard many a tale. “She’s gonna give you an earful. I’ll let ya go, then. You can call me anytime, okay? It works if you work it.”
“It works if you work it,” Stan repeated. “Thanks, dude. I’ll probably skip tonight, but I’ll call into the meeting tomorrow, okay?”
“Gotcha. Tell Kyle and y’all’s critter I say hi.”
“Will do.”
Right as he ended the call, Kyle burst in, arms full of Walgreens bags and his phone sandwiched between his ear and shoulder, looking hilariously frazzled. “Oh my GOD, Ma, look okay, he is literally right here just- OKAY, Jesus, yes I’m putting him on-“ he gave Stan an expression that clearly was asking if he was up for this. Stan nodded and grabbed the phone so Kyle could get everything set down.
“I’m here.”
“STANLEY!!! Are you okay?! Oh my GOODNESS I can absolutely drive up- do you need anything?! Have you told Sharon?”
Kyle mouthed “don’t blame me”. Stan shifted a little. He’d been talking a lot for the past half hour and he was actually starting to have trouble catching his breath. “No ma’am, I- wait, how did you find out?”
“Your friend Bebe’s gossip list! She posted to Facebook and said “a certain vet got kicked by a horse” and I just KNEW IT WAS YOU! Kyle said he was picking up your medication?”
“Fuckin-“ Kyle took the phone back. “Ma, okay, I’ve got him. I’m going to take care of him and- Ma. I’m not putting Stan back on the phone. It hurts him to talk. Yes, I’ll tell his mom. No, he’s on bed rest. Do you seriously think I’m letting him out of my- okay, okay, sorry, no- oh my God, I’m not making chicken noodle soup, he’s been vegetarian for twenty years, Ma. Alright. We love you too. Christ, yes, I’m eating. Please don’t start right now. Alright. Yes. We got it. Okay. I’ll keep you updated. Yeah, love you. Bye.”
Kyle slumped over the kitchen island, groaning. “If you say anything about me being exactly like my mother, I’m gonna be super annoying and not run interference next time she calls.”
“Pretty sure you’re not beating the Sheila allegations, baby.”
“Ughhhhh.”
Stan reached his hand backwards, eyes closed, waiting for his partner to take it. “Talked to Mark.”
Kyle took his hand, kneeling by the couch and kissing his forehead. “Good, sweetheart. Do you think you’re okay to get some medicine in you? I know it hurts.”
He was always so thoughtful, so gentle with him, and not in a condescending way, either. No wonder Kyle was so good at his job. He could handle a grown ass man emotional over broken bones; angsty preteens were probably a cakewalk to him.
Stan bypassed the cat across his chest, lifting the ice pack from his lower torso. “How’s it looking?”
“Oh, honey.” Kyle sounded genuinely distressed, and Stan opened his eyes to see his partner actually genuinely distressed. “Stan, I can see the hoof print!”
“…damn.”
“Jesus, dude, you poor thing. ” He stood back up and grabbed the prescription bag from the counter, along with a snack sized yogurt from one of the bags. “Solution time.”
“I’m listening.” He’d take just about any idea. It hurt.
“Here’s what I’m thinking. I got a few things of that coconut yogurt you like. I checked with the pharmacist and she said we can crush up your painkillers into it if you want, if you’re not feeling the swallowing pills. I can keep up with your dosage schedule so you don’t need to think about it.” He tilted Stan’s face up to make sure they were seeing eye to eye. “But if you want to take them less often and stick to ice and over the counters, that’s okay. I’ll handle the thinking about shit, and you handle the taking it easy.”
Stan eyed the bottle. “Are they gonna make me sleepy?” The thought scared him.
“Oh, dude.” Kyle could strategize incredibly, though. “We can start with half, okay? It isn’t likely that they’ll knock you out, sweetheart. You’re not a small guy, and I asked. Dosage isn’t high. And you say the word; we work something else out. First priority is keeping you comfortable so you can heal, okay? Does that help?”
“I’m gonna be okay.”
“Yeah, you are,” Kyle assured him. “I’m right here, you know how to deal with this, and you’ll be better before you know it. Now, some meds and I’ll help you upstairs? We can take a nap? I’ll be right there, dude. Keep you from moving around too much.”
He knew damn well Kyle wouldn’t be sleeping a wink. But he nodded. “You’re for real gonna feed me my painkillers in yogurt like I’m a puppy?”
Kyle grinned. “Whatever works.” He reached over to pet Moose. “Whatcha think, young nastyman? Do I have good plans or what?”
Stan slowly sat up, an arm around his midsection and definitely not comfortable, but that was alright. Pretty soon he’d be able to breathe a little better. “What would I do without you, Ky?”

LIV im the anon that talked abt the yogurt soju drink 😭😭 i love u!! i’m happy u found a way to veganize it!!! can i ask for the recipe? calpico/yakult/soju is soooo good id love to try to see if i can make the vegan version :333
YAYYYY IM SO GLAD U SAW THE POST!! i was sipping my little drink w my friends like 'they don't know a beloved little guy from my computer recommended this.....'
and ok RECIPE!!
fulllll disclosure i have never had yakult/calpico/etc so i just looked up what yakult is and tried my best to imitate it, and i did that with a vegan coconut milk kefir/yogurt drink!! the biggest difference from what i could guess is that yakult has added sugar, so i addressed that by just mixing a bit of simple syrup in to sweeten it (which also helped make it a little thinner, but this particular kefir was very thin/drinkable anyway)
i used a 4:2:1 ratio (soju to "yakult" to soda) and i used blueberry soju, the sweetened coconut kefir, and sugar-free lemon lime soda to top it off—but from what i read you can also use soda water, and I think i'll do that next time bc it was yummy but quite sweet!! i also had some frozen blueberries we put in with the ice toooo so it was a very pretty light purple-y colour <3

Some actual tips from a disabled person:
(Caveat: these will not help everyone. I have ADHD, bipolar, and a chronic autoimmune disease.)
When you have extra spoons, meal prep and put those bad boys in your freezer. I’m talking soups and stews mostly. But also you can chop veggies (potatoes, onions, carrot etc) and use them for soups and curries and stews later to take out an extra step.
Get a salad chopper. I don’t have one yet but I want to get one. Makes chopping ingredients less of a (literal) pain.
Casseroles are your friend & they are very SNAP and food pantry friendly. Layer any protein (canned tuna, chicken, ground beef, etc) with a carb (pasta, rice, etc), dump in some frozen or canned veggies and some kind of sauce (canned soups work great) and bake at 350 until done. Can be made entirely with shelf stable inexpensive ingredients. They require basically no food prep and no planning ahead.
Curry is also your friend. Pick up a tub of curry paste from an Asian market and keep it in your fridge, keep coconut milk in your pantry along with canned beans (or dried lentils which cook very quickly) or some other kind of protein you can tolerate and aren’t allergic to. Dump in frozen veggies and some cubed potatoes, serve over rice. Very simple and very tasty and again: chop ingredients when you have spoons and freeze them for later.
Pasta is your friend. Takes about 10-20 minutes and no meal prep. Pick a sauce, dump in some kind of freezable or shelf stable protein and a handful of frozen veggies.
I keep mentioning frozen veggies. See a pattern? They are sometimes even better for you than fresh in the store and you don’t have to worry about them going bad. They can reheat in a minute in the microwave or you can easily toss them into shit. I much prefer them to trying to manage salad ingredients.
Yogurt/cottage cheese is very nutritious. If you’re not allergic, keep it in your house with some frozen fruit for an easy snack.
Cereal my beloved.
Oatmeal is cheap and can be sweet or savory.
Get a rice cooker if you can afford it. Mine was thrifted and we’ve had it for years, and it has saved my butt so many times.
Pancakes can be frozen and they reheat well. Pancakes + peanutbutter and syrup are very filling and very cheap. Use pancake mix if it’s overwhelming.
Potatoes can be baked in the microwave. Wrap in a wet paper towel and nuke for 3-5 minutes if it’s small, add a minute or two if it’s big.
If you can tolerate eggs, boil a bunch ahead of time when you have spoons and keep them in your fridge.
They key here is that I do not meal prep. I keep a list of easy meals on my phone. All of them can be made very quickly. On zero spoon days I have a few meals (cereal, instant ramen, chicken nuggets, instant oatmeal, cottage cheese etc) which can be eaten with nearly zero work or prep. Fed is best.
I stick to shelf stable ingredients as much as possible bc I never know when I will have spoons to cook.
I use higher spoon days to prep for low spoon days.
Do not focus on prepping meals. Focus more on prepping ingredients.
If you don’t know what to cook you can browse meal kit services and steal their menus (and modify them for yourself). But generally I just stick to a rota of soups/curries/stews/pasta/rice with toppings/casseroles/something fancy if I have the spoons
Sandwiches are good for you. Barring the energy to make sandwiches, just shove various sandwich ingredients into your mouth straight out of the fridge.
Toast my beloved.
Bananas and apples with peanut butter (or other tolerated nut butter) my beloved.
Easy cheap foods that require very little food prep:
How to cook a casserole out of anything
Korean beef bowl (can sub crumbled tofu if you want)
Spicy cold tofu
Microwaved baked potato
Thai spring rolls (you can use pre cooked shrimp)
Dahl
Quesadillas (you can swap the chicken for refried beans or use canned/pre cooked. Just drain the canned well though).
Boiled eggs
Another tip: please do not feel like you need to stand the whole time you are in the kitchen. You can chop at a table while sitting down. Bring a chair with you when cooking things on the stove.
Anyway that’s most of it. I know these won’t work for everyone, but this is what has helped me. Please don’t be afraid to get your groceries delivered either, or to buy premade foods. Again: fed is best.
so many tips for budgeting/being frugal are just twice as hard when you have a disability
"meal plan!" idk if i'll be feeling well enough to cook every day so it's hard to plan for what to eat
"cook in advance!" i can't cook meals for a whole week at once and plus i can't count on that because again idk if ill feel okay to cook at the same time every week
"use cloth napkins and towels!" those need to be washed and folded, i already have trouble doing my laundry
"delivery is expensive, always shop in person!" going to the grocery store can wipe me out for the day.
"base your food shopping on whats on sale that week!" one, allergies are a thing and some people don't have that luxury, two, that's a lot that you have to prep for and that takes energy.
"DIY!" takes time and energy. maybe i could do it by myself but would it be worth all the time i need to take to recover?
i mean none of these are bad ideas or trying to exclude people. most of it is cutting out conveniences. but for disabled people, something that's a convenience for someone can be a necessity to others

Unpinned - Seared Fish with Creamed Kale and Leeks
Hello everyone - it’s been a minute. And Allan has been frequently playing NPR podcasts out loud. So hey! Welcome to the end of the longest winter ever to exist! We made it! I lost my energy to cook for a while there but I’m slowly getting back into it, usually sans instructions - I also subscribed to the NY Times and so now y’all are getting a newspaper recipe. We’re full adulting now. Buckle up.
Seared Fish with Creamed Kale and Leeks! Ah crap, I’ve just realize this is two NY Times recipes in a row. I promise the next one will be a handwritten recipe straight from my grandma. She just bought me a new safety mandolin and things are about to get LIT in my kitchen as a result. Safely. Anyway.
Verdict: Is the Pintrest photo complete bullshit? Yes. But to be fair, this was a complete struggle meal for me that I did not adequately prepare for and I used freakin’ frozen cod so like what did I expect.
Is it crazy expensive/time consuming/confusing? I classify the NY Times recipes as ‘intermediate’; I found this to have what felt like more steps than necessary, and took a while. It wasn’t too expensive except that kale and leeks are on my shopping list maybe once every five years, and non-frozen fish would’ve been well worth the money.
Does it taste good? YEAH. Way better than it had any right to taste. You’ll understand why later.
Seared Fish with Creamed Kale and Leeks
INGREDIENTS
4 (5- to 6-ounce) Arctic char or other mild fish fillets, such as salmon
Kosher salt and black pepper
1 ½ pounds curly kale
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large leek (about 1/2 pound), trimmed, white and pale greens quartered lengthwise then thinly sliced
6 large fresh thyme sprigs
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup heavy cream
1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon chicken or vegetable stock concentrate, like Better Than Bouillion
Cooked white rice or pearl couscous, warmed, for serving
2 tablespoons olive oil
Prepare your fish: Pat the fish dry, then salt the skin side to help draw out moisture. Set on a plate and refrigerate, uncovered.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high. Prepare your kale: Pull the leaves off the stems and tear leaves into bite-size pieces. Wash vigorously, drain, then set aside.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium. Add the leek, thyme and garlic, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring frequently, until soft, about 7 minutes.
Stir in the cream and bring to a boil over high. Continue to cook on high until thickened, about 5 minutes. Using a fine-mesh sieve set over a liquid measuring cup or small bowl, strain the sauce, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible. (You should have about 1/2 cup sauce.) Set aside the solids and return the sauce to the saucepan. Whisk in the mustard and stock concentrate, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and set aside.
Discard the thyme sprigs and stir the cooked leek mixture into cooked rice, if desired. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Once the sauce is done, blanch the kale in the boiling water until just wilted, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a colander to drain and rinse under cold water. Once cool enough to handle, squeeze out the excess liquid. Add to the strained cream, then season with salt and pepper. Cover, and warm over low, stirring occasionally.
Cook the fish: Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high. Pat the fish dry a second time, then season the skin with pepper, and the flesh with salt and pepper. Add to the hot oil, skin-side down, and cook until the skin is crispy and golden, about 3 to 4 minutes. Carefully flip the fish and cook until the outside starts to turn golden, but the thickest part of the fish is still slightly translucent, about 3 minutes.
Divide the rice (if using), creamed kale and fish among plates and serve immediately.
So here’s what you need! Sort of! You’ll notice I have store brand yellow mustard instead of dijon, coconut milk instead of cream, frozen cod instead of fresh char, no fresh thyme, and I forgot to photograph my (brown not white) rice. Like I said, this one was an unprepared-for struggle.
Our beloved, trusty, 15 year old CVS rice cooker. Hasn’t failed me yet.
My sous chef rushing to help get the dishes unloaded so I can have some space in our new kitchen! It has counters mounted facing each other with just enough room for a Rew and an Allan to get precisely in each other’s way.
Do the ‘ol cold water dethaw on your bland fish. You couldn’t even remember to thaw the fish properly. You probably don’t deserve to be attempting a NY Times recipe. What were you thinking.
Pretend you have any idea how to make kale edible. The stem seems hard so shred the leafy bits off? The smug smile is a lie.
This kale will be edible right?! Definitely not curly, definitely not as much as the recipe called for.
Leeks! I actually LOVE leeks, I just never interacted with them growing up and don’t really understand which parts you’re supposed to chop/cook/eat and which are meant to be tossed. It’s easy with a carrot - cut off the green and eat the orange. But leeks are just ombre gradients of green then suddenly white? We eat it all? Are some parts better than others? How much is TOO much leek? Special appearance in the background by fancy chocolates from Salem.
Pardon my blurry photos, it is way past time for a new phone. They look like veggie clipped toenails. Delicious.
Ok now it’s time to share my real shame: my coconut milk had spoiled. I did not have any cream. I did not have any real milk. I frantically googled different cream replacements, NONE of which I had the ingredients for. So I made this absolute abomination. It is (forgive me): vanilla greek low-fat yogurt whipped into plain almond milk with a little bit of melted butter stirred in. It smelled like frosting gone bad.
OH WELL IN IT GOES. Things got vaguely...creamy. <eyebrow waggle>
Then it tells you to squeeze all the cream out of your beautiful leeks. Easier said than done. This process was messy and resulted in WAY less liquid than I had hoped - if I’d used real cream I would’ve just...added more. Instead I had leek-flavored vanilla greek yogurt almond juice. DO definitely save the leek bits for your rice!
Pour your pathetic amount of leek yogurt juice back into the pan and desecrate it with flippin’ yellow mustard and boullion. Push down the despair. Make sure to do this while hangry at like 9pm.
“Blanche” your kale, aka give it a day at the sauna. Boiling water for just two minutes then squeeze the ever loving heck out of it. Everything you’re cooking for this recipe ends up with tiny portions WHY.
YUM! Go mix your leek leftovers into your rice. Next time maybe just make leek leftovers and rice and skip everything else? At least this time you started the rice first, good job!
Mix the mustard yogurt juice with your wet leaves. How did all those ingredients shrink so damn much? You are so hungry.
Cook your fish. Remember at the very end you were supposed to, y’know, SEASON it. Absolute amatur hour over here.
Your warm wet leaf goo! It actually smells very good. This is my smallest saucepan, if that gives you any sense of what a tiny portion this made. Thank goodness for leeky rice.
Aaaaaaaaand plated! I told you it didn’t look anything like the Pintrest photo. It was promptly inhaled and while I know hunger is the best seasoning, Allan also agreed it was tasty despite him not liking any of the individual ingredients!
Final final verdict: I don’t have a ton of fish/seafood recipes in my repertoire, so I’m keeping this one around for now but would tackle it again with more kale and double the sauce ingredients, as well as, y’know CREAM and FRESH FISH. But for what a Frankenstein’s monster I made of it, it was pretty good!

Training Log: November 18 to 24
Training Logs are back folks! It has been a slow and somewhat painful return to real life and winter running--especially when our winter is being so weird. No consistent snow, wild temperatures, it’s all making the trails very gross. I’m working my way back up in mileage, though, and the end of December will definitely be filled with LOTS of trail running.
Wow good god it’s already almost December.
Anyways.
Meal Prep for the Week:
Breakfast - overnight oats with plain greek yogurt, coconut milk, frozen raspberries, and peanut butter + coffee with wafers
Lunch - whole wheat sandwiches with turkey breast, cheddar, spinach, and horseradish mayonnaise + mandarin orange + piece of chocolate
Dinner - leftover penne rigate with homemade pork pasta sauce
Snacks - hot chocolate flavoured Clif bars + plain greek yogurt with honey and fruit + so many milka chocolate and cookies that i brought home from my parents’
Pre-Workout/During Snacks - some variation of caffeinated dark chocolate with oreos, banana, and cinnamon raisin bagel + gels and chews
Monday, November 18 - 7.1 km x 2 for a total of 14.2 km. Trail night!
Basically just run this twice, first to scout out the trails, second to lead the group. It’s reeeeal icy and that’s no fun. We really just need a hefty layer of snow and for the weather to stay below zero consistently. But it was still a fun night and I was glad I got to take the Kahtoolas for a test run. They work great, but they’re definitely a little uncomfortable. Still, falling on my ass versus slight discomfort...
Tuesday, November 19 - Rest Day
Part of my felt really anxious to take a rest day after a vacation of barely moving, but I know that’s a really unhealthy mentality, which was all the more reason to enjoy a day off from moving.
Wednesday, November 20 - Bouldering Sesh
It was all fun and games until I ripped open a huge callous trying to finish a level 2 problem... hoping that heals up before Wall Brawl at the end of the month! I brought the boyfriend along for his first time bouldering though, so that was fun.
Thursday, November 21 - 5 x Walterdale Loop (Hill Training)
The beloved, dreadful Walterdale hill... conquered it five times! That was the most hill repeats I’ve ever done for this hill, and boy did they feel great. Not my fastest on the hill by far, but I was consistent and didn’t walk any part of it, so I’m proud of how this one went!
Friday, November 22 - Strength Conditioning
I know, I skimped out on swimming. Just felt like I needed a good gym session as I hadn’t done core-focused work in a while. Plus, my knees and ankles were starting to feel a bit finicky, so it was definitely time for some focused cross-training.
Saturday, November 23 - Semi unplanned rest day
Soooo I did have climbing class, but I also had a weekend of hanging out with friends and playing recreational dodgeball. Sometimes you gotta just the thing that makes your figurative heart happy.
Sunday, November 24 - Steady 10 mi
Stuck mostly to road for this one, I missed speeding along without a care in the world. Hit the double tracks in the last half, though, and they were so much icier than expected. Ugh. Next time I’ll stuff my Kahtoolas in a pocket or something for just-in-case situations. Still a great run, averaged a 5:16/km despite taking 15 minutes to get through that one icy km and running Walterdale hill near the end!

“Gabanzo bean massacre aftermath” - Wait, this is a brownie?
Hey, hello, hi, I know I promised lemon cake but I decided to use tumblr as a testing lab for my future food blogging and I recently made my very first kind of decent brownies. (Yeah I know I am still trying to adapt to that super joyful blogger voice)
I love my mom but her idea of buying shelf stable food is the reason I currently have 5 cans of chickpeas. Not counting the one I used to make - and failed- another dearly beloved American classic. However, I remembered making kladdkaka from aqua faba in Sweden (and it was the best) so I present to you bean water brownies. (Contains a more than average amount of beans. For brownies, you know.)
Yields 12 brownies from this tin (seriosly I have never seen anyone have a perfect 20x20 cm baking tin? What sort of American centric witchcraft is that?)
225g chocolate (I used dark.)
95g of fatty substance of your choice. (Like, but not limited to: Margarine, Coconut oil or nut butter. I used peanut butter)
150 ml Aqua faba (that’s the liquid from a can of chickpeas. Like, exactly.)
1 Tsp of baking powder (this might work better with cream of tartar)
130g sugar (not sure if this works with brown sugar as well. Or golden syrup. Need to try this.)
170g of flour (however, you can swap out ¼ of that with ground nuts or baking grade protein powder (?))
40g cocoa powder
1 Tsp baking powder
a pinch of salt
1 Tsp Instant coffee
Zest from 1 orange (or as much of one orange you feel like zesting)
I terribly melted the chocolate and nut butter in a dish over water bath (use the microwave, blast and stir in between for a better result though). Cool a little bit.
Whisk the aqua faba, sugar and 1tsp of baking powder together with a whisk until it resembles the stiff peaks of whisked eggwhites. (Might take 10-12 min though. Watch a youtube video)
Fold in with the chocolate using a spatula. (Key with plant based baking is not to crazily mix everything) Fold in your dry ingredients. (You might want to sift in the cocoa powder as I got clumps.) Zest the orange. (Hint, kind of resembles x once you added zest. Might investigate with some sort of “Cream” on top)
Bake at 175C fan for about … 20 minutes. But check! With a toothpick you still want some crumbs.
Serve with whatever you like, like caramel sauce, ice cream, or Mango yogurt and blueberries. This is not weird.
Oh yeah, excuse the terrible phone picture. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#aardventures#aard cooks#baking#plant based#idk what i did here.#this has been brought to you by 3 cups of coffee#vegan baking#this is unbetad

A small warmup side project.
Slumber Rose is ready for that Garden of Rose’s pajama party sleepover!
I was originally going to just do my Rose’s PJs at first but then I saw Miki-chan’s page with some outfit designs for her Ianthe and figured I’d try the same. This is only the first three but I have a full page with a couple of looks for my Rose including her Time Skip/ V4 look for Chels’ AU. The rest will be finished and shared accordingly.
In the meantime, I hope you guys like it. I’ve also made this post to share some more info on my Rose. Provide more Rosey Tips on what she’s like and such so keep reading if you’d like to learn more about Rosaline Fox.
SLUMBER ROSE
As previously mentioned; in spite of her Faunus status, Rose’s favourite animal are sheep. She owns a large collection of stuffed sheep plushies that decorated her bed and bedroom including one giant sheep-shaped pillow pet that Rose had owned since she was a little girl.
The name of Rose's sheep pillow pet is Lambchop.
Rose doesn't sleep without Lambchop; preferring it over a regular pillow since, according to Rose, Lambchop's fluffy fleece is softer than a thousand pillows.
Despite owning it since she was a kit, Rose has taken great care of Lambchop over the years. Lambchop was the first present Rose's beloved father: Robyn Fox gave to her and she's cherished it ever since so the pillow pet has sentimental value. Lambchop is big enough for at least 8 heads to rest on its fluffy fleece; however Rose doesn't just let anyone share Lambchop. Only those she genuinely likes or trusts.
Lambchop has a secret pouch underneath the fur by its neck that's usually covered by a rose collar. In her younger years back in Mistral, Rose and Oscar would stash snacks inside Lambchop during sleepovers. They did it so that Mama Dorothy and Marion wouldn't be suspicious of their kids eating sweets after bedtime.
Eventually the two friends had to drop this charade after all the left over snacks ultimately attracted ants that got caught in the pillow pet’s fleece. Not only did the Rose and Oscar get in big trouble with their mothers for breaking the rules but till this day, Rose can still remember the intense itching left on her skin after sleeping on a pillow pet full of them. Fortunately Oscar was spared of this itchy torture but as for Rose; she never did this again. This also explain why Rose doesn't allow anyone eating or drinking near Lambchop. She definitely learnt her lesson as a kid.
Other than Lambchop, Rose also has a habit of sleeping with socks. She likes her toes to be nice and warm when resting and thus hates sleeping barefoot.
Rose's favourite childhood bedtime story and fairy tale is titled ‘The Farmer and the Moon’. It was basically an ole Mistralian folklore that told the love story of a heavenly warrior goddess with silver eyes as striking as the moon who fell in love with a mortal farmer after she fell from the sky during a tremendous battle that shook the heavens. The farmer found the Warrior near death near a river on the outskirts of his farmland and quickly rushed her back to his home. When the Warrior finally regained consciousness, the farmer, in relief, asked for her name. However the Warrior said she had no name so the farmer decided to name her ‘Moon’ after her beautiful eyes. The Farmer and the Moon is a favourite tale that Rose shares in common with Oscar.
SUMMER ROSE
During the summer, Rose wears her hair short. Since it's a normal characteristic of foxes to grow out their fur coats in preparation for the winter climate only to shed out all that fur by summer season, this is a similar trait that Rose shares with her animal counterpart as part of her Faunus quirks.
Rose is one of those girls who has no problem growing their hair out. As a matter of fact, Rose's hair generally tends to grow as long as she is tall (and fluffy too) and as a kid, her hair would practically be trailing on the ground by winter time so her mother: Marion Fox, would often style and braid her hair for that seasonal occasion.
Although Rose generally takes care of her own hair, she often goes to her mother to style her hair for special occasions. It is one of the activities the two bonded over as Rose grew up and it's a mother-daughter tradition they’ve maintained.
So generally by Spring time, Rose cuts her hair shorter as a means of coping with the incoming warmer weather and the fact that most of her ‘winter roots’ tends to 'shed' out by the summer. After Summer, she lets it grow back out so its at its full gorgeous length by winter.
Of all the seasons, Summer is Rose’s favourite despite being a Winter baby.
Rose loves warm weather and it’s one of the things she misses most about Mistral after moving to Solitas.
In the summer heat, while some folks love watermelon, Rose prefers coconuts. Good authentic coconut water straight from the husk is Rose's favourite thing to drink during the summer as well as eating the delicious coconut jelly.
Although not much of a glutton for sweets, Rose does enjoy a good snow cone.
Rose’s birthmark is on her inner left thigh.
WINTER ROSE
Rose is a Sagittarius-born and her birthday is December 21st; the day of the winter solstice.
Despite being a Winter-baby, admittedly winter is Rose’s least favourite season purely because Rose isn’t a fan of cold weather. It’s one of the things she dislikes about living in Solitas despite being a citizen for eight years. Thankfully the weather up in Atlas Kingdom isn’t as bad as it was for Rose living down in the Barracks of Mantle for the first few years. She doesn’t mind the cold if it’s good enough to go out and play in the snow. But when it drops to the point of unbearably cold, Rose can’t stand it.
There are only two things that Rose genuinely likes about the Winter season. One is her birthday which falls just four days before Christmas which meant Rose got double the presents each year. Secondly, the cute outfits Rose gets to rock for the Christmas season. Just cause she’s turning into a popsicle doesn’t mean she can’t look cute while doing it, right?
Rose’s favourite designer is Poppy Merlin---a renowned Atlesian designer specialized in producing dust-infused clothing lines inclusive of huntsmen gear catered to the huntsmen that is adaptable to changes in weather.
Rose isn’t much of a fan of sweets. When she was a kid, she loved sweets but eventually grew out of it; by the time she was a teenager especially after ‘the incident’ with Lambchop. She prefers snacking on salty snacks such as potato chips, vegetable crackers, popcorn, etc.
There is one kind of sweet that Rose will eat and that’s anything made of gelatine. Gummy bears, pudding pops, jello---Rose has a belly for jelly. When she was a kid she would eat jelly snacks a lot and it’s the one sweet she hasn’t outgrown even with the incident.
Rose’s favourite kind of cake is carrot (and she always insists that that’s her birthday cake every year).
Rose prefers frozen yogurt over ice-cream.
Rose is allergic to strawberries.
In case you’re wondering:
Poppy Merlin is a little nod back to an old Pinehead headcanon of mine where Oscar had a fairy godmother kind of character who was an Atlesian fashion designer specialized in dust-infused fabrics. Despite that being a thing one that can do with dust, we haven’t seen anyone else utilize this with dust since Cinder in V2. I know that World of Remnant mentioned that it’s an ancient practice. Nonetheless, if dust is capable of being woven into fabrics then why haven’t the huntsmen made more use of this as part of the world-building of RWBY How come there aren’t more huntsmen walking around with gear infused with dust that can change to adapt to the weather---like for example, fire dust for colder climates so that the huntsmen wouldn’t need to use their aura to survive the cold since their gear strengthened by dust aids with that. It sucks we don’t have more of this in RWBY. But, that’s why AUs with fanfics and fanart exist, am I right?
@lookyeekiti, @che1sea-xiao-long, @miki-13, @nykamito-x, @cloudburst-paint-water, @beaver-sen What do you guys think?
Also what are some of your Roses’ quirks? And what would your Roses wear to the beach or during the winter?

Obviously this isn’t only what’s available to eat in Thedas. This is just a list of things that have been mentioned in canon.
