cobra kai, but make it a Wedding Singer!AUz but like, the 1998 Adam Sandler rom-com.
i don’t have a full thought for this, but i just think Wedding Singer!AU, but it’s Johnny falling in love with Carmen while he’s supposed to be helping her prepare for her wedding with a fiancé that she’s not sure is right for her anymore.
Johnny is a wedding singer. he takes small gigs of any kind, really — mostly bc he’s got *awful* reviews. he shows up late, gets drunk, and his singing is… yeah. that being said, he’s pretty beloved by some people. old ladies think he’s a riot and if he’s on his best behavior, kids and teens think he’s the coolest guy (mostly bc he encourages them to say cuss words).
if he were reliable (or maybe stopped getting into fights with the catering), he’d be pretty successful!!
Carmen’s fiancé is proving to be a useless asshole, so Johnny is there for every cake tasting, every meeting with the wedding planner, picking up the dress, etc. everything bc Carmen asked for his support bc he seemed like a nice friend to have. all the while, Johnny’s just some deadbeat guy that isn’t sure about this “heart of gold” aspect that Carmen’s family thinks he has.
he gets along well with her son, Miguel, and her mother. Miguel’s probably the one that convinces Johnny to confess since it’s becoming more and more obvious to everyone that Carmen’s fiancé is terrible.
as a note, i want to believe that Johnny lives in his shitty apartment from the show. his relationship with Robby is rocky, but decent enough that Robby comes to stay every other weekend. he’s another factor in Johnny chasing after Carmen in the end.
bonus trope: Miguel and Robby scheming as a team to get their parents together. it benefits both of them. Carmen brings out the best in Johnny and Carmen is happy with someone that actually respects her and her family. it’s a win-win.
bonus points!!! Billy Idol still shows up and Johnny gets to have the sickest confession ever.

No actually I’m not fucking over what they did to Carmen. Literally when they introduced the baby plot I was going hey does anybody else think it’s fucking insane that they wrote this 38 y old woman just accepting a surprise pregnancy with zero second thoughts or concerns, when having a pregnancy at that age could put her and the fetus at even greater risk than average, when her son that she had at twenty, after getting trapped in an abusive marriage at eighteen, is just about to be a fully grown adult and she is SO CLOSE to having a little more independence and freedom and getting to be SOMEONE outside of just a mom; and she just?? Is not allowed to have even the slightest reservations about having this baby with a man who REGULARLY DRUNK DRIVES, HAS NO STABLE INCOME, and definitely does not have fucking INSURANCE
And then!! After all of that!!! THEY DECIDE TO ALMOST KILL HER!!! They admit, logically, that pregnancy CAN KILL PEOPLE. That she should have, clearly, had A FUCKING REASON TO WORRY. And is she allowed any fucking characterization in this? Is she allowed any SCRAP of humanity?? NO!!! ITS FOR JOHNNY’S MAN PAIN!! it’s for her SON!! They deny her the right to be anything other than a fucking meat sack for an unborn fetus and a receptacle for the emotional labor of every man in her life!! CK WRITERS PLEASE DIE SLOWLY!!!!!

have yet to stop thinking about the plane ride to Barcelona, aka the worlds most awkward plane ride in the world. Like who do we think sat together? Did Devon talk to any of them, like is she’s friends with any of the other teens? Did Eli and demetri drag other people into their drama, was demetri very obviously trying to avoid Eli, messing up the assumed plane seating arrangements? Was Robby brooding over his missing girlfriend and her dead mom the whole time? Were Daniel and Johnny still beefing or do we think they tried to save face for the kids? Is there any chance that Miguel and Sam were able to just have a nice time hanging out with each other on the flight or did they get dragged into everyone else’s drama? I’m so obsessed with the logistics of the Barcelona trip, not to mention the flight is like 11 hours long if it’s non-stop. it sounds like the trip from hell

now that I think about it writing carmen to have what canon acknowledges to be nearly lethal pregnancy complications for the sake of giving johnny and miguel something to be upset about/building the team and then having her wave off her near-death experience as soon as they arrive because she just loves karate so much and doesn't want her almost dying to get in the way of their victory was an insane decision. just cartoonishly misogynistic

This isn’t based on anything and this post isn’t new/original/revolutionary but I miss Shannon Keene. I know she was never used as anything more than a plot device and there’ll always be the hundred unanswered questions, but she was so interesting as a character in ways other than being useful for driving the Robby-Johnny relationship! Whether ‘her and Johnny both made mistakes’ (BARF) or ‘we really see not only Robby’s unstable home life - that Johnny left him in and very much contributed too as well - but we also see what’s happened to this women, certainly having agency and responsibility as a mother and a adult, yet knowing there’s something deeper and complex.
But I mean. Of course she’s not going to come back now. We won’t see or hear her for the remaining five episodes and if so it’ll be a off-handed Robby or Johnny line or maybe she’ll be cheering or waving Robby off right at the end. And they’ll certainly not care for their other women characters like Aisha or Carmen (not ignoring that these two are WOC which is for another full post) or Amanda, or even Sam and Tory at this point - so why care for Shannon? But season 4 and season 5 the role of Shannon, compared to season 1 and 2 and arguably 3 Shannon’s character? The point is she’s Robby’s mom - and Johnny’s ex fling if the writers even allow her that - so when Robby’s arc falls off then so does Shannon’s, because that’s what she’s useful for. Which is one thing in an array of problems, but we’ll never get that glimpse again. We’ll never get that glimpse of Shannon as a complex character, or a character with any story worth telling, or anything that makes Shannon Keene the character feel like a human, at all.

Controversial but, I don’t think johnny needed to have another kid to complete his responsibility arc.
Its v much framed as a second chance kid, which sucks. and between Robby, Miguel, their relationship, and the dojo, he has enough to work towards. All of the energy they have him put towards the new baby they could’ve had him put towards building a better relationship with robby, fixing his life to take care of the bio kid he already has, setting up a room for robby out of his bachelor pad, etc. they could made him needing robby and miguel to get along be bc he wanted to propose to Carmen, and they would become stepbrothers. Also, even though he’s getting better, we know the mans not the most responsible. The time the subplot takes couldve been put towards developing the fatherly bond he has with two of the main characters and their non conventional family unit instead of forcibly smoothing over all of the difficulties that realistically rise when johnny is bringing his family together with a baby.

Really is objectively both funny and sad to think about how much more focus Daniel and Johnny’s relationship got this part than anything to do w Johnny and Carmen and that woman almost DIED. While pregnant w that man’s BABY. And ofc they have her be the one telling him he has to go and win the tournament etc etc, which is funny bc in my experience men rarely need to be told to ignore their wives/girlfriends who nearly bled out from pregnancy complications like they usually just do that on their own actually.
Anyway if they were gonna do that to her I think they should fully have Johnny start fucking Daniel in Barcelona bc listen he’s just got a lot going onnnn rn he’s overwhelmedddd it’s not his fauuult. I think Daniel should go ‘oh hey btw what happened w Carmen?’ mid thrust and we should all just have to live w that. This is the bed the ck showrunners made and they should have to lie in it
