finding out cobel invented the severance chip really makes you understand the mental gymnastics of gaslighting that the kier religion does to keep people who aren't members of the eagan family in their place. helena telling harmony that shes "overestimated her contributions and underestimated her blessings" when the company as it exists today would not be possible without her.... that she should be grateful even though she was apparently working in an ether mill when she was 8.... that everything is made in Kier's name and that recognition would mean punishment.... no wonder she was obsessed if the chip worked, it was hers! and then the hubris of the board telling the inventor that re-integration isnt possible

Mrs. Cobel is a deeply strange woman, effortless ability to shift between her work self and stalking her saddest boy on the driveway, calling him all hours of the day to ask about garbage bins and recycling.
The Eagan school must've been an attempt at inducing severance through cultish devotion, shifting between states without connection to serve Kier.
The digitized severance procedure made it possible to bypass the need to raise children in a closed environment, forgo the investment of food, shelter and indoctrination.

So, Severance S2E8.
Don't get me wrong, I loved it, a Cobel centered episode was due since SHE was one of the biggest mysteries of S1, and we got a TON of worldbuilding outside of the severed floor itself, because LUMON is the main character in this story, not the innies, nor the outies: we get confirmation of the labor blackmail Lumon, like any other real big corp of our time, subjects small rural community to, we see Miss Huang's presence on the severed floor tied into a long running history of indoctrination and child labor, we see the world outside of Kier react to Lumon's practices and this was NEEDED. Plus It was marvelously shot.
... But were some scenes cut? 'cause the reveal (spoilers ahead)
that Cobel was robbed of the idea for the chip felt very.. off.
All we could guess from S1 was that she was raised from a small age into the Keir cult & that she had personal history guiding her obsession with Mark - but for a show this detailed, nothing paved the ground for her to be a former child prodigy that could invent severance as a teen. None of her career inside Lumon makes sense in light of her being a possible liability in terms of business: if you stole someone's idea that revolutionized not only your company and your cult, but potentially the world, would you let her be a random severed floor manager? More severed floors exist around the Lumon buildings throughout the country, maybe the world, so it's not a prestige-position and instead of keeping a ticking time b/omb like a robbed, scorned, prodigy on a tight leash by having her near you in the upper echelons of the company, you let her do her own thing? One might argue that being raised into being a brainwashed Kier zealot would prevent her from ever rebelling, and we see this doesn't hold, but Lumon is a company first, and this move is WAY too naive for a corporation this big that ensured time and time again that nothing compromising could get out of its walls. So the problem with this reveal is not that it wasn't possible that Cobel could invent and be robbed off the severance idea, but it wasn't a twist properly introduced or prepared. So it feels off and out of the blue and honestly, it didn't hold as much of a punch as it should have, for me.

If [the gothic villain] does not physically penetrate the heroine, he has eye contact โ€“ piercing and controlling glances. He thus may express what she dare not, her sexual desires, perhaps even sadomasochistic desires.

Severance S2 Spoilers (General)
Just a stray thought - I feel like Devon is a ticking time bomb of a character. Devon is very supportive, yes, and expresses a great deal of empathy to innies - making her seem like a pretty solid ally - but her actions speak to something otherwise.
Basically, I think the show has made a point with the finale - even when the outies seem trustworthy or kind, like oMark was built up to be this entire season, they just don't have the perspective, and the way they treat innies is still subjugating and dehumanizing. they care but its very much a "caring rich employer towards their servants" mentality. It's a rich person "caring" about a poor person.
That's why oMark doesn't know Helly's name ("Helleny") and dismisses his and iMark's relationship, and tries to tell iMark that he'll "get to experiencing the same thing when he remembers Gemma". As if his love for Helly is some sort of childish or diluted simulacrum of the "real human" experience. iMark, very validly, turns on him, seeing that he will be erased either way - either by permanent switch or reintegration.
It's a position of elitism and class stratification. And it's one she shares, in a much more insidious way.
See, Devon says she cares, but she still supports very unhealthy things - she joins Mark in mocking Ricken's weird pseudo-intellectual baby nonsense, and she still enables Mark's alcoholism, despite making light of it with him. And we see it in her treatment of innies, too. She says "Well, isn't he right?" when oMark tells her iMark says he's erased either way - but she doesn't do anything about it.
She is comfortable in the status quo. She intellectualizes these problems, but she doesn't internalize them as real - she understands the logic, but emotionally, she really doesn't feel like she needs to act. She knows it's wrong, and thinks knowing is enough, but she is still comfortable in her position alongside severance.
I think it makes sense that she could have been convinced to do some terrible things due to Cobel's influence (and, honestly, based on the conversation oMark and iMark have - with her trust of Cobel, she already may have).
