Coach Carter (2005)

There are only so many ways a film about a basketball team can go. What really matters isn’t the plot but the characters who populate it. Thankfully, Coach Carter has a strong pillar at its centre. With a compelling sports story and a couple of decent side characters to add some spice, it’s a basketball movie worth seeing.

Based on a true story, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) takes a coaching job at Richmond high school. The players are rude, disrespectful and in need of discipline so he hands them contracts they must sign and agree to in order to play. The players, which include Kenyon (Rob Brown), the coach’s son Damien (Robert Ri’chard), Timo (Rick Gonzalez), Jason (Channing Tatum), and “Worm” (Antwon Tanner), must attend all their classes and sit in the front row, wear suits and ties to all games, clean up their dialogue and maintain a 2.3 grade point average. When Carter begins enforcing his rules, he rubs many people the wrong way.

Samuel L. Jackson is at his best when he’s screaming at people or bossing them around, and that’s what he does here. He rules the basketball court with an iron fist, tossing punishment to anyone who mouths off without mercy. Coach Carter is fun to watch because of him. It’s also enjoyable because you can see the logic in his method. Ken Carter has the best intentions in mind and no one else seems to believe in these players. When they do, it’s only because of their basketball abilities. Things don’t always go well with his team but it just makes you more eager to see him double-down on his efforts. You don’t want him to change or grow. You want him to inspire the others and when he does, you feel great.

The players he’s coaching also help make the film enjoyable. They’ve got their own little dramatic stories, the best of which is Kenyon's. Until recently, he didn’t think his future would amount to much. He’s got a baby on the way with his girlfriend, Kyra (Ashanti). Now that going to college might actually be a possibility, he’s caught between the plans that were thrust upon him by circumstances, and the one he wants to craft for himself. There’s a compelling story there. The other players and their stories accentuate how important it is for them to get out of the rut they’ve allowed themselves to fall into. At least, most of them do. Carter’s son, Damien, for example has few scenes. You’d think with the controversy his father faces when he stands his ground about demanding his players keep up their grade or skip games, he’d have something to say.

At points, Coach Carter milks its drama a little much. Every teacher at Richmond high school is depicted as lazy and without any hope for their students, whatsoever. Director Thomas Carter tries so hard to make us outraged you smell the phoniness and it prevents the film from being all that it could be.

Whether the story of Ken Carter followed the events depicted in this film or not, this is a formulaic picture. You won’t mind too much, as the central performance by Sam Jackson and his character gives you something to root for, look forward to, and look up to as well. (April 18, 2019)

your first christmas w coach!sidney <3

coach!sidney is big on sleeping in for christmas morning. he'll get up and moving around 9:30-10 AM, make breakfast, then get to presents and movies. big sleeping in guy. but he'll make both of you a cup of coffee when he wakes up, but he'll still lay in bed until he just absolutely has to get up.

coach!sidney also makes waffles from scratch for christmas morning, with chocolate chips and red and green sprinkles. but only for christmas morning. every other day it's a super healthy breakfast.

coach!sidney still does his cold plunge on christmas morning though.

coach!sidney watches the claymation rudolph and santa clause is coming to town before getting to national lampoons christmas vacation, and then he'll watch the football game. he'll let you pick the movies to watch that evening.

coach!sidney is surprisingly good at wrapping presents, but he put your presents in random amazon boxes. he is really proud of his wrapping skills too.

coach!sidney is a really good gift giver. he kept a list in his phone of things you mentioned, things you liked, the type of jewelry you liked to wear, sweater material, shoe size, makeup brands, and candle scents. but he also has to get a gag gift in there too.

coach!sidney gets you a necklace with both yours and his birthstone on it- he honestly thought it was too soon for a gift like that, but he could tell by your reaction that he made the right decision.

coach!sidney by the end of the day is exhausted and he didn't even do that much. while he did miss him this holiday, he's glad that carter is with other family members because he gets to have a few quiet days just you and him alone. nobody to worry about bothering them, nobody to spread gossip, nobody to pick on them.

coach!sidney who slow dances with you to soft christmas music in the backgound, the house lit up by only the christmas tree, whispering in your ear how much he loves you.

college!au lee that looks at you before making a shot to show that its for you and then misses 😭. she gets so embarrassed and after the game you have to comfort her and tell her it was still romantic. and at timeouts when the coach is talking to her team, she forgets to listen because she's too busy trying to figure out what you're mouthing and signalling to her from the bleachers. she ends up getting scolded for not paying attention. you two go to the local park together to play on one of the courts but it just ends up being you chucking the ball and somehow sending it backwards while Lee stresses and tries to figure out why you're so bad. and when u don't have class you just watch her training sessions. you feel bad while her coach yells at the team and makes them do pushups after messing up but also feel slightly thankful as you thirst over lee. and ofc you cheer even when she does something as little as catching the ball. how could u not? you're just her biggest fan.

PLEASEEEE she'd be such a loser omg like, I could totally see the reason she misses being that she got anxious and was overthinking the shot because she knew you'd be watching her now. but, then, she would have some rizz -- like, if she has a particularly good game where she gets all her shots in, and you're giddily asking her about it afterwards, she looks around before quietly pressing you to the nearest wall, eyes bright and earnest as she murmurs, "you know they were all for you, right?" LIKE 💗💗 you'd be a completely flustered mess, face warm as she waits for your response. also, when she does make a shot that goes in, your eyes are the ones she immediately locks with, a small smile on her face.

THIS IS SO FUNNY BUT THE STUFF ABOUT HER COACH SCOLDING HER REMINDS ME OF CARTER LMFAOOOO. can we please make carter the coach in every sports!au? because when I think of lee getting scolded by her coach for trying to decipher your gestures, I think of carter in the movie when he's like, "alright, that's enough, harker!" LMFAO but, yeah, I think she's totally prone to zoning out during practice or when her coach is directing the team, distracted either by the sight of you flashing her signals, or even her own thoughts, like where she'll take you out tomorrow, or the assignment she has due this upcoming thursday.

STOP THE LOCAL PARK :((( that idea is so stinking cute omg!!!! like, you two going there together, destressing and taking a break from the busy schedule of classes and assessments. you'd beg for her to show you all the new tricks she's learned from her team, and she'd be so shy and tentative at first, but then do as you ask, part of her secretly wanting to impress you. AND LMFAOOOO she'd literally look at you so blankly when you absolutely obliterate your shot, just plainly saying, "how did you even manage to do that?" despite being just mildly offended, you seize the opportunity to ask her for lessons, holding back a shy laugh when she presses her firm chest to your back, arms reaching over yours as her long fingers intertwine with yours, carefully adjusting your grip. you nearly pant on the spot when she mutters against your ear, "there you go, that's good." and when she lowers slightly on her knees, grazing your thighs to help fix your posture, you nearly combust KDJSKDJ. it gets to the point where you gotta just toss the ball to the side, spin around and surprise her with a sudden kiss, which has her stumbling and mumbling against your lips, "but, the training" -- a sentiment not really convincing with how she wraps her arms around you, kissing you back hehe

DUDE AND THE PUSH-UP THING, YOU ATEEEE. like, I've thought about this soooo many times before, but lowkey, lee doing push ups while you're lying under her? 🤭 a sight for sore eyes, especially if she's frustrated after a practice and is working out to let off some steam hehehe
