"Clint did what?!"

Phil sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “He punched the Russian ambassador.”

Fury twists to look at Natasha who sits primly in Phil’s office chair. She doesn’t look up from where she shapes her nails with a black nail file.

“Don’t look at me, I didn’t ask him too.” Natasha says, innocently.

Fury places his hands on his hips and glares. “Dare I ask what he did to deserve that? I sent you two to warm relations, not set them back fifty years!”

Natasha merely raises an eyebrow before fanning out her fingers, inspecting the almond shape of her nails. Frustrated Fury turns his one eyed glare back onto Phil.

“Well?”

Phil rubs a hand over his mouth, a strange expression crossing over his features. “It seems the Russian Ambassador called Agent Romanoff a…”

“A prostitute.” Natasha cuts in dryly, still filling away at her nails. “To which I reminded him, quite nicely I might add that, that compensation for my services might be looked at favorably should my dear motherland feel so inclined to remedy the past. Mr. Volkov agreed.”

Fury shakes his head. “Agent Romanoff, while it’s an unfortunate turn of phrase you can’t—“

Finally she rises from her chair and crosses her arms. “I don’t have a problem with sex work, Director Fury.”

“Then why—“

Natasha rolls her shoulders, nonchalantly. “Clint thought the suggested sum was low.”

“How much was it?” Fury asks.

Natasha gives him a feral grin. “1.2.”

Fury stares up at the ceiling, wondering not for the first time how the hell he had found himself with Strike Team Delta as Shields golden goose when they act like this. “I’ll go report to the council—“

“Oh, I wouldn’t do that just yet, Director.”

Natasha pats him on the shoulder before handing off her phone. There on the screen is a bank account with 2.5 million. Fury’s mouth drops open in surprise but before he can say anything a rapid succession of honks alert them. Fury and Phil both race to the window and peer out. There in SHIELD’s parking lot, haphazardly parked, was a purple and black 2014 Bugatti.

“Mr. Volkov also offered his car to compensate for the bruised state of Agent Barton’s left hand. In return he hopes for a lighter tariffs and lifted sanctions. I told him we would discuss.” Natasha explains behind them, a touch of pride in her raspy voice. Then she claps her hands together, bringing both of their attention back to her. "Now, if that is all gentlemen I have plans for the rest of my evening!"

And with that Natasha Romanoff departs, grinning wildly. She goes so far as to wiggle her fingers at them through the window in a goodbye wave.

Director Fury can only watch in stunned silence until she skips out of sight. "Did...did Strike Team Delta just extort 2.5 million and Bugatti out of a foreign national, Phil?"

Phil blinks, shocked. "I-I think so!"

“What the hell am I supposed to tell The Council?"

“Oh, that is far above my pay grade sir, but I would suggest being proactive in giving them a promotion.” Phil comments.

There is an unexplored time period in shield where maria, bobbi, may, natasha, isabel hartley, sharon carter, clint and coulson all worked simultaneously at shield and its a crime that we havent seen anything set in it. that literally sounds like the best thing ever.

I love that the MCU has a confirmed multiverse because my versions of what happens to the characters in different worlds is limitless. If I don't like canon, that's fine; I'll just make up a different universe instead. I like canon but also like imagining something else happened? I'll just make up a different universe.

Natasha died and Steve went back in time to be with someone else? Nah, they're soulmates in almost every other universe.

Clint has a wife and kids that I do like in the main timeline? Sure, why not? But there's another world where he ends up with Natasha because I said so.

Natasha died and barely got any time with her sister after finding Yelena? Absolutely did not happen in either of the above mentioned worlds. She finds her sister, fights Alexei some more, and the two become close because I said it has to happen.

Wanda dies by having rubble fall on her after she tries to get her sons back? No, she's living happily ever after with Vision and her twin sons.

Peggy Carter ends up with Steve in the end? Well, in my universe, she ends up with Daniel Sousa.

Grant Ward betrays the team and ends up dying alone for his body to be used by some alien parasite? Well, there are 2 ways we can fix this: the world where he never betrayed them and the other world where he actually does get a redemption.

Phil Coulson permanently dies and he and Melinda May never actually get their happily ever after? Nah. He's alive and well and they're married. The Bus Kids come by every so often for dinner.

Okay, so I'm watching Agents of Shield for the first time (I'm still early in season 1) and I'm finally putting together that Nat and Clint were actually Shield Agents before becoming Avengers and now I really wanna know if they had high enough clearance to know that Coulson lived.

I would’ve replaced Fury Jr and Coulson with Steve, Tony, or Logan instead. I just think the way Marvel tries to push Fury Jr as the actual Nick Fury because of the MCU is kinda weird. Is the OG Fury even around these days?

After the fall of General Dreykov, and the remnants of the Red Room still at large, Natasha first year at SHIELD is anything but healing. Labeled a traitor and a turncoat, Natasha tries to find her footing in a strange new world.

Whumptober 2024: Day 9 - bruises

The feeling of sparring mats under her feet brings familiarity and almost a sense of ease.

The only other person here is Coulson, running on a treadmill with his headphones in, seemingly ignoring them.

Natasha stretches.

This is something she knows how to do.

She can fight.

If nothing else, she can fight.

Natasha looks at Clint.

She’s unsure how hard to hit, not wanting to get in trouble, but also wanting a proper work out. It had been so long.

The usual warnings had applied.

Step out of line and they lock her up.

The threats were getting old.

“No crotch shots,” he tells her.

“Anything else?”

He shakes his head, “I don’t think so, anything else you can think of?”

“No?”

“Okay,” he smiles, “do we need a safe word?”

Natasha frowns.

“What’s that?”

Clint’s smile falters.

“You know, a word you say to make everything stop. Like a code word. One that we both know, to say enough?”

Natasha stares.

“Okay, the safe word is yellow.”

She shrugs.

He sticks his hand out.

Natasha touches it.

At least that etiquette she knew.

They circle each other.

Clint throws a half hearted kick.

Natasha moves and rolls her eyes.

“Actually hit me,” she says in annoyance.

Clint grins.

The next punch comes at such speed, she can’t help but smile in a snarl.

Deflecting it left, she kicks underneath the punch, catching him on the ribs.

Clint steps back, drawing her in.

She falls for it.

The kick to her body is unavoidable but she takes it, and spins, kicking him back and following it with an elbow.

Clint takes it back and laughs, to her annoyance.

She punches towards his head.

Focusing on his guard, she notices that every time he kicks his left arm drops. Circling, she steps into his range and he takes the bait.

He kicks, and she moves into it, punching him in the chest.

It’s a direct hit, and he responds with an “oof.”

She’s not finished.

The follow up makes him step back twice.

The punches come in quick succession.

Clint’s quick smile falters as he takes the punches, but further aggravates Natasha.

She doesn’t stop.

The loss of control doesn’t scare her though.

Clint parries.

He hits back with two jabs in quick succession, the second hitting her in the ribs.

Natasha feels like she’s losing.

It’s unacceptable and the frustration makes her sloppy.

She cannot lose.

Clint throws a wild punch that she ducks, a headlock being the most obvious move.

She launches herself onto his back, arm wrapped around his neck.

Clint tries to peel her off, without success. She tucks in tighter.

He feels breathless.

Two quick taps should signal to let go, but when they don’t Clint panics.

He throws his head back.

He knows he catches her on her jaw, her grip loosens minimally.

Clint uses it to get a hand underneath her arm, and throws his body back, landing on top of her.

Coulson looks up at the shaking of the mat.

Still she doesn’t let go.

Clint reaches up and pulls her hair.

It seems to shock Natasha and she bites his arm.

He growls, punching her in the face.

It’s only when her head ricochets off the floor that he thinks it may have been too hard.

He cringes.

She rounds on him, moving from underneath him to on top of him.

In any other setting it would look intimate.

Clint’s arms come up to protect his face as she strikes down. He tries to catch one of her hands as wild arms reign down punches.

Then he sees Coulson over the top of them, pulling her back and away.

She flails.

A scream of frustration breaking from her lips.

“Stop.”

Coulson’s words come with such finality, it breaks through Natasha’s madness.

She seems to go slightly limp, then pushes Coulson off her, breathing heavily.

Coulson backs up, looking at Clint.

Clint nods.

Clint pushes himself up.

He chooses not to comment, his face smarting.

Turning his back on her, he grabs two drink bottles and an ice pack, and throws one to her.

He offers the ice pack, which she declines, even though he can see the start of a bruise on her cheek and swelling under her eye

“What was that?”

She stays silent.

Annoyed at his own bruises forming, he asks again.

“I know I said no crotch shots, but wasn’t expecting to be bitten.”

He examines the teeth mark in his arm.

He wonders if she’s dissociated, because her eyes still aren’t focussing.

“Natasha.”

He says her name loudly.

Her attention draws to Coulson.

Coulson looks from Clint to Natasha.

He stands on the edge of the mat.

“Go again,” he says. “But when I say stop, you stop.”

Clint frowns, putting down the ice pack and drink bottle.

“Do you want to fight me or Clint?” he asks Natasha.

She clenches her jaw, lets it go and looks to Clint.

“Fine.” He turns to Clint. “Are you ready?”

Not wanting to lose face, Clint nods.

He wonders what Coulson is playing at.

He can feel bruises starting to form, but it seems to fall away as another round starts.

Natasha moves quickly on the balls of her feet. The first strike is quick but so is Clint’s response.

Two steps and a punch has her on the floor, and a leg sweep sends him down with her.

Scrambling so she doesn’t mount him again, Clint kicks across and stands.

Natasha reaches out to grab his wrist.

She falters slightly, and then makes like she wants to put him into an arm bar.

“Stop,” Coulson says and Clint steps back.

Natasha disengages.

“Better,” Coulson admonishes.

“You have two minutes rest.”

Breathing heavily, Natasha squats.

She feels so deconditioned, and hates that her speed has decreased and body feels slow.

Clint matches her and Coulson sees it.

She should be the best, born to be the best.

The frustration at her body makes her wonder; if she was back in the Red Room if she would be dead.

The two minutes finishes before she’s fully recovered.

Clint stretches.

The next round starts.

Tactics flow through her mind. She’s good at this. If nothing else, she can fight.

Natasha advances and then with open hands she pushes him, tripping him and rolling with him.

Coulson lets the fight continue, watching carefully; when either Natasha or Clint go too far, he stops it with a commanding voice.

Round after round, they continue.

Sweat pours off both of them.

They’re tired, messy and it feels as if they’ve been going on forever.

Her muscles scream and bruises litter their bodies.

“Last round,” Coulson says.

Clint nods, his chest heaving.

Natasha wipes sweat from her face.

The fight is short.

Punches are wild and kicks are messy.

It’s not pretty.

Coulson steps in as Clint gets Natasha into a rear choke, but she won’t tap. She sees stars but doesn’t care.

The pressure lessens and they both roll off each other and onto the floor, breathing heavily.

Coulson rolls their drink bottles over, and nods.

“Same time in two days, you’ve both gotten lazy sitting through all these debriefs.”

Neither have the energy to dispute it.

MCU Timeline: The Avengers

All events of the movie take place in May 2012.

April 2012 - Steve Rogers wakes up after nearly 70 years in ice.

May 1st:

Early morning - Loki's arrival on Earth. Avengers Assemble.

Hill reports the situation to the World Security Council.

Day in the USA/Night in Russia - Natasha interrogates the Russian mafia. Coulson calls her from the Helicarrier and sends her to India to get Bruce.

Fury's meeting with the WSC.

May 2nd:

Natasha recruits Bruce in Kolkata.

Fury briefs Rogers on the situation.

Evening - Coulson informs Tony and gives him Dr. Selvig's documents on the Tesseract.

Night - Pepper goes to Washington, Coulson - to pick up Steve.

Tony spends the night studying the information provided by S.H.I.E.L.D.

May 3rd:

Pepper in DC ("working on the zoning for the next three buildings").

S.H.I.E.L.D. evacuates Jane Foster to Norway.

Rogers, Coulson, Banner and Romanoff arrive at the Helicarrier (Atlantic Ocean).

9:40 pm (local time) - Loki in Stuttgart. Rogers, Romanoff, and Tony appear shortly after his arrival. Tony arrests Loki.

Why May 3rd: the exhibition "Conquests and Sacrifice" is open from May 4 to Oct 21, as we can see on the banners. The event Loki is attending is a private opening ceremony, a vernissage, which usually takes place the day before the opening to the public.

Soon after - Thor arrives on Earth. The fight in the forest.

Night - Everyone is back on the Helicarrier.

May 4th:

Early morning - Thor and Coulson talk.

Morning - Natasha interrogates Loki. The team argues in the lab. Science Bros find out that the Tesseract is in NYC. Barton attacks the Helicarrier (over NJ). Hulk and Thor fall. Tony saves the Helicarrier. Natasha knocks Clint out. Loki escapes after killing Coulson.

Soon after (in 30-90 min) - Fury's "There was an idea" pep talk. Bruce wakes up in a warehouse in New Jersey. Clint is back to himself. Tony figures out Loki's plan. Everyone heads to Manhattan.

Afternoon - The Battle of New York. While Doctor Strange performs surgery, the Avengers and the Ancient One battle Loki and Thanos' Chitauri army. Tony saves the world. Thanos' Chitauri army is destroyed, Loki is captured by the Avengers.

Soon after the battle - STRIKE (HYDRA) takes the Scepter to deliver it to Dr. List. The Hulk is not allowed to enter the elevator and he takes the stairs. Tony and Thor somehow manage to keep the Tesseract and Loki out of HYDRA's hands. The team eats shawarma.

May 5-6:

People all over the world celebrate the victory. Some people (especially politicians) debate whether their saviors are a threat. Some continue to consider them and the aliens a hoax.

Thor, Loki and the Tesseract depart to Asgard. Avengers Disassembled. Bruce stays with Tony in NYC.

May 6th - Hill and Fury are interrogated by the World Security Council.

The First week after the Battle - Tony remodels Stark Tower into Avengers Tower with rooms for each member of the team.

5-12 days after the battle (May 9-16) - "Item 47" events.

Second half of May - Department of Damage Control is formed. After cases of civilians appropriating alien weapons and technology and committing crimes with them, the federal government restricts private contractors' access to clean up the aftermath of the Battle. Adrian Toomes starts his own alien weapons smuggling business.
