I sure do buy a lot of lip color for someone who doesn’t really like a bold lip.
#I think I am constantly in search of this very specific ‘natural’ lip that isn’t really natural#it’s the Pride and Prejudice 2005 lip which was apparently achieved with#kiera knightley’s natural lip color beet juice and a dream#but some part of me is pretty sure I’ll be able to accomplish this via a variety of products and magic#also carrie’s lip color in ESB haunts me#and I just realized I could probably look it up to see if there’s a dupe#so I did#it’s a Clinique color#I could have been wearing it this whole time probably#like I’m pretty sure the color still exists

Hi guys,
You may have noticed recently I have really been focusing on my skincare routine and trying out new products. I have become obsessed with toners and clarifying lotions because they improved my skin the most over the past couple months. So today I want to share my favourite with you all, the Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3 for Combination/Oily Skin, £24.00.
The Clinique Clarifying Lotion has been the biggest game changer in my skincare routine helping improve my texture and balance my oily skin. Clinique are amazing for releasing different versions of their skincare products to suit all skin types, typically I use 3 in all their ranges because it's for oily / combo skin types.
Let's chat in more detail about the lotion, it is designed to be a exfoliating dermatologist-developed liquid lotion that sweeps away pollution, excess oil and dulling flakes to reveal fresher skin. It's crazy because it's such a easy step in my routine and yet it makes all the difference. You can use this product twice a day if you have oily / combo skin and you simply apply the lotion with a cotton ball, sweeping gently over face and neck.
I adore this product and can really see the difference it has made to my skin. After using it I then apply my moisturiser and my skin feels amazing afterwards, almost like it's had a facial. If you're looking to update your skincare routine I would really recommend looking into toners and clarifying lotions more. As always all products mentioned in my blog post are linked above.
Lots of love

Remember this joke?
Well, I am going to do something similar only with photography. This is a photo someone took for an Amazon review of their Clinique products.
Honestly, it is not a terrible photo. They did some staging. They have an interesting background. All of the labels are legible. It is properly exposed. This would be a perfectly acceptable product photo for an Etsy page.
I've been taking these advanced photography courses in preparation for whenever I am able to create a new studio in the house. And my teacher is a photography badass. I just watched a 6 hour class on how to recreate a professional Clinique ad. And at first glance it looks deceptively simple. It's just some skin care products being splashed with a little water.
Which is why I wanted you to see an average person for reference.
This is what Karl Taylor came up with.
And I don't think I've learned so much about photography in one tutorial before.
Product photography is just loads and loads of problem solving. You have to light the chrome caps with a gradient. Which requires giant diffusion scrims.
Those big white panels are literally only there for the two chrome caps.
You need a pure white background, but you can't let light spill all over the studio, so you put up giant black light blockers.
And you have to add another light just for the orange bottle on the right.
Oh, and if you want the bottles to glow, well, you have to hide a silver reflector behind them.
But you still want the edges of the bottles to be darker so they have some contrast. So you add some black tape to the sides.
And in order for the reflective labels to have bold black lettering, you have to reflect black cards into them.
Ack! Karl's beautiful bald head is showing up in the chrome caps! He must put on the naughty blanket.
And once you get every aspect of every bottle perfectly lit, you finally get to yeet some water at it all.
I don't love product photography because I have a weird obsession to help greedy corporations make their wares look more beautiful. I love it because it is a complicated and challenging new puzzle every time. Every product is a different shape and requires a different technique to make it look its best.
I don't know if I will be able to live up to Karl's standards.
This is about the level I was at in 2017 before I quit photography.
I have so much more knowledge in my brain now. I'm really hoping I can surpass that.

One thing about The Substance I don't know if anyone has discussed yet; I think it's very interesting that in her younger persona, Elisabeth-as-Sue applies Clinique bullet lipstick, a brand typically associated with older women (while Black Honey is a cross-generational hit, the brand as a whole is associated with women 30 and above, and the product used was a red bullet lipstick in any case.)
Meanwhile, Elisabeth-as-Elisabeth, off to meet a former high school classmate for drinks, applies an unseen lipstick with a brush, then pauses and adds Dior Lip Oil on top, a product that - while from a prestige brand - got very abruptly popular among young-skewing social media like TikTok.
Two lip products with very different associations, especially with regards to age. I just think that's really fun!
EDIT: Eagle-eyed viewers who were able to get a better look at the brand name in the split-second it appeared in screen (holy shit some of you are good) have actually identified the bullet lipstick as Charlotte Tilbury! This slightly changes things, but only insofar as the fact that Charlotte Tilbury bullet lipsticks are associated with wealthy older women.
