When I was nearing the end of highschool, some of the older people around me started talking about how after you leave it's quite common for your old friends to simply drift out of your life. To be honnest I never really believed them, I thought such a thing was impossible in a world as connected as ours.

Now 4-5 years later I'm thinking about the only one of those friends I'm still in regular contact with, and who I haven't seen in person since last year. And I'm thinking about those who drifted too far before I even realised it was happening.

I think about the friend I went out for coffee with, we walked around the neighbourhood talking until my feet hurt. She told me she'd broken up with her ex, and that she had agreed to meet him the next day to iron some stuff out, I thought to message her to see how things had gone, but then things came up and kept comming up until it would have been inappropriate to ask.

I think about the friend I drove home from a week away we all took together to celebrate graduation, we talked the whole way back until my voice was hoarse. After he shut my car door I never saw him again.

I think about the one friend I'm still connected too, the last time I saw him was the night I learned that perhaps clubbing wasn't for me. It was too hot for the sleeping bag I brought with me and so we had to share his unmade bed in his tiny shoebox uni accommodation room. I was pressed up against the cool wall because I didn't want to take up too much space and make him uncomfortable. We slept for 4 hours before we woke up, we walked around the streets together, he recommended a place for breakfast that made good coffee. It was like no coffee I'd ever had before, it was earthy and strong without being bitter. I have not seen him since he gave me that recommendation.

My elders were right. No matter how connected the world gets, when you're no longer spending several hours a day with people you'll watch them drift away, because that's just what happens. You too will feel the past grasp your heart with it's talons.
